user15026
@QAtash grins I used to draw eyes on everything because they were the only thing I could make that weren't stick people. Mind you I did make a series of comics about a stick man who basically just did normal people stuff but got injured in creative ways doing it.

Never had the attention span to make a comic... or even finish a drawing

Q: Will mobs spawn from dark ceilings?

AlourraI'm trying to cut back on having so many torches but it leaves my ceilings rather dark, light level 7 to be exact. As long as the ground is well lit, will that be enough to prevent monsters from spawning?

This is true. I was pretty ridiculous as a teen. I thought wearing my pjs that had bears printed all over them to school set me apart as a fashion rebel. Mostly made me look ridiculous.

This is a very valid point. I mean I have purple-blue hair, and rock MLP/gamer shirts and sing Disney songs everywhere and have an adipose from Doctor Who that often rides along poking out of my purse.

I'm off tomorrow, so I get to be extra lazy :)

the other half is lack of education

and computer users or gamers are not the breed of people who read the rules FIRST

@pixel Really? I did.

I read the FAQ for the badge, I found out about badges on like day 3 or 4

I don't want to chase new users who are doing it wrong away. But I also don't want to let them do it wrong simply so they'll stay

I'd already had a misunderstanding with an established member of the community

2:17 PM
I do hate seeing things like "Wow, this question is stupid!" in comments though
2

In fact, I had already done most of the things that people complain about with new users
@Sterno that I agree with

Yes, most users and gamers will just jump in. If they get it wrong, they'll figure out what they did wrong, and try again. The vast majority of new users try once, get it wrong, and leave.

Really, I think the fact that we are strict on what kinds of questions we allow isn't so bad. It's our attitude when communicating why it's being closed that needs work.
3

And therefore you have to ask, did they leave because they got it wrong or because they hit a brick wall of abuse from the community when they did?

@fbueckert thing is, most of what he says could be deemed as truth if it was correctly worded
it doesn't "directly" answer the question though, and that makes it a point of view thing rather than being technically correct/incorrect
from his point of view he could be assuming that people know there isn't a loot table in diablo 3
I have done exactly the same myself, and been pulled up on it

@fbueckert gameaddict demonstrated frequently that he was uninterested in the way the community wants arqade to work, and that in addition to this he cared so little that he would repeatedly ignore the rules, challenge moderators, etc
@fbueckert the other guy is a new user who probably jumped into answering a question making an assumption of basic knowledge, while the community expects that such background information is clarified in the answer

@fbueckert YES! this 1000x

@pixel Actually, it got closed, re-opened, then closed again.

I know, I don't think it should have been closed
but that's not the argument

2:37 PM
@pixel The original question was a rant about equating upping sensitivity to cheating.

this is a 1 year old user that suffers all the issues that people pick up in rep=1 users as problem
the problem isn't limited to new users
it's a community education thing
however my point in linking that question - look at the comments, they're not friendly or acceptable comments even if they're correct
basically what I get from that question is
'ranty questions are off topic and should be killed, ranty and abusive comments are welcome here'

From the question, I interpret a single comment as hostile, and that's @tiddy 's comment. (Sorry!)
The user was probably in a bad mood from getting killed by someone who had upped their sensitivity.

Well I admit it had a touch of hostility. And in full disclosure it was referring to the unedited initial post

@tiddy Which was quite ranty, I agree.

two wrongs don't make a right though, lead by example, all that jazz

2:41 PM
It was closed

the question being closed doesn't make a comment in the same style acceptable though
and any new user will see that and think its normal
which will then just further contribute to the problems that people have with new users

He was a 396 user

@pixel Ok...so a single comment that could be interpreted as hostile, alongside several that point out he didn't want an answer, as he had already posted it.

Treat people how you expect to be treated in return, even if that isn't how you're always treated!

And then we get this:
@Jason Berkan This is a case of straw that broke the camels back, in general I have found the community here to be very unwelcoming compared to other SE communities and the restrictions on question types seem to restrict them purely to things I could answer with a google/wiki/GameFAQs.com search instead. I have cancelled all my tag subscriptions to the site and will instead participate in other Q&A communities where I actually feel welcome — RobV 17 hours ago
This is his first closed question (unless there were some that got deleted).

2:43 PM

@fbueckert There aren't

because you don't 'straw that broke the camels back' over one question
not unless you're overly dramatical

@pixel I looked at his other questions. They're all still open, which means he's contributed to the site.

I still think his question was ridiculous
And I'd say it again

If his response to his first closed question is, "You guys suck! I hate you!", even when it was a rant, then he needs to learn something about taking criticism.
And even now, we're still debating on how we could salvage it!

2:46 PM
I'm not debating. I don't care.

He's right about the scope of Arqade limiting to questions that could be answered by googling though

@fbueckert automatically assuming that it is something that can't be answered is the wrong way to go about things

@fbueckert it's just as bad as most of the community believing when I make a 'can you merge these tags' question on meta that I want synonyms creating
@fbueckert and again, I agree that there will be a few/lot/majority where they will be unanswerable, but then surely we should at least be trying to point them in the right direction?
