@Upgoat You are confused a lot. Is that a coincidence?

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ @CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ @MᴀʀsUʟᴛᴏʀ @Quill @DrGreenEggsandIronMan @anyoneWhoKnowsOrCaresAboutChedr pls halp wriet chedr docs
@Bálint yes i am gaot

@Upgoat Cheddar docs? You mean the fast introduction, or the full blown docs?

full blown docs

@Upgoat Where should I learn about the language?

y is that starred

7:04 PM
@Upgoat Stars are pretty

@Upgoat Peace, love, and free software, man.

@Bálint ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ idk no docs, that's why i need people familiar with chedr to halp wriet docs

@Upgoat Are switches done?

look at the proposal on GH for more info

@Upgoat BTW, because the language is very similar to any other modern langauge (C++, java, C# and friends), it was pretty easy, to memorize everything in it

7:06 PM
they are targeted at v0.1 which is after v0.3 (which is being prepped as we speak), and v0.4 (which is being worked on atm, should be out be end of week)
@Bálint :D okay that's good

@Bálint It never occurred to me that C heddar was a C derivative until you mentioned it

@trichoplax I don't think that occured to @Upgoat either

I specifically noted that in the docs I think ._.

Can anyone give me some guidance on golfing c#? Looking for some clear rules on giving method only vs full class answers

> Cheddar has C-style comments

7:08 PM
@Phaeze That's not related to C# golfing, it's a ppcg default, that you can give methods

> There syntax is highly resemblant of their C counterpart
>_> wrong tehre

@Upgoat I mean the Cheddar

> Cheddar introduces a blend of syntax styles from existing languages. Inspiration is derives from C, Go, and Swift.

@Bálint How do using statements fall into that though

@Bálint oh I think I made that pun yesterday

7:09 PM
@Upgoat Cheddar
@Phaeze statements?

Can I have a using Alias as part of a method only ie using S=string;

@Bálint I think @Phaeze was wondering whether if the code requires an import-style statement, if a function-only answer is valid.

@Phaeze You count the usings as you would in a regular program, and you should be allowed to use them in the same ways as you would for a regular program

Q: Default for Code Golf: Program, Function or Snippet?

Martin EnderOne of the things many (new?) users forget to specify in code-golf challenges is whether the answers should provide a full program or a function (or even just a snippet). For most such things, we have defaults in the tag wiki (like scoring by bytes), but not for this. The conclusion in chat was ...

Q: How to compile/score answers in .NET languages, specifically VB.NET

JensI recently submitted an answer to a code-golf question in VB.NET, and one comment pointed out that I could omit two System. statements from the code, because it would compile fine without them. See here: http://codegolf.stackexchange.com/a/63945/20520 The problem here is, that the code would no...

7:12 PM
Ok so my answer could be using thing;using thing2; string(string m){return m;}

@Phaeze Yeah
@Upgoat You should write about classes next time, don't misunderstand me, functional programming isn't bad, but it's a bit....meh.

@Bálint ?

Not everyone finds them meh - maybe there should be the opportunity to vote...

@Upgoat In the docs, you don't mention classes iirc
@trichoplax You can use cheddar with both

because it's not finished and classes are a very large topic. doing rn
^^

7:15 PM
@Upgoat BTW
> _ can be used as a seperator within numbers, designed to function as a serpeator, they are ignored by the parser and act like comments, ignored by even the parser.
I don't want to count the errors in this sentence

>_> pls submit fixed version tehn
gaot has hoves remember ;-;

With grammar like that, no wonder the parser ignores them...

@Bálint wait where is that?

oh ignore getting started

that is not even a thing, thats just tmeporar
> Starting at
$999.99
oh wow great deal the gaot can definetly affored it

Some temporary things last longer than some permanent things

Hoof pedicure!

@Upgoat I tried, but that sentence is unignorable
@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 ?

It's OK, I can't imagine trying to verbally program in a golfing language anyway ... "Squiggly thing that looks like a backwards Euro sign with a line. No. No. Backspace. No. The other one."

