@PauloCereda :)
@egreg there are much better instruments :)

@tohecz That one has the advantage of being very portable. Ever tried playing a piano while marching with a band?

@egreg if you mean that piano, then no, but I could :)
@egreg but I agree, it's a big tougher with ^^ this one :)

@tohecz Concerto for {\Huge tuba and organ}! Good night.

@egreg well, the \TeX\@ organ! :)
good night
This doesn't happen to me quite often:

12:31 AM
good night. I'd better look into getting a larger house.

@egreg, @tohecz: youtube.com/… at 4:00. :)

9:42 AM
@PauloCereda lol :)

10:41 AM
@ChristianHupfer isn't tex.stackexchange.com/review/first-posts/56697 just clearly posted to the wrong site?

@DavidCarlisle Unsure, as i don't understand the question.
@DavidCarlisle The guys on SO won't be happy about this question either :-)

@Johannes_B it's about them magic !# URL convention URLs used in some ajax sites I'm sure so will have questions about it

@DavidCarlisle Never seen those before.

10:59 AM
@Johannes_B ohh I bet you have, just not noticed:-) found it

Q: What does the sharp and exclamation mark (#!) stand for in a url? Don't even know how to look for an answer

JohnI have seen these "domain.com/#!/" formated urls, and driven merely by curiosity I chose to ask you people... what is that used for? A kinda "exclamated-hashtag" if you know what I mean. I see it on sites such as "hypem.com" or "buzzchips.com", both of them delivering asynchronous dynamic content...

@DavidCarlisle Part-way writing one of my talks, I've of course found a bug in the code I want to talk about :-)

@JosephWright don't give a live demo, just fake the slides in powerpoint no one will know...

@DavidCarlisle Interesting topic. Been a bit lazy in that field.

@DavidCarlisle Well yes, it is part of me making slides, but I'll fix it and something else that's been worrying me: expect checkins to L3 today/tomorrow (other jobs permitting)

@DavidCarlisle Exactly. :)

11:03 AM
@JosephWright how come we can go several decades then in space of 2 days find amsmath is separately incompatible with array and colortbl...

@DavidCarlisle No idea
@DavidCarlisle Links?

David CarlisleSimplifying the example a bit... \documentclass[a4paper]{article} \usepackage{amsmath,amssymb} % without array it looks fine, with array extra space is added in the % right of each matrix env \usepackage{array} \begin{document} \begin{equation*} \begin{pmatrix} \begin{matrix} x ...

Q: Problem with align inside tabular environment when using xcolor

NoitaenolaI'm trying to build a table with multiple numbered equations inside, hence I used the align environment. On the other hand, I need to color some cells, so I included the xcolor package with the table option. However, I can't build the following MWE: \documentclass{article} \usepackage[table]{xc...

@JosephWright Frank's got a plan for the first:-)

@DavidCarlisle Ignore everything and pretend this never happened?

Q: Difference between biblatex and biber?

Sam FaithWhen I execute with biblatex, I have the cite reference :year and author as a single link. See the code below: \documentclass[smallextended]{article} % onecolumn (second format) \usepackage[round]{natbib} % omit 'round' option if you prefer square brackets \bibliographystyle{apa} \usepa...

@PauloCereda that's why we have a deep pit known as the gnats database, you can put things in there and they can disappear for years,

11:07 AM
@DavidCarlisle Yup

@DavidCarlisle ooh a black hole. :)

@PauloCereda unfortunately some new upstarts have made a portal so that things that should vanish re-emerge in some strange universe known as github

@DavidCarlisle Kids these days.

