12:02 PM
the comment removal challenge would be good fun in Retina, but it really needs some clarification and a more solid test case before I start

pastebin.com/4fN14FCh I think this graduated in 107 or 108 days in World Building. Stopped because other people seemed started playing.
based on CH's and the egg protector on meta

let's try it

12:17 PM
Searching the log, we have graduated in 103 in the time we get 235. But I think I didn't understand the other details not in this script correctly yet.

@MartinBüttner we could have used your help
when the world was going against us

I don't think having more people in chat would have helped anything

12:33 PM
I hope we're not running bots that auto-answer questions

how many people are raiding us ?

looks like 3
nevermind, 4

okay guys, I don't like campaigning for close votes, but that comment removal challenge now has three invalid answers. could anyone check the question and see if they agree that it's "unclear what you're asking"?

I hope we can break out of this cycle

hmm, anime are now ahead of us ..
:/

12:41 PM
for whatever reason, we still appear ahead on the leaderboard for me
even though they have a slightly lower average

I meant, they are going to win again soon, while we are not even graduated for this cycle

ah
botters gonna bot

We are ahead because we have 0.1 more flags

why not raiders gonna raid ? :(

s

12:42 PM
@Optimizer cuz ppl get mad

because that's explicitly against the rules

@Runer112 Flags are worth 10 days. We have 0.1 flags up on them, so -1 day from total, thats why we're ahead.

ah, interesting

@Runer112 no its still not

"May I be a jerk and ruin other sites' games? – No."
from the rules

12:43 PM
that is so open ended
and for us, people are still closing/restarting
and nobody cares, so its obv not against the rules

I'm aware people are still choosing to break the rules to fight us

the rule is that you dont have to be a jerk and ruin other site's games
so many subjective words .

it was added in direct response to raiding tactics, so its intent seems pretty clear

we have already declared that we would enjoy competition in the form of raiding, and hence, it isn't ruining our game

so , if we have already declared, and people are still believing that, I don't see any harm in doing it as well
we are anyways getting blamed for doing something we are not actually doing

12:46 PM
The harm is done to the reputation of this community.
6

we'd have to raid a site that is also open to raiding, of which there is none

Arqade vs PCG go

so, raids on our own stackegg are allowed, but every other stackegg isn't

No but really, just don't do it.

sigh. I reiterate, after all that has happened, is it really worth it?

12:48 PM
@MartinBüttner nobody will remember this. The least it did was to give PPCG more exposure and more chat users at any given time
the game will get over today anyways

@Doorknob No, it is not.

@Doorknob I'm not advocating we go and raid. Just that its technically legal for other people to raid us

I was happy to see @Doorknob that you locked the PPCG Meta about raiding.
@NathanMerrill It's not technically legal for anyone to raid anyone.

it's not technically allowed for anyone to raid anyone
mods just have no interest in trying to punish raiders other than us

The only rule is to "not ruin other people's games"

12:50 PM
what is with these answer votes

it doesn't say "don't raid"

are you guys running malfunctioning bots or something
don't do that

@Runer112 raiders

those weren't raiders, just people picking the wrong option
and a lot of them

@Runer112 Who is punishing? And who is being punished?

12:51 PM
it'll happen again here

I haven't checked out the game myself, so I may be missing something... but from what I understand, why do you even care so much about raiding. Wouldn't it actually be more fun if another site managed to beat PPCG's record as a motivation to get even better?
2

@Runer112 I'm running the one you posted

I didn't post any bots
I don't even like the idea of using bots

Which option is considered right now?

but 4 people consistently vote answer when answers is full and quality isn't

12:52 PM
sorry, right

which sounds like a broken bot to me

it might not be

@MartinBüttner we dont have any record

I'm running a bot because at the time I started, it is constantly restarting by raiders

no record can be formed when you are constantly being raided by 4+ restarters

12:53 PM
@MartinBüttner that's the current state of the competition. However, I personally would find it more fun if there was PvP between sites

picking a full one when it's going to decay over another which has just decayed may be benefitial

