what are your goals for it?

Goal #1: Get it running
Goal #2: See Goal #1

haha. you like cars? welcome to your new hobby: wishing you could drive it

@DavidWinslow - You speak from experience, I see.
Yah, his Impreza is coming along. I just need to get time to work on it.

looks like a fun project.
so i ordered a shift kit for my th325.. two in fact. they called me to let me know they spoke to the manufacturer and there was only one to ship me because it was the last one
ever

"ever" ... that's funny.

That is AWESOME!
And it should work great, actually.
One of the posts said something about not doing it if it were cast iron ... all you have to do is put it on "heated dry" and it shouldn't be an issue.
When I was in BASIC Training for the Army, we ran as hot of water as we could into the sink, then dunked our rifles into them to clean them out ... no rusting issues there. Worked great. Water evaped from the guns before anything could happen.

i think my wife would kill me more than anything
but thinking about spending x amount of dollars for someone to leave that in a tank overnight is killing me XD

Yes, I just installed a new one in our kitchen a few months ago ... don't think I'd dare to do it either.
Absolutely ... really shouldn't be that expensive though, I wouldn't think.
I don't think they leave them over night, either. Just for an hour or something along those lines.

i called every shop in my area. the only place that wasnt awful over the phone wanted a $500 deposit lol

You're kidding me ... I'd take it down to the local car wash and have at it.
Absolutely stupid.
Anyway, I need to head to bed. Thanks for stopping in. Hope you find something a little more reasonable for that block to get washed.

12:19 AM
ok thanks ill be around to answer some questions for the next few days nice to see ya

@DavidWinslow - Later Bro! Have a good one and keep us up to date with the Caddy!

12:50 AM
Hey, I've been editing questions these past couple of days and have notice a non-negligible amount of questions do not have an actual question. I've been putting in a simple "What could be causing this? How do I diagnose this?", but I don't know if that's acceptable or annoying people.
Also, I've been editing several questions bumped by Community. I feel bad for re-bumping them after editing, but they're on the front page anyways.

1:09 AM
@ZachMierzejewski that sounds like a perfectly reasonable edit. Sometimes people come in the door with a useful set of symptoms but don't actually state the problem that they're trying to solve.

1:58 AM
@ZachMierzejewski Don't worry about re-bumping them. Since your doing valuable editing, the community doesn't mind seeing them twice.

Q: Engine overheating/mayo in oil sump mystery

Aram AlvarezSo I have this old Skoda Estelle with its original carbureted engine working so far so good. A few days ago I realized it was consuming too much water and running a bit hot. A few days later I found out the water was coming into the oil sump and contaminated the oil, the famous "mayo" thing. I ...

This is a nice question

3:26 AM
lets try to get a look at the engine
boy these are weird looking engines

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 The Ford Pinto problem...
Ford found out they would explode when crashed into, but worked out it was cheaper to deal with the lawsuits than to issue a recall. The media found out...

@NickC - I mentioned the "Chariot of Fire" a little further up the chat.
But exactly.
Car companies do it all the time. Like I said ... Risk Management
Off to get my workout in ... be back on later.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 So you did, I missed that!

Q: If the square root of two is irrational, why can it be created by dividing two numbers?

Jake WickhamI'm doing pre-calculus and got a bit caught on this question… I looked online and it said that a number is rational if it can be the quotient of two integers. So I did this: I know that it is irrational because if this was actually rational, mathematicians would have figured out. So my questio...

11:04 AM
@Zaid not so good question, IMHO

@Myself I like the top answer

@Zaid Yes, that's a good one
Short, but contains every necessary information to point the asker in the right direction without leaving room for wrong assumptions

Q: 04 GMC Savanna G2500 4.8 V8 No Power

BenFirst time I looked at this the A/C compressor clutch wasn't engaging. Long story short: the high side pressure switch on the back of the compressor was unplugged. Noted that the engine was shaking (like it was misfiring) as I was watching them add refrigerant. The next day I get the call asking...

