3:00 PM
@fbueckert actually in this instance I'm debating his question is on topic, gaming related, within a defined scope, clearly answerable and has a definitive answer, not asking for an opinion
sure its worded pretty bad both in it's original form and its edit, but I really don't see what the problem is

@pixel Key word in there was "were". :P

for most other gaming related "why are things like this" can be bounced over to game dev and the rest can go to wikipedia, doesn't really need debating

@Grace had suggested editing the question to be more in-scope. I don't believe anyone else actually done those edits.

yes but since the guy probably isn't coming back, it's already a failure
there were like 8 comments, any of those 4+ people could have fixed the post
instead they chose to do the other thing

@pixel What post are we talking about?

3:03 PM
the console controller sensitivity post
but its merely an example of the larger point

@pixel Problem is, we shouldn't be changing the intent of the question, unless it's been abandoned by it's owner.
Which is what we would be doing (and did), and why we were pointing out what was wrong with it.

@fbueckert sure, can agree with that, I just wish people in the community would put the same effort into answering questions and being positive as they put into finding reasons why not to answer questions/being arses to randoms

Hi @QAzer did you hear the news?

His original question as it written was extremely poor and lacked evidence proving any critical thinking was taking place

@pixel The community put a LOT of effort into trying to get him to understand his question was bad and needed changing.

3:05 PM
@RonanForman Not at all. Too busy this week :'<

@QAzer We decided to use your logo! It's great.

@tiddy the comments to the question were lacked by established members of the community who knew better and yet still made in some cases equally as bad comments
but the fact they knew better makes it far worse

Do you have a vector file of it I can use?

@fbueckert some comments isn't 'a lot of effort', more 'effort' was put into the instances with gameaddict

We put effort into answering questions, but we shouldn't be answering questions that are off-topic, which is what it originally was.

3:07 PM
@fbueckert and gameaddict was a brand new user rather than somebody who had demonstrated they would contribute to the site AND keep returning over a year period

@RonanForman Yayness~ Let me know if you need me to make any changes, or the original .ai file.

@pixel So you're saying we should treat long time users differently than new users?

@QAzer The .ai file would be nice.
So I can make it larger and stuff.

@fbueckert nope, I'm saying everybody should be perfectly equal, including established members in the community
@fbueckert if dishing out abuse as a 1rep user is frowned upon it should be frowned upon just as much if not more by anybody with higher rep
@fbueckert if bad questions are given by a new user they should be mentored rather than rejected

@pixel And quite often, that's exactly what we do.

3:09 PM
@fbueckert well some people must have had bad weeks then

Problem is, most often users see the mentoring as, "No! You're wrong! Change it!"

@RonanForman alright. I'll add it to my answer in the meta this afternoon, when I switch back to my mac.

And they throw a fit and leave.

@fbueckert and that ties in perfectly with "most people take constructive criticism as personal attacks"
@fbueckert I agree with you completely, but in some instances it's probably just bad wording

And unfortunately, we each only have so much energy to devote to mentoring new users.

3:10 PM
I have 0

@pixel And in those cases, we still try to salvage it.

@tiddy @fbueckert I am sure I don't need to remind you, but without users this is just a bunch of text on a webserver somewhere that has no use, point, or value

I think we should provide more resources for users who want to contribute, but I'm not participating in any back and forths

@pixel If a user takes constructive criticism as a personal attack and leaves, I'm alright with that.
This is the Internet. Grow thicker skin.

@fbueckert if a user takes badly worded criticism as an attack and leaves, that is a problem

3:12 PM
And this site is a convenience already. It's not necessary

@fbueckert if a user like some of the ones we had last week misunderstands well worded constructive criticism, I will agree with you 110% at all times

@pixel We had a single comment that could be construed as hostile.
I think badly worded criticism is much less common than you think.

@fbueckert potentially 3 or 4 people in 2 weeks, of which I know 1 of them started off as user being stubborn before escalating
@fbueckert that's enough people to question, I'm not pointing fingers at all
plus I'm really bored of work and typing away makes me look busy

@pixel I don't mind debating; I know I can certainly improve on providing better feedback.
But at the same time, we're looking at it from our side of the coin.
We have certain standards, and we expect new users to conform to those standards.
The fact that these standards are much higher than GameFAQs or reddit or whatever is a good thing.
6
It means our quality of users that stick around and contribute is better than sites that have no standards.

@fbueckert I do not disagree with this at all

3:18 PM
And while we try to educate new users, 99% of them assume this is a GameFAQs clone, and can post whatever they want.

