I really love the Lord of the Rings world, but I can't stand Tolkeins writing (I find it really dry and boring), so instead I just read the LOTR wiki.

I want the 4th book in that series to come out already (and then the 5th approximately when I finish the 4th book, etc)

I only read the first book, and the characters and plot were both really lacking.

@StrixVaria seems to be, ("The Painted Man (titled The Warded Man in the US)")

I kind of expect them both to improve in the next books, both because the author has more experience and he's done with his exposition and can get to the real story, but the first book left a bad taste in my mouth.

@StrixVaria Yeah, I don't like that. If an author wants to do a bunch of world building I'd prefer they finish the main storyline and then write new books afterwards as opposed to dragging out the storyline just for world building.

@Wipqozn I'm all for having a deep world that's explored during the plot of a book. But that's how it should be done; the plot should drive and the world should be emergent, and not the other way around.

I love deep worlds, but if the characters and plot aren't good then I'm not going to be able to read or enjoy the books.

@StrixVaria I dunno if there were that many. It got better as time went on and fleshed out the world, but it's not like all they did was flesh out the world.

@Frank I was exaggerating a bit, but the point is that he has constant extremely long expository chapters where little or nothing happens. Maybe it does get better later. I couldn't stomach to read another page after 4.5 books of that.

That's why I didn't like a A Feast for Crows. A lot of that was world building, and I just didn't care about most of the POV characters in that book. The Iron Borne had a lot of focus in that, but the Iron Borne are just boring.

@Wipqozn This is where I stopped reading that series.

@StrixVaria I had to struggle to get through the fourth book. The fifth was a lot better, but not as good as the first three were.

I don't consider Dresden books in my top tier of books. I usually use them as quick diversions between other books.

Spekaing of Mistborn, I'm loving Mistborn so far.

Sanderson does such a good job of world building.

Although I'm pretty sure I saw a major spoiler for book 1 when I was trying to change the edition of book 2 when I was adding it to my to read list.

Speaking of Mistborn, I need to read Alloy of Law at some point.

@Sconibulus From what I hear, he has 4 trilogies planned in the setting. Allow of Law and the like are "western", then another trilogy in the modern era, and another that's almost sci-fi. I am skeptical, but I will give him the benefit of the doubt for now.

Also, Inquisitors are creepy as fuck.

I hate when I get sleepy on the train because that cuts into my reading time. I just want to finish books so I can read more books.

Jeah, with moving my train ride is shortened to like 10 minutes or so. Upside: Less time in commuting so home sooner, downside: less time to read books in the train :(

@Wipqozn I keep forgetting this whenever I get stuck reading a bad book. I'll start dreading reading that book, which I then mistake dreading reading at all, and then I don't read anything for months. It happens to me again and again even though I know it happens.

@StrixVaria I've had this happen before when I feel obligated to finish one book before moving onto another, provided the book I'm reading I can't stand. Lord of the Rings is a good example.

Update 39 added perk decks that require perk points to unlock. But I don't know how to acquire these points, as it's not explained in the update log and I kind of skipped past the tutorial prompt. How do I get perk points to spend?
