12:07 AM
@cfr: sent. :)
@ChristianHupfer: which email would you like me to reach you? :)

Via skynet ;-)
@PauloCereda: Voting squad? ;-)

12:26 AM
@ChristianHupfer hm? :)

@PauloCereda: Naughty duck, naughty duck ;-)

@ChristianHupfer which email, my kind sir?
:)

@PauloCereda: The one I accidentally revealed here by posting a screen shot, some while ago

@ChristianHupfer How am I supposed to find it? :P

@PauloCereda: The mighty duck find's everything ;-) Here is another one: christian.hupfer@siebenfelsen.de

12:34 AM
@cfr Doesn't seem to bother anyone else?

@ChristianHupfer sent. :)

@PauloCereda: Oh how nice. Thunderduckbird delivered the songbook. Thank you very much

@ChristianHupfer My pleasure, now you have my contact too. :)

@PauloCereda: Next time you will get my real address (I did not want to publish it here ;-))

@ChristianHupfer No worries. :)

12:40 AM
@PauloCereda: By the way ;-) Count the number of rocks of the highest tower...
@PauloCereda: The songbook looks really marvellous... I don't understand Portuguese... I have to learn it.

@ChristianHupfer Thanks for the kind words, it was a fun project. :)

@PauloCereda: I suppose, you copy-and-pasted the texts and did not type them all in, didn't you? And who did the drawings? (I suspect @DavidCarlisle ;-))

cfr
Are questions which say 'I'm using TeX Live 2015 and it doesn't work' off topic? IMHO, they should be. Breaking is expected behaviour for pretest. (Of course, no specific way of breaking is expected. But that's expected, also.)
@Qrrbrbirlbel No. They are just trying to get rid of me.
@PauloCereda Thank you! I will look soon... (I do not want to check my email right now...)

@cfr: I think those questions are off-topic at the moment, since not many of us can reproduce the errors. I haven't downloaded the pre-release so far

12:58 AM
@ChristianHupfer I typed everything, but I started 3 years ago. :)
@cfr My pleasure. :) Hope you like it.
@ChristianHupfer: the drawings are a mix of Google image search for linear drawings, download, convert, potrace and ps2pdf. :)

@PauloCereda: Ah, you did it my way :-P

@cfr I see …

1:21 AM
Have a nice time. It's late ... or early here ;-)

1:39 AM
@PauloCereda a friend/colleague of mine texted me a link to your latest GitHub follow just a few hours ago :-) \endgithubstalkermode

4 hours later…
5:46 AM
@egreg That is lot of information. Thanks again :-)

2 hours later…
7:19 AM
Hello. I want to learn citation in latex. I did some Google searches but understood nothing. What should I do ? I know that there is a separate .bib file but then what ?

7:57 AM
@yo' normally name and link but that's a bit much for a business card I see :-)
@Johannes_B At some time in the near future, people may tend to forget about books, even electronically

@StefanKottwitz There are many manny non-book information available online.

8:15 AM
@PauloCereda well I realise that the Portuguese would have been difficult without my help.

8:35 AM
Good maen

@ChristianHupfer Hi

@Johannes_B: Good morning... please change your avatar ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Why?

@Johannes_B: It's so QR - Code like ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Github said that this is me, so it is.
Wouldn't be a valid QR code either ;-)

8:41 AM
@Johannes_B: Well, the QR code in it says: This avatar should be changed ;-)

@ChristianHupfer I could draw a little flower, scan it and use this as my avatar.

@Johannes_B: Regarding drawings, @DavidCarlisle can assist you definitely ;-)

@ChristianHupfer He is good with paint, a genius with picture mode and a tikz god. Bu real life drawings? Don't know. I think @David needs to prove something.

@DavidCarlisle: Marvellous!

8:49 AM
@ChristianHupfer you may think that is a photograph, but actually I drew it!

@DavidCarlisle: I am sure you did. It's a genuine 'David Carlisle' painting

9:01 AM
@HarishKumar: Your beamer answer was in my LQ queue, that's why I asked about a screen shot ;-)

9:16 AM
@Manuel @egreg posted something to the emdash question:-)
0
A: It doesn't hyphenate words ending with “—”

David CarlisleConcentrating on the direct use of emdash as control of --- is a bit harder. The following produces the following in pdflatex, lualatex and xelatex. I think that's the desired outcome. \documentclass{scrartcl} \usepackage[hmargin = 4cm]{geometry} \ifx\Umathchar\undefined %pdftex \usepackag...

