@tiddy My word. It's only $2 for a game where I live, and that includes the shoes.

Well, yeah, because of the conditions there, your feet evolved high amounts of fur so that you don't regularly need shoes, so the concept of paying for shoes is like, buying bottled water.

@GraceNote I still don't understand why people buy bottled water.

@StrixVaria convenience?

@StrixVaria Because it's more "pure"

@murgatroid99 For home use? It's definitely more convenient to just use the tap than to lug around 30 lbs of water.
@fbueckert A myth invented to justify the existence of a product we don't need!
Well, it probably is more "pure", but that doesn't mean anything really.

8:08 PM
Bottled water in the home is debatable, but having portable clean water shouldn't require too much mental gymnastics to understand

@StrixVaria Besides what murgatroid and fbueckert said (which are both accurate, people are too lazy to draw up water themselves when they need it for travel and such, and people do fall prey to purity arguments), it's also because people buy anything with a price tag.

@StrixVaria I was actually recently happy that we had bottled water at my house. A water main in the county broke and all of the tap water was contaminated. It turned out that our town wasn't affected, but we didn't know that at first

@GraceNote For example: TF2 Hats.

@tiddy At the same time, if you need portability (and don't have issues with contaminated supplies), you'd only need to buy once, using that purchase to buy the bottles, and then just reuse those.

@tiddy I really don't like the tone you tend to take with me most of the time. Please chill out.
@murgatroid99 Monmouth?

8:09 PM
@StrixVaria yep

there's a penn & teller thing from their showtime show they did on bottled water that was pretty informative/funny

Hey look at that, we're in the same county.
My water is also unaffected, though.
Lucky us.
@agent86 I should watch this.

@StrixVaria I think I saw in on youtube at one point, let me see if I can dig it out.

@StrixVaria Don't take it personally I wasn't talking directly to you

If Link can reuse 4 bottles to sustain him for an entire adventure, a box of 24 bottles should be enough to last a lifetime.

8:11 PM
@StrixVaria it was crazy because we heard about it as we were driving home from vacation, so we were boiling water before we knew we didn't have to

@GraceNote And he doesn't just store liquids, either!

Anyway in my experience I usually find bottled water in large supplies at tailgates, cookouts, and ocean/lake days

NSFW language in there (they curse a lot)

I'd like to tap the collective technical knowledge of the room for a couple minutes, if I may.

@agent86 I will check this out when I get home tonight.

8:12 PM
@fbueckert NO YOU MAY NOT. next?

@agent86 Pfft. Meanie.

@StrixVaria I think this ep. also talks about feng shui

I'm attempting to access computer resources through a VPN.

@fbueckert Shoot

@fbueckert seriously though, please state the nature of your technical emergency.

8:13 PM
@agent86 I like Penn & Teller stuff in general, so I'm sure I'll be entertained no matter what it's about.

@StrixVaria you should watch as much of the series as you can then, it's quite good.

On my Windows 7 machine, VPN connects, resolves, everything works fine.
I try it on an XP machine, and I can connect to the VPN just fine.
Problem is, it can't access any of the network resources. It doesn't even know they're there.
It's like it resolves itself into a black hole.

I'd like to tap the collective technical knowledge of the room for a couple minutes, if I may.

ugh, VPN issues. I'm terrible at that sort of thing. I tend to just tunnel out of the private network when I start to have issues, which would probably give IT a heart attack if they found out

8:16 PM
It's not life threatening or critical; I ran it past our IT guy, and he's got nothing.

I shared with you my knowledge of a site that will help you solve your problem!

@StrixVaria you should quote the relevant information behind the link, so as to avoid link rot :P

If we come up blank, I'll happily sum it up there.

anyone else here use tunnelr?

@tiddy can't say I'm familiar with this software. I use Bitvise Tunnelier from time to time on windows, and autossh on linux

8:18 PM
I've been using it for a few months now
Enjoy it, a few stall out's at work, but I'm chalking that up to our massive network
No issues at home

Q: ME3: Why did Henry Lawson decide to have a daughter?

Martin MarinoDoes anyone know why Henry Lawson decide that he wanted to have a daughter. I know that he wanted to leave a legacy but why a female instead of a male? When he realized that Miranda didn't live up to his standards he had Oriana. Again, why not a male? My only guess is that Bioware put her in beca...