@Zaid I do everything with a calculator and believe whatever numbers the calculator shows me and it showed me that if I type 5318008 ... ;-)

@MoveMoreCommentsLinkToTop Not this one I'm afraid.
I realise I'll have to take pictures of the damned place one day.

@BobCross, congratulations on your re-election.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 @DucatiKiller @BobCross Congrats for the election. Thanks to all the candidates and to the pro-tempore mod team.

12:06 PM
@BobCross So: 10E99 + 1 - 10E99 = 0 ? :)

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 @DucatiKiller My slate-of-wood-and-testicles workbench idea failed miserably.
@MoveMoreCommentsLinkToTop With a 2A draw at 12V I think you are right in saying that a motorbike battery is unlikely to do the trick.

12:20 PM
@BobCross 55378008 was doing the rounds a fair bit in the early noughties

@JoErNanO Actually I see only three possibilities for you:
1. You carry always a big, heavy UPS to your garage.
2. You get a power line in your garage.
3. You get a new garage

Thanks and thanks again. :-)
@Zaid see that's just sad. Why make the world a worse place? ;-)

@Myself I think that LED lights and a car battery should do the trick. Or LED lighting with inbuilt rechargeable batteries. No need for an UPS. I can't get a power line in there since there are no plugs. I could get a new garage but across the town there are only two places where garage boxes have electricity. Both are far away from my house and don't really strike me as the most secure places to store motorbikes. Does the term "paper garage doors" ring any bells. :)

@JoErNanO Ok, got it.
"garage boxes": Are they outdoors?

@Myself Exactly.
We are talking about a row of garage boxes, with thin rusty doors, easily accessible from the public street. No barrier or anything.
At least my current setting is underground and there are two thick electrical doors between my garage and the public road.

12:29 PM
Some solution as "solar panel - > charger -> battery" would be viable?

@Myself It could be. I can maybe run a long cable. I'll need to find a solar panel with enough juice though.
Dammit I gotta get a real job, buy an actual house, build a garage, and go live in it forever.

@JoErNanO pro tip; the spouse gets cranky if you live exclusively in the garage. Adapt that info to your situation before making life choices.... ;-)

@BobCross You're not gonna talk me out of my life plan, are you?! :)

@JoErNanO not at all. Just laying some knowledge on you. Think of me as the voice of Garages Future. Wooooo! Spoooooky!!!!!
Real life frustration: let's go, updated DNS record! Where are you? I'm sick of typing raw IPs!
My life is such a trail of tears.

12:45 PM
@DucatiKiller Did you guys make it already?
@Zaid You are too kind! I will take a look.

@JoErNanO TYVM

1:08 PM
@JoErNanO I now have a similar problem - my new garage is in a block around 100m from the house, so running a power cable ought to be just about possible, but will be a PITA and expensive if I want one hefty enough to take a decent current
I've bought one of these as a short-term lighting fix: screwfix.com/p/ae0295-rechargeable-led-work-light-23w-12-240v/…
but I think a genny is probably the best option for power tools
that or battery-powered tools ,but they tend to be expensive

@NickC How is the worklight? Does it provide a decent amount of light? Focused or not?

1:35 PM
@NickC - Battery tools for the win.

A small air compressor is priceless, even better : A big one

1:55 PM
@IanRingrose I'm not particularly bothered about how it's implemented; as long as users receive relevant posts for review I couldn't care less if the process involved pixie dust, oompa-loompas and one-eyed unicorns. — Zaid 3 mins ago
The user doesn't need a cordless drill, they need a hole in the wall
@Myself some jokes are better left unexplained :)

@Zaid do I messed up your insider joke by explaining it?

@Myself fortunately it's not my joke. But I don't think you understood what Bob was talking about :)

@Myself - Your sense of humor ... Priceless

2:12 PM
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Biggest problem on chat is that it is quite difficult to know if somebody is intending on making a joke, insulting somebody or just trying to bring in some thoughts.
Just to clarify: I did not try to rub it in that missing power is a bad thing

@Myself Yes you did you mean meanie!
Don't hide behind the air compressor!