9:35 AM
@DavidCarlisle: I am awaiting a showdown between you and the author of xpatch ;-)

@ChristianHupfer I suppose the only honourable answer would be one from @egreg that uses xpatch to patch xpatch

@DavidCarlisle: I think he wasn't online since I posted the question ;-) On purpose?

@DavidCarlisle I have taken care that xpatch macros are not (easily) patchable.

@egreg obfuscated code? terrible!

@DavidCarlisle Yes, I used expl3. ;-)

9:42 AM
@egreg obfuscation of the highest order.

@DavidCarlisle Just a step below xii.tex

@egreg actually I can read xii more easily sometimes (if i need to "see" the underlying tex rather than just read it as expl3 code)

10:07 AM
@DavidCarlisle :)
@PaulGessler ooh :)

10:27 AM

10:39 AM
@Johannes_B I thought David doesn't use TikZ.

What's wrong in this code here
\begin{tikzpicture}
\begin{axis}[width=10cm,height=10cm,xmin=-1,xmax=5, ymin=-5,ymax = 10,
xtick={-2,-1,...,5},
ytick={-5,0,...,10},
minor xtick={-2,-1.5,...,5},
minor ytick={-5,-4,...,10}]
\addplot[domain=0:2,samples=201,blue,line width=2pt,name path=A]{1*x^3-3*x^2+4*x};
\addplot[domain=0:2,samples=201,blue,line width=2pt,name path=B]{3*x^2-4*x};
\addplot[domain=-3:5,samples=201,black,line width=1pt,name path=C]{1*x^3-3*x^2+4*x};
\addplot[domain=-3:5,samples=201,black,line width=2pt,name path=D]{3*x^2-4*x};

@ChristianHupfer the first line:-)

@DavidCarlisle I just wanted to say the same :-)

There's no image, however, if I comment out the fill command, the curves are shown. I use pgfset with compat=1.12 etc.

10:47 AM
@DavidCarlisle: I've been thinking: all this site redesign might have broken Psmith! Oh no!

@ChristianHupfer Why no complete working example?
Are there any libraries needed? For example intersections?

@PauloCereda the cricket match was a draw

@DavidCarlisle After all that trouble, it ended in a draw? :)

@PauloCereda England was way ahead but they didn't get the west indies out and ran out of time (they only get 5 days..)

@Johannes_B: Perhaps intersections or something
\documentclass{article}

\usepackage{pgfplots}

\usetikzlibrary{pgfplots.external}
\usetikzlibrary{pgfplots.fillbetween}

\pgfplotsset{compat=1.12}

\begin{document}

\begin{tikzpicture}
\begin{axis}[width=10cm,height=10cm,xmin=-1,xmax=5, ymin=-5,ymax = 10,
xtick={-2,-1,...,5},
ytick={-5,0,...,10},
minor xtick={-2,-1.5,...,5},
minor ytick={-5,-4,...,10}]
\addplot[domain=0:2,samples=201,blue,line width=2pt,name path=A]{1*x^3-3*x^2+4*x};
\addplot[domain=0:2,samples=201,blue,line width=2pt,name path=B]{3*x^2-4*x};
@Johannes_B: The intersection is between 0 and 2, so I thought this should be possible without other libraries, no need to calculate. If I remove the plots with paths C and D it works again. I am missing some important stuff but i don't know which

11:03 AM
@Johannes_B I guess I must be out of date. But David himself once said that he answered TikZ questions with picture mode. Apparently that was not entirely accurate.

