They have to come up with variations (read: misspellings) because the site won't let two questions have the exact same title.

For the record, how many chars in my name are invisible or like a cute rectangle in your browser(s) guys? CC @JimR @Snail @Dam @Cat @Cop
@snailboat We are very proficient at that.

On Chrome on Windows 10, they are all visible. On Chrome ("mobile") on Android, only the first is available.
Available or visible. I'm an old man and it's my bedtime. O.O

Your name looks fine on my phone and on my computers.

Yay!

4:17 PM
Wow, that shower question went from -2 to 0 in the last hour.

4:28 PM
@ⱮᏁℛ All three of them look fine on my computer.

Yay x 2!

Anonymous
@ⱮᏁℛ x? Or ×?

@snailboat I have just cleared my chrome data thingy so I don't have anything in porkchat right now other than "ಠ_ಠ".
I'll prolly add them later today.
So yeah, it's a \times, not an ecks.

@snailboat Ah, that reminds me of the use of crosses and circles in Japanese for incorrect and correct answers.

@ⱮᏁℛ Yay that it displays fine for snailboat, but not for me?

4:37 PM
@JimReynolds Mmmmaybe. Hides

That's .... that is just hurtful.

@JimReynolds Let's sob together.

What has she done that I haven't, besides not thinking of ways to see you dead about, oh, 400 times a day.
O.0

@JimReynolds @Snail vehicles always deserve special treatment.

It's not right!

4:40 PM
I know. It doesn't have any directions.

I want to report this to a room moderator. Whom do I contact, please?

What would you like to report today?

@JimReynolds Type the words (at)Dam. I think you'll be disappointed though.

@CopperKettle Wonderful!

@JimR's dramatic today.

4:44 PM
An ... oh never mind! You're all in this together!!

@JimReynolds Yes, and no tinfoil for you!

I'm going to my nightMARs now. Guhnyte.

Good night!

> have to, must
Have to is NOT an auxiliary verb (it uses the verb have as a main verb). We include have to here for convenience.
Hmm... If have to is NOT an auxiliary verb, what is it?

@DamkerngT. A "NOT an auxiliary verb".

Hah!

Anonymous
@DamkerngT. There are several points to address there.

Anonymous
First, how do we know if something is an auxiliary verb?

5:08 PM
@Cop will get the joke.

Anonymous
By looking at its behavior in a sentence, right? Subject-auxiliary inversion, for example.

Oh, yes!
Hmm... but have can be tricky.
Because it behaves differently in BrE and AmE sometimes.

Anonymous
True!

Anonymous
But we can't treat BrE as a single unit there.

Anonymous
Most BrE speakers treat have like AmE speakers do most of the time.

5:09 PM
nods

Anonymous
It's just that BrE has greater variation.

Anonymous
Another problem is: is have to a verb of any kind? Or is it, perhaps, a verb followed by the infinitive marker to?

Anonymous
Just because the first word in a string is a verb doesn't mean the entire string is also a verb.

> We have to do this? --> Do we have to do this?
That seems to support the assertion (that have to is not an auxiliary verb).

Anonymous
Right. But: %Have we to do this? The % symbol indicates that for some speakers, this is a valid example.

Anonymous
5:11 PM
(I'd put it in superscript, but I can't.)

@snailboat Very well understood! :D

If you turn to page 40, you'll find a neat summary.

Yes, but only in the Kindle format.

I wonder if I can go to a page in that book.

@CopperKettle Huh
Is that a Shaolin CopperKettle?

Argh! I can't!
Only some kindle books include both pages and locations.

Eh, so you have a book that you can't read?

This one only has location markers.

5:13 PM
@ⱮᏁℛ Oh, that's the Russian letter zh

Anonymous
@DamkerngT. I found it on Google Books!

It looks cool.

(It has 9042 locations on my reader.)

A-ha! 3.3 -- Thanks!

5:14 PM
Zhe (Ж ж; italics: Ж ж) is a letter of the Cyrillic script. It commonly represents the voiced palato-alveolar sibilant /ʒ/ (listen), or the somewhat similar voiced retroflex sibilant /ʐ/ (listen) in Russian and in other languages, like the pronunciation of ⟨s⟩ in "treasure". Zhe is romanized as ⟨zh⟩ or ⟨ž⟩. == History == It is not known how the character for Zhe was derived. No similar letter exists in Greek, Latin or any other alphabet of the time, though there is some graphic similarity with its Glagolitic counterpart Zhivete ⟨Ⰶ⟩ (Image: ) which represents the same sound. However, the origin...

so treasure is really treaжure

Much like CGEL, the section numbers start over in each chapter. So it's chapter 3, section 3.3.

