>_> I guess if I assume they would all use the word printer, then it's not. Probably likely, but people are weird.

you can also try stuff like: paper -rock print

:D
Oh well if lithography doesn't show up there must not be any.

Q: Write code that isn't always nice

ConfusedMr_C Write a program, that when run in one language, prints "Hello, world!", but when run in another, does something malicious. Side note: I don't care what kind of malicious thing it does, but make it do something malicious :P Don't use shebangs: #!/usr/bin/env rm Format like so: # <Harmless la...

8:13 PM
ಠ_ಠ

and another user wins "peer pressure" :)

I'm not sure why he needed to word the question as malicious.
It could have just as easily been Make a program that prints Hello World in one language, but something else in another
Although I would be very surprised if that didn't exist already.

The "something else" would have to be defined too, at least.
But yea, pretty sure it's been done.

@PeterTaylor added a reference implementation: meta.codegolf.stackexchange.com/questions/2140/…

@aditsu That's an incredibly common badge on this site.

8:17 PM
I'm going to bed now (without exploding hopefully) good night guys :)

This line was especially iffy, though:
> I don't care what kind of malicious thing it does, but make it do something malicious
That's a pretty broad license to screw with people.
And would make me unwilling to test any of them :D

he could have asked for something scary but totally harmless

Yea, and that might have been good, depending on what task was set. Maybe we should drag him into chat.

Imagined answer description: If ran in c++ with administer privileges, this erases all RAM and drive memory.

8:20 PM
Why the edit? It was better before the edit. :P

@Dennis touche

@TheNumberOne Downloads and installs Internet Explorer.

@Dennis because I do not have an actual link to prove that :P

in PPCG Minecraft Server, 1 min ago, by TheNumberOne
@ConfusedMr_C Geobits wants you in The Nineteenth Byte

If it's not free, I'm pretty sure it's against the law. :P

8:22 PM
$450? that's pretty cheap!

@Dennis Even worse, specifically IE6

@Optimizer That doesn't actually sound too bad if you're living alone with not family.

@Geobits given the condition of restrooms in train/station is bearable.
@aditsu is it ?

Yea, I haven't been on German trains in over a decade, so I don't know.

$450/mo seems really cheap

8:23 PM
It would be here for sure.

how much is an avg fare for 1 bedroom kitchen ?

How many people was she renting with? I'm renting with 4 other people for $475 and it's not a nice place :P

450 dollars for an apartment is cheap?

Getting rid of rent is just the first step, though. The train ride eliminates all basic utility bills, too.

I'm a student, I pay 350 euro / month for my room
however, it is literally just that: a room

8:24 PM
In my town (which to be fair is a uni town) a 1bd is $900/mo

@Vioz- per person?

@Optimizer yes.

water, electricity, internet is included though

I pay about 4 times more and I got a really good deal (it's a somewhat larger apartment though)

1 bhk ?

8:26 PM
The place I had before this one was $950/month. Included water only, 2br/950sqft.

you must be earning a lot to spend 2K per month on rent

And that was one of the cheaper places in town.

That's about the same as I'm spending then, I guess.

In my town, you can rent a decent house for 200 dollars.

if my rent exceeds more than 20% of my salary, I'd rather buy a house in the area.

8:27 PM
Much less if decency is not required.

@Dennis Where's that? You need a new neighbor?

@Dennis that's about the same for me. I'm surprised given the currency difference

5 bed/2.5 bath, 1500sqft house for $2375/mo including utilities

@Geobits I live in Paraguay.

Hmm. That's a hell of a commute.

8:28 PM
@Optimizer What currency do you use?

@Geobits travel the world in commute time
@Dennis well, the ratio is still what I had in mind when I spoke that sentence, but now its the opposite. I am still shocked.

Actually, now that I think about it, probably only 1300sqft

(I somehow thought you were European, do the maths now ;) )

single-bedroom apartments in the central area here go for $3500+/month

@aditsu USD ?

8:32 PM
yep

@aditsu Sheesh, where is that?

Hong Kong

Those sound like California/NYC prices
Ah, makes sense

@Geobits You wanted to talk to @ConfusedMr_C, right?

@aditsu do you have an inbuilt Jacuzzi and swimming pool too ?

8:33 PM
(I live in a cheaper area though)

What is sqft in m^2?

