2:00 PM
There was the Hoffman of the Hoffman degradation, and the Hoffmann of the Hoffmann elimination, but no Hoffmann as famous as the Hoffmann whose first name is Woodward.

Robert Upshur "Bob" Woodward (born March 26, 1943) is an American investigative journalist

ron
He was a great man, had he not dies so young, he would have been the first to receicve two Nobel prizes in the same field

Whom are we talking about?

ron
wanna hear another woodward story?

Yep.

2:03 PM
@ron you start your story by that time we will find right Woodward.

Grabs popcorn

ron
Nobel prize winner in chemistry!!

@ron When did the 1st one end?

@MARamezani grabs your popcorn

@Freddy HEY! GIVE ME BACK MY POPCORN!

ron
2:04 PM
Have you heard of the Woodward Hoffmann rules, if not the story above wouldn't make sense

@Freddy grabs your share of popcorn

Haha, poor Hoffmann
Overshadowed

ron
Let me trythe next one

The Woodward–Hoffmann rules, devised by Robert Burns Woodward and Roald Hoffmann, are a set of rules in organic chemistry predicting the barrier heights of pericyclic reactions based upon conservation of orbital symmetry. The Woodward–Hoffmann rules can be applied to understand electrocyclic reactions, cycloadditions (including cheletropic reactions), sigmatropic reactions, and group transfer reactions. Reactions are classified as allowed if the electronic barrier is low, and forbidden if the barrier is high. Forbidden reactions can still take place but require significantly more energy. The Woodward...
thank me later

@ron You don't expect me to predict barrier heights!

ron
2:05 PM
Woodward grew up rather poor, but a benefactor appeared who recognized his brilliance and got him into MIT
He flunked out his first year

I wish i can remember anything from organic chemistry ...

ron
the benefactor got him readmitted a year later

I think I'm smelling Oliver Twist, Chemistry Version.

ron
3 or 4 years after getting readmitted to MIT undergrad he had obtained his PHD at MIT

ron
2:07 PM
When he won the Nobel Prize at Harvard, MIT sent a school newspaper reporter to interview him

I think I'm supposed to be intrigued by this story, but my lower jaw won't let me...
Triple :O

ron
He ashed wOODWARD, WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART OF GETTING BOTH DEGREES IN 3 YEARS?

Aha.

@Freddy You probably confused me by this:

It was asking non-homework questions at chemistry.SE I suppose.

2:08 PM
11 mins ago, by Freddy
@ron You mean bob woodward

ron
Woodward replied, the logistics, choosing my classes such that I would be able to get around and take all of the final exams!
yes bob w

Everybody interrupting story

Hahaha!

i will flag you all

haha

2:09 PM
@Freddy Let me kick-mute someone here...

lol

I have already flagged someone

@ron Being a university student is exhausting, so I've heard.

Didn't know Woodward was quite so amazing

@Freddy NOOOOOOO!

ron
2:10 PM
Anyway, back to your Saitsev-Markovnikov story, a lot of stuff like that gies on in chemistry
@NicolauSakerNeto I think most would agree, the greatest organic chemnist ever

@Freddy Was that needed?

@ron For example, me and you are bitter rivals

@MARamezani It's not you

Hides in the closet

a wise man said "Chat is an asynchronous communication protocol " :D

2:11 PM
@Gowtham A wise man? That was me. Thank you.

I knew he had a great impact in the field of natural product synthesis, but not that he was the pinnacle of organic chemists

@DelPate I have just flagged saying "interrupting ron's story"

ron
he contributed in sooo many organic areas

so i don't think any action will be taken

@NicolauSakerNeto A noble Nobel Prize... Speaks loud.

2:12 PM
You flagged my message for this reason? @Freddy

@Freddy You'll call a poor mod here and drive them from their coffee for this?

I never considered flagging for fun

@ron Dunno if I said it, I was looking for you and Dave and Martin and Klaus and Nicolau the other day.
I didn't find you and Dave. :-(

ron
looking where?

On the net, so that I'll find who you are, what your publications are etc.

2:14 PM
I asked @ron about his publications.... he won't give in. :)

@DelPate I don't remember who was that but whosoever was first to interrupt i flagged that OP.

@ron Tell us tell us tell us tell us tell us tell us tell us tell us tell us tell us tell us tell us tell us tell us tell us tell us etc.

ron
Are all of you undergrad chem majors?

etc.??

@ron I'm 16.
Don't worry. I'm not your student. :}

ron
2:16 PM
but you like chem?

@Freddy That is not what flagging is for!!

@ron I looove chem. Pretty newbie to organochem, but I loove it.

ron
It's a wonderful feeling to be passionate about something.

Indeed.

@DelPate I have not flagged it as offensive i have flagged it for moderators attention. Btw why are so serious?

