Like whatever you're trying to do, PHP will get the job done. It's a very flexible language, it's installed on basically every Unix system ever, and it's super easy to spin up a PHP script and get going. But that's pros usually aren't going to outweigh the cons, at least not for any large project.

But this also means you have a lot of people whose introduction to programming is PHP and then they go on to write real programs still in PHP because...masochism? The Blub Paradox?

Really the only reason to really go with PHP nowadays for a site build, in my opinion, is because you're building a site where a CMS like Wordpress or Drupal is great choice for. If not, you're better off using a framework, in which case you probably want to look at some non-PHP options.

@murgatroid99 that's kind of what I meant by the Blub Paradox; I mean, you're not going to be working on large scale stuff without at least being aware that there are other options out there, so you need a reason to discount them