1/9

0.092903

^ 100 sqft ~= 9.29 sqm

@Optimizer haha no, but there's one swimming pool in my building

8:33 PM
Approximately $1200/month for a 5 bed, 2 bath house.

@aditsu how much percentage of your income is that house ? :D

@TheNumberOne Wow.. where's that?

11sqft ~ 1sqm

@TheNumberOne 5 bedrooms ?? who needs that much ?

I'm 15 years old and in a large family of 6.
Of course I don't have to pay for rent :)

8:35 PM
@Optimizer it's not a house, it's a flat in a tall building; also, I don't have a very regular income (but my wife does)

@TheNumberOne sheesh, a free hoarder!

@aditsu what do you do for work?

programming and related stuff

@Vioz- Somewhere in the US

even NYC and CA people complain about the ~2K monthly rent when they have 100K+ annual income!

8:36 PM
@TheNumberOne Ah, I see. That sounds like Ohio prices :P

They could afford to buy a house...

@flawr Probably not much of one in NYC/CA

@flawr Most people have very little control of their spending. When their income increases, so does their spending. This leaves very little or no money in savings.

How about morgages?
*mortgages
I do not know about other countries, but in switzerland you pay much less taxes if you have mortgages.

every country has tax exemptions in case of loans
not sure about "much less" part

8:40 PM
Perhaps not enough?=)

how much is in swiz ?

Not sure about the details, let me search

@aditsu I hear mortgages in Hong Kong (I think that's what it is) can have really long term periods

yeah, isn't that true everywhere?

of course with that high property rates
also, you end up paying 3 to 4 times the actual value

8:43 PM
Well, in Canada and US it's generally maxed out at 30 or 35 years.

I think in HK too

I think it's Hong Kong, but it could be Japan, that does 80+ year mortgages.

wut? never heard of that

@orlp Now to find someone who knows Python and wants to help...

Because it's generally tradition in insert country to have three generations living in a house, grandparents, parents and children, and the children will generally keep the house (at least one of them) and have their kids there

8:45 PM
^ Ashley Madison members right now

@aditsu I was mistaken, it is Japan. 100 year mortgages.

@Optimizer You can deduct the mortgages from the taxable property (right word?), so this basically means that it is possible to own less than nothing when it comes to taxes, and you can deduct the interst from your taxable income.

wow

So yes, that can be quite a lot.

that is typical. in most countries
mortgage amount is reduced from taxable income
(with an upper limit to the reduction)

8:48 PM
AFAIK, Canada doesn't do this. At least not Ontario.
You can get a partial refund on interest if your house is also a place of business.

you still have to pay tax on the amount you pay to the govt. as loan?

I personally don't know, never had a mortgage myself
But I can't find anything that would suggest that's the case

so if your 50% salary is gone in loan, then your tax is 30%, you are really left with 20% salary..

what do you mean by what you pay to the govt. as loan?

house loans etc. are going to banks, right?

8:51 PM
Yeah.

OK, downloading real programming languages for the Hello World quiz is no fun. They're huge and refuse to compile.

>Q. What costs are involved in obtaining a mortgage?
>A. Costs incurred are:
>* Legal costs (Usually between $600 - $1000)
>* Insurance on the property and mortgage applicant
>* In some cases an appraisal is requested
>* Taxes

France too
rest all listed there allow in some sorts.

Our income tax isn't too much though

how much?

8:55 PM
If you're make less than $40,922 in my province, it's 15% federal and 5.05% provincial
Less than ~$81k, and you pay 20.05% on the first ~$41k and 31.15% on the rest

that's reasonable, but not "isn't too much though"

The most you can be taxed is 42.6%, and that's on what you're making over $220k
When you consider that our health care is included and in general, Canada is not a very expensive place to live, it's not bad

gotta sleep now. cya.

He sleeps? :O

argh, why doesn't google search for special characters? :(

9:11 PM
So that doesn't is the same as doesnt, can't is the same as` cant, I like bananas.` is the same as I like bananas!!!!!, etc.

@aditsu Searching for ಠ works

I have an interpreter for a programming language written in ruby. The only problem is that I can't figure out how to supply the program I wrote to the interpreter.
Does anyone here know ruby enough to figure it out by looking at the source?

@TheNumberOne I could probably give it a try.

9:26 PM
that's the worst Ruby code I've ever seen :/
You run the program with no command line arguments, and give the filename as the first line of STDIN.

