6:00 PM
Afternoon everyone

Afternoon @SimonSheehan
Who I don't think I've ever talked to before...
so nice to meet you as well

Oh boy, Ubisoft screwed up this time.
One thing you'd think they'd have learned by now is "Don't lie to the press."

Nice to meet you @Wipqozn, I've definitely seen your name around here before :)

@Powerlord Doesn't Ubisoft do that a lot?

> War on PC gamers continues: Ubisoft misled on From Dust DRM

6:02 PM
Ubisoft makes and works with a LOT of games

@SimonSheehan I would say I've seen yours, but your avatar is what grabs my attention. You know, since your avatar is awesome.

@Wipqozn Ubisoft just spent the last several weeks promising that From Dust won't require a constant Internet connection.
Turns out it does.

I was thinking about buying From Dust, but not now.

Even better, Ubisoft is trying to erase the evidence they ever said it.

@Wipqozn Haha, thanks!
@Powerlord Huge turn off from buying the game now :/

6:04 PM
It's a shame Rock, Paper, Shotgun took a screenshot.

I don't actually mind the constant internet connection myself, but to lie to everyone about it? That's just not right.

Q: What use is a shield on my back?

JupotterIn Mount and Blade Warband, A shield, when not held in hand, is worn on the back. Does this have any benefits, or is it purely cosmetic? I may have seen something like "Arrow hit shield on back", but in the middle of a battle, I may have merged two sentences together.

It's not a huge issue if you have available bandwidth
for some though, it could be

The thing is, I'm way more likely to play a single player game if my connection is down.
I mean, I have to do something when I can't play TF2, right? ;)

Good point there.

6:08 PM
(I say this as I'm 3/4 of the way through Metroid Prime 2)

While waiting for Tf2 updates ive been playing mass effect....and on my 7th run of Metal Gear Solid 4
Although our servers rarely go down for over 10 minutes
@Powerlord Is Prime 2 any good? Had my eye on it

@SimonSheehan Well, to an extent Prime 1 was better, but it's still a pretty good game.

Hello there!

The most annoying thing is that certain areas have a constant health drain until very late in the game.
@iamserious Why so serious?

@Powerlord, hah, I had that coming, didn't I?

6:16 PM
@Powerlord Metroid in 3D scoffs

@Powerlord Gotcha. I'll probably get Infamous 2 first

@Nick It works pretty well.

@iamserious Yes, yes you did.

Guys, I was wondering what projector would be good for my xbox gaming needs.. any ideas?
3

Wow.

6:17 PM
@Wipqozn, well, this account was created on stackoverflow first, it flew from there to here so the name is stuck now!

@SimonSheehan Do you have a GameCube or Wii? If Wii, you might be able to find Prime Trilogy and get all 3 games with pointer controls. While the pointer controls can sometimes be annoying, certain enemies are a lot easier with them.

@iamserious Thank you for asking this in chat, and not as a qusetion :)

@Powerlord Got my handy dandy Wii, when it first came out :)

@Powerlord I want to play them. But I have an instinctive gag reaction to the very idea of metroid in 3D.

um, sorry, I already asked this as a question, sorry! someone there pointed me here...

6:18 PM
oh, never mind then :P

I have to say

Heh

The metal gear solid 3D looks REALLY good

@iamserious Sadly, I know very little about projectors

Nicely revamped graphics for a classic game

6:19 PM
Yeah, I can't help you either. Wish I could.

hm.. me too, that's why I'm here! Oh well!

@SimonSheehan Well, he meant 3D as in non-2D. :P

I'll star you message though, someone might see it.

@Powerlord Ah okay :P

Any Assassin's Creed fans here?
or Gears of War fans?

6:19 PM
I've played both! Totally fun.
Although I preferred AC to GoW

@Mana, yea you bet!

@Nick I think they're fun. Of course, it helps that you have the 3D equivalent of Super Metroid's Xray from the start of the game.

I loved both, they're different games, can't really compare them

I enjoy AC, but not a fan of GoW.

6:20 PM
I loved that Metroid-style 2.5d XBLA game...
What was it...

Dave?

I tend to enjoy non-linear games a lot more in general though

@Nick Shadow Complex

That!

@iamserious Yes?

6:20 PM
Shadow Complex was awesome.

It felt really great, like upgraded Metroid

The biggest problem with the Metroid Prime games is that they're a LOT longer than the side scrolling Metroid games.

oh lol, I did not realize there was a Dave here, I was joking by making a "Dangerous Dave" suggestion to Nick

I never played Shadow Complex, heard positive things though.