7:19 PM
@Upgoat what makes you think I know how to use cheddar?

btw ditched := with =
@DrGreenEggsandIronMan ;-; idk

@Upgoat Oh thank goodness.

Jun 16 at 5:05, by Dr Green Eggs and Iron Man
@Upgoat I'm slightly offended you didn't want me to be a cheddar beta tester.
to be beta tester you need to know language?

@Upgoat Noo, := looks more mathematic-like

7:20 PM
should I allow both then?
idk
halp

:= is dumb imo

especially with functions:

@Upgoat How do you write var i : Number = 10 now?

Idk, I figured I'd just read through the docs and try things.

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan The non-existent docs*

7:21 PM
foo :==> (a, b) a + b

Exactly, that's my point

@Bálint just like tjat

@Upgoat Okay, maybe change it

@Bálint they exist just need more info
that's why i need halp to finish

@Upgoat Hoof pedicure :d chases him

7:22 PM
foo ==>(a, b) a + b
@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 ;-; y u chaes gaot
gaot wil fal of clif

@Upgoat So, if I understand correctly, you need us to write about a language, we don't know, and we don't have resources to learn from

@Upgoat there's no clif

@Bálint some people here know the language so I'm pinging whoever knows. I never pinged you as you don't speak ches
@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 watch vido

@Poke I can understand 0 of the things you just said.

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan ._.

7:27 PM
@Poke Their spelling imparement is probably from the old avocad meme.

Mar 17 at 3:41, by Vihan
@Dennis when you have hooves instead of hands, it's hard to click the small bookmarks button so I just type it

@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 How does that differ from the current avocad meme?

hooves =\= avocad @zʏᴀʙiɴ101 ಠ_ಠ

I think it's already difficult enough for the English-as-second-language folks to read and process English as-is, without needing to resort to additional speech styles.

@Poke There's no avocad meme right now.

7:28 PM
Debatable.

@Dennis locked the Many Memes post, thinking it will kill all of the current memes.

Why'd you ping him?

@TimmyD gaots speak dialect. Y u so discimnate ;-;

@Upgoat You're the #1 reason to the bad signal:noise ratio, here, take this award

7:30 PM
@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 little did he know that dank memes never die

@Upgoat ಠ್ಕಠ

@Bálint that is runing the signal : noise ratio, not me ಠ_ಠ

@Upgoat Speaking about signal:noise ratio ruines the signal:noise ratio

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan I refer to him.

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan Why did you remove the hello world tag from the Rube Goldberg question? The tag seems to mean that your program produces a short constant text, not that it exactly outputs hello world (see this for example)

and another and another and another I could do this for days

@FryAmTheEggman Oh, OK, I was not aware of that.
We should probably update the tag:
> A challenge that involves making a Hello world program.

Alright, I was just wondering if we had a bunch of cleanup to do :P
Yeah the description is not very good lol. A lot of our tags have pretty bad descriptions...

I suppose now that I think about it, if it was purely for exactly "hello world" only one challenge should be tagged with it.

We need a bot, wich counts the messages containing a phrase for every user, and outputs them in a sorted list

Similarly, I think rosetta-code is only supposed to be used when it is the winning criterion, but I think they are mostly off topic now so idk what to do with that...

7:37 PM
Conversations like this would be much easier
@TimmyD English is my third langauge, imagine how hard it is to read leet. :/

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan though I don't think we really need a Hello, World tag, what does it bring to a chalenge?

third? that's impressive. I can barely speak one.

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan Third. I speak German and English as foreign languages
And I started with English

@Bálint third? O_o English is my second language too after bleeeeeett

What's your native language?

7:39 PM
And technically I only started learning english 3/4 year ago
@DrGreenEggsandIronMan Hungarian

@Upgoat I think it's supposed to indicate the challenge has a simple final task (printing a constant string) but has some restriction or whatever that adds to the challenge
Whether or not that makes sense/is good idk but that's what I'd guess anyway :P

@FryAmTheEggman printing constant string -> kolmogorov

@FryAmTheEggman Well any challenge that actually has to do with the specific string "Hello, World!" would be a kolmogorov question and constant-string kolmogorovs would be closed anyway

@Bálint kolmogorov is generally for strings that have patterns that can be used to compress it.