2:17 PM
My teacher made me passionate about chemistry.
@Freddy Flagging is serious!!!

ron
Ah, a special individual with a gift

@ron Thanks. But am I gifted? I think not.

ron
We each have a gift, just have to find what it is
4

Must...resist...starring...

@MARamezani I have flagged that with message "interrupting ron's story :)" if that is not allowed they will take action. (Do you really think they will consider that?)

2:20 PM
@Freddy I give you an extremely complicated and calculative physical chemistry question. It has a lot of decimals and numbers. You finally reach at an answer. And now I simply say that, Just jokin, its not H2O over there in the question, its H2O2 . Hahaha How is that??

@MARamezani surely your maturity is one among many other gifts ;)

@Freddy Well, flags in chat mean you were having a fight with someone.

ron
OK, I need to roll, catch everyone later, bye

I don't know if they like feeling like their legs are pulled. :}

bye

2:21 PM
@ron Bye!
@Gowtham Okay I think we're....

See ya ron

@NicolauSakerNeto Ah so you're a synthetic chemist?

@Freddy Drawing mod attention, when thay probably have better stuff to do, is not good.

I'm not sure I could call myself that yet

@DelPate PROBABLY?!

2:23 PM
Gtg guys. See ya.

@DelPate Bye!
@NicolauSakerNeto I know you call yourself Nicolau, but what type of chemist are you?

@DelPate I sorry for that flagging( though i don't remember who was that)

Well, up to now I've been more of a materials scientist than a chemist

Btw, I am just flagging something for the fun of it!!

@DelPate Noooo!
@Freddy We learn from our mistakes.

2:24 PM
@NicolauSakerNeto what do you work on ?

I study materials for solar cells
Up to now I've worked with organic solar cells, not the blue crystalline silicon ones you may be most familiar with

@NicolauSakerNeto Oooh shiny!
Tell me more!

which specific field , i work on Characterization of shape memory alloyss

@Gowtham I think it was you to whom i have flag :P

@Gowtham You're dead!

2:27 PM
pff, let it pass, i think wrong flags dont matter one bit to me or the mods

Not much to say really

@NicolauSakerNeto Why?

Silicon solar cells are starting to become very popular, but there's other possible materials which could make cheaper solar panels, with other desirable properties such as flexibility

Nodding

@NicolauSakerNeto do you work with fabrication of them ?

2:28 PM
The type I've worked with were polymeric organic solar cells, where an organic semiconducting polymer is used to absorb light
I've worked with the fabrication of cells and some novel materials to add to the cells

I never understood semiconductors.

me too

Me three
Semiconductor physics is not trivial

ok , seems a very good and futuristic field ,

@Gowtham Yeah. The guy is one of those white coats... :}

2:31 PM
I think it's quite interesting to be able to turn light into chemical potential energy and then electrical potential energy

It's quite confusing as well.

element or compound that can conduct electricity under some conditions but not others -> semiconductor

The interactions between light and matter are worthy of study

I think it like this way

@MARamezani well, me too , am in same field but oriented towards something else :P

2:32 PM
@Freddy You just love Wikipedia don't you!

@NicolauSakerNeto Do you mean stuff like spectroscopy

@MARamezani though i dont remember wearing white coat yet

BTW @Fred the confusing thing here is some conditions.

@MARamezani YEs :) but why?

Well spectroscopic techniques are important for my field, yes, though that can be said for many others

2:33 PM
@Freddy Where is this world going to?! Loving needs reasons?

@MARamezani he probably meant it for the confusing comment :P

@Gowtham OK.
@Freddy Where is this world going to?! Getting confused needs reasons?

@MARamezani how can someone gets confused without reasons?

@Freddy Easily.
Gets confused

You had reason for that

2:36 PM
I was just checking the log... @ron really does not want to tell us his alter-ego

@Martin Yeah. He thinks one could be one of his students!
That's a valid reason though.

i guess some just like to keep their life a bit more private :)

@Martin Welcome back BTW.
@Gowtham And look even cooler.

Hehe... you would not want to know your professor is procrastinating that much ;)

@Martin now can we discuss textbook-erra whatever?
@Martin Maybe my professors playing minesweeper...

ADG
2:38 PM
Hope this room is active.

well, did you come up with something cool?

It's radioactive.

@ADG shoorrr

ADG
like the one sung by imagine dragons?

@Martin Well, coolity doesn't suffice.

2:39 PM
I saw misconceptions, but that could mean anything
but i like it more then the academic-err

@Martin The point is erratum means typo.
While the Lead question wasn't a typoic.

In academix sciences it has a couple of meanings
usually in conjunction with correction
you might publish something, later see you made a mistake, so you publish an erratum

ADG
i didn't knew there was such a word

@Martin Oooh my Organochem is addictive. I read conjunction as conjugation.