That would require book knowledge I reckon

@tiddy If you're talking about the ME3 question, it wasn't in the books either that I can recall

@agent86 Most awesome TV series -ever-

It's an interesting question but he kinda ends it with a sexist remark

8:26 PM
@James I haven't watched it all start-to-finish, but I like the concept and the bits I've seen. It's too bad their show on discovery was soooo terrible.

@tiddy The whole thing seems to be based on the assumption that one would prefer a male child to a female child
or worse, should

Yeah, the whole question is inherently sexist, not just the closing remark.
Also it's a stupid and speculative question.
Don't overthink it. Just kill it with fire and move on.

@LessPop_MoreFizz it's dead

hey is it ok to ask questions about things like the AGS, when its about games using the AGS not working?

8:32 PM
@GarethJones what is the AGS?

@murgatroid99 The Adventure Game Studios and its also a game engine. Its used for games such as Gemini Rue, and the Blackwell series. Its used for games like the old Kings Quest games (To make games like the old Kings Quest)

So this is a software question?

@GarethJones if you want to ask about a particular game then it should be fine. If you want to ask about the engine I think it would belong on GameDev

fbueckertI'm currently attempting to connect one of our computers in the office to a client VPN. My development machine is running Windows 7, and can connect and see resources just fine. @murgatroid99 ok, its just currently i was trying to run Gemini Rui, got massive lag, and then tested it with Blackwell Unbound, and so I think its the game sytem
So i might ask tjere

Q: Critical Hit Damage or Main Skill Attribute

Brian GrahamMy weapon has 270 intelligance (main skill attribute). I am trying to find a combination of Life on Hit and Critical Hit Damage on my weapon, but in order to get a better weapon I have to sacrifice intelligence, and I don't know the amount I can sacrifice without losing DPS.

and I fill in my info.

This needs another close vote.

And I am prompted to buy one of three Power Up packs.

@GarethJones I meant that if you want to ask about games that have been released to the public, you would ask here. If you want to ask about developing with the engine, you would ask on GameDev

8:37 PM
for fifteen, sixty or two hundred dollars

MMO's cost a lot to make

@tiddy Of course they do. And cash shops are the new normal.

Yep

But this sort of upfront feels extra-skeevy.

@murgatroid99 oh ok fair enough, so I could ask it as long was it wasnt about me USING the AGS, and the games were like Gemini Rui (Which you can buy on steam)

8:37 PM
Oh wells

@tiddy Still, think I'm gonna take the plunge.

Rockpapershotgun has been doing some interesting write ups on it
If you haven't read them, they might help
TLDR: generally positive

@GarethJones yeah. Though, you might run into the general problem with tech support questions: it's hard to answere them without access to your computer

@agent86 Did you see the first episode by chance? Where they explain why they called the show Bullshit?

@murgatroid99 Ya, i dont think ill ask, i was mainly just wondering in case i really need to

8:41 PM
@tiddy Yeah, they're what're convincing me to take the plunge
Huh... that's interesting...
I just... bought the game and it didn't charge me.
Like, I filled in info, selected a payment method, hit next, and it brought me to 'Thank you! Download client now please!"

It just knows

@tiddy We'll see if it lets me play.
Because, if so, nifty!

I'm guessing you'll need some kind of activation

I mean, they have my name and address and stuff.
We'll see. Downloading the latest client patcher atm.

Keep me posted on how the "investigative" quests play out
Those sounded the most interesting

Q: How do you get past Nocturnal's statue on the Pilgrim's Path?

JohnPut plainly, I am stuck. This is the 3rd "test" of 5 on the infamous Pilgrim's Path, and in order to pass, I must open the rock-door. Unlike other gates of its kind, there is seamingly no lever or pull-chain that raises it. So, I must believe that the statue of Nocturnal is in some way important....

@tiddy Yeah, they have me intriguededededed
the downloader is quite speedy at least.
Oh. Well, nevermind. 3/4 happened fast. 4/4 is another 14.5 gb. That'll be a while, even at 5-800 KB/s

At 99% 40 reviews from people you respect come out saying it's the worst game since E.T. The Extra Terrestrial

@MarkTrapp Well I haven't paid for it yet!

