6:00 PM
I agree, that sounds odd. How is the rest of the assignment worded?

my signature is a* getFirstItem(a* list)

Oh well then you have to return the whole list element.

@undergroundmonorail My initial instinct is return list :P

Or a pointer to the first element.

that's what i thought but it seems so silly

6:01 PM
That is how homework works.

there is another function that when i get to it is going to be return list == NULL so

Well at least they aren't making it a dumb implementation >_>

Well they perhaps just want you to think about how those effing lists work.

> Thank you for your response. Your input is appreciated.
I took a survey! :D

6:05 PM
@Geobits It will end up on the dusty and forgotten pile called "negative user input".

No doubt.
I have one of those too.

@Geobits Now ask them to check activity from IP <your IP here>.
A few minutes again and your password is finally reset!

Nah, I just got it reset. He manually changed it, gave the pw to sign in, and then I changed it while signed in. Whatever, it works now.
Terrible process though.

@Geobits at least you didn't have to tell him your new password

@Geobits After you set a new password, all of your current logins (except the PC which changed the password) will have to be done again. But after that, enjoy online gaming with PlayStation! \o/

6:08 PM
@NathanMerrill I would have a very offensive password if that were the case.

@zyabin101 Yea, just the PS4 and Vita. Not a big deal now that I know the password ;)

@Downgoat call up @RikerW and the entirety of the @jQueryOS/design team.

Are any of you here blogging on Medium?

6:11 PM
I only blog on Large

>.>

I have two blogs on Wordpress.

Medium: Because it's neither rare nor well done.

> while done

Much like my typing. :P

6:14 PM
I prefer medium rare.

> Did you hear about the dwarf fortune teller who escaped from prison? He's a small medium at large.
7

Woah, apparently I've been here for a year. I really want to know how many hours of productivity I've lost during this year. :P

Somehow, I think TNB might have actually increased my productivity on the whole, because I get inspired to make things.

Midget derives from midge (sand fly). Do we really need such a pejorative term on our starboard?

@El'endiaStarman But is it the things other people want you to do? :P

6:18 PM
@EasterlyIrk Considering that I have no job, there is no "other people". :P
Well, except for my parents/fiancée, who want me to keep applying for jobs...

That job with the company with a sucky sucky website failed?

@Dennis TIL. I didn't realize - I was just retelling the joke as I heard it. Please feel free to edit as appropriate.

@EasterlyIrk They wanted skills I didn't really have, but were on my resume. I need to update that on Indeed (which is how they found me).

okai

I also want some skills I don't have.

6:20 PM
^
Like the ability to be productive.

@El'endiaStarman why were they on your resume?

> Today, the word “midget” is considered a derogatory slur. The dwarfism community has voiced that they prefer to be referred to as dwarfs, little people, people of short stature or having dwarfism, or simply, and most preferably, by their given name.

was is basically "I've used this a couple of times" and they were looking for an expert?

@NathanMerrill Languages that I learned a little of, years ago.
I put them under the "Basic" category of skill.

@TimmyD s/midget/dwarf/
@El'endiaStarman Which ones?

6:21 PM
I think PHP and C++.

> PHP
Tell them to use HTML5 instead.
No offense PHP lovers.

But PHP is so easy. You really only need a list of the built-ins.

Err, you know PHP and HTML5 are different kinds of technologies, right?

TIL that the plural spelling "dwarves" was invented by J.R.R. Tolkein

Is Tolkein the plural of Tolkien?

6:24 PM
I remember being confused, years ago, as to why "droids" was being marked as incorrect by Microsoft Word. I gradually learned that George Lucas invented the word as a shortening of "android".

@EasterlyIrk Yeah, because you can easily replace server- with clientside languages. Sorry, but that's a really silly statement.

I use Django instead of PHP server-side, myself.

hey, Mootools is the best

@El'endiaStarman Zorro is faster.

I think Sanji is faster than Zorro

6:26 PM
I think Usain Bolt is faster than Sanji.

not at all

@Rainbolt How else would you spell it?