@FaheemMitha My initial statement, that David is a tikz god, wasn't meant as completely true. It was irony ;-)

@Johannes_B I took it as literal truth

@ChristianHupfer Comment out all the optional stuff -> axis env
@ChristianHupfer The top of the diagramm is visible at the bottom of page 2. Try this:
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{pgfplots}
\usetikzlibrary{pgfplots.fillbetween}
\pgfplotsset{compat=1.12}
\begin{document}
\begin{tikzpicture}
	\begin{axis}[
 width=10cm,height=10cm,
 xmin=-1,xmax=5,
 ymax=26,%Try 25 <-----------
% ymin=-5,ymax=10,
 xtick={-2,-1,...,5},
 ytick={-5,0,...,10},
 minor xtick={-2,-1.5,...,5},
 minor ytick={-5,-4,...,10}
	]
 \addplot[domain=-3:5,samples=20,black,line width=1pt,name path=C]{1*x^3-3*x^2+4*x};
 \addplot[domain=-3:5,samples=20,black,line width=2pt,name path=D]{3*x^2-4*x};

12:16 PM
Does anybody understand this chain of comments? tex.stackexchange.com/questions/150476/…

yo'
1:14 PM
@StefanKottwitz in the end, I don't use tez codez

1:43 PM
@daleif: I must confess I'm more of a KOMA user, but memoir is awesome! I finished a songbook project powered by memoir for our community and the result is quite nice! :) Thank you!
Did I say quite nice? I meant impressive! :)

yo'
@PauloCereda lol
On the card, only one thing I didn't like :-)

@yo' yes :-)

@yo' Oh no! :) What happened?

yo'
@PauloCereda MY NAME WAS TOO SMALL

@yo' o.O \scalebox{100}{Tom} fixed. :)

2:02 PM
@PauloCereda Wasn't me ;-) (if anyone can remember that song). I haven't added much, especially not regarding the verse stuff, that was all Peter. That being said, I use memoir for as much as I can.

yo'
@PauloCereda lol

Does anyone know what  and  is suppose to be converted into? Someone submitted them as a part of an application. From the context (two point patterns) I'm guessing it is (unicode) math, but I have no idea where to look for these. Anyone knowns? For example @DavidCarlisle or @JosephWright

@daleif You are the one to blame, don't worry. <3 :)

yo'
2:18 PM
@Paulo mail sent ;)

@daleif unallocated code points as far as I can see they are in the private use area

yo'
@DavidCarlisle so think I

@daleif probably some slot in some font but you are not supposed to access private use slots in the xml source.

@DavidCarlisle that was more or less what came up when I googled it. Just seems strange that someone would directly type this in a web form.

@yo' mail replied. :)

2:29 PM
@daleif not really, you cut some random text in some random encoding from word into a browser and the browser has to make some more or less reasonable guess of a unicode encoding to encode it....

@DavidCarlisle that seems likely. Some guy from Japan submitted 　 instead of a space in his name. I'm going to give up attempting to fix those entities.
Thanks

3:09 PM
@DavidCarlisle I see you both posted.
Funny thing, \XeTeXdashbreakstate=1 exists. C'mon, more than a year away from XeLaTeX just because of that!

3:19 PM
@Johannes_B I'm not sure if David does irony. I mean, he probably should. He's British, after all.
I see the memoir maintainer is visiting. Hi @daleif.

yo'
@FaheemMitha Irony? British? Never.

@yo' You need to watch more British comedies.

yo'
@FaheemMitha or you need to recognize a double irony? :D

@yo' Damn. You caught me there. You should become an honorary British citizen.

4:08 PM
Question - I'm trying to help someone who has a SO account log into Area 51. I thought his SO login would work. Any idea what he might need to do?

@FaheemMitha I guess that he has to subscribe to the site just like to any other site.

@FaheemMitha He probably need to sign up as a new account, then it will be merged afterwards.

@egreg How does he link his login from the other site?
@PauloCereda Oh? That seems strange.

@FaheemMitha Not at all, it's the authentication method. :) For example, I have an StackExchange login, so for every site I want to be member, I sign up and use the very same auth method. :)

@FaheemMitha Just click on “sign up”, it should be clear after that.

4:12 PM
@egreg ok

@Manuel oh yes so it does
@Manuel I think the special is a better way to allow breaking after the dash than an xspace style lookahead:-)

4:44 PM
Good maen
@PauloCereda: Thanks for the update ;-)

@ChristianHupfer My pleasure. :)

@HarishKumar Choked on my cereal
That's the most hilarious thing I've seen all day.

@SeanAllred I guess @egreg still needs to ask a question. :-)

@SeanAllred Pesky students. :)

I nominate - what is the meaning of life, the universe, and everything.

4:50 PM
@FaheemMitha > I'm closing as off-topic

@SeanAllred spoilsport

@FaheemMitha :)

@SeanAllred What's this TeX I keep hearing people nagging about?