> There will be neither levels, nor classes in the game; instead, the character building will be skill-based. This way, the developers plan to avoid level grinding, allowing new players to join the game more easily.
This is funny coming from the makers of Anarchy Online, which was a level grinding simulator.
You could get up to character level 220 when I played.

@StrixVaria Skill based system done right: Asheron's Call 1.. Skill based system done horribly wrong: Eve Online :D

I have never played either of those games.

whoa, what?

user2334
9:28 PM
@StrixVaria It's six of one, half dozen of another imo. There's still progression

You two have each other not ignored?

I miss AC1.. I am glad AC2 is resting in pieces :D
@MarkTrapp Haha, So instead of one skill (level) to ... level.. You now have a large collections of skills to level.. So yeah can be a bit the same I suppose.

Jin
@James I thought you meant Armored Core

@Jin I have that same thing happen when people talk about MW :(

@MarkTrapp Yeah, but I think the point is that you can max out one build, and thus, be 'competitive' with someone at max level rather quickly - it only takes maxing out two trees out of nine.

9:31 PM
@James What else does MW stand for?

@StrixVaria Beyond Mech Warrior?? No idea :D

Jin
@James MW will always be Mech Warriors to me..

Midwinter is a first-person action role-playing game with strategy elements for the Atari ST, Amiga and PC. It was designed by Mike Singleton and was released in 1989 by Microplay Software. The game was successful enough to spawn a sequel, Midwinter II: Flames of Freedom. The Amiga version was re-released by Kixx XL in 1993. Story The game is set on the isle of Midwinter, in 2099 when the entire world is covered in snow and ice in a post-apocalyptic scenario. The game package included a quite lengthy manual narrating the game's backstory in a short novel. The game's accompanying manu...

user2334
@LessPop_MoreFizz Ah, kinda like Guild Wars

MASTERS OF STRATEGY
@MarkTrapp Yeah, basically, there are nine trees (one for each weapon), and you equip two different weapons at any given time.
So, once you max out two of them, you're gaining flexibility not power.
Or, as they like to marketing-speak it, Horizontal Progression, not Vertical Progression.

9:33 PM
@LessPop_MoreFizz So you can ultimately max out all 9 trees and switch between weapons with no loss of power?

@StrixVaria That's the idea, yeah.

That actually sounds pretty appealing to me.

@LessPop_MoreFizz Haha, May just be because I have been talking horizontal vs vertical expansion of databases the last few days but that is techie talk to me, not marketing speak :D

Too bad there's a monthly charge.

@StrixVaria You know as well as I do that it'll be F2P within six months.

9:34 PM
@LessPop_MoreFizz Got a link to the game??

@LessPop_MoreFizz I don't actually follow MMOs that closely. Is that a recent trend?

@StrixVaria Not that recent.
But yeah, most MMOs go F2P once they're on subscriber life support.

user2334
@StrixVaria If you're not World of Warcraft, you can't sustain a subscription business model. Been that way since WoW became dominant in 2005

@MarkTrapp If you're not World of Warcraft or Eve.

@LessPop_MoreFizz Hmm, art style is very similar to APB's

9:36 PM
Which... somehow miraculaously manages to do it.

user2334
@LessPop_MoreFizz Is Eve still sub based? dang, they're like the Mongols of MMOs

@MarkTrapp Eve is technically sub based, but if you play it hardcore, you can effectively play for free.

Jin
@MarkTrapp several people playing Eve with me basically play for free, thanks to the PLEX system
I heard Tera does the same thing

PLEX?

you can essentially pay in-game money for subscription cards to the game.
I believe that's called "PLEX"

9:39 PM
@RonanForman Pilots Liscence Extension.
Which is what @agent86 described.
> Tougher puzzles? Puzzles at all is an unfamiliar notion in the MMO. Hell, the notion is barely present in solo RPGs. But here your quest text might be so damned obscure you think, “Sod that, I want to hit things with my new hammer,” before you run past a building with a sign on the side, which on closer inspection offers the name of a former resident, which rings a bell with something you were told earlier by a character back at the Academy.

so if you make more money than the PLEX card cost in the time it took you to use it, you essentially keep playing without paying

> And you piece two things together, perhaps even Google some details and find a faked website extending the fiction further, and suddenly your new hammer is forgotten. You’re making notes. Actual notes on paper in front of you, as well as on the map. I think that action alone is unique.