@flawr "dwarfs"

I love typing on my slow computer, it lags enough to make the letters appear significantly after I type them, making me feel like I can type at hyper-speed
@Rainbolt as well as "elves"
@Rainbolt and elvish and dwarven/ish

I don't think Tolkein invented elves
From Grammarist: "Elf differs from dwarf, which has two plurals—one for the real world (dwarfs) and one for fantasy worlds (dwarves)."

6:29 PM
@Rainbolt Do you know a good place to ask about improving a specific MTG deck? I assume it is off topic on Board and Card Games

TappedOut.net
Here's my Modern deck if you want to provide feedback tappedout.net/mtg-decks/19-01-16-time-warp

Ah. I used to play MTG until I lost my 150 dollar deck. Now I only have xtra cards and a cheap Jesakai Khans of Tarkir store-bought deck
I spent way too much on that game

I thought TO was more just a service for publishing decklists

People can comment on your deck, but you kinda have to promote it yourself
But step one: get it published
Step two: promote

Anyways I have a ton of legacy decks I need to port to modern

6:32 PM
hey, anybody notice unikong?

@Rainbolt ok

Time to release a chalenge I think...

The board and card games chat is probably the best place I know to get feedback. It's a little slow in there.

april fools?
wow

6:33 PM
The SSL extended validation process is a real PITA. It's 2016, why do you need a phonebook entry...

is john skeets featured in unikong?

waits for the puzzling meta post about how their design and graduation was all in preparation for today

@mınxomaτ Really? I don't even have a landline...

It is still 31th of March. I think they are preparing for April Fools.

@zyabin101 It's April 1st somewhere in the world.

6:35 PM
It's been April 1 for 7.5 hours in New Zealand

@epicTCK The player is him.

@Dennis I head to got a new landline connected to the office and pay a premium to get the number in a phonebook. As if EV wasn't expensive enough. I think it's been at least 3 years since I held an actual phonebook in my hands.

figued that

That is fun.
EVERYBODY GO PLAY!!!!
It should be where the community ads normally are.

@mınxomaτ One of paper? I haven't seen those in 15 years...

6:36 PM
Nobody mention the "r" word for a few days

rowr?

rawr?

@Rainbolt Which one?
spell it out.

You mean ruck?

Richard

6:37 PM
@EasterlyIrk Unless you shouldn't. Then don't.

Rainbolt?

It's that brand that kills bugs dead

RAMBO

@Dennis Well, In Germany you will get one every year, no matter what. In my office (Rotherhithe), I've only seen YellowPages once, but then never again.

Round-Up?
No, that's weeds

6:37 PM
Pro tip: Don't google rowr.

@EasterlyIrk call up the @jQueryOS/design team in the AvocadOS chatroom. I made some new icons.

RAID!

@Dennis Good thing I'm not a pro! Brb, Googling rowr.

@Dennis Googled rowr, got this:

I can't post my findings here...

6:38 PM
OMG A CAT IN A SACKBOY COSTUME <dies>

*SHARK

@Dennis I am scarred for life.

That's a shark?

Looks like sackboy to me

6:39 PM
yarn

^^
@Dennis Almost as bad as dogcopter.

@Rainbolt Only if you ignore the shark-teeth.

How do you like the Unikong?

epic

I prefer the Stack Egg.

6:41 PM
@EasterlyIrk I don't get this game. The stupid guy falls down whenever it gets to the unicorn

@flawr Avoid the unicorn, the trolls, and the flame bomb.
Use the gun to shoot the trolls (it doesn't work on the unicorn), and get the things marked out to pick up.

How do you use a gun?

Lol I thought this looked funny so I screen capped it

space
@Hosch250 how many levels are there?
@Hosch250 Never say that. Q_Q

@Rainbolt the third one is hidden as its behind you ?
and its green color

6:43 PM
3. It goes on to 4, 5, etc, but they just start repeating as far as I can tell.

@Hosch250 Why does the ad show the guy riding the unicorn then? Where is the logic in that?

