@TedShifrin don't shout bomb or anything

I once liked a girl called Debra and her sister's name is @sarah

lol @BalarkaSen

@WillHunting my sisters called Debbie which is close :P

8:01 PM
@BalarkaSen you are good at spotting speech patterns

@sarah OMG, what a coincidence, lol.

@WillHunting my sisters like 9 so I don't think it was her :P

Hey I would like to ask the Americans here. What is your favourite dictionary?

M-W

@Alizter Yeah, I am not sick.

8:03 PM
I think I only know 2
M-W and Oxford

@Alizter There are many more girls than your mom and your sister

sigh
im leaving

lol

bye

i daren't meet them, @sarah.
i daren't.

8:04 PM
alizter gets pissed off really quickly

temperamental

well, the chatroom sure became a craproom since you started posting, @sarah

its because he can't pronounce combinatorics
@BalarkaSen I thought you blocked me?
carry on blocking me

Today the news said that American teens like to buy new clothes every week.

@sarah i have more worthwhile things to do than blocking you

8:06 PM
@PedroTamaroff you just missed Ted

@WillHunting really?

@sarah Yup, the news here. I am in Singapore.

I'm scared to go to Singapore

My google-fu is failing, anyone here familiar with countable sequences of independant events in probability theory?

@WillHunting What is your address? I will post you gum.

8:09 PM
lol

@IceBoy Oh noes.

Hello @Pedro

@sarah You can email me at jasperloy at outlook dot com. I think I am beginning to like you more and more, lol.

@Alan Independent evens.

8:10 PM
Again with the craps.
@PedroTamaroff Any interesting problem you have in mind?

I don't like to gamble anyway

@BalarkaSen I would be worried if that picture came out of my ass.

@nablablah I need to pay 100 SGD to enter the casino

@sarah What's your real name?

@JasperLoy Why

8:10 PM
@WillHunting Not a good idea.

@PedroTamaroff guess

@BalarkaSen Hm, let me think.

I bet it's Debra

@PedroTamaroff I know yours is Peter

everyone knows

8:11 PM
we played this game

@nablablah OMG. Anyway Debra got married to another guy earlier this year.

ahem ahem hem hem
as usual
sad I can't search for images in chatboxes.

I just think that @sarah's real name is @sarah.

8:12 PM
@PedroTamaroff goil
in a boston accent

lol

@WillHunting is theoretically from boston
but hes gone to see about a girl

@sarah What is your favourite calculus book?

@sarah Ok.

@Alizter Strictly speaking, he's gone to see about a girl.

8:14 PM
@WillHunting spivak or finney. Because I don't have too much monies

:-O is that a record?

@sarah OK. I just ordered Marsden's Calculus I, II and III from amazon.com, pretty good.

@WillHunting I have some analysis books lying around somewhere
they start off as a calc text

@sarah I would like to share with you my 12 holy books.

8:15 PM
share with her, not with us

@WillHunting Sorry I don't believe in Jeebus

no no god no

@BalarkaSen haha

@anon How's it going?

good

8:16 PM
What've you been up to?

I remember when the chat used to be lined with @Peter, @Anon, @Peter ....

@sarah My 12 holy books are Marsden's Calculus I, Calculus II, Calculus III; Cohn's Classic Algebra, Basic Algebra, Further Algebra; Rudin's Mathematical Analysis, Real and Complex Analysis, Functional Analysis; Lee's Topological Manifolds, Smooth Manifolds, Riemannian Manifolds.

good old days

oh, just school

Last year i tink

8:17 PM
@JasperLoy you need to remove some
12 is not a holy number

@WillHunting Rudin. That is somewhere in my house.

10 is

@sarah Marsden, Cohn and Rudin are dead.

Pedro, anon, Mike, Karl, Alex and Ted were chat regulars @Alizter

@WillHunting So is Shakespeare.

8:18 PM
and Gauss

hahah Gauss that's epic.
oh you were rerplying to @Will's comment LOL

have you read his book on arithmetic?

me? no.

@nablablah I like the idea that it is 4 times 3.

