Am I seriously the only one who uses quotes interchangeably in Python?

I use doubles if it's my own code. More often I'm changing someone else's code, and I'll just use whatever they're using.
I don't think I mix within a file, though.

Q: Print a PPCG user card!

CrazyPythonYou need to print a PPCG user card. Your program must take an input in the form of a username and spit out a user card. Example: _____________________________________ | CrazyPython top 10% overall | | 295 reputation | | 15 bronze badges | | 1 silver b...

12:27 AM
@GamrCorps I do it too. I think there's some subtle rule I use but I have no idea what it is. :P
@AlexA., what does R do with [1, 2, 3] + [4]?

@El'endiaStarman Oh I just use whatever I feel like using at the moment

@GamrCorps, I just checked ... I use them interchangeably even in the same file :)

How does a 600-char comment become 700 chars after rewriting it, forcing me to golf it down? (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

I like doubles as default because it's far more often that I need an apostrophe in a string than a quotation mark. Less escapes is better imo.

@El'endiaStarman In R, scalars are actually vectors of length 1. In this case, c(1, 2, 3) + c(4) is the same as c(1, 2, 3) + 4, which is c(5, 6, 7).

12:29 AM
Okay, cool. What about [1, 2, 3] + [4, 5]?

Is there any semantic difference in Python between single and double quotes? In lots of languages single quotes don't have escapes except for basic ones like \\ and \', but double quotes have ALL the escapes (and interpolation and such).

Nope, there's no difference in Python 3.
I think there might've been one in Python 2, maybe.

@Doorknob, no just not needing to escape the other one if it's in the literal

@El'endiaStarman It recycles the elements in the shorter vector to match the length of the first, so you're effectively doing [1, 2, 3] + [4, 5, 4]. In this case R will give you a warning that the longer vector's length is not a multiple of the shorter vector's length.

preceding r means it's a raw string, so backslashes are literally backslash. mostly useful for regex

12:31 AM
@AlexA. Awesome. Pytek will almost certainly do that.

@El'endiaStarman Warning and all?

Probably with warning too, yes.

Cool.

I really like the way Rust does raw strings
You can do just something like

@El'endiaStarman, There was no difference in Python2 either

12:32 AM
r"foo
bar"
But if your raw string contains quotes, you can use any number of #s:
r#"foo
"bar"
baz"#

@El'endiaStarman Sometimes I find it useful, sometimes infuriating, sometimes confusing... But it's R, so I accept it. :P

So you can also have r###"blah blah"### if you happen to have a "## in your raw string for... some exotic reason

Oooh, exotic strings

@AlexA. I assume [1,2,3] + 4 would produce [5,6,7]?

Q: Should answers have to handle invalid inputs?

My Ham DJI'm trying to get advice on how to make my challenges better. One rule that I feel like I'm always specifying is what to do when an invalid input is given. Turing test?

So if i am getting this right, this chat is with computers coding?

Yes.
We take code and make it shorter.

The Turing test is a test, developed by Alan Turing in 1950, of a machine's ability to exhibit intelligent behavior equivalent to, or indistinguishable from, that of a human. Turing proposed that a human evaluator would judge natural language conversations between a human and a machine that is designed to generate human-like responses. The evaluator would be aware that one of the two partners in conversation is a machine, and all participants would be separated from one another. The conversation would be limited to a text-only channel such as a computer keyboard and screen so that the result would...

People go to great lengths to make short code though.

The hard part is making it shorter than other people's code.

@leonardkritzjr Depends. There are code golf esoteric languages that exist for that specific purpose.

The impossible part is outgolfing Dennis

what is the benefit on making code shorter? what is wrong with like longer code?

yes i was one of the original 3

@leonardkritzjr No idea

@leonardkritzjr Nothing really. We just like making code short.

@ANerd-I d:

@leonardkritzjr the real reason we shorten code is because its often requires clever thinking

that's what this site is about: challenges that require critical thinking

@leonardkritzjr In some cases, it can be a really nice way to do things (e.g. n&-n to get highest dividing power of two, which would be quite verbose done otherwise). In other cases though, code golfing is more just for recreation, and practicing programming skills

Which is one of the eight parts that makes a Geobyte?

@Geobits Good god

@Downgoat Nope. A Geobits could be any number of Geobits, but a Geobyte is always eight Geobits.
That sounds odd, but it works.

Q: Prime Factor Game Cheating Aid

Easterly IrkThis code outputs the smallest number with more divisors than the input. from operator import mul from math import sqrt, ceil def next_prime_factor(n): if n % 2 == 0: return 2 for x in range(3, int(ceil(sqrt(n)) + 1), 2): if n % x == 0: return x return ...

@Geobits :P

@PhiNotPi are you specifically worried about something? The concept is pretty simple, the moves are simple

@EasterlyIrk oh no

1:42 AM
oh yes

well, depending on how Zap works

Barrier-to-entry: it's not really that difficult to explain, but to actually write a decent competitor feels like it will be hard

oh, I just saw your earlier ping

Note to self: Must read rules before commenting :/

@PhiNotPi lots of helper functions
allow native java answers, and they can have access to a bunch of different helper functions
you can do that over STDIO, but it requires a more advanced communicator

1:46 AM
What sort of helper functions, though?

Don't Code Reviewers generally ask for what parts of the code you are looking for review on? Or is it just "do you see anything at all, no matter how trivial?"

I plan on having entrants be Java classes that extend some base class.

Q: It's over... Jon Skeet has 1008K rep and 7 bronze badges

blehJon Skeet hit 1M total rep on Area 51. And apparently has 7 bronze badges. Something has to be done.

well, besides the basics, such as "getMoveList()", allow them to "preview" the results of a move
aka, where will the bot be if you don't insert any command
or where would the bot be if you inserted X
the biggest problem with previewing is that it usually means copying the map
if you don't want to do it that way, simply allow undoing unless their turn is over

If you're still with me in this drinking game, 1M rep + lead in a classical arcade game == a shot of gin. http://meta.stackexchange.com/questions/277749/its-over-jon-skeet-has-1008k-rep-and-7-bronze-badges

you could even take this further, and allow them to have other bots execute arbitrary amounts of code

Have no gin, but I'll take two slugs of sake to keep up.

What's weong? with capitalized tiles
Ok, I give up...

@Geobits a 9" touchscreen

Ideas: 1) one bot to control, no "base", each crystal you have gives 1 point per turn. 2) make it like code bots in that there's a more complex language, but the entrants are the bot programs (written in that language).

AHHHH

@NathanMerrill 1) is the choice I'm seriously considering

How bad can the iPad be without autocorrect? I don't use it on my phone or either tablet.

I don't think 1 bot per player really makes it less complex

@Geobits You don't have autocorrect on your phone? Every text I send would be nonsense without autocorrect

1:58 AM
^
And most are with autocorrect.

I mean, yes, it means strategies are less complex, but the entrance complexity is exactly the same

Nah, I occasionally use auto-suggest, but never the autocorrect.
It's just not that hard to type on a phone.

@EasterlyIrk I do

what?
Don't get that one.

wait, no, I don't

1:59 AM
That was pretty clear :P

it's because autocorrect messes you up when you're coding

and the "hold the crystal" is somewhat interesting because you can see where the other bots will go, but assuming that calculation is somewhat easy, it'll become a battle of "chase the bot"

@AlexA. Tasty ;)