Until the answers to all the puzzles are documented and people just Google that instead.

@agent86 Correct, and since EVE is fundamentally a game of capitalism, players tend to see exponential growth in their income if they put in the time, to the point where they can actually not only keep their sub running, but actually undercut the developer by selling PLEX's for real cash and earn some actual money.

user2334
@StrixVaria Thus, the in-game browser

9:41 PM
@StrixVaria Well yes. But the fact that that effort is there is remarkable to me.

Jin
you can also use real cash to buy a PLEX, and sell it in game for isk(money in Eve). and it sells for A LOT.

@LessPop_MoreFizz it's an interesting system they've got going on. It's kind of weird from a business perspective - essentially they're saying "use more game resources (ie, play more) and you pay less"
whereas most games want you to play less and pay more

Honestly, my main issue with most of these questions is that really, at their core, they're thinly veiled excuses to rant and vent about things that people don't like. @LessPop_MoreFizz In practice it seems that way, but I can see legitimate reasons why someone would ask why something is designed in a specific way, to better understand the game they're playing. Extrapolation and what-for.

It makes killing people with the Rainblower even more fun.

@StrixVaria my settings are so low, pyrovision for me is only weapons, miscs, lights and birthday mode

@MarkTrapp Ascribing motivations that don't exist to people we've never seen is such a popular hobby here and I just don't understand it.

@LessPop_MoreFizz Fixed ;D

user2334
@LessPop_MoreFizz This is a problem throughout SE: I'd say 25% of the time (totally scientifically accurate and not a made up percentage), the person who made the thing in question did talk about it on the record: director's commentaries, interviews, patch notes, forum posts, etc. And that, I think, is valuable to capture as it's a question enough people care about for the developer/director/etc. to take the time to address.

user2334
But all the rest of the time… feh. And it's hard for an asker to know ahead of time which side their question falls on. I don't think a question asker needs to know if their question is going to get closed ahead of time, but still it's not as clear cut as it might seem

9:54 PM
@MarkTrapp You're misinterpreting me.
I'm not talking about in the answers to these sorts of questions.
I'm talking about in Meta discussions. People like to talk about hypothetical users with spam links in their profiles that contribute quality content as if we need to protect them. Show me one, and maybe I'll believe they exist.

@LessPopMoreFizz You are choosing between Illuminati and Templar??

Like, it's nice to say 'I can see legitimate reasons to ask one of these questions that aren't just poorly disguised rants or attempts to complain about the mechanic', but I am yet to see one, so what's the point of worrying about this hypothetical beast of a question?
@James Yeah, leaning Illuminati, I think I know some people who have gone that route.
Also because NYC as home city.
And I MUST MAKE SURE IT IS ACCURATE.

@LessPop_MoreFizz Ah, background wise The Dragon seem to fit me more.
@LessPop_MoreFizz LoL.. Niice :)
@LessPop_MoreFizz Haha, If it is they had to likely pay a ton of money in licensing fees.

@James Oh, I don't care if they changed store names.
I meant architecturally accurate.

user2334
@LessPop_MoreFizz Okay, sure: my contention is that a well-worded, non-ranty "Why was it designed that way?" question is almost indistinguishable from the non-controversial questions we get all the time. One of the only reasons a "why was it designed that way?" question is bad is because it's worded as a rant, which is a fixable problem

9:58 PM
@LessPop_MoreFizz That is what has to be paid for.. Those buildings are iconic and can not appear in multimedia with out giving people money.

@MarkTrapp My point is that trying to save the ranty ones always ends poorly. We should just close them and move the fuck on.
@James Ummmm... no. That is not the case at all in most cases.
Woooooo download 30% complete.

user2334
@LessPop_MoreFizz I agree with you: why are we arguing?! My only beef is with the blanket topic ban of why was X designed that way, which is unnecessary when the main problem is people ranting, which is already banned. If a person wants to take the time to reword their "why?" question to be constructive, it's going to look like all the other questions on the site

user2334
I don't think it's necessary or wise for people to rewrite questions in an attempt to save them, that is. Let the asker do that.