@iamserious Ah, all right. No problem

6:22 PM
alright guys, I'll take my quest elsewhere - typical gamer phrase eh? Ta!

One of the curses of having a very common name, I suppose
@iamserious good luck!

Sorry we couldn't be more helpful! :(

With any luck someone will see your message starred over there and be able to help.
You can always come by at another time and ask as well.

Is there a hardware SE site yet?

I don't think so, no.

6:23 PM
@Nick: The other thing about Metroid Prime is that the Scan Visor (which is a bit like the Super Metroid scan thingy as I mentioned earlier) is also used to gain lore and stuff about the game. It's optional, but as I recall, it unlocks stuff if you get 50% and 100% of scans. Which includes technology, enemies, bosses, space pirate computer consoles...

Electronics? shrugs

Q: suggest a good projector for gaming

iamseriousI am not really sure if I am in the right place to ask this question, if not, please feel free to move it to where it belongs. I am looking to buy a good projector for my gaming needs. I don't have a tv, The one screen I had, I broke it out of frustration, I threw my xbox 360 controller right in...

Q: Who is the assassin at the end of The Witcher?

Let_Me_BeOK, I figured out that the Grandmaster was actually Alvin. That wasn't hard. But who was the assassin in the end animation? I mean both the king and Gerald shared a weird look after Gerald unmasked him. So was that just because the problems didn't end, or was it someone from the story-line?

Maybe it lends to shopping too well.

Is there even a proposal for one? looks in area 51

Metroid Prime 2 is a little more lenient by not having things like Map Stations that you have to scan before you manage to use all of them.

6:23 PM
Metroid prime was awesome.

@Powerlord You're making this really hard. I may have to pick it up this weekend.

@Nick There is one problem... Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime Trilogy are both out of print.
(Metroid Prime 3 isn't... go figure)

@Powerlord Don't remind me :(

I managed to snag Metroid Prime Trilogy when it was still in stores. \o/

Hmm
I think I borrowed it from a friend a while back
And never got around to playing
Trilogy, that is

6:26 PM
@Nick this and this
actually, will those post?

I don't know why Nintendo made MPT a collector's edition.
Technically, it was the first game they did that on.
Super Mario Anniversary (or whatever it was called) was the other one they did that with.

I don't see them working either. Too narrow a focus.
Plus I can see a lot of them just being recommendation sites, which doesn't work well for a Q&A format.
anyways
I'm going home
goodbye all

@Wipqozn Stop trying to make me jealous! I'm stuck here for 3 more hours.

@Powerlord You're clearly working terribly hard
:)

6:31 PM
@DaveMcClelland Of course!
Technically, I'm supposed to be looking into how hard it is to convert our current Subversion (1.4?) Java projects over to TFS, and what we'll need installed to do it.

@Powerlord Oh dear. I've heard that setting up TFS is a total nightmare

@DaveMcClelland TFS is already set up by the .NET side.

TFS?

@Powerlord Ahh, then maybe it won't be that bad
@Nick Team foundation server

@Nick Team Fortress Server... er... I mean Team Foundation Server.

6:33 PM
@Powerlord I expected as much from you
That sounds like a nightmare, but I promised myself I wouldn't get into any more git vs. (other vcs) arguments anymore

Anyway, I think I need to use Team Explorer Everywhere to create TFS projects that can call Maven to do builds... because Maven is our dependency resolver.
Good thing I have an MSDN account.
I don't know if I need sp1 or not, though. It'd suck if sp1 required your TFS server to be SP1, too.

Q: Does hugging Leonardo da Vinci yield any benefits?

Matt ChanI just recently arrived in Venice in Assassin's Creed 2 (PC version) and started the first mission where a man gives me and Leonardo da Vinci a quick tour of Venice. At the end, there is a cut-scene with a quick-time event. Leonardo da Vinci initiates a hug and the game prompts you to push a butt...

Hey guys

@FallenAngelEyes Hey, how's gamescon going?

All done for today. Finally got to play the Guild Wars 2 demo though and chitchat with more ArenaNet staff so I'm pretty happy

6:46 PM
@FallenAngelEyes Hey. Did you harass Capcom yet? ;)

Haha no, most of the day today was spent standing in lines

Q: How does light spread in Minecraft?