No, the point of kolmogorov complexity is that the printing of the string (optimally) is hard, in hello world printing the string would be easy

7:41 PM
We need a new category

@Upgoat not always. There a lots of constant kolmogorov challenges that are open.

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan not unless they have some interesting pattern. It's the same reason song-lyric questions are closed as off-topic of rickroll one
@Bálint O_o you learn fast

@Upgoat Only technically, in reality, I speak english for years now

@Upgoat yes, but they're still constant.

Q: 24 and 12 Hour Times

Helka HombaWrite a program or function with no input that prints or returns this string of 24-hour and 12-hour times: 00:00 12:00am 01:00 1:00am 02:00 2:00am 03:00 3:00am 04:00 4:00am 05:00 5:00am 06:00 6:00am 07:00 7:00am 08:00 8:00am 09:00 9:00am 10:00 10:00am 11:00 11:00am 12:00 12:00pm 13:00 ...

Is a good example

7:43 PM
@DrGreenEggsandIronMan yeah, but because there's a pattern. A question such as print "Hello, World!" but reversed! is not anything new and would be closed

Just bought portal. :D

@BaldBantha :D 1 or 2?

1 to start with

@Upgoat agreed, but the important distinction is the lack of a pattern, not that it's constant.

7:44 PM
yes, which is why I don't see the need of a hello-world tag, it's not needed

@BaldBantha Nice! It's a fantastic game.

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan I liked that challenge. It was weird that it turned out to be shorter in PowerShell to just brute-force the list rather than use built-in date/time functions.

I think you guys ignore me

hi balint :)

7:45 PM
@Bálint I would be very opposed to that tag.

@Bálint >_> no we don't! :)
^^ all questions under it would be closed pretty much

Especially since we don't encourage that type of challenge.

Hello @phase!

PHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASE

I have edit privileges yeah! \o/

7:46 PM
@Bálint \o/ congrats!

@Upgoat There are 42 questions tagged right now.

@TimmyD Agreed. I generated purely from a kolmogorov complexity stand point, and I was disappointed everyone could beat it just by using date builtins. -_-

@Upgoat yo

I feel that 42 is a little low, and there are likely some more that should be tagged that currently aren't.

@TimmyD None of them really benifit from the tag though. Most just use "Hello, World" as the target string to be printed

7:48 PM
I came to complain about the **Signal:Noise** section of http://ppcg.github.io/chatiquette/

Not only is half this chat filled with ಠ_ಠ, but I think it should be encouraged. I find it appalling that behavior like this is looked down upon.

e.g. this question doesn't need it for the same reason there isn't a "Twisted!" tag

Well, then why have both a and ?

@TimmyD Those aren't the same

7:49 PM
^ yeah, fractal questions describe the category of theq uestion

@phase there's a balance. We don't want either extreme, and serious talk anyways takes precedence, even though being silly is fine.

Right, and neither are and

+1 Idk how to spell it either

@phase It's not like the mods will insta-nuke any ಠ_ಠ though. I guess it's just so they aren't mile long caret chains

^ mod nuke pls

7:50 PM
@DrGreenEggsandIronMan Extreme or nothing ಠ_ಠ

fractal is a self-similar object, graphical output is putting pixels on the screen (with magic)

@Upgoat a while ago I placed a single caret and dennis nuked it.

@Upgoat I think this chat is fine with ಠ_ಠ ಠ_ಠ ಠ_ಠ ಠ_ಠ and ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ ^

I'd caret, but idk

7:51 PM
@Bálint Right. Just like "Hello, World!" is a simple, deterministic set of characters. It could overlap with Kolmogorov-complexity challenges, but doesn't need to.

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan For the record, I think that a challenge that outputs a 13-character long string made up mostly of letters absolutely qualifies for the tag, regardless of the actual string.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ A lone caret by itself and it was the only message nuked?

@El'endiaStarman yes.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ @ Dennis ಠ_ಠ

@phase I'm fine with that until it gets in the way of actually holding a discussion.

7:52 PM

@MartinEnder Yes, that's it precisely.

