12:00 AM
@lockstep sigh I was hoping to avoid that, ok, one second, I'll edit it in.

@egreg There's no way to remember them, though the editors help a lot. :) Internal processing is a good example for a high number of parameters.

@PauloCereda Yes: you are programming them and it should be in control. But some comments to the code are in order anyway. :)

@egreg Agreed! :) If you count the lines of my codes, probably 50% of them are comments. I forget easily. :P

12:17 AM
How do I put a superscript into my question?

@Canageek <sup>1</sup>?

@lockstep There, how is that for a MWE? looks innocent

Am I seeing another Cthulhu madman speech?

@egreg It was close to the knights who say Ni!

@egreg Felt more fun then a ipsum

12:30 AM
@Canageek I edited it a bit -- now it really compiles. ;-)
(And upvoted.)

Speaking of Lorem Ipsum, I'm thinking of writing a "meatier lorem ipsum" based on this one: baconipsum.com

@lockstep Wha? I copied that straight out of the document after compiling.

\usepackage{bacon}

@Canageek Have a look. :-)

@lockstep I don't like doing that, because it can give errors if you don't purge all your files each time you compile, but sure, if it makes it easier for people to help.

12:32 AM
@Canageek Believe me, it does.
OK, friends, I need some sleep. Good night!

@lockstep Good night! :)

@PauloCereda It might be an option for lipsum

@egreg Yes. :) Now I just need to figure out how. :P

@lockstep Sleep well
Three questions in one day @.@

Q: How do I make biblatex-chicago flow from one page to the next more often?

CanageekI've noticed four things when writing my current essay: LaTeX will automatically cause your title to be moved to the next page to avoid having the title and paragraph on separate pages This on occasion leaves a really annoying amount of whitespace on a page, which is doubling annoying when you ...

Also: 100% accept rate, what does that mean? I've had a question closed as a duplicate.

@PauloCereda The lipsum package is quite easy: there's a first part to define the "interval" mechanism and then a long list of paragraphs.

12:47 AM
Asking questions is a good thing, provided they are on topic, right?

@Canageek Sure! Besides, we are all friends. :)
@egreg Hm I'll take a look in the code and try to understand it. :)

@PauloCereda Now if I could just get you all addicted to RPGs so that my questions on RPG.SX would get answers >.>

@Canageek hehe! The last time I suggested a game here, we had a disaster:
Jun 23 at 12:22, by Seamus
Damn. Now I want to go and find bridge building games instead of proofreading this paper...
:)

@PauloCereda I strongly suspect there is a German strategy about building bridges. Also if I ever get around to it expect lots of questions about how to format D&D adventures in LaTeX. I hope LuaTeX is pretty good by then, as there is a TTF font I want to use.

@Canageek Cool! :)

1:00 AM
I don't suppose anyone here speaks German?

Apparently, everybody here knows German, but me. :)
Well, bed time. Good night! :)

@PauloCereda I can understand something of written German. Just because I know Bach's cantatas and passions. :)
By the way, I've got a prototype of bacon.sty. Just an exercise for using xparse.
But I fear it's not politically correct. :(

1:23 AM
@egreg I just need to make sure that Volkswagen did indeed mean People’s car. Google translate gave me another meaning of wagen at first.

1:44 AM
has done more work on the tag wiki to make up for some many questions tonight

4 hours later…
5:46 AM
@lockstep Hey, when you get back on, someone answered the question: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/34865/…

@Canageek Not just someone, one of the two people he predicted would be likely to have an answer: chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/2432589#2432589

6:55 AM
@Canageek I see the message only now: pay attention that Google Translate uses the verb "wagen" if you write it all lowercase; try "Wagen" and you'll see that the main meaning is "car".

3 hours later…
9:48 AM
@egreg Really? That sounds great. :)

Q: Xelatex, \hyperlink and how to open links in new window

joannaI'm using a macro for links and they works perfect when I click them in a pdf viewer, but when I'm in a browser links don`t open in a new window just in the same. Do you know how to change that ? They really need to be open in new window. Here is my code: \documentclass[landscape,a4paper,11pt]...