@DavidCarlisle LaTeX2e's not on there

11:10 AM
@JosephWright probably is, somewhere:-)

@DavidCarlisle Possibly
@DavidCarlisle I need to prod Will again as the mirror isn't working

3 hours later…
1:52 PM
Latest TUGBoat has just arrived here
I see Frank's opus on float placement in LaTeX is now in print

I see l3build gets a star for 'of more general interest' in the TUGBoat 'CTAN updates' listing

@JosephWright meaning you've done something interesting at last? :-)

@DavidCarlisle Perhaps
@DavidCarlisle Most of the real work was done 20 years ago :-)

@JosephWright but that was in sed (then perl) it's lua that makes it interesting...

@DavidCarlisle The concept, I meant

2:14 PM
@JosephWright Yay!

@PauloCereda :-)
@PauloCereda There is also an article by Frank/Will on l3build

@JosephWright I actually said something along the lines of "Finally!" when I read the title on the back cover :)
I personally learned a lot from it.

It's a good issue: there's an article by Ulrike Fischer on biblatex that looks good, some interesting book reviews, ...
@SeanAllred It's a useful article

@JosephWright looking forward to it ... coming to my Prague university while being in Paris :-/

@tohecz You can always get it online

2:17 PM
@JosephWright I know :)

@tohecz Nicer in print, of course

I'm glad I was able to pick up my copy before my flight to the Midwest US. It's good to have quiet time to read :)

Nicola's book review is interesting (I got a tip-off about that one)

@JosephWright Always nicer in print…
But alas, I must find breakfast before my flight home in a few hours. Toodles, everyone!

@SeanAllred Have fun

2:21 PM
@SeanAllred bye!

@SeanAllred See ya later alligator! :)

3:06 PM
So did people see the second announcement on the new mailing list?

@JosephWright Uh-oh, I forgot to subscribe. :)

@JosephWright Uh-oh, German! :)

3:26 PM
@PauloCereda Uh-oh, that's a title of one genuine book :)

@tohecz :)
Every kern is sacred.

@PauloCereda ?

@tohecz Just a bad pun. :) Don't worry about it. :)

@JosephWright That email had 3 lists cc'ed, i have subscriptions for all of them. Oh no! o.O
:-D

@Johannes_B oh no!

3:43 PM
I forgot the welcome here, can somebody do it? May be the greeter will understand the question as well.

Q: Separate page vertically at variable height

user66689How to keep the \rule (mark #2) vertically at the center of the page? If the table (mark #1) grows it should move the \rule (mark #2) down or to the next page. If the text (mark #3) grow it should move the \rule(mark #2) up before starting a new page. Is there an easy way to do it? Or do I hav...

3:57 PM
@DavidCarlisle: Yes, I was too quick... my fault

@PauloCereda lol

Seems like i posted 100 answers on tex.sx

@PauloCereda: You got a Wii ... U... me too :D

Yay chocolate biscuits!
@ChristianHupfer Yay! :)

4:01 PM
@Johannes_B: Congrats ....

@Johannes_B Congrats!
@Christian: any cool games? :)

@Johannes_B: Got "TeXnische Komödie" this morning...

@ChristianHupfer Cool

@Johannes_B Thanks, seen

@ChristianHupfer Oh, i hope its in my letter box as well.

4:02 PM
@Johannes_B Wow! :P

@ChristianHupfer I'll have to wait a few days, I guess

@PauloCereda: Monopoly and Star Wars Force Unleashed ...

A preview of my UK-TUG talk: Well, nothing new from my 2012 talk, so Joseph will kindly play the recorded video. :P
@JosephWright: ^^ :)
@ChristianHupfer ooh! Get Mario Kart!

Ctan looks for co-workers and asks for apply... I think about applying...

So I can beat you play with you online.

4:03 PM
@ChristianHupfer Do they?
@ChristianHupfer We (UK-TUG) have a long-standing interest in CTAN
@ChristianHupfer Is this in DTK?