8:22 PM
@sarah are you just jealous

@nablablah what because i'm not a sexual predator?

@JasperLoy I think I liked 3 times 3 better

12 is very interesting. it is the only number that can be written as a product of 4 and 3 in two ways uniquely.

lol Very funny @Balarka

@sarah I guess you are not gonna email me, lol.

8:23 PM
@JasperLoy my new e-mail is fa@tfwno.gf

@WillHunting oh sorry. What should I mail you?

@sarah You can just let me know your email address. I have those of about 30 SE folks.
@nablablah You are joking right?

@JasperLoy No, that is my real e-mail

@nablablah So I should change my records now? Are you sure?

Yes

8:25 PM
@WillHunting Do you know Jo Swanson?

>mfw

@sarah No.

He is the paraplegic guy in family guy. I find his dialogue hilarious.

wat @anon

a\s\l?

8:26 PM
a/s/l?

@nablablah I am going to send an email to that address now.

/join #math

Ok @JasperLoy

@anon say huh?

@anon Wrong tab?

8:28 PM
joke

great snakes

some people have 30+ tabs open

@anon has decided to communicate with one-word chat messages

@nablablah Just to confirm, I should change my record of your email to the new one?

Yes @JasperLoy

8:31 PM
welp

you mean help, @anon?

@nablablah Done. Please let me know if you change again. Mine will always be jasperloy at outlook dot com.

Ok, thanks

@IceBoy 111 if I didn't miscount ;)

Jun 8 at 22:54, by RegDwigнt
So Jasper talks about porn in this room, but about poo in ours. No fair.

@DanielFischer omg r u serious?

8:38 PM
@IceBoy Yes.

-_-

I should probably close a dozen or so.

@DanielFischer but still, that is taking multitasking to a whole new level

i have probably 16 or 17 open now. nothing compared to 111 of course

@IceBoy Most of them are not active. I'm no good at multitasking.

8:41 PM
icic

Just a lot of things I'd like to keep half an eye on to check for further developments every now and then.

Wow, I only have a max of 10 open at a time.

I usually bookmark a lot
there are thousands of bookmarks on the bookmark folder now at the moment, i think

@IceBoy Are you here?

@BalarkaSen if I'm searching for something, I like to leave a "trail" of open tabs to follow backwards on
@WillHunting yes

8:45 PM
@IceBoy I thought about it, and I think it is better we not post the post on meta. Shall we delete it together now?

@WillHunting sure, if you want

@IceBoy OK, first you unaccept my answer, so I can delete my answer, so you can delete the question, get it?

A professor visited me this weekend, and amongst other things we discussed he wanted to mention that for him it's an intriguing thing that I'm able to come up with things that he can't create, do. My answer to this was pretty simple: as long as I study, learn and I'm not pride enough such that I refuse to learn from the others, I'm going to be damn good. Yeah, exactly so.

@Alizter your bessel is interesting

I often see people that think they know too much, they don't need to learn from the others, but these ones, in my humble opinion, are lost, stuck on an inferior level, and they are going to remain there for ever.

8:47 PM
@Chris'ssis who?

And happily, this is down
$$\int_0^1 \frac{\log(1-x) \log(x) \log(1+x)}{1+x} \ dx$$

You seem to be like one of those people, @Chris'ssis, but that's just the impression that I get.

@IceBoy Still here? See my above message?

@WillHunting there is an interesting comment on your answer now

@IceBoy Yup, but I think I just want the whole post gone...

8:52 PM
@WillHunting done

@Khallil With the lack of respect you'll get nothing in life. For instance, you'll never ever receive an answer from me again. Last days when I helped you, you wanted to seem thankful.

@IceBoy Done, now your turn.

@WillHunting are you sure?

@IceBoy Yes. It should not be there in the first place, strictly speaking.

@WillHunting done

8:54 PM
@IceBoy Thanks pal. =)

@WillHunting happy?

It's just the impression that I get. I'm not saying that you are such a person. I'm simply saying that you come off that way on the internet. Tone is lost on the internet. For all I know, you could be saying things very differently and I've not picked up on the sincerity, @Chris'ssis.