@JoErNanO I will stand ashamed in the edge. I promise
:)

I think @JoErNanO needs to redefine what constitutes a garage:

^ love it

@Zaid I doubt the the ladies will agree

2:23 PM
@Zaid There'll be no 4-wheelers in my garage, thank you very much.

@JoErNanO It does provide a decent amount of light, and it's got a big diffuser, so you get a fairly even spread, but it's still a point source, so you still have the usual problem of getting in your own shadow as you're trying to work
@Myself The problem with that is that most consumer air compressors are mains-powered! Petrol ones seem to be really expensive

@NickC Thanks for the comeback. I could put them on a stand either side of the workbench to fight with the shadows.

@JoErNanO I was thinking of trying to make a mount above the workbench to create a downlighter
but I have to make the workbench first...
and would still need some kind of ground-level light for when working unde ra car

Nick is solar an optionÉ

@JoErNanO my bad. Hope this is better :)

2:26 PM
@NickC OK it is pretty clear to me that this should become a Mechanics.SE project. I'll start creating the kickstarter bid.

@JonathanMusso It might be - I need to see if I can mount something on the rood

@Zaid Does it fit a track bike in thhere?

roof even
@JoErNanO :)

@NickC I heard that @BobCross and @Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 are loaded and will be more than happy to be our angel investors.
3

@JoErNanO maybe it is the track tricycle :)

2:28 PM
@DucatiKiller On the other hand might have to be the CTO. Else he'll get jealous and all. You know how these things go @NickC.
@Zaid Now there's a great idea.
@Zaid How do you knee drag on it? Does it require a co-pilot?

@JoErNanO do I have to explain everything? :)

2:45 PM
@Zaid So you're saying we need a native Indian driver?

@JoErNanO dude, it's way too early in the day to get loaded. I want to keep my job!

3:02 PM
@BobCross Oh come on be honest. Don't you wish you were at home in the garage sipping a nice Port Ellen?

@JoErNanO the important thing is the paint scheme. The driver is an optional extra

@Zaid Oh yes. Obviously. That's Ducati Racing Yellow right there.

@JoErNanO I have ten GALLONS of beer at home, waiting to go into bottles. Every day is a struggle not to just stick a straw in there and drink my sorrows away. ;-)

Party at @BobCross' house everyone!

In the wild days, many years ago at the workplace of a good friend of mine they had the habit of shocking the new colleagues.
So during driving his ambulance he asked the new medic to get him "his epilepsy medicine(!)" from the glove box. Hearing that her ambulance driver suffers from epilepsy she looked a bit worried.
When she opened it some empty beer bottles fell out (he placed them before)
So later in the day she wanted to confront the boss about it. When she opened his door she noticed some bottles of wine on his desk...

My address is 123 Fake Street, Nowhere NY 78910

Turns out that she was kinda angry when they admitted that everything was made up

:D
@BobCross Isn't it 1313 Cemetery Lane?

@JoErNanO not according to Google

@JoErNanO Perhaps using body parts as components to your wood bench undermined your success. Just thinking out loud here....

@JoErNanO - Yah, wish in one hand, spit in the other ... I'm about as loaded as the bank vault portrayed in the movie Now You See Me ... It's all there one minute; the next? Poof - gone

3:21 PM
Howdy @Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2

Hey guys
How are those shiny diamonds treating you?

@Zaid We are heady with power. It's corrupting us. @Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 won't even return my chatting requests. It's the beginning of the Apocalypse.
@Zaid Other than that. It's an amazing day!!!!! How you doin?
PLUS....there's this.
Paul the Octopus (26 January 2008 – 26 October 2010) was a common octopus who was used to predict the results of association football matches. Accurate predictions in the 2010 World Cup brought him worldwide attention as an animal oracle. During divinations, Paul's keepers would present him with two boxes containing food. Each box was identical except for the fact that they were decorated with the different team flags of the competitors of an upcoming football match. Whichever box Paul ate from first would be considered his prediction for which team would win the match. His keepers at the Sea Life...