Because it is S(tupid) Exchange?

> Your current rep is 4790.

I hit 6 before getting bored.

6:44 PM
They give special credits to Jon Skeet.

@Optimizer

I just finished level 9.

@Optimizer pinging

I think it gradually gets harder.

6:44 PM
I'm a pinging, I'm a pinging, @Optimizer.

@Optimizer The time.

@Optimizer also pinging

ok stop. i need 1 on there
ok last one.. as soon as i typed, all went off

Ping @Optimizer.

@Rainbolt's backside -

6:48 PM
What's a green one mean?
Or are you just going for a color wheel

nothing, its just completing the RGB circles on the three opposite vertices
yeah

There's four opposing vertices, so we missed one

oh well
there are actually more
but this looks cool enough :P

We can do yellow. Then we'll have the print color wheel too

6:51 PM
@Dennis That's fantastic. :D

go ahead

@Dennis -1 gun does not shoot close votes

close
(the tab)
vote

@quartata But it gets rid of trolls.

Wai C#, I can't compile it ;_;

6:55 PM
Who do I contact for getting something added to TIO again?

Dennis.

@Dennis Pull *<your lang name here>*, please.

That pings? o_O

@Dennis add Cy to TIO? Syntax: ruby cy.rb -f <someFile> <args>. It also uses STDIN.gets for getting input in the middle of the program.

$ tioupd *<your
tioupd: Can't pull more than one language

6:56 PM
@zyabin101 nice

@zyabin101 Close enough. It's tioupd.
@Cyoce I don't Ruby, but I see a few calls to eval there. Is the argument sanitized?

That moment when you realize that's not an ad.

hahaha

@Doorknob Happy April Fools! :P

is in a timezone where it's March 31

6:59 PM
Most of us are.

@Dennis let me see about that. I think those were just placeholders for before I defined my own way of parsing strings and numbers.

These ads, man.

I was disappointed that the play field didn't wrap from side to side.

I feel like I would get some strange looks if I played it at school... I'll wait until I get home. :P

The pedant in me wants to point out that neither badges nor diamonds give you rep irl.

7:04 PM
@Dennis Whaaat?
How cruel!

But you usually don't get badges without also getting rep... :P

Jon Skeet allowed this?

@Doorknob Just do it. :P
/s
@Optimizer totally

april fool on an april fool?

7:05 PM
@Optimizer ...probably not.

@CoolestVeto he edited the pic

Speaking of MTG, I want to make PPCG themed MTG cards. Who supports?

html/js editing

7:10 PM
@Dennis here are the two uses of eval: eval('"' + s.gsub(/"/, '\"') + '"') and eval('"\\' + char + '"'). They look safe to me (any #'s are replaced with \# so you can't interpolate).

@Optimizer score = 4e6

Oh wow. I like the new Music.SE design.

Monospace font for tags. Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy?

@Dennis Seems appropriate for sites like Code Review, but out of place on Music. I otherwise like the design though.

7:14 PM
Thanks @Dennis @mınxomaτ for the elucidation.

@AlexA. It's inappropriate for all sites imho.

Uhhh... is it just me or are the badges not monospaced?

Except maybe a site about typewriters.

@Doorknob Probably browser dependent?

@Doorknob Looks like monospace Inconsolata to me

7:16 PM
^

font-family: 'Open Sans',Arial,sans-serif

o_O

I don't even see a monospaced font in the font stack.

waffles eleven COUNTER-ELEVEN

ohhh

7:17 PM
Oh, heh, I am too

Yeah, those are monospace for me
I agree, that makes no sense

@Dennis huh?

I elevened the eleven.

Your eleven goes up to eleven.

still no

7:20 PM
Each of the ones in the eleven is itself an eleven

It's elevens all the way down!

-_-

OMG!!!11!!!eleven!!1!

7:21 PM
@Optimizer mod abuse -> mod abuse !!!11!! ->mod abuse !!!11!!eleven!! -> eleven

Just saw a chrome popup.
Did nothing to provoke this. WTF Chrome.