@rcrmn absolutely true

@Simon People calling us evil, cheaters, griefers, sociopaths, losers, and assholes for playing the game as we interpreted it. People were banned from chat and scorned on meta. There was absolutely no assumption of good faith, and an immediate jump to "screw those guys", diamonds included. And they say we're the ones taking it too seriously. So no, no "punishment", but yes, "punishment".
11

I don't follow that logic at all
it's better to maybe stop a decay than to guarantee an increase?
either case is a net of 0 hearts

@Optimizer Even if that is true, at this point we've gained all the additional attention/traffic this will give us. Any further raiding will only be detrimental to people's opinion of PPCG, and not bring us further exposure.
2

12:55 PM
Yes: stopping a decay gives you more turns than guaranteeing an increase of one that will not decay this turn

unless you guess the decay wrong, in which case it's -1

going beyond stops 2 decay

My bot ignore warnings 2 times and never vote a just decayed stat, even if it is the only option (but not if two decayed together)
not sure it is good or not

@MartinBüttner I don't think the current argument is whether we should raid

that's definitely not good when graduated

12:55 PM
@Geobits Sociopaths? Source or are you making this up?

@MartinBüttner at this point, I am only caring about winning

when most stats are maxed and quality drops from 4 to 3 then, it's nearly guaranteed to drop from 3 to 2 next

@Unihedro It was a starred post in Arqade, let me find it...

Stop with the flags, please.
6

Continue with the stars, please.

12:57 PM
in The Bridge, 18 hours ago, by Yuuki
Okay, when your go-to strategy for winning a game is crippling the other competitors, you are a sociopath. Plain and simple.

@SimonAndréForsberg ... considering my message was starred, the only logical reaction is to flag that, right? :P

@Runer112 I believe only in the case when another stat decays

@Geobits Wow.

@NathanMerrill this was still continuing the thread from Optimizer's "I don't see any harm in doing it as well"

well, when we get to max-ish stats in graduation, I think you'll see it start to happen

12:59 PM
@Runer112 it's when it have a high traffic

yes, it is

well, while there are so many people here in chat, I'm going to shameless advertise for my next CodeBots
1
A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

Nathan MerrillCode Bots: Multi-Threaded Bots Ok. This description is going to be long, but I've tried to make it as clear as possible. It's fairly difficult to give a language spec in a short post. What Code Bots all about? Code Bots is a KotH where you try to write your code over other's code before they...

@Geobits wow and that even got 5 stars

This one is going to require more fine tuning than the last I believe

@NathanMerrill Let's raid this post!

1:00 PM
@MartinBüttner At least five people don't like to lose.
Anime's average is below ours now :(

it's not too hard to have a good average when all your vote bots unanimously agree, and you're not being griefed

@Martin Yea, the main problem from yesterday (as I see it) wasn't raiding. That seemed like an inevitable emergent strategy to me, and we were only doing it for a couple hours anyway when the rule got changed and we stopped. The reaction to it was quite disproportionate IMO.

I got chat banned and then meta took a shit on me: meta.stackexchange.com/q/252424/254466

@Geobits Yes, I agree. My messages were mostly referring to not fanning the flames again today.

@Geobits Think about what the answers from PPCG users said on the meta post. I see a lot of defensive attitude such as "I don't think raiding is all that bad.", "Who cares?", etc. than "We're sorry. We will stop doing this."

1:05 PM
@Simon The way I see it, you weren't at all concerned with fixing the problem. You were more concerned with nailing the winners to the wall. I suggested a fix and it got insta downvoted.
An it was an extremely neutral post too. If this is a problem, then here is a suggested solution. Simple as that.

@Rainbolt Your fix being downvoted was for a different reason.

I had my if statement exactly backwards and I fixed it
Then got more downvotes

why did we just ask with full questions

@Rainbolt It also ignores the chat response I posted in the message.