@PauloCereda hehehe

5:56 PM
Oh boy I'm hungry.

yo'
@PauloCereda then get something to eat :)

@yo' ooh Black Forest cookies. :)

@PauloCereda When will iTeX (^G) be released? ^G is for the “ding”.

6:15 PM
@egreg :)

6:25 PM
@egreg thanks for fixing your scurrilous remarks about the color package:-)

yo'
6:53 PM
@PauloCereda How can I convert text to curves in a PDF file from LaTeX, don't you know please?

@yo' I have no idea, probably a command line with Ghostscript.

yo'
@PauloCereda ah, possibly, let's see if this works:

13
Q: How to convert text in a PDF file from fonts/text to outlines?

ronszonI have PDF graphic in which I would like to have fonts removed. All other properties of the file should remain (such as size, etc). The output file should be in PDF as well. The text itself should be converted to outlines. Can I do it at the moment of including the PDF figure in pdftex document?...

yo'
2
A: How can I convert text to paths with pdflatex?

Lev BishopTry pdftops -level3 myfile.pdf myfile.ps (note pdftops not pdf2ps) and then use ghostscript to convert back to pdf with a command something like: gswin32c -q -dBATCH -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -dCompatibilityLevel=1.5 -dNOPAUSE -dPDFSETTINGS=/prepress -dAutoRotatePages=/None -dAutoFilterColorImages=...

@yo' <3

yo'
6:58 PM
@PauloCereda GPL Ghostscript 9.14: Unrecoverable error, exit code 1 :( Ah ps2write but the fonts are still included...

#!/bin/sh
gs -sDEVICE=pswrite -dNOCACHE -sOutputFile=- -q -dbatch -dNOPAUSE -dQUIET "$1" -c quit | ps2pdf - "`echo $1 | cut -f1 -d'.'`"-nofont.pdf

yo'
@PauloCereda doesn't work :( or, what is cut?

@yo' Just to get the filename string. Hold on. :)
gs -sDEVICE=pswrite -dNOCACHE -sOutputFile=- -q -dbatch -dNOPAUSE -dQUIET tom.pdf -c quit | ps2pdf - tom-nofont.pdf
@yo': ^^ try this one

yo'
@PauloCereda I've tried this one before I think, pswrite gives error, ps2write doesn't convert

@yo' Oh. :(

yo'
7:05 PM
@PauloCereda and SVG works, but the result is AWFUL!

@yo' :(

yo'
but it's pdf2svg that makes a bad work
and importing via inkscape and direct export doesn't remove the fonts
how can I install Palatino slanted as a system font?
The slanted font doesn't work :(
And moreover, you can't get the slanted font as a system font! :( @Paulo

@DavidCarlisle :)

@yo' Couldn't you send the PDF with all embedded fonts?

yo'
7:22 PM
@PauloCereda they rejected the file because it's not in curves

yo'
7:58 PM
@PauloCereda Before I finally do it, you say you'd prefer the line not to go under the drawing?

@yo' I like the second better.

yo'
@PauloCereda ok. I finally will use an online converter to generate a SVG and re-convert back.

@yo' Oh my.

@yo' Till mentioned that SVG would be a nice additional output format for TikZ, because of its animation support and easily being cross-platform

yo'
@StefanKottwitz well, tell me how to convert PDF from fonts to curves

8:05 PM
@yo' the outline package

yo'
@StefanKottwitz like a TeX package?

yes ( I did not read all above)

yo'
@StefanKottwitz well, outline package seems to provide some enumerate thingy: ctan.org/pkg/outline

@yo' Btw. I don't like that Internet-monopolist mail-address too much :-o

yo'
@StefanKottwitz what do you mean? Like that my mail address is the most important thing? Well, it is :)

8:08 PM
@yo' tohecz is freely registrable as .net, .org, .com, ...

yo'
@StefanKottwitz ah this thing. No, thanks, I'm happy for now :)

@yo' happyfornow@gmail.com? :-)

yo'
@StefanKottwitz lol
> Someone already has that username. Try another?

@yo' at gmail?