MattI understand that light levels decrease by 1 each block farther away from the source you get, but is that measured diagonally as well as along the axes? Another way of asking this is: does a light source illuminate a square area around it or a diamond-shaped area? Also, does light spread around ...

It was also a lot cooler temperature wise here today so I don't feel nearly as dead

What's the deal with the bounty? The answer seems pretty definitive to me.

tomorrow is supposed to be 29C though and it's supposed to be the busiest day :(

6:52 PM
@Brant I got the impression the person offered it to get the badge for offering a bounty
@Brant Especially since they never actually posted on the question
Whoops, sorry @FallenAngelEyes

Think you mispin---yeah, haha
@Grace I have 4 shirts left and about half the stickers, should be able to give the rest out on Sat and Sun :)

@FallenAngelEyes Nice!

tomorrow's supposed to be the busiest day

@GraceNote I replied to your comment on my Meta post. How do I see which of my posts have been flagged?

@DaveMcClelland No functionality, just knowing how much was actually deleted.

6:57 PM
@GraceNote Oh. Only one post was deleted

Hum

I thought there was some more complicated way to do it

gonna shower and relax a bit, will be back later to start on blog post!

In fact, it's not even showing up as (deleted) in the transcripts

A couple of those pinned messages over on the right have been in the list for over a week. How am I supposed to see the stuff that's actually been starred on my lame 1024px monitor with our huge room description?</whine>

7:01 PM
@GraceNote Are mods able to see chat messages that have deleted?

@DaveMcClelland Not in the transcript, but through the UI otherwise, yes

@GraceNote Interesting. Just curious, really

@Nick change your name, kthx
:P

7:16 PM
how's it going?

Awesome, yo.
Just went swiiiiimmmiiiiing

@BrettWhiteΨ Is it possible to sign up for the grant as a fill-in? As in, I'm not extremely excited for it, but I'd play Madden since we'll likely have a lot of questions about it
@BrettWhite But if there are other people who are more enthusiastic with lower rep, I'd much rather it go to them instead

Q: Need clarification on the rules of caravan. (I know the basics)

Skystruck PS3I have played 18 games of caravan now.... well actually I save the gas before I play, so it has been triple that or more because every time I loose, I load the game and try again. Anyways, I understand the game pretty well. However, everywhere the rule states you need 2 caravans outbidding the op...

@DaveMcClelland Yeah I think in that case, if you don't want to play it, wait for one to come along that you are excited about. Especially if there are lower rep users that wnat it.
@DaveMcClelland I guess. I am wary about making everything 1500+ rep, just because that favors older users.

@BrettWhiteΨ I only mention it since there currently aren't 10 people signed up. Though there probably will be by next time tuesday, I would hope

7:21 PM
Oh yeah, well, if there aren't 10 people signed up by next Tuesday, then by all means, do a swoop in!
That's the term for that now, a swoop in

@BrettWhiteΨ I'm going to be on vacation all next week, so I won't be able to check back. I'll comment on it and mention that I'm interested, but only as a swoop in

@DaveMcClelland Excellent. Yeah, do whatever you can to remind me so that I can put you on the list if it isn't at 10 on Tuesday.
Comment works fine
I also think that after this week the way the games are chosen will have to change. I don't think we realized how much 10 games a week costs :/
It might have to go to like, only the Big Games that people are super pumped to play. OR maybe 3-5 users get a game a week

@BrettWhiteΨ Yeah, I figured 10 was costing more than you expected :)

All still in testing mode! Trial phase! I am up for suggestions, definitely
@DaveMcClelland Yup! I did the math today and was like "Yep, if I do this every week for the rest of 2011, that's 90% of my budget"

@BrettWhiteΨ There's some things to consider, definitely. If we end up going with only 5 games and giving it out based on descending rep, there will be a couple handfuls of people getting all the games

7:26 PM
@Powerlord At work.

@DaveMcClelland Yeah exactly. I would probably, or definitely, track who gets games so that that doesn't happen and it is distributed evenly

Maybe limiting users to one game every month or two to ensure they're only signing up for games they're really interested in?

Like, only 1 game per user every 3-6 months or something?
@DaveMcClelland Exactly!

@BrettWhiteΨ Seems reasonable
Either way, I think the grant promo is an awesome idea in general

@ArdaXi Pssh, sure you are.

7:28 PM
@Powerlord Were.
At the time I was at work.
I just came back.

Oh, and if Team Fortress 3 ever comes up, sign me up automatically.

@Powerlord Well duh

@Powerlord What's a '3'?

