so. bout them vidya games

Well yes, fundamentalists gonna be foundamentalists

(walks in)
(walks out)

user15026
@badp Okay, I am not sure what you are questioning/not believing then

user15026
Because you seem surprised that the sexual divide is a thing, you seem to have labelled it as a "america" thing, and I am saying "totes not just an america thing"

user15026
america is just really good at being loud about the things

8:01 PM
It's something of a concentration matter

user15026
@badp What concentration of what?

like, every single time I hear about catholics and the such in America, it's something outrageously and deeply wrong

All I know is that maybe I want to see Sierra come back and do another Leisure Suit Larry game.

user15026
@badp Yes, because they're the loudest

and I probably don't hear about catholics and the such from other places.

8:02 PM
@Yuuki Did you decide on that Blind Guardian show yet?

user15026
and people are always gonna be loudest about the shitty things

@MadMAxJr they are doing a new king's quest. thats a start

user15026
confirmation bias, etc etc etc

user15026
@MadMAxJr That reminds me, I was playing those on Internet Archive

At any rate I am surprised and horrified for what something I feel remotely connected with did to poor spugsley.

8:03 PM
I saw Grave Digger last weekend and the singers voice is just broken beyond repair, the music is good, but his voice sounds so extremely broken live :(

user15026
Like i am not saying America is not full of Things that are Scary, but America is not the only place the Things that are Scary are Scary Things

@AshleyNunn I dunno, probably I hold the US to better standards than ISIS :)

user15026
@badp I am really not sure how you are relating those two things.

I'm just saying

user15026
@Arperum I kinda always wonder how metal scream-y stuff singers are able to sustain it long term.

user15026
8:05 PM
@badp I am not sure I understand.

basically all people who showed me that gender isn't binary, love isn't binary, etc., they all come from the same place where those assholes also come from
People here could probably reject both in equal measure.

@Arperum So that's a "don't buy tickets if you haven't yet"?

I like Grave Digger better when he was a monster truck.

@AshleyNunn There are huge differences among christians in this regard, we mostly have the harmless ones here.

user15026
@badp Well, I'm Canadian (we're not perfect though either)

8:06 PM
@AshleyNunn Grave digger is normally not screamy, it's a pretty raw voice and it killed his voice :( The screams/grunts require significant training to do without murdering your voice forever.

user15026
@MadScientist Truefacts :)

@AshleyNunn About the Mantis Shrimp?

I mean, yes, North America is a pretty big place with lots of people.

speaking of trashed voice i'll be seeing u2 next week

@Yuuki It isn't, Blind Guardian is still awesome, but Grave Digger is probably 20 years late to see them on their best.

8:07 PM
I'm probably naive in thinking that those people probably share some common cultural beliefs

user15026
@badp Yeaaaah, that's not something I'd do

user15026
That's like saying "All of Europe does the thing"

I don't know how much the tickets go, and I am far from subjective when it comes to Blind Guardian. See for example the part where I spent ~240€ on tickets/merch this tour, not including fuel costs of driving to the shows.

@AshleyNunn Well, yes, I do feel that some things happen in most of Europe and not in most of North America.

@Almo My voice is back to normal after last weekend, and the next festival is still 9 days away.

user15026
8:09 PM
@badp When it comes to standardizing belief sets, it's a really, really bad idea to do the thing for any sort of giant group.

I have the perception that the 18-yo milestone where you move out of your parents' even if you can't afford it is a very NA thing.

user15026
Especially so on like a continent level

@Arperum :D

Also very NA is the sentence "this isn't a place of haves and haves-not, this is a place of haves and soon-to-haves"

user15026
Alright, I am going to back to watching D&D YouTubery because I don't know how else to say "please don't make assumptions like this, it is a very bad idea"

8:10 PM
wilco
or rather, will try
enjoy ~

@AshleyNunn ... Not sure if you're talking about religious beliefs or my IT department belief system.

haha

user15026
@MadMAxJr I think the sentiment still holds, no? :P

I should keep my head down before the Microsoft consultant in his dark robes and his chanters come this way again.
He talks about how the Active Directory migration is upon us and how the new Active Directory will benefit us all.

@badp tryco

8:17 PM
@MadMAxJr at least he's not selling you 10 more years of 3270 terminals
FUN FACT: the simplest program in COBOL does not exist. Everything is complicated and barely working and legacy and best left untouched

So you can't do HELLO WORLD in COBOL?

I do not miss doing COBOL.

you did real cobol programming?