I'm afraid this question has nothing to do with TeX and friends. This seems to be more related with the underlying OS.

@PauloCereda And is a duplicate

@MartinScharrer It is? Oh. :)

10:31 AM
@PauloCereda I've answered to the ComicSans question. Nobody else seemed like to do it and my sense of duty prevailed. :)

10:44 AM
@egreg I upvoted it. :) Great answer, specially the advice.

1 hour later…
11:59 AM
@PauloCereda Six upvotes and no downvote! :) But no comment, either.
10 to rep cap

2 hours later…
1:42 PM
@egreg rep cap! Yay!

@PauloCereda Another time. :( Just joking.

@egreg I'm close to rep cap too! Only... 200 to go. :)

@PauloCereda If you never answer! You should've answered to the ComicSans question.

@egreg I wasn't sure. :) I need more confidence, I usually open my editor and try the code several times before posting an answer. But then I'm not fast enough, e.g., tex.stackexchange.com/questions/34278/…

2:17 PM
@PauloCereda This website forces some kind of competitive question answering, you have to develop a strategy to answer fast.

@AndreyVihrov Indeed. I need a better strategy and more expertise. :)

@egreg I guess you'll have to figure out the downvoter to know it. (You can view what other people upvoted and downvoted, so this should be possible ;-)
Hmm, or at least I have seen that somewhere in the interface

2:32 PM
@AndreyVihrov I'm not interested in who downvoted, but why. Maybe the answer was too technical?

@egreg I see no problem with that, because a non-technical answer is also present.

Even though we do not see that as a problem or as undesirable, others might

3:01 PM
@AndreyVihrov Well, I got a Nice Answer for that nevertheless. :)

Any idea what this OP means exactly?:

Q: Beamer to not output PDF automatically in presentation mode

J SpenI am using beamer with the wkbeamer theme in Emacs and I can't figure out how to get it to not output in presentation mode, which is quite annoying when creating the document. Every time I view it the flag is set to automatically launch in presentation mode. Does anyone have experience in this ma...

@MartinScharrer Could be that the PDF viewer opens in fullscreen mode.

@TorbjørnT Yes, maybe.

When he views the output, that is.
wkbeamer sets pdfpagemode={FullScreen} in hypersetup, so I guess that's it.
@MartinScharrer Damn, you're too fast, was almost done with writing my answer.

@TorbjørnT Yes, I figured that out as well. Had to google that theme first.

3:15 PM
@MartinScharrer Yeah, me too.

@TorbjørnT I added a link to the website now.
His use of "presentation mode" confused me at first, because beamer has its own presentation mode!

Friends, for the next blog post, I was thinking of chatroom pearls. What do you think? :)

@MartinScharrer: some viewers have a special presentation mode, which is not identical to fullscreen mode (kpdf for isntance).

@wh1t3 Thanks. But I think that's not configurable with LaTeX.

3:32 PM
neither do I, I was merely trying to explain why he might have been using the term :)
I used kpdf and it has the tendency to open in presentation mode anything that has anything to do with beamer, which does not work at all with my window manager. So I just have my build process for beamer projects set up to use evince instead.

3:44 PM
Can't imagine that
http://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/34934/add-a-new-page-in-latex
isn't a dupe. Can't find it anywhere though....

Q: add a new page in latex

cMinorI have a tex file which is like my main, \documentclass[spanish]{article} \usepackage{times} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{graphicx} \usepackage[activeacute,spanish]{babel} \usepackage{epsfig} \usepackage[T1]{fontenc} \usepackage[utf8]{inputenc} \use...

Ok, so you don't just have to put it on a line by itself, it also needs to be in a message by itself...

Q: Axis with trigonometric PGFPlots

Regis da SilvaHow do I play one shaft with trigonometric PGFPlots?