ADG
when i read the hot meta posts, i imagined/thought what it could mean

2:42 PM
@ADG it's latin, basically

ADG
hopefully the context helped me know wat it meant

@ADG Everything Latin is weird. You're not alone...

An erratum or corrigendum (plurals: errata, corrigenda) (comes from Latin: errata corrige) is a correction of a published text. An erratum is most commonly issued shortly after its original text is published. Patches to security issues in a computer program are also sometimes called errata. As a general rule, publishers issue an erratum for a production error (i.e., an error introduced during the publishing process) and a corrigendum for an author's error. == Errata sheets == The Chicago Manual of Style describes an errata sheet as follows: "Errata, lists of errors and their corrections, may take...
That gave me a good idea, i hope

ADG
OK

ADG
2:44 PM
BTW I am very unhappy someone just downvoted all my sample questions on Area 51 :(

@Martin Hmm...

in the same sense as reference request
dedoubtification request?

@Martin But ref-request is meta thingy!

ADG
@Martin it shouldn't be any tag in the first place,it is very unusefl.
I wondr if someone would use it.

textbook-erratum is also a meta tag
one of the few that i believe are okay

ADG
2:45 PM
How can meta be connected to it.

What about concept-correction?

ADG
Because rather than being so stupid pointing out mistakes in other's works looks unprofessional maybe, and it could rather be simply asked as a clarification for chemistry's concept.
Oh i noticed @MARamezani matches me here :D

misinformation , fallacies ?

Fallacies!
I like that.

2:47 PM
But it's not always misinformation.
Sometimes they get confused about it.

ADG
K

there is a flaw in the correction part

basicly this tag could be applied to everything

ADG
@Martin then i would prefer only erratum.

2:48 PM
@ADG I think it's pretty much failed, sorry. You need 60 followers to like what you proposed.

It should be specific about printed stuff

@Martin Hmm...

errata maybe ?

or the exam questions

ADG
@MARamezani the thing is the people not following it can also downvote
maybe some haters just did that

2:49 PM
@Gowtham Well that's just plural and each question should ideally deal with one error at the time...

ADG
Don't know why the earlier questions that I made (I regret deleting them) had upcotes instead.

@ADG But the point is, pointing it on meta.SE means there are no lovers, even if there are haters.

ADG
@Martin yes every question should not be "broad"

@ADG exactly

ADG
@MARamezani OK so you mean?

2:50 PM
@ADG It fails.

ADG
@MARamezani i'm very undecisive as to what to do now.

@ADG I don't wanna hint. I could be wrong.

ADG
someone said me this:

@ADG basically if people liked your idea , they would have upvoted , i think not too many users like the whole solving problems for others, except math and few others

Sorry guys gotta go again, stay creative... push back any ideas to the meta post

ADG
2:52 PM
> What do you want.
> You really need to change the mindset about the site
> Think meta-testing questions.

@ADG Not worth your time I guess.

good night!

@user223679 Hullo!

ADG
I'm haveing problem to understand above three lines (Lang Prob)
@user223679 i'm thinking of making such site without SE engine.

@ADG I don't get the third line. Link?

Matlab nahi hai!! @ADG

ADG
@user223679 accha tu abhi kya kar raha hai, aur yahan tak kaise aaya

@MARamezani i think it probably means to post questions on meta or something and see what responses he may get

ADG
@user223679 jaan bujh kar hindi mein baat karna mujhe acha lagta hai :D

@Gowtham Hmm, yeah.

ADG
2:56 PM
@Gowtham aur, abhi bhi hindi bolta hai kya?

@ADG نیه بله دانیشیسیز؟

Q: Clarification regarding conceptual doubts

ADGAccording to one of the answers to my post: Physics.SE is not a homework help site, it is not meant to be a resource to teach people physics, and it is not a resource intended to help right conceptual misconceptions in students. When it was originally created, this site was meant to be a plac...

@MARamezani Hello

ADG
@user223679 accha pakda, idhar se hi vo haters aaye they

Speak English please. I'm not familiar with Hindu/Hindi or whatever this language is.
@user223679 Homework questions always slip away, if you're talking about that.

ADG
@MARamezani the messages are not so useful anyways (aimed at specific persons already)

2:57 PM
@ADG I don't think they're personal attacks.
At least the ones that talk.

ADG
kaun?

I always see those messages to downvoted proposals.
Nothing personal.

ADG
@MARamezani which, pls state them.
@Martin still here?
@ManishEarth are you free?

As I said, its not worth your time @ADG

@ADG That SE isn't for homework.

ADG
2:59 PM
@user223679 explain
@MARamezani do you see a "Physics Homework Site" with 18 followers?