Oh, it's actually 3.3.3. -- Yes!

Anonymous
Threes all around.

It's really cool.

LOL

I like the ж character, being in an emoticon or not. :D

Anonymous
In general, would you prefer chapter and section numbers or page numbers?

Anonymous
5:16 PM
I usually give page numbers.

To exphand this cultural exchange, I'll mention that жопа (zhopa) is the Russian word for "arse" (one of a score of words, really)

Anonymous
@CopperKettle And now we know™!

@snailboat Because pages are difficult in several ebooks, I think chapter+section numbers are more helpful.

Anonymous
@DamkerngT. I see!

5:17 PM
@snailboat +1 for the TM

I don't know why they don't allow us to switch between the ePUB-like and book-list format when we buy an ebook.

Anonymous

@snailboat Ah, it's got TMed just now!

Anonymous
@DamkerngT. I have some ebooks, but I'm really much happier with paper.

nods -- Though ebooks have some advantages, I still like paper books better.

Anonymous
5:19 PM
They definitely do have some advantages. I have some books in both formats.

The term "static have" (also "dynamic have") is quite interesting!

Anonymous
@DamkerngT. Yes, they are used because the relevant meanings of have are stative and dynamic.

@snailboat . . . the more you look like a comic shooting star?

I meant to type ja into an empty tab, which would give me Japanese.SE, but I managed to type it into chat instead.

@ⱮᏁℛ Nein!

OMG, this is bad. Snail is actually secretly affiliated with Germans.

nods -- The first time I saw it, I wondered why didn't they use a checkmark and a cross?, but then I realized that they may have used their convention long before they met people from the West.

5:24 PM
BTW are you using the new mobile UI @Snail?

Anonymous
I'm on a real computer right now.

@snailboat Oh, I think Apple co. took that as an insult.

Anonymous
Well, an iPhone is basically a toy computer.

Anonymous
I like my phone. But the toy aspect is definitely there.

I'm on a toy.
:D

5:31 PM
@DamkerngT. So are you using the new toy UI?

That's one thing I still have to figure out. I mean, the mobile interface (via web) still looks the same to me. Do I use the wrong URL?

Anonymous
Yeah, what new UI?

Anonymous
Is there a meta post about it?

I meant the chat though.

Q: Test the new mobile chat!

balphaRemember 2010, when smartphones looked like this?             Back then, we created a mobile version of chat, so that people could use the bare minimum of features on those and similar phones. Well waddayaknow, suddenly it's 2016, smartphones for some reason now look like this:             –...

So are you guys tasting the new new mobile chat? @Snail @Dam

Let's see...
going to switch to "mobile" mode...

5:38 PM
Guessing @Dam's reaction

I think it doesn't work on iPad.

:/

There is not even the Pref button!

A: What will happen when all the possible answers are given to all possible questions?

mmyersJon Skeet will put some ice on his wrists. That was a lot of typing.

@DamkerngT. You have to change it here: chat.stackexchange.com/users/43955?tab=prefs

Anonymous
@ⱮᏁℛ It'd be interesting to try comparing that without Hot Network Questions.

@ⱮᏁℛ I see all... I have a Mac.

Grrr! it just doesn't work for me (on my old iPad).

@Catija Then what's with people whining about my characters?

Anonymous
I like Macs.

Anonymous
5:47 PM
I have one too! :-)

Anonymous
They're very different from iPhones.

@ⱮᏁℛ Dunno... Macs have all (or at least most) foreign keyboard text preloaded.... I can see them fine on my Laptop and on my iPhone.

@snailboat Yay!

Anonymous
Oh, I see, we changed topics and I missed it.

5:48 PM
Eh, could have looked crappier.

I think lots of PCs do not.

On this old iPad, the first character of your name is a square, BTW. @ⱮᏁℛ

@snailboat Sorry! I was responding to @ⱮᏁℛ 's ping from a while ago. I didn't even look to see what you were talking about now.

Anonymous
@ⱮᏁℛ If you really want to change your name now, it can be done. But if you want to keep it this way, don't let me stop you :-)

andyw on August 04, 2011

Of course since we all know Jon Skeet does have various powers, I will move onto unanswered questions, whether a users reputation makes them receive more upvotes for answers. I’ve seen this theory mentioned in multiple places (see any of the comments to Jon Skeet’s answer that are along the lines of “If this was posted by someone other than Jon Skeet, would this have gotten as many upvotes?”). It is similar to the question we were supposed to address in the currently dormant Polystats project as well. …

So yeah, the topic was
@snailboat Can it? I thought I should wait for a month.