@Simon We stopped. I'm not going to say I'm sorry, though, because I'm not. I explained why we (or at least I) did it, and even that was taken the wrong way. Apologize? No, because it wasn't done in bad faith. We played the game as this site has trained us to play games.

1:07 PM
@Unihedro But it would have helped the problem, even it it didn't alleviate it entirely.

@Rainbolt Your premise does not apply. If it really does help the problem then it wouldn't be downvoted to begin with.

So now allowing brand new accounts to even see the StackEgg would do nothing? Well you're wrong. I signed up for three new accounts yesterday for the sole purpose of raiding, and was successful twice.
Statistically, I'm probably not the only one who did that.
There is a very high chance that raids would not have been possible if new accounts were prevented from cross site stack eggs.
That just leaves the already existing accounts. Yes, some of them may have tried to screw with things, but it would have been to a lesser degree, right?

"There is a very high chance that raids would not have been possible if new accounts were prevented from cross site stack eggs." -> If you actually mentioned that in your Meta answer, things would had went a lot more differently.

Are you kidding? Here is the post, in full. This problem, if it is indeed a problem, can be helped with the following logic:

If User registered prior to today:
    Show egg
Else:
    Show regular ad
This would at least prevent new users from raiding, but it wouldn't stop existing raiders. So perhaps also add the following:

If User is not trusted:
    Hide restart option
That should eliminate restarts altogether, making it difficult, but not impossible, to raid. I don't think raiding can be eliminated altogether, but this might at least make it unattractive.

@Rainbolt I did say "Easy solution: Require 'trusted user' privilege to vote to restart a site." (The crossed-through text about disqualifying PPCG was meant as a joke, a bad one I have realized.) Unfortunately I cannot see your answer as it is deleted but I believe you wrote a bit more than just a suggested fix that might explain the downvotes...

1:13 PM
@Rainbolt "This would at least prevent new users from raiding, but it wouldn't stop existing raiders." isn't a persuasive speech like the line I quoted.

everyone else is allowed to crack jokes. I see

@Simon I literally just dumped the entire post into this chat room. You think I am lying now?

@Rainbolt He was probably already typing when you pasted it and didn't see...

Ah, he types while looking at the keyboard. I did that until I got this job.

My keyboard doesn't have characters labelled.

1:15 PM
Well, like I said, assumption of good faith and all :P

think we're now in quality double-drop phase
yup

I wish that the scoreboard would score by high score. It would mean that: (1) bots are ineffective, and (2) raiding would only be a temporary setback

anime is going for 274-ish this time
did we ever do sub 270 ?

we did 235

without using flags ?

1:16 PM
set the record by far, I think
yes

wow
do we have the same strat now ?

no

can we ?

@Rainbolt No, I know you're not lying. I downvoted for two reasons: 1. "This problem, if it is indeed a problem" - I interpret that as you didn't really think of it as a problem. 2. It wouldn't fix much, I believe there were a lot better solutions available.

no, becuase dumb bots are running

1:18 PM
@SimonAndréForsberg yes, we all saw the lot better solutions that were executed yesterday

and they're too stupid to figure out how to max quality with max traffic

CAN WE PLEASE STOP ALL BOTS FOR SOME TIME ?

like here, they'll vote users
ask, actually
which is wrong

@Rainbolt No, I don't type while looking at the keyboard, I started typing, got distracted, continued typing. Finished my message and then read what had been said. I can't read others messages and write at the same time.

questions won't decay this day, but quality will

1:19 PM
Better first post the next strategy here before stopping the bots, they at least will vote to continue

I'd be happier if the bots didn't try to be smart and just upvoted the most popular, reasonable human-selected solution

Or you know, if there were no bots.

@user23013 stopping bots means manual voting starts :)

yes, or if there were no bots at all
that's preferable
bot fail again

Ok, I stopped mine, but I can't be around to manually vote, so you may have problems with the raiders

1:23 PM
another fail
got lucky, though

which one?

I changed mine to only vote at 8 seconds left. Better than nothing.

whats with the random votes ?

