@lockstep I don't like doing that, because it can give errors if you don't purge all your files each time you compile, but sure, if it makes it easier for people to help.
I've noticed four things when writing my current essay:
LaTeX will automatically cause your title to be moved to the next page to avoid having the title and paragraph on separate pages
This on occasion leaves a really annoying amount of whitespace on a page, which is doubling annoying when you ...
@PauloCereda I strongly suspect there is a German strategy about building bridges. Also if I ever get around to it expect lots of questions about how to format D&D adventures in LaTeX. I hope LuaTeX is pretty good by then, as there is a TTF font I want to use.
@Canageek I see the message only now: pay attention that Google Translate uses the verb "wagen" if you write it all lowercase; try "Wagen" and you'll see that the main meaning is "car".
I'm using a macro for links and they works perfect when I click them in a pdf viewer, but when I'm in a browser links don`t open in a new window just in the same. Do you know how to change that ? They really need to be open in new window.
Here is my code:
\documentclass[landscape,a4paper,11pt]...
@egreg I wasn't sure. :) I need more confidence, I usually open my editor and try the code several times before posting an answer. But then I'm not fast enough, e.g., tex.stackexchange.com/questions/34278/…
@egreg I guess you'll have to figure out the downvoter to know it. (You can view what other people upvoted and downvoted, so this should be possible ;-)
Hmm, or at least I have seen that somewhere in the interface
I am using beamer with the wkbeamer theme in Emacs and I can't figure out how to get it to not output in presentation mode, which is quite annoying when creating the document. Every time I view it the flag is set to automatically launch in presentation mode. Does anyone have experience in this ma...
neither do I, I was merely trying to explain why he might have been using the term :)
I used kpdf and it has the tendency to open in presentation mode anything that has anything to do with beamer, which does not work at all with my window manager. So I just have my build process for beamer projects set up to use evince instead.
I have a tex file which is like my main,
\documentclass[spanish]{article}
\usepackage{times}
\usepackage{amsmath}
\usepackage{graphicx}
\usepackage[activeacute,spanish]{babel}
\usepackage{epsfig}
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
\usepackage[utf8]{inputenc}
\use...
It's hard to tell if his questions are bad because of the English or despite the English. Although it might seem like the latter, it could be that he writes very little to avoid English altogether.
@egreg I suspect he tried some translator tool and used the phrase "reproduzir um eixo" (reproduce/recreate an axis), but it got translated as "play one shaft".
@PauloCereda Well that too. But there are some where he posts a bit of code and not much else (like the initial version of his 'interfaces' question that I answered.)
@PauloCereda But he must get something for having such a cute picture on his blog: grandeportal.blogspot.com
I want to add a quote in Russian to my thesis. It is pretty long, so I wouldn't like to use as input any transliteration based method, basically because I wouldn't get the right hyphenation (and because writing in Cyrillic should be very possible). Codes like
\usepackage[T2A]{fontenc}
\usepackag...
@Canageek My Langenscheidt (the German dictionary) has 'Wagen 1. a) vehicle, b) car, c) lorry, Am. truck, d) van. 2. wag(g)on, cart, 3. carriage (train).' then some other meanings too :-)
@JosephWright My German teacher forced me to buy a "Langenscheidt Taschenwörterbuch Portugiesisch". I wasn't sure what it was until I actually saw it. :)
@cmhughes It probably is, if the question is about the labeling. From the original wording it wasn't clear if he wanted to get rid of e.g. the y axis since there was no mention of the labels. Of course, without sample code it's hard to tell whether the figure he produced was what he had so far or just an image from somewhere.
I read the original text again. I think the OP wanted to say "How can I reproduce an axis with trigonometric marks using PGFPlots?". It would be a similar way to ask it in Portuguese.
I have a macro that contains a loop using \@for and it works until I try to write its output to a file. The following document shows the problem.
\documentclass{article}
\makeatletter
\newwrite\my@out
\AtBeginDocument{\immediate\openout\my@out my.tmp}
\AtEndDocument{\immediate\closeout\my@out}
...
What's going on?
TeX.sx turned one on November 11, 2011. This contest is part of our celebrations. This question doesn't meet the normal question form requirements on this site, but it is considered an exception, and was approved of on meta.
What's the task?

@JosephWright Nice answer. The alternative is to do the processing outside the \write using a token register or a macro; this is needed in case the \write is not \immediate and some parts need to be expanded presently (say a section number).
Would there be a point in asking about why not everything is expandable (delivering eternal pain to TeX programmers), or should I just RTFM until enligtenment?