@fbueckert if you allow anybody to post, then allow them the opportunity to make mistakes on at least one occasion but probably a few more than that

I left a comment on that post which sounded more hostile than it was meant to be, given all the surrounding comments.
I was basically trying to ask him what he was actually asking

Not everybody in the world is a lost cause, just because they don't past your test first time doesn't mean they're unable to pass it

@pixel What do you mean "allow mistakes"?

@pixel And we do exactly that. Their first chances tend to get deleted.

3:20 PM
@Wipqozn I mean it is unrealistic for a first time, or second, maybe even third time user, to be expected to be fully aware of the way this site works, the full contents of the FAQ, etc
I have been here more than a month and I still work out something new about arqade on a daily basis

@pixel Yes, of course. But what do you mean by "allow mistakes"? Are you suggesting we don't close their questions? put more effort into helping them salvage their questions? et cetera.

I'm suggesting more effort into helping them before going down the close route

@pixel Yes, but you didn't take offense as soon as someone pointed out what was wrong about what you were doing, did you?

@fbueckert yes I raged at LessPop for about 45 minutes in comments
over a point I had completely missed
typical new user

And the largest difference is that you put effort into understanding how the site works, rather than going, "They closed my question! I hate them!"

3:22 PM
@pixel Closing is a temporary state. The point of closing questions quickly is to prevent users from posting answers to a question that needs to be fixed.

actually I realised I'd made myself look stupid, removed all of my comments, came on chat, apologised, etc

@pixel CLOSE FIRST UGOAIWJEFOIAEJWFLKAJ
5

@pixel And did you take it personally?

@fbueckert yes for about 0.0001 second, but then I got distracted by a passing bee
sandwasp*

@StrixVaria This was pretty much my reaction, and why I'm starring this :P

3:24 PM
@Wipqozn @StrixVaria my problem with that, is "close" is a very blunt word
and a new user seeing their question closed 15 minutes after they opened it with a comment saying "this is not useful on this site bla bla bla"

I think we could use some slight improvement in helping new users, but new users also need to understand that they're joining an established community that has rules.

Will probably CBA and never come back
OR bitch and whine

@pixel Which is why we should make it more clear to new users that closing is a temporary state, and that their question can be re-opened if fixed.
But it doesn't mean we should just not close questions.

Not following those rules results in penalties, such as closure and/or deletion.

@pixel We can probably get better at providing helpful comments, but we shouldn't eschew policies to make people feel better either.

3:25 PM
@Wipqozn no of course not, closing is a valid tool to use, I'm just suggesting we shouldn't close first and ask questions later

If a user can't put effort into understanding us when we try to help them, why should we keep those users?

@pixel That's exactly what we should do. That's the purpose of closing.

@fbueckert because misunderstandings happen, and every single person here would never have got anywhere in life if they hadn't had a misunderstanding forgiven against them at some point

@StrixVaria I agree with this 110%, and is basically what I'm getting at as well.

I think I can sum up this entire conversation as "Let's keep our rules, but not be dicks."
9

3:27 PM
@Sterno You're a poet.

@Sterno you know that is so elegantly put

National merit scholar!

@pixel And we do exactly that. The problem is, the new users don't forgive us.

I think the important thing to bare in mind, everybody in this channel is going to be technically minded or be frequently surrounded by people with such a mindset
It does effect the way we communicate

@pixel Side effect of the SE network.

3:29 PM
I will say I'm not in the business of mentoring children

@fbueckert Maybe, not everybody here is going to be like that, I said here as in = The Bridge

@tiddy Good thing this isn't business!

Not all new users will be of that mindset, those that are will check the FAQ and do a search before asking a question

@pixel SE started with StackOverflow, and that's how I found the network.

@fbueckert I knew of stack overflow and never signed up

3:31 PM
@Sterno Try telling that to some users

It's only recently that the network has branched out into non-technical aspects.

@fbueckert I got here by seeing something on google

@tiddy If you don't want to take the time to write constructive criticism to help a new user, don't comment at all.
10

@fbueckert but you obviously understand what I mean

@Wipqozn Eh, depends on my mood

3:31 PM
Network of technical people answering questions of those who are not always technical people
Remember that they're not technical, it's probably where a decent portion of the problem occurs

@tiddy Yes, if your mood is to offer nonconstructive criticism then just leave the question for someone else to deal with.

@Wipqozn I'll be honest, I try. But sometimes I don't get my coffee till 10 and all bets are off

There are plenty of times I just wanted to post remarks such as "Words cannot describe how stupid this answer is" but I don't. I either leave a constructive remark, ro don't bother posting at all.