@SimonAndréForsberg Oh, you think there are better solutions do you? Do you remember commenting on my post with "It can also be solved with the following logic: Require 'trusted user' privilege to vote to restart a site. – Simon André Forsberg 20 hours ago"

I'm going to start the bot that votes the most popular, so at least you will have that vote against restarts

1:26 PM
I literally absorbed that comment into my post because I thought it was a great idea. I guess you decided you don't like it now.
It's not like I was taking a dump on people in the comments. I was rather receptive.
More receptive than I am with people in here anyway.
My office is losing it's mind today

So @Runer112 can we update the faulty bots ?

Our CEO just emailed the entire office saying that there were pigs and donuts in the break room. All that was there was an "April Fools!" note.

I dunno, I'm not responsible for them

And our VP's entire office is covered with string and tape.

I'm not involved in the raiding much (1 restart vote, I admit). But for anyone expecting a sorry, I think the problem is, we all know that raiding is bad now, and that won't happen again. But if there is another underspecified event later, where the bad behavior looks nothing like raiding happened today, if you expect everyone (not necessarily us) knows the good way by common sense, it probably won't work as you think. So, that adds nothing to the current solution.

1:31 PM
@Rainbolt I believe I removed my downvote after that edit.

FML Why didn't I think of that yesterday. If I was gonna get downvoted into oblivion I would much rather have posted that instead.

btw, what the point of making raiding against the rules if it's not actually going to be enforced

Good think I managed to remain civil until at least 7 PM
@Runer112 You misunderstood. Raiding is not against the rules. Organized raiding by PPCG is against the rules.
3
That was a joke

ah ok

I have a terrible sense of humor, sorry

1:35 PM
no, that's fine

disappointing that we get a bunch of hate for doing it when it wasn't against the rules, and now that it's against the rules, people doing it have no repercussions

@Runer112 its because we weren't discreet.

Obviously the correct solution is to organize it all off-site next time :P

restart bots aren't exactly discreet, either

@Rainbolt Unfortunately, from what I have been reading here overall, it feels like that attitude is really going around here. I get a lot of "PPCG are the victims now!" feeling around here.
For example:
43 mins ago, by Geobits
@Simon People calling us evil, cheaters, griefers, sociopaths, losers, and assholes for playing the game as we interpreted it. People were banned from chat and scorned on meta. There was absolutely no assumption of good faith, and an immediate jump to "screw those guys", diamonds included. And they say we're the ones taking it too seriously. So no, no "punishment", but yes, "punishment".

1:37 PM
@Runer112 That's the point of having better rules.

26
Q: ASCII topology pt 1: Can I count on you?

Matt NoonanI have a serious problem. I have some text files where I keep my very important numbers -- all of the important ones! And twos, and threes.. These numbers were so important that I couldn't entrust them to those newfangled decimal or binary number systems. I kept each number encoded in unary, as ...

any of you looked at that one?

@SimonAndréForsberg What attitude should we have? Please inform us.

considering people have griefed us nearly constantly since it was made against the rules, but we stopped imemdiately, yes, I think we have a right to be upset

@Almo What about it?

@Simon Eh, the reaction is disproportionate, that's all. As soon as it was complained about, we stopped, yet the hate kept piling on. Like I said before, we expected a different reaction to our PvP play (retaliation).

1:40 PM
I'm not sure how I would approach it. I haven't read the answers, of course

@Geobits I think that maybe it wasn't enough to stop. He wants an apology and needs us to feel sorry before he can move on. That's the vibe I'm getting.