"play one shaft"?

4:30 PM
@JosephWright It's a bad translation from Portuguese. I think he wants to display one axis. (Although not clear which one.)

@JosephWright Ah Brazilian Portuguese <-> English strikes again. It's supposed to be "axis"
@AlanMunn <3

Ah, something like "Display only x-axis (pgfplots)"

Yes. :)

It's hard to tell if his questions are bad because of the English or despite the English. Although it might seem like the latter, it could be that he writes very little to avoid English altogether.

@PauloCereda How would it be in Portuguese?

4:41 PM
@egreg I suspect he tried some translator tool and used the phrase "reproduzir um eixo" (reproduce/recreate an axis), but it got translated as "play one shaft".

@PauloCereda Google translate gives "albero" as first choice for "shaft" from English into Italian. :(

@egreg Oh my! :)
@AlanMunn Indeed. His questions are strong candidates for our tag.

5:01 PM
@PauloCereda Well that too. But there are some where he posts a bit of code and not much else (like the initial version of his 'interfaces' question that I answered.)
@PauloCereda But he must get something for having such a cute picture on his blog: grandeportal.blogspot.com

@AlanMunn True. :D

What do people think of the potential dupe for

Q: Russian, Cyrillic in TeX

cipsI want to add a quote in Russian to my thesis. It is pretty long, so I wouldn't like to use as input any transliteration based method, basically because I wouldn't get the right hyphenation (and because writing in Cyrillic should be very possible). Codes like \usepackage[T2A]{fontenc} \usepackag...

6:23 PM
Hello

Hi! :)

6:43 PM
@Andy Hello

@PauloCereda Yes, you're patching the macro in the wrong way; try the answer and tell me. :)

@egreg Fantastic! It works like a charm. :)
I had no idea how should I do it. :)

@PauloCereda Did you have any doubt? :)
I just chased until I found the macro that did the final setup..

@egreg "oh ye oh ye of little faith". :)

This evening Italy is playing Uruguay. No comments or answer until the end of the match.

6:57 PM
@egreg Really? I'll take a look on TV. :)
@egreg: Would you like me to accept it now or wait until tomorrow? :)

@PauloCereda Wait, as it should be the rule.

@egreg Sure! :)
Yay, I can watch the game! I found a channel which will broadcast it. :)

@PauloCereda Do you know the words of the national anthem?

@egreg No, not yet. :( I only know the melody.

I can't decide which one is worse between the Italian and the Brazilian anthems.
Musically speaking, of course.

7:04 PM
@egreg Oh come on: you got Verdi to write yours!
We get a dismal dirge
which bangs on about an octagenarian

@egreg The Brazilian anthem is too long. They usually sing only the first verse, but it's still long. :)
You'll like my piano version of our anthem. I'll try to record a video on it.

@JosephWright No, our anthem music was written by Novaro, words by Goffredo Mameli.

@egreg I see
Still probably my favourite (although it's close with the French)

@JosephWright I learned the British anthem with my English teacher. :)

Novaro was not a very famous musician, nor Mameli was a known poet; but he died very young in the defense of the "Roman Republic" in 1849.

7:09 PM
@PauloCereda Why?
(I hope only the first verse!)

Train arriving. See ya.

@JosephWright They thought we could better learn from lyrics. :)
@egreg See ya! :)
@JosephWright How many are there? I know the first and one about some gifts.

@PauloCereda About 4, I think. Apart from the first one, the only famous line is 'crush the rebellious Scots' in either verse 3 or 4
That line causes some trouble :-)

I had no idea. :)

Some fun from the Teachers' Lounge

7:17 PM
@JosephWright great! :)

7:34 PM
@Canageek My Langenscheidt (the German dictionary) has 'Wagen 1. a) vehicle, b) car, c) lorry, Am. truck, d) van. 2. wag(g)on, cart, 3. carriage (train).' then some other meanings too :-)

7:48 PM
@JosephWright My German teacher forced me to buy a "Langenscheidt Taschenwörterbuch Portugiesisch". I wasn't sure what it was until I actually saw it. :)

@JosephWright Now @cmhughes has edited the question. To me this seemed to have required some clairvoyance...