I once offered myself to apply for TUG help, but I never heard back from them. :(

@JosephWright: Yes... on pages 64-67 etc.....Do you want to apply too? :D

@ChristianHupfer I almost certainly will
@ChristianHupfer I have reasons for a keen interest in this

@JosephWright: Ok, then I will have no chance :D

@ChristianHupfer I'll bother Robin (yet again)

4:06 PM
@JosephWright: Please finish LaTeX3 first and consider applying then :-P

@ChristianHupfer I need Frank and David to sort xor (quite seriously: I simply don't know about the output routine to do the work)

@ChristianHupfer Working on some expl3 code as we speak

@JosephWright: By the way (and perhaps this has been asked a million times before) Are there any plans to provide a full LaTeX3 replacement of the standard classes? Or has it even been done already?

@Johannes_B Nice average!

4:10 PM
@ChristianHupfer The long-term idea is of course to have a stand-alone system which does not need LaTeX2e at all, which includes needing a set of classes

@egreg Danke gleichfalls :-)

@ChristianHupfer Design-level stuff not done

@Johannes_B @egreg What's that?

@JosephWright @ChristianHupfer The CTAN thing came around in a newsgroup/mailing list a few days back (just looking for it)

@tohecz Average points per answer

4:12 PM
@tohecz Rep divided by \c@answers

@egreg but that doesn't take into account all rep capping, does it? I mean, the true score would be much higher

@tohecz no :-p, and no bounties

@tohecz No, of course.

@JosephWright: I have recently begun to use xparse and some expl3 but not for productive use so far... I think the section commands should be more flexible... and I considered a new package, but a the moment, it's too new for me and I have too few time

@ChristianHupfer Like I say, lots of open design-level questions

4:14 PM
@JosephWright: Yes, I see... My question was not a feature request ;-)

@Johannes_B Danke

@JosephWright Wasn't a mailing list :-p

@Johannes_B @egreg the true number is 584711, therefore 584711/8157=71.51

@tohecz Which query is that?

4:27 PM
@Johannes_B Not on any of the ones I'm on

@Johannes_B I've got one for that, but it's too complicated, I'll simplify it

@JosephWright I was wondering if i dreamt that, or saw it somewhere else, since all my mailing lists didn't show that. So i thought, let's check facebook.

@JosephWright: Just applied :D

@Johannes_B On the interface to the database you can query for "What would be my rep without cap?”

4:29 PM
@ChristianHupfer Cool

@Johannes_B well, there is a reason why I link it from my profile ;)

@ChristianHupfer I'll probably drop them a line via a back-door route (I have my reasons)

@egreg I hit the repcap 2 times so far, serial upvoting :-D

@JosephWright: Good luck!
@Johannes_B: I have limited my upvotes for you to 3... and only 3... 4 is wrong (@JosephWright ;-))

Guys, gotta go. I haven't been eating anything today, i think it's a good time to start.

4:35 PM
@Johannes_B: By the way... Facebook... try to find me there ;-)
@Johannes_B: Guten Hunger... Irgendetwas mit Leber???

@Johannes_B The long load to become Legendary. ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Depends, what i get at the super market. And later club.tu-freiberg.de/…

@Johannes_B: We'll go to the cinema tonight... Panem ... Mocking Jay ....;-)

@ChristianHupfer panem? facebook.com/panemmusic?fref=ts

4:40 PM
@tohecz Oh, yes!

@Johannes_B: Lol... no... The Hunger Games... Katniss Everdeen?
@Johannes_B: Hachie???

@tohecz Johannes_B 3120
@ChristianHupfer That is what they call me. :-p

@Johannes_B that doesn't look like enough to me ... there should be only 116 missing FWIW, and not 316

@Johannes_B: You will be the next candidate for an interview here and then you should explain :D

@ChristianHupfer Many many people have asked me, i don't know. It was so long ago when it started.
@tohecz Where are those 116 coming from?

4:45 PM
ah ok, it's 200 for assoc. bonus. They are 1 rep that everyone has got, and 115 rep since last data sync.
still, there's some discrepancy that I don't understand, because you've made some edits worth +2...