And I get a type error :\
@Doorknob Thank you :)

9:50 PM
You all have 1 hour left to crack this!

@AlexA. This works in just kidding.

@Dennis What?

Good night everyone

@flawr Good night!

Good night flawr

9:51 PM
oh btw: does anyone here have a timbuk2 bag?

My new esolang: just kidding

@flawr My girlfriend does. Why do you ask?
@Dennis Is that a thing or are you trolling?

I am considering buying one, but I am not sure about the sizes...

@AlexA. What does just kidding suggest? :P

Goats birthing.

9:53 PM
:D

@TheNumberOne What the hell.
@Dennis It suggests that you made an esolang with an unfortunate name.
Probably implemented in CJam or ???.

@AlexA. Looks great :)

@AlexA. Is that your house? :D

@AlexA. Look up the word kidding with google.

@BetaDecay Haha no, that's a little community structure in a local park.

9:56 PM
Aw still looks nice. Oregon and Washington are the nicest states
edit: nicest mainland states

@BetaDecay Let's agree to disagree.

@BetaDecay Washington > Oregon. Washington > Hawaii. WASHINGTON RULES ALL STATES.

@AlexA. Nah
Alaska > Oregon > Washington > Colorado > Utah

Unfortunately, Washington DC rules all states.

@Rainbolt Remember to chkdsk

10:00 PM
@BetaDecay This also isn't, but it's a photo of the building next to mine in my condo complex. Shows the wooded ravine behind my house.

@AlexA. That's amazing :)

@AlexA. Haha, if just kidding ever becomes a thing, I'm definitely going to implement it in ???.

I'd love to live there

Do it. Washington > Earth.

Here's the view of my village

10:01 PM
@BetaDecay Completely untrue. I've never been to Alaska, Colorado, or Utah, but still. Completely untrue.
@BetaDecay That looks amazing! I would love to wander around there.

Idaho > Utah > Montana > Other states

@AlexA. Haha it's right next to a mountain range too, so there's plenty to do

:D

@BetaDecay Picture of mountains?

Closest mountain is probably Mount Snowdon
Night

10:03 PM
@TheNumberOne False. It goes Washington > Oregon > California > Washington DC > Vermont > all others.
(I've never been to Vermont either but it sounds lovely)
@BetaDecay Goodnight!
@Dennis You really should make an esolang called just kidding. It would have been perfect for the quiz.

@AlexA. I live relatively close to the Grand Tetons.

That moose is majestic as fuck.

majestik*

@Doorknob ? That isn't how you spell "majestic."
But the Cascade Mountains are objectively superior.

@AlexA. It's a Monty Python reference (to the opening credits of The Holy Grail :P).
The majestik møøse.

10:09 PM
Oh, haha.
It's been too long since I've seen it.

ø_ø

@trichoplax :D

õ_ò

Why are they still starred?? It's so derivative :)

@AlexA. Have you heard of Island Park?

10:10 PM
@trichoplax I usually don't star those, but that one was pretty good. :P

@TheNumberOne No, but I just Googled it. Looks really nice. Is that where you live? It looks like it's pretty close to Yellowstone (at least the part that's in Idaho).

@AlexA. No, I don't live there. I was just going to tell you that it is an ancient caldera made by the Yellowstone volcano.

Oh cool!!!
Mt. Rainier in Washington could pretty much blow at any moment. When it does it's expected to be worse than Mt. St. Helens.
We're also way overdue for a massive earthquake.

Meteor strike too

@trichoplax Can you predict those?

@AlexA. I can't say when one's due, but I can say overdue :)
We've had a few close calls "recently": 1908 and 2013

Where?

1908 was Tunguska
2013 was Chelyabinsk

If you flipped a count 2000 times and you always got heads, you would say that a tail is long overdue. However, the probability of getting a head is still 50% per toss.

10:23 PM
Tunguska flattened an entire forest

^ I've heard of that one.
Didn't it land it Siberia?

@trichoplax I thought you were in the UK, not Russia?

Chelyabinsk was 18 miles up when it exploded so it didn't flatten the city but it blew the glass out of the windows for miles around and injured 1500 people with flying glass. Thankfully no one died
@AlexA. Yeah, but I'd have to go back a lot further for a meteor strike on the UK :)
The two recent big events just happen to be in different parts of Russia. Russia is a big place...