@IceBoy Yes, lol.

:D
@WillHunting what about the math one?

@IceBoy But we got to see the different reaction on both sites.

8:55 PM
Please don't take it personally, @Chris'ssis.

@IceBoy It's already been deleted by the mods etc.

@WillHunting yes >8(

@Khallil OK OK OK (I won't)

Also, I personally don't mind if you don't want to help me. It's totally up to you. I'd feel bad if you felt pressured to help me, @Chris'ssis.

@Khallil And this is really true, no matter how good you are, you can learn a lot of things from the others and improve your level permanently.
Only if I think of the discussions with robjohn, wow, I learned a lot of things, hard to measure in words.

8:58 PM
I agree. Life is, after all, a collaborative effort. Nobody got anywhere without help from others, @Chris'ssis.

math is an odd subject in that you can do it alone if you want it that way

@IceBoy Yeah, you can, I also do it alone, I do my own reserach with nice results, but you cannot know everything. For instance, if you consider a certain problem, one day you may find out that someone has a very brilliant solution to that problem you didn't know about. I'm sure you'd be glad to learn it, maybe you can use it further on other similar problems.

Andrew Wiles worked completely alone for 7 years on Fermat's last theorem.
@Chris'ssis So they say.

@IceBoy Perelman would have never solved that famous problem without some previous results.

@IceBoy I have been working mostly alone on my mental problems the past 7 years, lol.

9:11 PM
Haven't you tried therapy, @Will?

@IceBoy I strongly recommend you this documentary, you'll understand better what efforts were behind that solution.

@Khallil Going to soon. Making an appointment now. I started meds only last year.

@Chris'ssis Thanks :-)

9:25 PM
@IceBoy Welcome :D

@Chris'ssis Exactly.
Even Wiles didn't solve FLT on his own you know.

@BalarkaSen I think so. I read some article about that a few years ago.

Interpreting diophantine problems over number fields using elliptic curves was a fashion in that time.
@Chris'ssis You are right in thinking that.
There were works of Ribet, Frey, Shimura and many others behind those stuff.

I'm just saying he worked alone for 7 years.

The real observation of the elliptic curve-modular forms relation was done by Eichler and Shimura actually.
@IceBoy He did.

9:30 PM
so they say

they may be right.
i am simply agreeing with @Chris'ssis

perhaps

works and approaches do NOT fall from skies.

@BalarkaSen True.

nor does an Oxford/Princeton professorship :-)

9:32 PM
erm, surely that needs hard work!

absolutely

Ha. I just recalled Iwasawa's quote, not entirely sure whether it's relevant though
"You want to hit home run without going to the spring training?"

that fits
the pitchers certainly go to spring training

i though we were talking of batters? ;)

yes, the two are competitive ideas, no?

9:37 PM
more or less

profs=pitchers

There is a superhydrophobic spray called NeverWet.
It is mindblowing

Go to sleep, @Alizter

@BalarkaSen its 22

22?

9:39 PM
10 pm

@BalarkaSen do you not use 24 hr?

Aha. All the modular arithmetic you've done you've forgotten, @Alizter?
=P

@BalarkaSen I always say 24 hr format
don't you guys?

no

I like to mod 12, thanks.

9:40 PM
the 24 hr clock has no 24th hour :D
23:59:59.999... = 0:00:00....

That NeverWet spray is amazing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZrjXSsfxMQ

Nothing =P.

@BalarkaSen Seriously check it out!

Not going to.
I don't care about sprays.
Well, except if you have a mosquito-killing spray.

It doesn't work

9:47 PM
@BalarkaSen Spray your books then you can read in the rain
@BalarkaSen Actualy if you spray yourself with it mosquitos may not be able to bite

can you make them glow, so I can read them in the dark?

@IceBoy set the book alight

burning books are hard to memorize

Oops.
Cat on the keyboard.

oops dinosaur on my keyboard

9:59 PM
I hate to say this but I actually LOLed.

good for you :)

oops :-)