@DucatiKiller surviving. Getting ready to wrap up my day at the office

@DucatiKiller going home in a few minutes

I'm just starting mine. 8:30 AM here.

3:36 PM
@DucatiKiller Should've hacked sturdier bodies.

@DucatiKiller - Doomed I tell yah!

@JoErNanO Should.....would....could....these are all words.

Nay, Hopping back and forth between online and work computer. I cannot see the online side when I'm on the work computer. KVM switches the display out.
@DucatiKiller - Good, usable words.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 What box are you going to eat out of for the Cleveland vs Chicago series?

@DucatiKiller Your not talking about your fellow mod, I hope?

3:39 PM
@anonymous2 Of course not!

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Maybe if you stopped spending it all on wrecked old shattered cars and bought a nice new shiny Ducati for a change... :)
OK wait a second. Did we really elect @BobCross @DucatiKiller and @Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2?! For Pete's sake WHAT HAVE WE DONE?!
There's no coming back.

You mean we can't impeach?
What kind of democracy is this?

@DucatiKiller - I think I'm on a starvation diet for that one.

@JoErNanO There's no point in looking backward. Just look to the future and it's greyscale lifeless landscape.

3:50 PM
And that landscape is very barren.

It's intimidating.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Oh dear, I guess I expressed the wrong sentiments in my meta post, then.

Google Fiber is pulling out of Phoenix. The humanities....
Why can't we have nice things here?

@DucatiKiller It's like Mordor.

3:53 PM
@JoErNanO It's exactly like that

Mod-er-a-tor spinning in a tree!
Mod-er-a-tor can’t see me!
Attercop! Attercop!
Won't you stop,
Stop your spinning and look for me!
Not in Mordor, but anyhow.
JK, BTW.

Bilbo had a way with words.

Mod-er-a-tor spinning on the web!
Mod-er-a-tor can’t ping me!
Attercop! Attercop!
Won't you stop,
Stop your googling and look for me!
Try that instead.
Ok, never mind. I'm in a weird mood today.
Don't take me seriously.

@anonymous2 Sometimes we just need to express ourselves.
I'll express myself and say, this article makes me very sad.

@DucatiKiller 'Tis the case. You still have to watch out what you say, though...
@DucatiKiller Don't worry, it's just Audi...

4:01 PM
<sigh>
It's very sad.....

(Like as though they weren't worth $14 Billion.)

Memories of Allan McNish crushing everyone
I'm exhausted. Can I borrow a cot from someone?

@DucatiKiller - sure

@DucatiKiller Come here and ask me in person, perhaps I will say yes. :)

@Zaid I was looking at the photos display on my phone the other day. I haven't been to South America, Africa or Antarctica. There's your hint for the day.

4:10 PM
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 @Myself TY.....such givers!
@BobCross No Interwebs in Antarctica. IMO it needs to be deprecated from the list.

@DucatiKiller that's not actually true. You just need to go to the right place. Secretlairs.com for all your remote fortresses of evil!

@BobCross Is that where the bot get's installed to my machine and it becomes a DDOS minion?

@DucatiKiller only if you're a NEWB! LOLZ ROFL ZOMG! 🙄

@BobCross Don't hate me because I'm beautiful.

1 hour later…
5:34 PM
@DucatiKiller no risk of that!

So much blue...
my eyes...

@LynnCrumbling lol

Oh dear god. Another one.

It's everywhere

@LynnCrumbling we're catching
there is no vaccination against the hammer of the mods

5:38 PM
It's incredible how many sites you are a mod of, Rory.
I spent five minutes with your profile... crazy.

@LynnCrumbling nah - I can count them on the fingers of 1 hand (in binary)

laugh
Which was your first... IS?

I am reasonably good at multitasking (well, context switching, really) and a fairly strong priority/time management background

I'd think that you'd need to be... do you spend time in other chatrooms, too?

@LynnCrumbling Sec, then Music, then maybe Parenting or Productivity, then Sound and Video, then Outdoors

5:40 PM
Oh, dear god...
I just clicked on your name.