if anyone else wants the ditto bot, modified to avoid restarts, nothing, flags and closes
//StackEgg JS bot
//paste into your browser console (probably F12 to open), definitely works in Chrome
//stop with clearInterval(egger)
(function() {
var time = $('#egg-clock-text')
var actions = $('.egg-action')
function vote() {
if (time.text() != '1')
return
var votes = [], buttons = []
actions.each(function() {
var t = $(this)
var id = t.attr('id');
id = id.substr(id.lastIndexOf('-')+1);
if(id == 'restart' || id == 'nothing' || id == 'close' || id == 'flagformoderator')
return;
votes.push(parseInt(t.find('.egg-action-tally').attr('title')) | 0)

btw, we're very close to getting restarted 233 days in
which, now that it's blatantly against the rules of the game, I don't know why nobody cares to do anything about it

We're just getting what we deserve, obviously ;)

we've been restarted way more times than we deserve
here we go, restart

1:42 PM
@Almo The general idea I had was to use the fact that you have to turn either left or right at a corner, and the first char you hit after a + (either - or |) determines the direction you should be going

I'll vote to get our egg to hatch. Then I'll idle again.

I kind of like writing parsers, and I guess this is just a weird kind of parser.

So if after a + you go right and hit a | then that's invalid, but if it's - then it's okay and after that can be a mix of - and | before finishing with -+

maybe I'll attempt a solution :)

Yeah this one is pretty tricky, especially with blutorange's test cases :P

1:44 PM
@Rainbolt I can't tell you what attitude you should have. I can only make decisions based on the attitude that you do have.

heheh yeah

@SimonAndréForsberg are there any other rules around here that are actually secretly okay to break?

It's ok to break the rule about making sentences where only the word italics is in italics.

or just this one

I've seen people get away with that

1:45 PM
Simon isn't responsible for the people who are trying to restart us. So don't blame him for it @Runer112

I know he isn't

@Runer112 What are you trying implying or trying to say?

I'm trying to say, it would be nice if the no griefing rule was enforced

There isn't actually a no griefing rule

we've already lost like 6 hours due to griefing, which seems more than our fair share

1:46 PM
@Runer112 I am surprised that the SE Devs didn't just fix the issue about the restart button. That was what I expected would happen from the meta post. I did not expect all the "Let's fight back"-attitude.

Darn you Chrome spell check. I wrote griefing and it got underlined in red so I changed it to greifing

Spoken like a true Code Reviewer :P

Auto-incorrect.

For the record: Directly when your raids were discovered, at first I went to your site and voted to restart a few times. Then I realized what I was doing and I thought that just because you had destroyed a few other sites eggs a few times, I shouldn't fight back the same way.
"An eye for an eye ends up making the whole world blind"

Have you ever played a pvp game?

1:49 PM
no

lots of people are stealing each other's eyes, still :p

I've played several pvp games. I do not consider StackEggs a PvP game.

For the record, I voted to restart once - right after PCG restarted ours. Never then. Also:

@SimonAndréForsberg Right, and that's the main difference. We did, and the world hates us for it ;)

this is going to be a pretty good finish, sub-260

1:50 PM
I hang out at GameDev, and the guys there quickly stopped playing once the original greifing was discovered. They decided it was a poor game design, and not worth playing. Which was an unfortunate consquence of this whole mess with the Egg

@Geobits It's OTT imho.

Our only problem was being the only ones to see it that way early on.

This is the tenth time Simon said that, and the tenth time Geobits responded like that. sigh

It occurred to me, but since it was just a bit of April Fool's fun, I didn't act on it.

@Rainbolt Isn't that what we do in here?

1:51 PM
restarters getting serious in PPCG, six of them that time

I'm trying to find something brilliant to say that will break through to the next level of argument.

thankfully, we're on day 1 :p

take that Anime :D

@Optimizer Nice.

wow, 7+ restarters

1:53 PM
Who cares if we restart on day 1?

well, we need to actually make progress
constantly getting restarted on day 1 is no good either

Let the non-bots restart us a few times, they'll get bored, then we march on to another egg. NBD.

I think they might all be bots

And I'll be happy to help once we near the finish line

If they were all bots it seems unlikely they would vary in number so much.