@MartinEnder OK. Someone can edit that tag back in. (I would, but mobile)

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan also the reason I didn't tag it rosetta-stone, is that that's a winning criterion (scored by most languages used only)

eeyyy another 3 more downvote no comment!

I just now downvoted because I disagree with the premise.

7:55 PM
@Geobits so perhaps it would be more benifical to describe why you disagree?

@Upgoat I don't know, I posted multiple graphical output challenges with good feedback

you apparently did just that
I'm basically stating the samething as the other answers but elaboritng differently and neither has 5 downvotes
I'm feeling this is just bandwagnonibf

> An objective primary winning criterion, so that it is possible to indisputably decide which entry should win.

@Upgoat While yes, popcons need to have a valid spec, it feels like you're saying that you can just tack [pop-con] onto anything with a valid spec and that's cool. I don't want to see "Find the Nth whatever number. POPCON!"

soo.... you don't want pop cons.

@Geobits no...

I'm saying people can't just say "output image of goat"... oh this isn't valid code-golf? POPCON

ftfy

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ see my above message to Bálint

@Upgoat Right, but you don't really go into what makes a good popcon at all. All it says is "It needs to have a spec"

@Upgoat I read the damn thing.

@Geobits you're saying pop-cons shouldn't have a spec?

7:58 PM
No. I agree they should. But not everything with a spec should be a popcon, and you don't mention that at all.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I specifically gave examples. I don't see how you cannot see that I'm claiming some pop-cons are on-topic
@Geobits I'm saying pop-cons should have a spec, I'm not saying everything with a spec is a valid pop-con

> Subjectivity is perfectly fine as long as there is still some sort of objective specification

Apparently language-specific chatrooms are all the rage these days, so in case anyone wants to discuss using or golfing Retina or wants to suggest feature requests...

@Upgoat when you mention your two examples, i wasn't sure which one was better, you seem to be indicating the add 2 numbers one, i disagree

Not everything should be subjective, that's all I'm saying.

@Upgoat You go all over the place in that post. I really don't know what to take from it.

> (both are bad, but one is better)
idk I'm just pissed cause it feels like people are A) bandwagoning B) not reading the post C) downvoting without reason

So uh... Upgoat's frustration initially was not why it was downvoted but more why no one commented

sorry that you feel that way

and in the time that we've been discussing it here
no one has commented on the post itself

8:00 PM
why should we?

because I specifically brought it up and made a big deal :/

Because there should be context to a downvote

I hear that a lot. "People are downvoting for bad reasons." Most people seem to feel that way, but that doesn't make it true.

this is the context

here in chat, yes

8:01 PM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ it provides no benifit to the consensus if people just downvote without context or reason. It doesn't bring anything besides a pissed goat

but no one has tagged the question

@Poke @ Upgoat They're anonymous for a reason. I'd just quit SE if I was forced to comment on every vote.

next week when i see Upgoat's answer, i'm not going to have this context

@Upgoat I mean, why should we comment. We're discussing it here...

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ because a very large portion of users do not frequent this chat

8:02 PM
@Upgoat well it brings the consensus that people disagree with you (unless your're talking about the bandwagoning, but shrug)

@Upgoat this conversation would've been 10x less productive if it had been in the comments, and would've eventually been directed to chat anyhow

@Geobits that's fine for e.g. main. But on a post where votes determine the consensus it's a good idea to have some context. If we just downvoted every new user's challenge that was off-topic without reason I doubt we'd have very many actives on PPCG at all

@Upgoat I generally do comment on new users' posts, and point out things. You're not new, and I assumed you could handle it without complaining. It can't possibly be the first time, right?

especially now considering it has -6 downvotes. If I were to just walk past it, I would probably be like "hey it has 6 downvotes..." I'm probably missing something if I'm upvoting

8:05 PM
It only has -6 because you linked it to give it more attention, knowing people already disagreed with it.