@LynnCrumbling I have 29 open now, but only 7 of those are active
@LynnCrumbling oh dear - what happens?
Oh - I see
well, some of them are low traffic for alerts etc

@RoryAlsop I was wondering if you had any addictive behavior re: SE

@DucatiKiller lol - I don't think so actually. But I do think I'm mildly addicted to Ingress

content_fail

And I'm not continuously on - I switch in and out frequently

5:42 PM
No scroller.

Mornings, lunch and evenings are solid slots, but I also kill time at coffee breaks with a quick check on the mobile app
etc
@LynnCrumbling I may need to raise a bug post on meta :-)

laugh #SEAddictedProblems

@LynnCrumbling nah - it's either that or play 2048, or do Sudoku or something - I really don't like doing nothing
at least this way I can be helpful

Do you get swag for EACH site that you're a mod of?

@LynnCrumbling I think so. Most of my swag is from being in the top 1 or 2 pages of a site when they have a Top Users swag thing

5:44 PM
[at christmastime]

on graduation, top users get "stuff"

Nice...

@LynnCrumbling So I have a lot of t-shirts :-)

Wait.. am I a top user?

@LynnCrumbling check the users page on each site you are on, click on the All Time filter, and generally it's the first 2 pages :-)

5:45 PM
Page 2.
Towards the bottom.

@LynnCrumbling which is usually fine - I think that's the criterion SE use

I wonder if they already captured the top list, or whether that happens at some future point when artwork is put into place.

@LynnCrumbling that I don't know

And how do they contact you for your snail mail addr?

@LynnCrumbling your profile (not the public one) has the email you registered with

5:48 PM
Ah, they send you an email, eh?
@RoryAlsop Have you seen this? hackernoon.com/…

@LynnCrumbling I hadn't - I've been at a conference in Germany since Friday. Just arrived home an hour ago.

You're in the UK, right?

@LynnCrumbling Scotland, so.... yes, currently :-/

Nice!
Arright, I need to go write some emails. We now return you to your regularly scheduled wall-o-blue, brought to you by Mods-R-Us (tm)

@LynnCrumbling lol - see you later

5:52 PM
Catch you around ...

6:14 PM
@LynnCrumbling, @RoryAlsop is actually the SE mod who moderates the greatest number of sites.

@anonymous2 there are quite a few mods with a few sites though
well, 12 of us with 3 or more

6:30 PM
@RoryAlsop Yes, and of course some, like @terdon, mod a couple big sites. In his case, Ask Ubuntu & Linux & Unix.
Or ChrisF who mods SO as well as three others.

congrats new mods. . . welcome to the family!

6:53 PM
@DucatiKiller - You out there?
@DᴀʀᴛʜVᴀᴅᴇʀ TY!

Oh, @DucatiKiller, @Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 - meta.stackexchange.com/questions/286330/…
Animuson's comment

7:08 PM
@RoryAlsop - Awesome ... not sure I saw a link for that, but will look again.
@RoryAlsop - I found the link ... for some reason, I didn't get down to the bottom of the email. I cannot do it at work. Must be some policy in place preventing a secure connection for some reason (stupid).

7:25 PM
Glad to have helped - the mod hat is cool

@DᴀʀᴛʜVᴀᴅᴇʀ TY
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Yes. In and out.

@DucatiKiller - Did you get the ping for it? I left it in the room for you.

did not

7:53 PM
@JoErNanO Then how the crap do people drive vehicles in there? I'm not doubting you, just wondering how they get away with that.

8:14 PM
At work we have access to a Subway sandwich shop. They finally take me serious when I tell them I want "Lots of pickles" ... its awesome, they stuff them on!

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 How often do you eat there?
And btw, any suggestions for this one here?

Q: Alternator capacity and electricity flow, Isolator relay, wire gauge and auxilliary battery

BJ RavalI need to power computer monitors consuming a total of 380 watts (I calculated 31.6 amps from a previous post by Alec Teal, (Thank you so much for such an informative answer!!) in an SUV having an alternator rated at 105 Amps. I am thinking of using a 12vdc 40Ah SLA battery as auxiliary battery t...