@Wipqozn And then ill stub my TOE. I'd hate to be the user who posts a bad question about skyrim then

@tiddy Yeah, I'm not expecting anyone to be perfect, we all make mistakes.

3:33 PM
as somebody who spends a lot of time on IRC purely to laugh at the expense of others, I would love to post such comments against some of the people here but never have

You should

It's not the right place to do so

It's literally a giant forum filled with 13-40 year old men and women across the globe
Perfect place to do it ;)

@tiddy and tortoises.

Not really, outside of chat the rest of the site(s) have a degree of seriousness about them

3:35 PM
waits for @OrigamiRobot to reply

Still not sure I understand the whole tortoise mascot thing

@tiddy My Little Pony.

Seriousness on gaming websites is boring

Seriousness is probably not the word I was after, go with professionalism
its home time anyway bbs

3:47 PM
@RonanForman I've added a link to the .ai file and the fonts I used to here. Let me know if you need anything else.

@QAzer Cool.

FAE
@Wipqozn ...yeesh

@FAE Does it make me a terrible person that I laughed audible at that?
The correct answer is yes.

So, minding the Binding of Isaac super-massive mega-spoilers behind the jump, is this correct?

4:00 PM
hm it appears it's not
@QAzer how about this then? (Blue == DLC only)

FAE
@Strix No and yes, but my experience is from the beta and I'm not entirely sure if it's still relevant re: point #1. I know for sure that the answer is yes to your second question.

@QAdp ZOMG SPOILERS

> minding the Binding of Isaac super-massive mega-spoilers

I know
I don't even care about that game

boo

4:04 PM
@QAdp I thought there were 11 endings + the epilogue, and 13 with wrath of the lamb dlc. As of the christmas update at least.

I am currently as a matter of fact, reducing my list of currently played games down to games I can specifically complete in a single day
no MMOs, no lengthy RPGs, etc

whoa, what's that over there! ?

@Wipqozn probably something tortoise related

@pixel Nope, I think it's a polar bear. You should probably look.

not a fan of bears

4:05 PM
@pixel Funny. I'm finally considering adding an MMO.

@StrixVaria hold off for Guild Wars 2.

@StrixVaria I will after I finish my game detox, I have more games than I have time for atm so I'm trying to systematically complete all of the short ones so I can set fire to them

@Wipqozn I fully plan to read up on Guild Wars 2 before committing to TSW.

Instead of picking up... I don't know, Hello Kitty Online Island Adventure? I'm not sure what games you kids play.

The skill system in GW2 doesn't sound all that compelling, though.
I need to watch some gameplay demonstrations before I make a final decision.

4:06 PM
@Wipqozn major time sink atm is still WoW
I believe I have resolved that issue though

@StrixVaria gOOD PLAN.
ALSO, I HAD THE CAPS LOCK KEY ON WHEN I TYPED THAT, AND ALSO THIS. MY BAD.

World of "OMG when did I become a teenager? WHEN DID I FINISH SCHOOL? WHO ARE YOU PEOPLE"-craft

@QAdp Endings 1-10, Sheol End, WotL End (Bible End), and "The Polaroid" End (added in 1.3 I think).

You know who I haven't seen in a looong time? Macha.

@GnomeSlicE I'm going on a trip to nowhere tonight, hopefully I'll have time finally upload your coin

4:12 PM
I'm about to go on a trip to nowhere, I'm sure you mean something completely different though

@pixel I'm actually going to be passing a place that's in the middle of nowhere, and maybe dodge a few tornadoes or two

@QAzer that would probably be even cooler while doing what I'm doing right now
dodging tornados that is
while high

So i got Thissss -=><=- close to buying The Secret World last night :)

Also, I should rewatch .hack//SIGN sometime. It's such a good anime.

FAE
@Wipqozn I've tried to watch that 2 or 3 times so far and stopped like half a dozen eps in each time

4:16 PM
Your argument is based purely on speculation. If Disintegrate does indeed show larger numbers (something I'm not entirely convinced of yet), it's more likely due to something completely different. I could for example speculate that maybe Disintegrate can hit large enemies twice on it's way through similar to how Elemental Arrow used to work. — MatsT 57 mins ago
he created an account just to comment at me
how cute

New user

@FAE Nothing really makes sense until you get to the end, and then play the game.

"not quite"
associated user

FAE
@QAzer There's a ton of games...

@QAzer I never played the games myself, just read up on all of them on the wikis after finishing with the animes.

4:17 PM
@pixel tell me more

dodging tornados while high could be cool

@Wipqozn I would call that blasphemy if they didn't break what could have been 1 or two games into four and three, respectively.

@QAzer Yup. That's why I've never bothered with them.