@yo' someonealreadyhasthatusername@gmail.com

yo'
8:11 PM
@StefanKottwitz yes
hey guyZ! are you mocking of me? :D

@yo' But another is not free. But they still recommend it.

yo'
@StefanKottwitz lol
now what's this outline thingy? You seem to know it exists -- under a different name?

@yo': could you send me your PDF? I'd like to try something here.

yo'
@PauloCereda I will

8:13 PM
@yo' Thanks. :)

@yo' ah, it was the contour package

@StefanKottwitz: You are the airplane dude. Where do I insert my FlyingBlue ID thingy? During the check-in? :)

@PauloCereda I got a yellow ID thingy, don't know the other one

@StefanKottwitz I wub you. <3

yo'
@PauloCereda mail sent
@StefanKottwitz contour is also something different. I just need to convert text to curves, i.e., so that the PDF file contains no text, only graphics

8:22 PM
@yo' if you need it for just one PDF, I own Illustrator—I could outline the fonts for you. I didn't read the full discussion above, but it looked like the command-line ways were not fully working for you?

yo'
@PaulGessler were not working at all, to be more precise :)
actually, all was fine, until URWPalladioL-Roma-Slant_167

@yo' Ok, vectorizing a screenshot bitmap :-o

@yo' uh oh. I don't think I have that font either. :-( So I might not be much use.

yo'
@StefanKottwitz that's naughty
@PaulGessler it's embedded in the file (as subset)

@yo' ok, then I can give it a shot if you wish. My email address should be found on my GitHub page.

8:28 PM
STOP TEH PRESSES!
inkscape --without-gui --file=vizitka.pdf --export-pdf=bloodyfilewithoutfontsihateyouadobe.pdf -T
@yo': ^^

@PauloCereda If this works I think @yo' should send it directly to the printer with that filename. :-)

@PaulGessler <3
But Inkscape gets one page at a time.
Maybe pdfseparate then pdfunite. :)
Clumsy but it might work. :)

yo'
@PauloCereda the slanted font gets unslantified :(

@yo' aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

yo'
thebloodyslantedfont.pfb is what I need

8:33 PM
@yo': I think you need to carve the PDF from bits. :)

yo'
@PauloCereda LOL
@PaulGessler Mail sent.
@Paulo your method works for all but the slanted text :(
I could make the slant manually maybe

@yo' Damn slanted text!
:)

yo'
ah no, it does not, for now
I need to install anttor as a system font

Do you guys like to listen to songs in your MP3 players?
Of couse, an MP3 player is for listening to songs. :P

yo'
@PauloCereda that's what you have it for, isn't it?
I mean, mine can play videos on the 2" monitor, I can watch pom

8:42 PM
@yo' I apologized. :)
@yo' ooh 4k porn.
I have an iPod shuffle which can only hold 2GB of songs. I was wondering if I should reduce the bit rate of my MP3's to 64k or lower and add as much songs as it can hold. Does this sound like a good plan?

yo'
@PauloCereda no, not at all. Anything under 256kb, or VBR2, is horrible

@yo' got it, and working on it. Adobe is requiring me to update some stuffs before proceeding... :-|

yo'
@PaulGessler ok, I cross your fingers :)
@PaulGessler If you haven't got it by now (or you don't want to feed your curiosity yourself), then probably leave it be, I got it done using image.online-convert.com/convert-to-svg

9:00 PM
@yo' ok, glad you got it. I will keep trying (for my own curiousity). It appears Adobe moved my cheese, and from the looks of some forum posts I have found, it might not even be possible anymore. :-(

yo'
@PaulGessler C'est incroyable!

9:26 PM
@yo' ugh, I give up if you already got something else working. Sorry, after three updates now (don't really like this new Creative Cloud business) it seems confirmed that my old method no longer works. :-(

yo'
@PaulGessler :-(

@yo' you do have a working file now, yes?

yo'
@PaulGessler I have one that doesn't contain any text and looks fine even at 6400%, so it should be ok. I'll see what the printer company replies.

@yo' ok cool, sorry I could not help more.

yo'
@PaulGessler don't worry my friend

10:02 PM
@Johannes_B, @ChristianHupfer: ^^
Unless of course, GEMA protects you both. :)
That and Jamaica Firewall Farewell. :)

10:21 PM
@PauloCereda: Banana boat song for Mr. Banana?

10:58 PM
@ChristianHupfer Who? :)