5:50 PM
@ⱮᏁℛ A moderator can change it for you.

A mod in Japanese.SE?

Anonymous
I can only do that if you actually sign up for Japanese.SE.

@snailboat I did! Yay!
Now let's serial-upvote Snail

Anonymous
@ⱮᏁℛ Do you want me to change it? If so, to what?

@snailboat Yes, please. :) To "IͶΔ".

Anonymous
5:54 PM
@ⱮᏁℛ It is done :-)

@snailboat Thank you!
(づ。◕‿‿◕。)づ

But why INΔ?

People in the Periodic Table call me "Ina", since that was part of my reversed name when it was my username. :)
Reason 2: I am not pingable in Android.
Reason 3: All the characters are too common to look like rectangles.
So tell me @Dam: Can you now ping me by typing I and pressing tab?

I'm back to my computer now, so I sure can.

No, I mean it doesn't come up with typing @?

6:04 PM
Oh, it came up! :D
But in this room, you are still ⱮᏁℛ.

What?!
But I typed a normal I!
Oh.

Chat should catch up soon.

That's how the new mobile interface looks on my old iPad.
It acted rather weird. I couldn't even type anything because the input box was way down off the display of my device.

@DamkerngT. That's not the new mobile UI to me.

Trust me. It's new. The new top bar was way up there (again, off-screen).
I had to use my computer to change the setting back to the old interface before I could continue using the chat from my old iPad.

How does it look like in your jet's screen?

I suppose it'd look like everyone else's. :D

Anonymous
Mine had a little thingy in the upper-left corner which, I discovered, I could click to get a menu. And from that menu, I could pick the non-mobile interface to chat.

Anonymous
But now I'm trying it again, and the menu thingy seems to be gone.

Anonymous
Ah, it somehow lost my setting!

Anonymous
I had to pick it again.

6:17 PM
@snailboat I had a change to click on that once, and then I wasn't able to make it come back anymore!
I guess the browser on my old iPad is too old.

@snailboat Yeah that's a bit annoying.

Let's see if I have better luck on a newer one.
Ah... It looks pretty good!
I wish I had an easier way to switch the interface back to the desktop mode, without having to access that thumbdrop menu in the upper-left corner.
Because if I opt for the new mobile interface, the chat will redirect me to the new interface automatically, and it's not functioning on my old iPad 2.
So, basically, I can't chat from Safari on my old iPad if I opt for the new interface.

Well, @Dam.
On meta.SE.

nods -- Will do that later.
@ⱮᏁℛ Hmm... The reply feature needs a little tweak, too, I think. I have to fight my soft keyboard to access to the message input box when I want to reply.
And it's virtually impossible to edit a message to reply to another message.

@DamkerngT. Good point.

6:29 PM
But if I'm not mistaken, the font looks somewhat better than before.
Hey, I can star my own messages via the new interface!

What? LOL

The history feature is not supported, though.
@ⱮᏁℛ I can do that by pinning a message and then unpin it.
Let's see if I can do that again.

@DamkerngT. You can do that on Desktop too.
And you can't cancel the star.

I don't think I can do that on my computer. Let's see...
Oh, right!
Wait, what? I can't cancel them!

Yeah, a moderator clears your action.
Seems some SE mods are jobless. :P

6:37 PM
I just deleted one of those pin-starred messages.

@GoDucks I just had a moderator change my name into something more pingable. I hope we can put this behind us and start new and fresh and I think we started off on the wrong foot. I apologize for my ignorance and hope the apology's accepted. — IͶΔ 11 secs ago
I suddenly feel so much better now.

6:56 PM
So @Dam, you need to ping me with an I now, right?

@IͶΔ Yes.

I am on an android phone, using the mobile site, and I don't know if @IND (which is the closest I can get to your username) will ping you. Maybe it's the browser I'm using. I do not get any suggested usernames for anybody when I type the symbol used to ping people. I have to type out all usernames after the symbol, which means those using a non-English letters are unpingable. I only use the dolphin browser, perhaps other android browsers are different. — GoDucks 4 mins ago
Dah, what the hell

But I only tested it in the chat.

7:24 PM
Hullo @GAD3R! Welcome to LO!