@tohecz Don't worry too much about it ;-) I don't

so maybe it's 100 rep from assoc bonus and 100 rep from edits

@tohecz Plausible, i made about 50 edits.

@Johannes_B: After getting rep 2000, your edits do not count any longer for rep... only tag edits still count

And now, tata and farewell.

4:52 PM
@Johannes_B: Bye!

@ChristianHupfer I know, did one tag edit ;-)

@Johannes_B: Thanks for accepting on FB

@Johannes_B anyways, you've got 240 upvotes, no downvotes and 48 accepts: data.stackexchange.com/tex/revision/241606/325539/…

@tohecz: The data site... is it MySQL?

@ChristianHupfer yep

4:58 PM
@tohecz: Cool, I just wanted to learn it somehow...

@PauloCereda After installing four different Visual Studios now Cython works :)

@percusse Visual what? :D

@tohecz A Microsoft prank joke
Never gets old every 2-3 years they release another one with aboslutely zero forward or backward compatibility

@percusse yep, I've used to use it too :)

@tohecz But in return I can view the interactive stuff in iPython now

5:03 PM
@percusse that's some cool stuff

After matlab now i can kick out mathematica for interactivity
That example is from Jake vd Plas' blog.
really really cool stuff

have you tried Sage?

I have a control toolbox and I am trying to implement the feedback gain versus system poles etc. so it's gonna be really useful for me
@tohecz Yes but no match with Ipython for my purposes

@percusse I think it's changed recently, but I dunno (I use a local install of sage, in console mode)

@tohecz Have a go with Ipython to keep the gears greased. It might be a useful ammo for your stuff too.

5:07 PM
@percusse well, I can't quite live without the math libraries

@tohecz What's missing in the Python jungle?
They have lots of stuff

@percusse but probably not isomorphisms of algebraic fields, algebraic rings, combinatorics on words, ...

@percusse Holy cow!

@tohecz No idea but I wouldn't dismiss the possibility that somebody is either coding as we speak or did already

@percusse yes, in the Sage project :) I don't say that the project is perfect (hint: it is not), but in some areas offers much more than Mathematica, for instance.

5:28 PM
What's your take on this one?

A: Different \mathcal O

Pedro MartinezLook... I don't know much about LaTeX and I don't even know if it's still usefull to you, but at least I can help people with similar problems that reach this place by looking for a solution to this problem. I had the same problem you had trying to get some equations out of Laeqed that uses TeX ...

@percusse I can't understand what's the point in the answer.

@egreg Same here. Will flag for low quality

@percusse OK

@egreg I think it is a LyX-like environment confusion thrysoee.dk/laeqed
For all Java users, is there any Java program that doesn't look like from 1985? I mean is it the default graphics or Front-end template that looks horrible and rasterized?
A Java applet is a small application which is written in Java and delivered to users in the form of bytecode. The user launches the Java applet from a web page, and the applet is then executed within a Java Virtual Machine (JVM) in a process separate from the web browser itself. A Java applet can appear in a frame of the web page, a new application window, Sun's AppletViewer, or a stand-alone tool for testing applets. Java applets were introduced in the first version of the Java language, which was released in 1995. Java applets can be written in any programming language that compiles Java bytecode...
Check any of these and you'll see what I mean. Archaic buttons, strange fonts, and many more
Is it because Virtual Machine cannot rely on system visualizations?
so compatibility issues?

@percusse the fonts are not anti-aliased if that's at least partly what you mean

5:39 PM
@tohecz Yes, but that's actually least of my concerns.

@percusse You need to set up a new LAF. :)

@PauloCereda I can only LAF at that :P

@percusse LOL lol = new LOL(); lol.lol();

@PauloCereda are you lafing out loud?

I'm not joking this is what they claim
A truly Professional Java™ Look and Feel
And this is the result

6:49 PM
@percusse: on a more serious note on Java L&F: all these GUI's are drawn using Swing which is Java native. Usually, when people want to have a 100% "native" look, they go with a library named SWT (Standard Widget Toolkit -- eclipse.org/swt), which is basically a wrapper to the underlying operating system UI capabilities. :)

@PauloCereda Is it something new? Why not many people use that then?