Q: Which platforms can the most Final Fantasy games be found?

EllesedilI'm interested in (re)playing as many of the Final Fantasy games as I possibly can, but I'm limited in the number of various platforms I have access to (what I have access to isn't important - I don't mind picking up a new console or something, but I don't want to have to buy 5 different consoles...

@Almo I'm watching people do "real" COBOL programming

8:22 PM
hehehe

I've never done COBOL.
Worst language I've ever used was BASIC... sorry, was that target too easy?
I've also done terrible Perl.
And by terrible I mean as in "the person who taught me didn't mention there was a keyword to make local variables" terrible.

There is a very complicated task before our trio of competent COBOL programmers: join up to three strings of 74 characters together.
It appears to be the hardest task in the world.

@badp ...really?

They're almost incredulous that anybody could ever have any use than strings longer than 80 characters
like, how are you going to show or print them!?

eyes modern URLs

8:33 PM
@Powerlord Well COBOL does have an unique disadvantage here: you cannot natively represent strings with trailing spaces

@badp what does the length of the strings have anything to do with how you concatenate them?

@murgatroid99 it's more of a "why would you want to do this anyway this is stupid" retort

@badp what? no trailing spaces?

@Almo yeah. A C string ends when you hit the first null byte. A Pascal string is delimited by a byte counter. A COBOL string is always padded to the compile-time declared size with spaces.
So it "ends" with the last space

ouch

8:37 PM
The COBOL string concatenation function has a required size/delimiter argument.

@badp Wouldn't it just be simpler to pad it with '\0' bytes?

@murgatroid99 Probably an EBCDIC thing.

COBOL was the first compiled language... give her a break man

@badp 0 is still NUL, even in EBCDIC

We do see null bytes, but they only come from DB queries
or the such.
I hear DB2 does not have the best reputation
That said, the terminal emulators treat space or null exactly the same way
it's just all memcpy
from what little I've seen, everything in COBOL is a glorified memcpy

8:40 PM
wouldn't surprise me given the age of the language

that said what program at the end of the day doesn't boil down to mov's.
It's just more clearly visible there.

@badp It's a little more complicated than that. There's also jmp. And arithmetic operators

:D

@badp Do they at least have a way of telling how many used characters there are?

@Powerlord no
an empty string and a string full of spaces are the exact same thing

8:42 PM
Well, I hope they at least realized that they can iterate the string backwards to find the last non-space character

it's basically null

(assuming strings in COBOL are arrays like they are in C.)

@Powerlord Probably? The bulk of the code I've seen so far is so far removed from actually doing anything. (They're "formatters", or a façade in Java terms.)

Also, why do I have the DuckTales song stuck in my head?
Also, I'm not playing Link to the Past quickly enough. I'm barely ahead of the GameGrumps episodes.

I'm pretty sure you can actually compile any possible C program into mov, jmp (plus conditional variants), call, ret, and arithmetic instructions

8:47 PM
@Powerlord oh wait. You're actually talking about the stuff WE need done? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I don't even know if they know about the STRING command. They're probably just gonna do it with glorified memcpy's.

So, seeing as how the FCC Net Neutrality rules are expected to go into effect on Friday, the Republican-controlled congress is trying to defund it.

keeps comments to himself
that wheeler guy is doing good things
really hope we don't get some repub pres in 2016, or he'll get removed for sure

@Almo It's funny considering how many people were expecting him to be a cable company shill when he was appointed.

@Yuuki he kinda was, at first

hehehe

8:58 PM
@Yuuki Well, he used to be a cable lobbyist before being appointed.

@Powerlord Not just a lobbyist but the head of the cable company lobby.

Q: Bloodborne New Game Plus difficulty jumps

ZeroI am wondering if anybody has figured out the difficulty jumps in the New Game+. Is there a certain amount of restarts/"pluses" where difficulty stops increasing? Also, If it is known, just how much do the enemy stats grow with each NG+? I feel like on NG+ (first NG+) enemies were dealing doub...

@Yuuki ...and the only person to ever be in both the Cable Television Hall of Fame and Wireless Hall of Fame.
Anyway, I'm glad that .bat file is out of my project now. Well, the bat file (and pom file that calls it) are still there, just not called from the code anywhere.
I'll probably svn delete them when our svn server is back.
Although now they've told us it'll be another week until they wipe it, so we may just use it until Tuesday morning and have Al make a new backup of it Tuesday afternoon
Hmm, I don't know how many retries GMail lets me do before it locks me out.
I can't remember which password I use for GMail. :O
(I think I know what the password is, but not which characters are shifted)

@StrixVaria <3 Try not to worry about the timeframe. The fact that you're doing it is freaking amazing
and you've come so far
HI GUYS

HELLO

HI WHAT'S UP

hello famous person

9:21 PM
@spugsley Yo.