It would be my opinion we should leave it here and see if it can get answered. Like Zach stated, it'd get closed over on electronics.SE
@anonymous2 - At the Subway or at work?

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Subway.

Since I have class on Wednesday nights, I usually grab a 1/2 of sub for dinner. Class is here on sight at work, so while it makes for a long day, it's convenient.
I would eat at Subway more often, if that gives you any indication. I just could not afford to do it all crazy like Jerrod or something.
@anonymous2 - PS: I like this question. I think it's a great crossover question on stuff we don't see very often.

8:29 PM
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Neat. I agree about the pickles, but no Subways where I work...

We have a very large building (like the third largest office building in the DC area after the Pentagon & Reagan buildings). Something like 3.1M sq ft. At the 1st floor level, we have an atrium with several different places to buy food. Quite a selection, in fact. A little bit more expensive than if we went out on the economy, but considering we don't have to go anywhere to get the food, I'm good with it.

Two different worlds. I have approximately one choice of where to eat... but it's pretty neat because it's a friend's house. :) Come to think of it, if I did have other choices, I wouldn't take them.
Unless I'm working for myself, that is; in which case I eat at home.

@anonymous2 - That's pretty cool.
I usually pack my lunch for work, but since on Wednesdays I have to eat lunch and dinner, I just buy 1/2 a sandwich for dinner instead of packing two meals.
Actually three meals, because I eat b-fast here as well (bring it in).
I try to be a little frugal.

Sure. It saves money to bring in lunches.

absolutely

8:40 PM
It also uses up leftovers from yesterday evening... :)

And since my Mo-n-Law makes me the lunches, I'm going to keep eating them, lol.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Money you can put aside for the next Ducati...

I don't complain one little bit!
@anonymous2 - I wish my wife would let me ride.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Sounds great...
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 To be honest, I don't have a bike, never have, probably never will.
That is, except a bicycle.

She laid down the law early in our marriage about riding MCs ... the general feeling was something like: Not no, but HECK no!

8:42 PM
They take special permit in CA.
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 It was worth it though, right? :)

They do here as well. And I take it you mean Canada and not California?
@anonymous2 - Um ... sure

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Yes, lol.
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Hey!
:)

Where abouts in CA do you live again?

Are you bi-lingual?

8:44 PM
Oui, monsieur!

On n'a pas de choix.

I took a quarter of French in my Senior year of High School.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Neat!

Like I remember about two words now.

8:45 PM
I know a French mechanic who only knew three English words when he started out in mechanics.
No, engine, and toast.

The only reason I didn't flunk the class was the teacher was nearly blind. Me and this other guy would use erasable ink on our papers and always exchange papers for grading, then we'd correct enough stuff so we'd pass the class.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Aha!
Confession at last, eh?
I can't believe how expensive FS36 throttle cables are!

Nah. It's been known for a long time.
What's an FS36?

String timmer.
Stihl.
Nice trimmer.

Just throw some bailing wire in there and call it a day.
;-)

8:48 PM
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Lol, that might work, except we use baling twine these days, so I don't have access to baling wire.
Seriously, it's just a 1/32" steel cable with a bend on each end.
I'm going to find some kind of makeshift, like you said.

@anonymous2 - Good choice if it's expensive.

Well, expensive compared to the whacker.

Man.. I wish I knew someone up here who can weld.

I can down here, lol.

@LynnCrumbling Man, I wish I could weld.

8:52 PM
<grin>

Get yourself a cheap welder and have at it on some scrap metal.

I have a snowblower attachment for my lawn tractor that the lift broke on...

Gotcha ... bring it by the house tomorrow and I'll fix ya up ;-)
I bought a cheap welder from Harbor Freight a few years back. I use it infrequently, but when I need it, it works really good.

k.. be right down
Any plans to be up here in the next two months?

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Hmm, not sure how much it's worth after all. I've seen it go for $90 CAD, but the only one I find on ebay is going for $60 + $40 shipping with... you guessed it, the throttle linkage broken.