Dennis actually evolved it to "mod abuse eleven" first. Then I golfed that down to "eleven."

'cause that's how I tro11

ftfy eleven

7:23 PM
also:

To April Fool's or not to April Fool's...

Doo eeeettt

@Doorknob Better not.

If we weren't in the midst of a moderator election in which I'm desperately trying to maintain my position, I'd go all out April Foo's.

> April Foo's

7:29 PM
@AlexA. Use your socks instead.

ಠ_ಠ

time to bring back ^

@Dennis edit: only one eval presence: eval('"' + s.gsub(/"/, '\"') + '"') which is safe unless there's another way to code inject besides ending the string with a " or with #{} interpolation.

@Cyoce It's not working. halp cy.tryitonline.net/…

@Dennis try now.

7:33 PM
oh.. there are 11 candidates to mod

10.

coincidence? I think not
there were 11 in the prelim voting phase when i saw

@Dennis I pushed an updated version before sending "try now". Is it still doing the same thing?

Yep.

My company just laid down the ban hammer on jquery. I'm kind of angry at my boss for the first time ever.

so no jquery?

7:36 PM
how will you add two integers?

four = $(2).add(1).add(1)
I don't know any other way

but ..
how did u figure that 2 = 1 + 1
?

@Dennis how are you invoking the program? It looks like you're not using -f (specify a file)

Another question: How many socks per person are allowed in an election?

7:39 PM
@Dennis Yay! ¯\(ツ)/¯

@flawr 0 if you mean for voting.

No, I mean for nominating
But I guess the answer is the same^^

11

@Optimizer That is zero in base 0

and in -1 base too

7:40 PM
@flawr Technically, as many as you want as long as they have the rep and you don't mind getting a suspension for voting fraud. :P

@Optimizer Yes?

sock alert!!!11

@flawr depends on the definition of 0^0. CJam would give you 1 when treating that as base 0.

@AlexA.: I've withdrawn. No coming back from -9

oh SuperJedi also withdrew

7:43 PM
@ZachGates Ah, okay. Sorry to hear that. You're a valued member of the community regardless of whether you're a moderator though. :)

14 hours ago, by Helka Homba
Anyone know a famous tune that can be played in exactly 27 or 28 beats? Like the first two lines of Ode To Joy, but that's 32 beats.

@HelkaHomba Face of my Innocence by Arsis

^^ Still looking for that, but now 27 or 26

@MartinBüttner But mathematically I do no think that 0^0 is well defined, right?

no it's not

7:45 PM
@AlexA. Goway

:(

@flawr but since you gave it a value, you must have chosen some definition, but any other definition is just as good ;)

I never thought so far.

@AlexA. I appreciate it

Well we could save it by noticing that 11 == 0 in base -1

7:46 PM
@flawr which Optimizer already did ;)

@flawr TIL

@MartinBüttner 5000 views != famous

Optininja

@HelkaHomba pfff
I don't know a lot of famous tunes that are mathy enough for the beats to sum to 26 or 27 :/

@MartinBüttner I love this song
My favorite TTNG song
Well, that or If I Sit Still Maybe I'll Get Out of Here

7:49 PM
Math Rock ಠ_ಠ

you might find something that switches between 6/8 and 7/8 with three bars of the latter, but then more likely than not those bars won't cover a coherent part of the melody (like the 7/8 bars belonging to the chorus and the 6/8 to the verse or something)
@flawr math rock is best rock

^
Truer words hath never been spoken

@AlexA. is that the really catchy sing-along one?

I like rock rock, like real rock made of stone.

@MartinBüttner Um..........maybe?
They have a lot of songs like that :P
It's on the self-titled album but was included as a bonus track on Animals

7:52 PM
Less than 27 or 26 is ok, just more notes, evenly spaced, is better

@AlexA. ah yes, it's the one I was thinking of
I don't know I find it a lot more catchy than any other of their songs

That's fair
I have both TTNG guitar tab books. Unsurprisingly, most of their songs are crazy hard.