HI HI HELLO HI HI HEY HI HELLO

@Rapitor yuuuup. Third time this thing has made the rounds. Ready for it to die, I think. Unless it's still helping people. But if it isn't, deathhhhh
@Yuuki I have so much swagger

OK, I was actually using a weaker password than I thought for GMail.
I'll have to fix this when I'm not at work

@spugsley What do you think about this?
> The adventures of Old Man Logan and Senior Citizen Steve as they battle arthritis, medication, and youngsters on their lawn.

9:23 PM
Swiggity sweg

@Yuuki omg

@spugsley Accepted as truth

Note to everyone, do not go to Reddit for the next week or so.
Or at least not /r/all.

@Yuuki why?

9:36 PM
@murgatroid99 You're not going to find anything interesting to read except for tons of /r/fatpeoplehate2 posts.

oh, I see. That will probably die down in a day or two

Everything is being drowned out by those.

Honestly, it was a pretty stupid move. I'm not surprised at all by this reaction

@murgatroid99 If they were going to remove subreddits, they needed to remove more than just five.

@Yuuki that looks like a mod. if rockstar added it the gun would probably have it's own model

9:39 PM
@Yuuki Right, and removing those when there are worse sends the wrong message

With that small number, it seems like they just wanted to shut down /r/fatpeoplehate in particular (which I agree that they should have) and looked around lazily for a few others so they could say it was a new policy.

It solidifies the common view that the reddit admins don't actually care at all about rules, they just shut down what they don't like, and ignore what they agree with

Which may or may not be what happened, but the key is that that's what it looks like.

"Come back when Coke is okay with putting ads on you."
... I should keep quiet, our IT department could hear that and get ideas for funding.

user15026
@Yuuki And thus, we come back to my statement about how doing the thing needs to be done with a giant flamethrower and then very strict controls about creation, or just not done at all and people just accepting there will be shitty people on the internet. (I am not saying that is a good or a right or a anything thing, I am just saying that this is a highly uncontrollable thing as a internet space)

9:44 PM
@Yuuki You know, the current /r/all frontpage is basically the Streisand Effect in its purest form. There are now 2 subreddits to replace FPH, and they each have more subscribers than FPH had when it was banned

user15026
@murgatroid99 Pretty much

So if we start /r/PreOrderHate and rabble-rabble about how Preordering is a bad thing, we'll get banned, then streisand the issues related to pre-ordering games and how it affects the game market?

@AshleyNunn I've said this before: it is impossible in principle to control subreddit creation. There is nothing at creation time that needs to have any relation to the actual topic of the subreddit

Something of this stuff coming up in Splatoon is pretty hilarious.
> I failed all my exams but at least I have Splatoon.

user15026
9:47 PM
@murgatroid99 Yeah, exactly.

I think the real problem is not that they banned this particular subreddit, but that they're so inconsistent in how they enforce rules like this

Oh and Halo 5 won't have local splitscreen.

@Yuuki I've seen some 'oww' moments. "My team is just like my dad. They're never there for me."

Q: Is there a glitch in Technobabylon with Giel van der Waal's hand?

AlexCSpoiler warning for Technobabylon chapter 3. Requesting if at all possible that answers and comments are as spoiler-free as possible for anywhere beyond the situation described. So I've reached chapter 3 in the new Wadjet Eye adventure Technobabylon, the scene in the apartment of Giel van der Wa...

@murgatroid99 They're not really inconsistent, they're pretty consistent in allowing almost everything unless it's becoming a PR nightmare.

9:58 PM
@MadScientist Then I guess it's more inconsistent between why they say they're doing something and why they actually do it. They said they were banning FPH for "harassing", which implies that they should ban other subreddits for that too

Harassing is a really narrow term, there's plenty of ugly stuff you can do that doesn't fit into that category

They weren't really clear about whether "harassing" and "brigading" are related or not.
I think that was a sticking point.

brigading is really a poorly defined thing, and banning people/subs for it is pretty problematic.

@MadScientist The rule is that it's bad and gets you banned, unless you're /r/bestof

@Yuuki The whole Miiverse has stuff like this and it's amazing

10:04 PM
:(
Chris Avellone left Obsidian.