@ArdaXi Valve doesn't have any concept of '3' - they operate in base 3, after all
That statement doesn't make much sense the way it reads, but people who are nerds will get it

Q: Are you going to PAX Prime Aug. 26-28th?

Brett White ΨIn response to the NYCC thread, I am trying to get something together for the users venturing to Seattle for PAX Prime. With it being under a week away, it's too late for us to offer free tickets to the convention and get show specific merchandise created. What we can do, however, includes the fo...

7:30 PM
@DaveMcClelland So then the next installment is Team Fortress 10?

@Lazers If you are going, BTW, I also came in here to field suggestions about what we can do, for the peeps that are going

@BrettWhiteΨ I agree some rate-limiting is important, though if a user constantly manages to make good use of the sponsored game, it would be counter-productive to not give him a game

@ArdaXi Exactly
@ArdaXi Also - nerd!

@DaveMcClelland I got it from Portal.
2 + 2 = bzzt 10.
IN BASE FOUR! I'M FINE!

@IvoFlipse I agree with that to a point. But if lower rep users know that they can get free games for participating and getting a higher rep, then spreading the promo games around more can get the community a higher number of active users

7:32 PM
@ArdaXi That was a typo. I meant Team Fortress 10.

In the short term, we might be missing out on some potential for getting useful answers, but more active users is definitely good in the long term

Good points both, @IvoFlipse and @DaveMcClelland . It might be a combo of rep plus how much content you generate for getting the game and playing it
Although that seems kinda "paying for questions"y to me. Still trying to walk that line.

@BrettWhiteΨ It's paying to improve the community. Nothing wrong with that

@BrettWhiteΨ its better than throwing stuff at random people and hoping its sticks
@BrettWhiteΨ I do think the 10 games might become problematic in the blockbuster season though ^^

@IvoFlipse Yeah, 10 games is going to become a LOT less soon.

7:40 PM
@NickT I'm the one who gets all the mis-mentions

@BrettWhite is the ThinkGeek merch going to be stack-exchange branded?

> On Tuesday, HP was talking to the Wall Street Journal about putting WebOS in stoves, fridges and cars. By Thursday, HP didn't even want to put WebOS into smartphones and tablets.

8:01 PM
Looks like all my hard work ignoring WebOS finally paid off.
'nuff said.

HP seems to be going through an identity crisis.
Seriously, they're ditching their PC division, despite being the #1 company in PC sales worldwide.

Yeah, it's....strange.
Was IBM's PC division profitable before they sold it to Lenovo?

@Brant I think so. Back before IBM sold their PC division, Thinkpads used to be one of the more popular laptop brands... iirc even above the Macbook line.

In regards to this question, for some background, it was originally posted as an answer on the other Caravan question.
I told him that in the future to ask a question he should use the Ask Question button...which he uh did.
I'm not sure if his question goes over material that was answered in the other question since I don't play FO:NV

Q: Game crash and runtime issues with Wine

Edmund DoyleI am running Ubuntu 11.04 on a Sony Vaio. I am using wine 1.3 to run a rather complex yet archaic gaming program, "Pirates of the Caribbean" (2003; not based off the movie). I started it up and after five minutes it crashed. I unplugged the computer, and when I tried to run the program it crashed...

8:13 PM
@Manaಠдಠ Well, it says +1 Card +1 Action. Because it's a Duration card, it also has text for your next turn (+1 Card).

Yo @Gilles.

Oh wait... that's Caravan in the Dominion card game, not Fallout.

@Gilles Someone's having trouble running a game in Wine, maybe the real expertise is here

hmmm. Not sure if it should stay on U/L or go to Gaming.

Oh, yay. Wine.
aka the program that reminded me why I use Windows as the OS to run games.

8:17 PM
You have to admit it's pretty awesome that you can run even a single Windows game on Linux.

@Manaಠдಠ Given that It crashes in windows as well it might get moved to Super User

@Manaಠдಠ The last time I tried using Wine (on... Ubuntu 9.10, I think), I mismapped one of the drives, tried to fix it, broke it even worse, and aptitude purging wine and reinstalling wine wouldn't let me reconfigure it, nor would deleting the .wine (iirc) directory in my /home/powerlord directory.
aptitude purge is supposed to blow away all configuration files, and clearly it wasn't.

@Gilles If it gets moved to Super User I can almost guarantee you it's going to get moved to here.