@Wipqozn Have you seen the .hack//G.U. - Trilogy OVA?

@pixel Developed by different companies?

4:23 PM
@YiJiang yes
@YiJiang during the Diablo 1 development the company was called Condor, it was bought by Blizzard and renamed Blizzard North
@YiJiang Blizzard North also made Diablo 2, but Diablo 3 was made by Blizzard

Oh, interesting

@QAzer Yup.

Blizzard North split and makes Guild Wars and Fate now from what I recall

I've watched all the animes, I just haven't played the games.

Or atleast 'Key People' from the teams.

4:24 PM
part of Blizzard North was responsible for Torchlight as well iirc

@pixel he's been around for 39 days... hardly "just to comment on your post". :)

Interesting thing though is Vivendi is selling off Actard

@AnnaLear initial impressions, all those misconceptions ;p

And if they can not find someone willing to pay the whole sum for them, they will be selling it off to the public via stock

@pixel What?

4:25 PM
Blizzard need to be turned back into the story driven friendly company they were
@RonanForman me jumping to conclusions

Q: Just how experimentation-friendly is the skill system in The Secret World?

StrixVariaI am seriously considering getting The Secret World, but I want clarification on some of the implications of some skill mechanics before making my decision. Is it possible to 'respec'? Essentially, if I start going down the pistol tree and don't like it, can I move my spent points over to the s...

1
Q: How many character slots do you get?

StrixVariaBy default, how many character slots do you get in The Secret World with the various purchasing options? One option has "+1 character slot" as a perk, which made me wonder about the default case.

I have pretty much written off Blizzard at this point in time after SC2 and D3 releases. I will see what Titan is but I do not hold out much hope. A RL Auction House will make it an off limits thing to me

@pixel Didn't many former Blizzard North fellows quit enmasse over a dispute over company teams and development with Venendi and Form Flagship Studios?

@James Activision seems to be meddling in it. NOT a fan of Kotick at all.

4:29 PM

@QAzer yes

$20 each. I hate how overpriced stuff like that is.

@Lazers Not sure why he didn't opt to make two questions there

Every time I think about buying something, I look at the price tag, and change my mind.

hellgate london was such a rushed game as well

4:30 PM
It would have more searchable title at least

@fbueckert Kotick is a puppet from after the buyout by vivendi man.. He does not do much anymore.

@Wipqozn I think it's about 1.7x the amount it's worth, and that's all their things.

that was random level generation without enough level parts to make the random generation work without being super repetitive

Kotick has kept Activision/Blizzard pretty healthy

Do not get me wrong, He is an asshole.. no doubt there, but I do not think he has the power to do anything any more from what I recall of the buyout.

4:30 PM
@James ...Didn't Vivendi buy Blizzard, and then Activision buy Blizzard/Vivendi?

I'm pretty sure the concept was solid though in terms of what they were trying with Hellgate

@YiJiang I believe due to his last line
> Any other relevant information on the spending and flexibility of the skill system would also be useful.

@Wipqozn People will pay for it.

Vivendi has owned blizzard for a long while, They just bought out Activision and then changed their name because Vivendi is know for being assholes :)

@Wipqozn the CGI movie too? (Towards the Other Side of the World)

4:31 PM
Blizzard's ownership clause though always has a hands off policy and has since they were juggled around.

vivendi bought Blizzard and Activision when merged them into Activision Blizzard iirc

@GnomeSlicE Oh, I'm well aware of why it's overpriced.
@QAzer I don't think so.

Their owning publishers are not really allowed to do Anything

but their hands off policy didn't work

@James Not really allowed, but I sincerely doubt they didn't go, "Hey, why don't you add an RMAH into D3?"

4:32 PM
@Wipqozn I have the sword and it has no where near the durability of an iron sword. :p

@fbueckert At the very least there was a "so how would you optimise this for maximum profit" conversation

@pixel And I'll bet almost anything Kotick was in that conversation.

@fbueckert it was probably Kotick hosting that conversation

@QAzer I'm assuming it's just cheap cardboard?

@Wipqozn I believe it's foam.

4:36 PM
@RonanForman That's what SHE said!

@StrixVaria 3 character slots, 3 factions is apparently the justification

@pixel I'm still going to pick up Heart of the Swarm, unless Blizzard breaks their promise and prices it at a full game price.

@Wipqozn In what context?

@Wipqozn /facepalm

@RonanForman All of them.

4:36 PM
@fbueckert don't hold your breath they won't
@fbueckert I am buying MoP with the money I've made from RMAH

@pixel I got out of WoW years ago, and NOTHING will make me come back.