@trichoplax Oh, okay. When you said "we" I figured you meant a place where you live(d).

No - "we" as a species, because if one makes it down the few extra miles that those didn't then the surface impact will do damage on a global scale
When it comes to significant sized meteors I consider anywhere on Earth nearby...

10:26 PM
On a global scale? Due to the size or force of the impact or something?

We've probably had several more powerful meteorites that fell into the ocean.

Kidney stones from the stars.

@TheNumberOne I guess so. Wouldn't even be a seismic event to record from a distance then...

@TheNumberOne If I flipped heads 2000 times in a row, I'd definitely expect heads next, because that thing is rigged.

@AlexA. like a major volcanic explosion, the dust might spread over the entire atmosphere which can easily cool down the global average temperature by a degree or two, which can have massive impacts on harvest and stuff

10:28 PM
@MartinBüttner Brutal.

The 1883 eruption of Krakatoa in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) began in the afternoon of August 26, 1883 (with origins as early as May of that year) and culminated with several destructive eruptions of the remaining caldera. On August 27, two thirds of Krakatoa collapsed in a chain of titanic explosions, destroying most of the island and its surrounding archipelago. Additional alleged seismic activity continued to be reported until February 1884, though reports of those after October 1883 were later dismissed by Rogier Verbeek's investigation. It was one of the deadliest and most destructive...

We really should be spreading off planet...

@MartinBüttner :O
@trichoplax Not having air is more dangerous than impending eruption or quake. :P

For some reason Krakatoa reminds me of SOH CAH TOA

@trichoplax or become very robust machines

10:33 PM
Haha

@MartinBüttner That sounds good too :)

@MartinBüttner Or live in very deep bunkers.

@AlexA. youtube.com/watch?v=kA7ty0Cfw8s (you don't actually have to listen to it...)

Relevant indeed. Haha
54 minutes to safety!!

10:52 PM
@AlexA. Is a language on esolangs?

It has a page on one or more of the sites required for the challenge.

was anyone else reminded of Jaqen H'ghar by TheNumberOne's last message?

Never seen Game of Thrones. :/

@Sp3000 do you have a few minutes to discuss Labyrinth? I'll probably head to bed soonish and will likely be busy tomorrow

Er... go for it?

11:01 PM
I'll create a room, so as not to pester everyone else with it

Nobody else is saying anything. :P
Might as well discuss it in here where nosy people like myself can nose about with our noses.

well it's not a private room:

 Esoteric Programming Languages

A room for discussing, creating, using, golfing and discoverin...

I'm just lazy.

@PhiNotPi why wouldn't it be?

11:03 PM
how is it not?

Ends in .edu. That's all you need.

If you don't think that's a valid URL, then how is http://meta.codegolf.stackexchange.com?

The .com in the middle throws me off.

why?
Subdomain names have no special restrictions.

Is there a www.com.com?
Don't go there, it's just ads

11:15 PM
@AlexA. Damnit Alex, I haven't been able to find a stack-based language where X: saves as var, X. pushes var and ! (!' maybe?) outputs :/

@Sp3000 Who said anything about stacks, variables, and output? :P
I also love that you preceded that with "damnit Alex." Hahaha
"THIS IS YOUR FAULT. YOU DID THIS TO ME."

If it's not, then you got me good :P

There's 14 minutes left, so I'll tell you that your description is on the right track.
Hurry!
Or rather, don't. Then I can be safe. :D

11:29 PM
2 minutes! It's now or never, @Sp3000!

I give up :/

FALSE?
^almost certainly wrong

@PhiNotPi You're actually very close with that.
SAFE! :D

... ah. I thought I'd checked Mouse because the link was purple, but now that I think about it that was for a different challenge :/
Good job :P

Thanks!

11:40 PM
(I have no idea for ricochet's, so I guess I'll have to leave that one too)

Sneak peek of Haystack ;)

I see a needle

Exactly! :P

/me wonders if a Haystack/Snowman quine would be possible

Quite possibly

11:53 PM
err, polyglot I mean

I didn't think a 2D language would be that much more useful
then I realized I didn't even have to implement a looping construct, I was like Thank god

well, you don't have to implement a looping construct in a normal language either. You just need conditionals, and gotos (which is basically what 2d movement is)

Fair enough, didn't think of it that way
I do think that looping in a 2D language can be more intuitive, sort of easier to illustrate that way