Maybe ineXile will nab him.
Er, whatever the name of the guys are behind Wasteland 2 / Bards Tale 4

And MGS V has microtransactions.

Oh no. We've gone from Nanomachines to Rules of Nature to Microtransactions. D:
Maybe. NANOTRANSACTIONS.

WAR HAS CHANGED.

Q: In S.T.A.L.K.E.R. COP, non-player characters don't attack zombies, is this a known bug?

userI'm running the latest (Steam) version of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call of Pripyat on Windows 7 (32 bit). I've succesfully verified my local files in my Steam Library. If I remember correctly, on my last playthrough I didn't get this error. I'm on the Jupiter map.

10:07 PM
@Yuuki This sounds... untrue. One of Halos main things was 4 player split. I can understand downgrading to 2 player split. but not having any split is pretty unpossible.

"As a part of the improved gameplay mechanics, the player has to pay a small fee for Snake's ongoing medical care."

@Rapitor There will be online co-op, but not splitscreen.

So stop sharing consoles and make your friends buy their own along with a copy of Halo 5. :(

@Yuuki That doesn't mean that it won't have splitscreen multiplayer

@Yuuki That's really unfortunate, but I can't say I'm surprised. Local split-screen co-op in AAA games has been dying for a while

10:12 PM
ok I get it. no split screen campaign, but there is still split screen
that's fine

Oh, if it's still gonna have local multiplayer just not campaign that's different, but still kind of annoying

eh. i was never really big on co op campaigns anyway. those have always been solo-only in my eyes

It's Master Chief v. The Universe, like God intended.

My guess is it probably won't have couch multiplayer either. But that is mostly a hunch at this point

@Yuuki I just want to play as the Arbiter again because he is really cool

10:21 PM
@twobugs And his OP natural invisibility.
Although that was Halo 2 only.

@Rapitor don't care about Halo, but co-op campaigns are often a huge plus for me

Q: Is there a way to bind TAB to an action?

oscilatingcretinI have been using TAB for walking backward in FPS games since the mid-90's. I have never come across a game that will not let me bind to TAB except for Bioshock Infinite and Ziggurat. Is there a way to bind a command to that key?

@badp why is it so pink?

@GodEmperorDune windows93.net

10:42 PM
@badp SOLITUDE
@badp Select Yeah from menu

@twobugs arbiter is apparently in 5... if the master collection's cutscenes are any proof anyway

@Rapitor Yeah, I liked those parts. I just think he's a really cool and compelling character.

@badp I got to 19 nested instances of "Virtual PC"

@twobugs I love the covenant in general, I always played as them in 2 and 3 multi. and used covenant weapons in 4.

Oh dear, Reddit.

user15026
.One commenter pointed out another potentially offensive subreddit that wasn't banned and Pao responded, “We're banning behavior, not ideas. While we don't agree with the content of the subreddit, we don't have reports of it harassing individuals.” Ohanian also denied that this new move was about making reddit more palatable for advertisers, writing “Steve and I did not create reddit to be a platform for communities to target + harass individuals. It's really that simple.”

:22127803 And so the question shall remain unsettled.

@Yuuki noooooooo~!
cache win

I will never understand the "Batman wins" side of the Batman v. Superman argument.

@AshleyNunn whats the offensive subredit? racism? nazis? trolls?

user15026
11:47 PM
@Memor-X They banned 5 - the only one that got actively named was fatpeoplehate

@Yuuki everyone, including Superman, has weaknesses. Batman is so smart and whatnot, he will exploit those weaknesses

@Chippies Everyone, including Batman, has weaknesses. Batman's chief weakness being that he is a fragile human meatsack.

@Yuuki did I forget to mention confirmation bias? Yeah, that's probably the main reason why "Batman would win against Superman"
because Batman is just so much cooler and more relatable

Even with every advantage at his disposal (Superman unwilling to fight, Kryptonite, giant mech suit, Superman having just tanked a nuke to the face), Superman still would have canonically beaten Batman in the comic everyone references.
Superman just stops fighting because he detects that Batman is about to have a heart attack.

@Yuuki well, I don't know that much about Superman (or Batman), but I have seen Superman pretty much turning into a dying human in the presence of kryptonite
I used to watch that silly TV show about Superman

11:50 PM
@Chippies The comic that most people reference about Batman beating Superman is The Dark Knight Returns.
And I guess he technically "won", in that Superman decided maybe beating the s--- out of his former friend who's about to have a heart attack was probably not a Nice Thing (tm).