@Geobits well yes, on main I'd understand but for this I have no idea what, or why people are disagreeing with

Change perspective

@Geobits I linked it because I wanted to know if someone would bother to explain because I wouldn't be surprised if someone who disagrees is in this chat
I don't mind the downvotes I mind the lack of context and what I feel is bandwagoning

But you can't really be surprised when more people vote on it as a result. That's not "bandwagoning", that's drawing attention to it.
I read it and disagreed, so I downvoted and told you why.
You assuming that people are blindly voting or just messing with you (or whatever) is crazy.

Whoa, PowerShell beat CJam...

8:08 PM
@Geobits The reason I felt it was bandwagoning is that the main point of the answer was very similar to the others. I highly doubt someone would disagree with my answer and yet agree with the others

@TimmyD not for long

@MartinEnder Hah.

@Upgoat I was the second downvoter. Although I'm strongly in favour of voters having the right to anonymity (to ensure unbiased votes) in this case I'm happy to announce which way I voted. I thought about also commenting, but the topic is subtle enough that I didn't think I could do it justice in a comment, so I'm drafting an answer instead. I don't feel the answer is in the same spirit as the other two (which I have upvoted). The subtle differences are the problem with discussing pop cons...

That's not exactly the takeaway I got from it. More like it's a caret and other things.

@phase I don't think ಠ_ಠ affects the signal to noise ratio much (it's only 3 characters). I see no problem with using it, as long as it isn't wildly overused. I find large images and gifs more noisy since they can scroll off an interesting conversation. I'm not against them either if they are occasional and of interest. We seem to have a lot of pets though...
@TimmyD I learned this yesterday, and almost posted it here...

8:24 PM
This is a caret ‸

And so is ^. You just put it on the next line down.

Lies.

The way it's used here, it's definitely a caret. A caret is used on the next line to point up at something to draw attention to it, etc.

@Geobits I got the impression it can be used as a substitute for a caret but its original intention was as a circumflex. I think it's important to enforce usage of the correct symbol for our discouraged chat memes.

@trichoplax I'm pretty sure it made its way onto typewriters as an editing mark (caret).

8:27 PM
@Geobits I strongly disagree, sir, just because.
:p

@Geobits Good point. It would look weird to use an actual caret a line too low here in chat. It's too far away from what it's meant to be pointing at.
@Geobits I meant to mean its purpose in ASCII, but admittedly it has a longer history. I apologise for my original intention of "original intention"

Oh I did too. I meant It was probably on typewriters since they'd use carets a lot when correcting. The implication was that it made it into ASCII because it was on typewriters already. I don't know how true it is, but it seems convincing enough for me to make a claim based on nothing but my gut feeling.

Gut feeling is great provided you can ensure no one has access to evidence
> Officially, this character is referred to as circumflex accent in both ASCII and Unicode terminology (because of its historical use in overstrike)
;)
I'm fairly certain it was also used as a caret on typewriters though
Hard to have multiple similar symbols when every two symbols requires an extra mechanism...

Pfft, gut feeling beats evidence any day. Evidence only says it's true, while guts make it truthy :P

Is that your gut feeling?

8:37 PM
Nope, it's pretty much the definition of truthy.
I have evidence.

I won't believe it unless you put a > in front of it

A sideways caret? What does that do?

It's an orthogonal circumflex, used to indicate the truthiness of subsequent text

@trichoplax Heck, that's why old typewriters didn't have a 1 ... people just used a lowercase l

Could anyone give some feedback on the noisiness/signalicity of this conversation?
@TimmyD Mechanical golfing :)

future languages to have guts as a truthy value

OK now I'm convinced. Also, wow I really did not expect that to be the case!

+1 Truthy (US, colloquial): Only superficially true; that which is asserted or felt instinctively to be true, with no recourse to facts. If you want true or 1, ask for true or 1. If you ask for "truthy", I'll give you something truthy. — Geobits Sep 16 '14 at 2:14
Some poor misguided soul posted that in the meta discussion about it.

@TimmyD idk if cheese has guts though

Now we just need a meta post to state that falsey is objective and truthy is subjective
@Upgoat Cheese has cheese mites. Mites have guts

8:45 PM
ok :/ but that's kinda a stretch

Cheese can also hurt some people's guts.

If the cheese is anywhere near a goat, it probably has other bugs too.
