Hello everyone !
it's been so long

do we have a canonical "unable to locate package X" question?

Perhaps

A: Where can I find Software for Unix/Linux that does X?

GillesThe first place to look is your distribution's package list. That's where you'll find the easiest-to-install programs. Some package management tools provide advanced ways of searching it. On Debian and Debian-based distributions (e.g. Ubuntu), you can search package descriptions with apt-cache ...

@StephenKitt no, I'm talking about the apt error

@Braiam yeah, I know which question you're referring to
a general answer to the specific apt error wouldn't be easy to write, there are quite a few possible causes
I was thinking more of the "install codeblocks" answer

I think we could cover the 6 more common ones

we probably could

Hello
I would like to use openCV to write some programs in C++ in my linux mint machine. However I have no clue at all how to setup my IDE to use the latest version of openCV3.x every time. I downloaded openCV from github but it contains no instructions.

I am using code::blocks.
Could anybody give some guidelines or whatsoever.
I am an absolute noob when it comes to using linux.

@trilolil first, you know how to use the keyboard and mouse, so you aren't actually a "noob" using linux... second, the only mayor difference between linux and everything else is the path scheme, so as long as you can find an article telling you how to do this, just take into account the possible path changes and you will be fine, you don't even have to append "linux" to your query, just "code::blocks opencv version" should be ok

trying to follow this guide for windows: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/10876052/how-to-compile-a-program-using-opencv-2-4-3-with-codeblocks

They are speaking about dll files for windows. How does this step work for linux users?
step 2.

@trilolil that's not a "step", just the things you need...

I don't find the dll files.

the steps are below

2:32 PM
@Braiam I don't have it.

you don't need them

@Braiam I am speaking about step 2. "2. Add the OpenCV libraries needed for linking"

you need "OpenCV libraries needed for linking", not all libraries are dll's
just follow the steps, it should work if you use the correct paths

@Braiam This is what I am speaking about. Which files should I select?
They only select dll files. I don't find any in my case (maybe because I dont use windows). So what should I select instead?

all the files that are on the /lib directory!

2:35 PM
@Braiam in the zip file I downloaded from github there is no /lib ...

... because you downloaded the sources, not the compiled one...

@Braiam ...to be sure to always have the newest release.
without any bugs or whatsoever.

actually, sources are more likely to have bugs... if you are so lost, it's better to just install opencv from the repositories of your distribution as it's unlikely that you need the latest

@Braiam I do research on mathematical algorithms in computer vision so the chances I need the latest version is real.
@Braiam what I downloaded from opencv.org and on github: both seem to be non-compiled as neither of them have a /lib folder.

It will happen, soon™