@percusse I really don't know why. :) I used it in a couple of projects, it's pretty straightforward.
@percusse: now things have moved to JavaFX, but I never tried that.

@PauloCereda Yet another Java innovation?

Another possibility is to wrap QT.
@percusse Dunno. :)

@PauloCereda I can still install 25 more runtime libraries before I smash my head so let me know if I'll need it :P

6:58 PM
@percusse I think I should write one. :)

@percusse: Apache Pivot has one of the cleanest, slickiest things I've ever seen for Java.

@PauloCereda You asked for it

A: What's the difference between JavaScript and Java?

Read the first review from donald ... someone
Not to mention the stupidity of the book's purpose (not the book)

7:07 PM
@percusse Sir, you are so enraged today. :) What happened? Don't tell me it was music-related. :)

I have to interface a matlab xpc target to a robot remotely and I've received ....
97 runtime errors in three hours
all crashes matlab but doesn't close it. so i have to kill the process every time and reconnect
luckily the robot is very suspicious so doesn't accept every request so no harm is done

@percusse Can I offer my help? :)

@PauloCereda Unfortunately it's a confirmed matlab bug

@percusse Can I help you swearing at those bastards?

of course I was destined to find this after 3 hours
@PauloCereda It's sat night so I'll go out to vent a bit ;)

@JosephWright: ^^ Preparing my talk. :)

@PauloCereda Cool

@JosephWright Those images aren't offensive, are they?

@PauloCereda they look like from AC.SE :) but anyways: been there just a week ago :)

@tohecz What is AC.SE?

@PauloCereda Academia ?

8:59 PM
@tohecz oh.
@tohecz: I will include you in the picture then. :)

@PauloCereda I've got an orange jacket, seeing the size of the Big Ben, I think I'm subpixel :D

@PauloCereda Did you see the 0:3? :)

@egreg good evening!

@DavidCarlisle I was almost fainting!
@DavidCarlisle No trombone tonight?

10:41 PM
@egreg this afternoon....

@DavidCarlisle Joy for the ears.

@DavidCarlisle trombone is a nice instrument :)

@tohecz it's certainly loud

@DavidCarlisle no doubt
I have to confess, I'm not sure which is worse: trombone or violin

10:59 PM
@egreg Oh I missed that. :(

@PauloCereda Pogba, Tévez, Pogba. Great game.

@egreg Yay! :)

@egreg Do they get pinged if I @ them from the room they've created?

@cfr Yes, I think so.

@egreg I think they must just have thought better of the idea, then.

@HarishKumar Oh no!
@cfr I wish. :)

@PauloCereda If it was a past date, of course, you may have less luck...

@PauloCereda you need to use \maketitle just using \date is not enough.

@PauloCereda Oh yes! ;-). All the best Buddy. Have a nice sleep and more coffee. :-)

@HarishKumar Thanks! :)

@PauloCereda you could answer the current "make beamer look like chalk" question:-)

@DavidCarlisle :)

@PauloCereda Is it beamer? Then you should show me the code. It is very good looking. Don't tell me that you did it with inkscape ;-)

@HarishKumar It is beamer. :)

11:43 PM
@PauloCereda that's so cool!
btw, gotta go to bed, I do the reading tomorrow and we have a short briefing to the Christmas fayre before the service. So I should catch some sleep

@tohecz I'll publish the template later on for you guys. :)

@PauloCereda re-writing beamerthemePrague.sty is still queued :(
good night

@tohecz night night Tom!

@PauloCereda Nice. When you publish a template don't forget to ping me!
@PauloCereda I think you guys have no plan to hit the bed. Do you? Especially @egreg and @DavidCarlisle. It must have been very late night for them already.