@pixel MoP = My Other Pony?

@Wipqozn lol

@fbueckert What if they gave you candy?

@fbueckert I have a lot of friends that are too stubborn to find another game
@fbueckert I am pretty much out though

4:37 PM
Yeah Vivendi owned Blizzard since 1998 and the Activision merger didnt happen until 2008. So Blizzard was there for 10 years before they merged with Activision
I am not going insane :D

Kotick wishes he could pull off a good MMO
He probably dreams about it

And Y'All wish me luck I hope! Interview with Double Helix games on Monday.. Hopefully time to move back into video game development.. Business software is just not for me

:P gl

@pixel Haha, Thanks I think :)

@Wipqozn Nope. I'm out. WoW is NEVER getting me back.

4:39 PM
whoa, look, a distraction!

WoW is an actual money printing machine though

tortoise swoosh

Gave them my resume on the 3rd, they called for an interview on the 5th I think that is a pretty good sign :)
@Wipqozn Image me man! I get the text too much the image is fading! :(

@Wipqozn it's decent quality foam

4:44 PM
Oh man the answers to these questions about TSW are the ones that would make me fall off the fence on the side of getting it.
Time to seriously take a look at Guild Wars 2 tonight and make a decision.

@agent86 LoL My brother just sent me that and I just forwarded it to another friend :D

@StrixVaria I had an absolute blast last night.

FAE
@StrixVaria You can play both!

so I understand that in this game, to join one of the factions, they give you a particular sexual favor?

FAE
@agent86 Dragon intro.

4:47 PM
@FAE :O Why'd I choose Illuminati again?

@FAE okay, so it's not just people trolling. that's... interesting.

They just pumped me full of LSD.

@LessPop_MoreFizz yeah, the dragons apparently have a different kind of pumping in mind...

FAE
Wasn't particularly impressed with that one. The other 2, you initially get a choice of things at least. Dragon intro, they knock you unconscious, kidnap you, then... yeah.
It felt really... sketchy.

@FAE I wouldn't say the Illuminati really give you a choice.
Guy shows up and says "You have an appointment in Brooklyn. If you don't find it, someone will show up to kill you."
And when you find it, they knock you out and pump you full of drugs.

4:49 PM
@FAE video game forced sexual experience feels sketchy? final answer there, regis?
:P

The Dragon intro is WEIRD, no argument there.

@LessPopMoreFizz Any of those packages worth it?
@Shinrai They are described as targeted chaos, how could their intro not be weird? :)

@James I didn't bother.

@James Yeah, no argument. I find a secret society where the only way to identify the other members being their herpes is a bit odd, though :3

@Shinrai LOL Awesome :)

4:54 PM
And I'd agree with @LessPopMoreFizz on the packages. Doing fine without any of it.

The biggest problem I have with the game is I can not buy it over a secure connection. I have to enter all my information over a normal HTTP request :/
@Shinrai But .. little birdy!!! haha, I am a sucker for things like that so I think I will get atleast that one.

You can always get keys from other sources if it bothers you. Pricing shouldn't be dramatically different

@James Paypal
Don't give them money directly
it's what I did. And then... they... um... forgot to charge me.

@LessPop_MoreFizz Just found that Amazon has a digital download for the game :)
... Seriously!?

FAE
@LessPop_MoreFizz I've had a couple friends try to get it through paypal and they had some problems with their banks declining and stuff. :( Took one of them like a week and a half to get a purchase finally worked out.

Q: Multiple missiles not being saved to a custom loadout

kotekzotI used to play most of my games with Heat Seekers, Multiple Missiles and Unguided Bombs. After the update, however, some of the planes I had such a custom loadout for lost MMs, only having HSM and UG. Saving a custom loadout with MMs and UGs for this plane only gives UGs, not MMs. I suspect it is...

Q: Which Hero Types can learn which abilities?

Ebon DreamerEndless Space has 5 hero types: Pilot, Commander, Corporate, Industry, and Adventurer. Which hero abilities are exclusive to which types? Is there a graphic somewhere of the full ability dependency chart? (That is to say, a graph denoting which abilities are unlocked by which prerequisites?)

@LessPopMoreFizz @FAE @Shinrai Snagged it via Amazon Download. I feel a bit safer (identity theft sucks I do not want to go through it again just for the paper work you have to go through for years afterwards proving you are you)

@Lazers Ooh! A question I can probably answer!

@James Yeah, no worries there. Doesn't matter where you get it at all, really. (I've even heard of people in the EU buying it off Origin because it's significantly cheaper but then never installing Origin...works fine with the Funcom installer, lol)