@AlanMunn Indeed, the 'crystal ball' owned by Robin Fairbarins seems to be required :-)

Wait a minute, it's all about pie then.
Oh, \pi.

@PauloCereda Actually pieces thereof.

8:10 PM
Bump. | reputation cap.

@AlanMunn Congrats!

@AlanMunn Clairvoyance indeed. I still think the question is a duplicate though

@cmhughes It probably is, if the question is about the labeling. From the original wording it wasn't clear if he wanted to get rid of e.g. the y axis since there was no mention of the labels. Of course, without sample code it's hard to tell whether the figure he produced was what he had so far or just an image from somewhere.

@AlanMunn I see your point; I agree that the original wording wasn't clear
@AlanMunn I would wager it was from somewhere else

@AlanMunn We also don't actually know if the edits are really correct
Regis has not said anything about the comments or edits

8:21 PM
@JosephWright I agree, the edits may not be correct.

@JosephWright Right. That was my point.

@AlanMunn @JosephWright Should it be rolled back then?

@cmhughes No, I don't think so. They seem to be reasonable based on what we know, so until there is an update from Regis I'd leave them in place.

@JosephWright Ok, thanks :)

I read the original text again. I think the OP wanted to say "How can I reproduce an axis with trigonometric marks using PGFPlots?". It would be a similar way to ask it in Portuguese.

8:26 PM
@AlanMunn Bump | out of votes :-)

@JosephWright: Er... the typo still remains: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/34947/… :P

@PauloCereda Drat - sorted

@JosephWright Yay! <3
Bump. | ♥
@JosephWright: noooo, now I'm addicted to that link you posted!

Q: expansion of loop macro

TimI have a macro that contains a loop using \@for and it works until I try to write its output to a file. The following document shows the problem. \documentclass{article} \makeatletter \newwrite\my@out \AtBeginDocument{\immediate\openout\my@out my.tmp} \AtEndDocument{\immediate\closeout\my@out} ...

@JosephWright He's watching the game, so it might take a while.

@PauloCereda Ha, a chance for someone else :-)

@AlanMunn Ouch. :)

Q: Contest: Show Off Your Skillz in TeX & Friends [TeX.sx birthday]

doncherryWhat's going on? TeX.sx turned one on November 11, 2011. This contest is part of our celebrations. This question doesn't meet the normal question form requirements on this site, but it is considered an exception, and was approved of on meta. What's the task? Show off the knowledge in TeX &am...

No new submissions?

10:01 PM
@JosephWright Nice answer. The alternative is to do the processing outside the \write using a token register or a macro; this is needed in case the \write is not \immediate and some parts need to be expanded presently (say a section number).

Yes, that was the point of my comment, but the problem in the question is specifically about expansion so I focussed on one approach

@egreg: bad game. :(

@PauloCereda They didn't seem very happy to play.

Would there be a point in asking about why not everything is expandable (delivering eternal pain to TeX programmers), or should I just RTFM until enligtenment?

@AndreyVihrov Seems like a valid question, although perhaps only DEK can give a complete answer :-)

10:16 PM
@JosephWright :-)

@JosephWright My copy of AoCP was lying on my table while I was trying to figure out who was this DEK guy. :P

@JosephWright Thanks for the editing to my answer to Paulo's question. I'm always writing \pachtcmd wrong. :)

10:52 PM
@AndreyVihrov I can't imagine how a \def could be expandable. Expansion and execution are performed at very different stages of processing.

Is there a simple alternative to \@for \do to iterate through a comma delimited list?

@AlanMunn The list parser from etoolbox, maybe?
I use it. :)