@LessPop_MoreFizz k... I suppose its possible the producer was lying to me but sure. Doesnt matter much in the end I just know buildings were removed because licensing could not be secured to them.

@James Could be that certain interiors are at issue, or certain finer details, but it isn't hard to have a sufficiently generic simulacra that avoids any such issues in most representations.
It could also be an issue of calling them by name.

@LessPop_MoreFizz Pretty much only exteriors
Most of the interiors had to match the movie and were all sets.

10:14 PM
But honestly, there are enough art deco skyscrapers in the world that you can design one that resembles the chrysler building without infringing upon the chrysler building. (for example).

user2334
Most of the iconic buildings are in the National Register of Historic Places anyway

@MarkTrapp This.
@James One thing that could easily be an issue is if, for example, someone attempted to duplicate the ads in Times Square. You'd need to get approval for that obviously.

@Alok Yup. At least, that's what it is according to Blizzard's item guide.

user2334
> Buildings created after 1990 are covered by the U.S. Copyright Act. However, this does not stop you from photographing the buildings. It just stops copycat architecture.

To fully comply with the Berne Convention, Congress enacted the Architectural Works Copyright Protection Act of 1990. This ammended the Copyright Law to include a section for Architectural Works. The creative design of decorative architectural features became similar to artwork in that, if you wanted to build identical features, you might need to obtain permission from the copyrights holders.

@James Means that the flag was cleared from the message before you could dispute it.
@James Yeah, Funcom, MMO's are expensive, etc. etc.

@LessPop Is that the game I think you're talking about?

@Ronan what game do you think I'm talking about?
@James The funny part is that people have paid it.

@LessPop_MoreFizz I just dropped $100 on MineZ yesterday.. I would consider it ;)
Hell I drop $60 a month on World of Warcraft... 3 months of that for a free MMO? Might be worth it.. who knows.

10:31 PM
@James The problem is that it's extremely unlikely that the game won't be F2P in 14 months.
Which is your break even point.

@LessPop I've googled it for a picture and it looks like the cards have had a redesign from the game I've got.

@MarkTrapp Can I speak to you for a moment.

@RonanForman I'm talking about an MMO. So I'm not sure what game you're talking about.

Illuminati is a standalone card game made by Steve Jackson Games (SJG), inspired by The Illuminatus! Trilogy by Robert Anton Wilson and Robert Shea. The game has ominous secret societies competing with each other to control the world through sinister means, including legal, illegal, and even mystical. It was designed as a "tongue-in-cheek rather than serious" take on conspiracy theories. It contains groups named similarly to real world organizations, such as the Society for Creative Anarchy and the Semiconscious Liberation Army. It can be played by two to eight players. Depending on th...

@MarkTrapp You know, that attitude says a lot, and that's what I wanted to talk to you about.

Q: Steam Won't Launch - CMultifieldBlob(pSerialized)

YawusMy Steam won't launch. It gives me an error - "Steam.exe (main exception): CMultifieldBlob(pSerialized) - Bad field". What does this mean and how do I fix it?

@Jin: You know, I I hovered over the Ask Question button today, and just watched the LAzers. You're so awesome.

Jin

@LessPop_MoreFizz No.. I just... Well if you want to see what its like to be schizophrenic then I say have at it! :D

user15026
@James It always frightens me. It's too much noise.

I now see the point behind your question about damage @QAppei

10:56 PM
@AshleyNunn I just thought it would read what I was looking at.. as far as I can tell its 10000 babbling people and someone saying potato and something else I could not make out :D

Cain without damage upgrades is painful

I went back to hitting the refresh button until I found one I could read again.

Man, MS Paint Adventures is so bad.

@James Yeah, I suspect that they are trying to obscure the captcha words but it mostly just makes me twitch because it is a really unpleasant auditory experience. I have a lot of issues with noise (it makes me anxious easily) so the one time I hit the "listen" button, I was like OH DEAR GOD NEVER AGAIN

@Wipqozn no direct links allowed, foo'

@Mana It's funny because itwas a troll face.
So I just got trolled by a troll face?

@Wipqozn as you deserve

@Mana Agreed, I should have used Fluttertroll instead.