I'm still surprised with the reaction people got for editing old questions. I mean, when I edited a batch of old questions literally just to get rep, nobody complained.

@ArdaXi er... you get rep for editing questions? :P
I mean, above 1000 rep that is?

8:26 PM
@Powerlord No, the questions were ones where I had an accepted answer.
Editing the question leads to bumping it, which leads to users opening it, which leads to them upvoting me.
It was quite an elaborate scheme.

My favorite kind of edits.

See, now I'm wondering if one or both people involved in that argument in English got suspended.

It seems Chaos was the only one suspended.

Am I missing drama?

Unless we're thinking of different arguments
@Brant Some stuff in the ELU chat got flagged

8:30 PM
Oh, the chat

Question: If I flag a chat message for Moderator attention, is it just that site's moderators that see it?

In chat? No, all network-wide-10k+ers who are online see it.

@Brant Spam/Offensive is 10k users, I know. But is Moderator Attention?

@Powerlord All SE mods see it

@Powerlord I don't think so.

8:34 PM
Oh, I didn't even realize there were two kinds of flags in chat. That's interesting.

But every moderator sees it.
Not just the ones for your site. If you flag something for moderator attention in a Cooking room and @badp is online, he will also get the flag.

@ArdaXi I suspected as much, just wanted to confirm it.
@Brant Moderator Attention allows you to list a reason.

I've never seen a flagged message on my site, but I get plenty of flag notifications. Usually for English.

Whereas Offensive/Spam doesn't.

@Powerlord As you are well aware, moderatorship isn't limited by site on chat.
@Powerlord It's because Spam/Offensive means 'delete this' while moderator attention could also be 'edit this' or even 'pin this' (although that might be abuse of the feature).

8:37 PM
What the hell?
I don't even.

@Brant Black magic.

Q: Who is Brigit in Fall from Heaven 2

JupotterIn the Civ IV mod Fall from Heaven 2, there are a number of "Uniques Features" on the map. One of them is called thr Ring of Carcer, a magic ring holding an angel called Brigit. The tooltip only says that a level 15 unit can enter the ring, but nothing about what happen when a unit enter. Is Brig...

Seriously, what the hell?
I am either missing something very obvious or something very strange.

Something tells me DateTime.Now is returning you a very large value
or a weird value

DateTime.Now is just a plain old System.DateTime

8:40 PM
@Brant Why does it say "let" where there should be a variable type? ;)

It's a LINQ statement.
Part of one, anyway.

Method chaining is so much more clear.
I like how easy it is to write plain LINQ, but I always convert it to a method chain.

@BrettWhite you around?

@ArdaXi I usually do too, but expression syntax is great if you need to just do a simple projection.

I just assume the let thing is changing the variable type.

8:45 PM
@Brant It's like I said, it's great to write, but hard to understand.

from widget in widgets
select new DataTransferObject {
This = widget.thing,
That = widget.otherThing
}

I mean, that's all I can assume. Clearly when it's a Double in the linq statement, it's working fine.
and casting to an int should also be fine, so where's the -18 coming from?

Exactly.

@Brant widgets.Select(w => new DataTransferObject { This = w.thing, That = w.otherThing});
Much clearer, IMO.

Yeah, but when you have enough properties it gets to be really long, so you have to break it into multiple lines, at which point it's just nicer to use an expression instead
it just looks nicer to me. anything nontrivial is done with method syntax though.

8:49 PM
For me, LINQ is too much like English. It distracts from code. If you're reading C# and all of a sudden you have to decipher LINQ it's like you're reading a whole new language.
(Which you kind of are)

Sometimes I even mix the two, like this:

I try to avoid LINQ when I can. Since I don't do a lot with .NET, that's actually pretty easy.

twitches
@Brant You're the reason we can't have nice things.
@Powerlord LINQ is absolutely brilliant if you know how to use it properly.

What's wrong with that?

8:51 PM
If I'm going to mess with DB stuff in .NET, I'm more likely to use Entity Framework first.

Beats the hell out of foreach.

@Powerlord Err... LINQ does that.

Linq is just a way of working with collections. The backing store can be all sorts of different things.
in-memory objects, a database (i.e. linq-to-sql or EF), xml, etc

What I like most about LINQ is that I write the same code whether it's in a database or in-memory.

Well, if you're hitting a database you still have to think about exactly what you're asking for, like you always do
but it's amazing for when you've got a list/array/collection/enumerable and you want to do something with it.
Which is all the freaking time.
