00:00 - 19:0019:00 - 22:00

7:00 PM
so the entire department has been scattered throughout the campus

that was part of my refusal, Kaj.

oh, I misread "for manifolds" as "of manifolds". apologies.

@Ted: You can approximate it... and if you can promote it to an actual tangent bundle uou get a smooth manifold. This is all smoothing theory stuff

we don't need Balarka learning micro bundles Mike

LOL

7:02 PM
dunevenknow what a microbundle is

good

microbundles sounds like the statistical mechanics of manifolds :P

I should have deleted my subversive messages above when I still had the chance. Now my radical opinions will be archived forever.

@Ted: I avoided the word on purpose

I'm not googling things, don't worry.

7:03 PM
i should perhaps say "quantum mechanics" there, but i have in mind thermodynamics v. statistical mechanics

Call me stupid, Mike.

@TedShifrin o/ your favorite awful annoying student is back :P

@TedShifrin, Eddie claims to be moving to SF. I feel like the math community has it's own manifest destiny.

climate-wise, SF seems like the anti-Minnesota

salut @Hippa

7:05 PM
@Semiclassical: Completely unrelated.

i.e. weather is always pretty mild (?) v. swinging between sweaty summers and withering winters

there are reasons beyond math we both pick CA, Kaj

Ted wants to be buried at sea, so why not live in a place that'll soon be underwater?

i didn't say Seattle!

On the other hand, maybe we'll desal the rising tides and make more alfalfa with the water

7:10 PM
Alfalfa :D I love that thing

Hippa, what has become of baby Hippa?

I saw him logged in yesterday, so I guess he's still alive; I'll see him tomorrow anyway

ah.

just finished dinner. have to ponder on tangent spaces.

7:50 PM
After I publish my book, another dream of mine would be to meet all those that ever had to say something about my math and give them a lesson about math (I hope I'm not evil saying that). :-)
(I can't ask for so much from life, publishing some books is already a great thing ;))

need a quick check on my logic for something i'm writing out

I'm calculating now $$\int_0^{\pi/2} \arctan\left(\sin ^4(x)\right) \, dx$$

hmm. that looks intriguing

@Chris'ssistheartist Btw if I'm not answering to you lately if not that I'm ignoring you, I'm just less on my computer because I have more work :-)

@Hippalectryon Just kidding! :D

7:57 PM
:((( what are you thinking xD

@Hippalectryon I guesssed you were very busy these days. :-)

But I still need to come every so often to make sure your book doesn't get published without me knowing it :D
2

@Hippalectryon Oh, you need to see something
Wait ...
@Hippalectryon ^^^

k got it :D that looks great
It looks very nice, it seems simple at first glance :c I highly doubt it is simple though

@MikeMiller I don't even understand what this question is asking for.

8:01 PM
@Chris'ssistheartist substituting $t=\sin\theta$ and plugging into mathematica gives a result of
>3/16 [Pi] HypergeometricPFQ[{1/2, 5/8, 7/8, 9/8, 11/8}, {3/4, 5/4, 3/2, 3/2}, -1]

@Hippalectryon I have the generalization to it (the one I created it). I also work on other very interesting generalizations.

and mathematica doesn't give any simplifications to that, though i've found it's not great at spotting such things

@Semiclassical Yes, but you can also get a result expressed in polylogarithms. :-)

not surprised :P

@BalarkaSen: I think the correct answer to what they're asking is "If you cannot read the answers to that question, you should learn more, first."

8:03 PM
@Hippalectryon I can say I used a very clever trick.

hah, yeah. you should post that as a comment in the question.
i think it should be closed as unclear of what you're asking or as too broad or as off topic

there are usually ways of manipulating Hypergeometric PFQs, but i never remember

the issue you need to figure out now is which one among the three it should be :D

I gave them an example.

@Hippalectryon but at the same time all is done elementarily. :-)

8:06 PM
Will those be in tour book ? :-D

@Hippalectryon This one will be definitely included to my book in its generalized form. Actually it's already there. :-)

@MikeMiller upvoted

@Semiclassical Yeah, but maybe we can use some simple tricks and get a nice form easily. :D

@Chris'ssistheartist i guess im not evil too when i start lecturing you about programming basics :D

8:09 PM
@Agawa001 :-)))))))))) Well, there is a thing: I like to be honest and I appreciate people from which I can learn stuff, but I dislike those that make fun of others' knowledge without excelling in anything. :-)

you are already skillful in mathematica :)

@Agawa001 It's hard when you're on a way alone, you are your own professors, and push yourself, sometimes for long periods of time without seeing the light from the end of the tunnel. Of course, you don't need to meet people to discourage you. :-)

@Chris'ssistheartist Why did you remove the :)))))) par hasard?

@IWantToRemainAnonymous I didn't remove anything. What you mean? :-)

this face is bearded like santa cruz

8:13 PM
@Chris'ssistheartist Let's reformulate it this way. Let $\mathcal S_1=\text{:-)}$, $\mathcal S_2=\text{:-))}$, ...etc Why did you reduce $\mathcal S_6$ to $\mathcal S_1$? :-)

@IWantToRemainAnonymous Chins diet

@IWantToRemainAnonymous Perhaps it wasn't me, or it happened without realizing it. ;)
Besides that, making fun of people makes no sense to me (it leads you where?), excelling in Mathematics is my important objective and getting amazing results.
2

@Chris'ssistheartist yea its hard, im self-instructed and i know how is hard to see a clouded sky which hides stars that lead you home

@Agawa001 Only a self-educated like you that worked very hard can understand my point because you went that way. :-)
@Hippalectryon in the last period of time I got incredibly many very nice results, but I shared less.

@Chris'ssistheartist :-)
(btw guys don't star every single message it clutters the star board, only star the best :P )
2
Urm ... who just starred that q_q

8:25 PM
you will be banned from starring if you keep doing this right @robjohn ?

@Hippalectryon la vache

Yeah I'm hoping a mod will delete all those stars :( unfortunatey in the process it also deletes the genuine stars
@IWantToRemainAnonymous Rob est sympa

regarde juste son air rigoureux

they will
see
:D

8:30 PM
a foggy cloud is hiding these stars or what ?

There's a warm wind blowing the stars around.

i cant find my way to wisdom without significant starring

thanks

:23894045 Google Translate only gets part of that...

@robjohn googletranslate isnt slangy :p

8:41 PM
@Agawa001 yeah... the first word doesn't go through

Those pictures make me think of IQ tests I took during the time. Some AAA are BBB, and some BBB are CCC. Then can we say that some AAA are definitely BBB?

@Agawa001 However, if the apostrophe is replaced by a 'u' it does

its just a vulgar form interjection (sh*t, damn, etc) and i think its a ban word

@Chris'ssistheartist Nop

@Chris'ssistheartist It is a Venn Diagram

8:45 PM
@robjohn Yeap! (the best tool I know to solve such questions) :-)
@IWantToRemainAnonymous Yeap ;)

@Chris'ssistheartist do you mean some AAA are definitely CCC ?

Aka Euler diagram :-)

@Agawa001 That one is a question: Then can we say that some AAA are definitely BBB?

that sounds meaningless to me

@Agawa001 Think for instance of people with a certain citizenship. In intersections you have people with double citizenship. (if this helps to have another representation of my question)

8:53 PM
@Chris'ssistheartist i still cant get why does the asker repeat a previous affirmation as a question ?

@Agawa001 It's a question I received at an interview (part of an IQ test).
Ooooo, my bad (I noticed now)
@Agawa001 Then can we say that some AAA are definitely CCC?

and i think im getting high due to coffee-milk overdose

(lol, I didn't even realize I used wrong notation - at these hours my eyes hurt)

yea thats how should it appear
it happens
and yes we can say so

Looks like a typo.

8:56 PM
we cant rather say "all AAA are CCC"

@Rigor It's that kind of thing that you have it right in mind but then write it wrongly.

and your mind insists until somepoint that one realize that he cant even trust his mind :O

@Agawa001 :D

@Chris'ssistheartist i think we cant say that unfortunately

@Agawa001 With Venn diagrams in mind all is so clear.
@Agawa001 Indeed.

9:01 PM
@Chris'ssistheartist that is the nature of typos :(

@Rigor Or your fingers do not listen to you. :-)

if 1 and 2 are AAA 3,4=BBB 5,6=CCC, if 1=BBB and 3=CCC , 1 isnt CCC
in this case : the intersection is void
oh, so sleepy i need to hit the bed now, see ya

see ya ;)
@Rigor what do you think about the idea that mind can be educated to excel in any science without being genetically gifted?

I agree.

OK, I agree too. :-)

9:11 PM
:-)
Unfortunately, there are those who are genetically gifted who take advantage of those who are not @Chris'ssistheartist

@Chris'ssistheartist I agree too

@Rigor well, let me look at something
Kind of question I was asking in 2012
@Rigor Now I attend the stuff by Ramanujan, and more than that, I develop it, and in the meantime I created around 20000 questions.
All that without being genetically gifted. It's not bad, right? All by extremely hard work, doing math steadily.

Yes.

9:33 PM
@Rigor I'm glad I'm just a simple person able to do such stuff by very hard work and much passion. This also proves that by passion, very hard work all is possible.

Indeed, these are necessary ingredients.

I'm aware of no one that ever excelled in anything without a crazy amount of passion and very hard work.
4
@Rigor Indeed.