1:54 PM
I think people just turn their bots on and off

Just say something like "We're 200 days in and need help" and you'll probably get some.

some help? or some griefers

Help
I will vote when we reach the final stretch. All I'm sayin...

it might be tricky to make it to the final stretch
especially since current voters don't seem to know the strategy :/

hey, are there any other good april fools going on?

1:59 PM
sorry but what is exactly, then, the strategy?

@NathanMerrill there are a lot of fake news everywhere...

@Unihedro well, I imagine some of it is good

So should we ignore the warnings 2 times?

Four times
Is the maximal number

Did you tried that once, or is this the first time? I guess downvoting while user is red is something different

2:02 PM
I tested it on Sharepoint SE twice with two different stats
Both times, I let two stats go red for three iterations
On the fourth iteration, I addressed one of them
Err... I ignored them I mean
I just let Sharepoint get shut down. Nobody is playing there anyway
But you can go test it yourself on another vacant site. There are a hundred of them
Private Beta: Alternate Q & A
Public beta: Alternate Q & A until one is maxed. Then start attacking Quality. Then Users.
Graduation: Alternate Q & A until one is maxed. Then start attacking Quality. Then Users.
All phases: Ignore warnings up to four times, then address them (unless there are two, then you obviously need to address one of them on the fourth iteration).
And if there are a ton of restart voters, just wait until someone else votes and copy them so that we remain unanimous. They will get tired after maybe five rounds and go home.
They tend to stay longer if we are divided.

should we ignore just decayed stat?

bleh, people aren't following one of the almost infallible rules, which is don't vote for something that just decayed

Unless you've been following chat, that instinctively feels like the right move.

@Rainbolt Thank you

notable exception is after quality drops from 4 to 3 with 4 traffic, because it'll drop to 2 next day

2:14 PM
@Runer112 It is fallible. I keep telling you that. The more correct rule is "don't vote for something that just decayed unless everything else is maxed".
Not to mention the exception you just mentioned

I did say it was almost infallible, didn't I?

50% exception, 50% rule. Not much use for that IMO

it's almost always true

If meta hadn't blown up, we'd have a rather fine collection of more precise rules I think

I could try to make a detailed strategy document, but it would be too hard to memorize and follow probably

2:18 PM
A decision tree would be the best way to represent it
Very easy to follow

well, tree or no tree, I was pretty clear about that "almost infallible" rule, but we just got that wrong
so I'm not hopeful something even more complicated would work better

¡Hola guys! What have I missed in days gone by since Christmas?

Nothing much

Ahh thought so haha

we really like voting for things that just decayed
don't know why, since that's objectively not optimal
here we go again
why :(

2:25 PM
Are we still using bots or they are not looking at chat? I changed my bot to a follower (while testing strategies elsewhere). But maybe that's being worse.

@Geobits What about this?
Sounds dramatic..

Bah, I'm stuck in a conundrum
In my next challenge, all actions theoretically happen simultaneously
However, the "If" statement makes that tough
because whether or not the conditional is true determines what happens (and hence, the internal order)
but the conditional itself can depend on other actions

@Rainbolt how many days to win with that strat ?

@Beta A bit ;)

Copy 4 C
If C=4 #0 #2
Copy 2 C

2:32 PM
@Optimizer 235 days

oh, lets do it

Ok. If commands are occurring simultaneously, line 1 is being executed, and multiple read/writes at the same time=bad data, what should happen?

easier said than done
I think most people don't have the discipline to let an alert sit

Btw, sorry, if anyone wants a follower bot, I fixed this one (it broke when there was a restart and change of phase) pastebin.com/qAMkTRy3

122 days to graduation and a flag was used? Terrible.

2:39 PM
@rcrmn which one did you fix...

no flag used

I'm on a bot hunt to see how other did it

Oh right, only one flag for beta

try to be brave people, let alerts sit for 4 turns!

2:40 PM
Originally by Calvin's

nevermind, we have no bravery

@rcrmn But that one still had kinks.

as I said Optimizer, easier said than done :p

@Calvin'sHobbies What do you mean?

It didn't always work for me, not totally sure why. It looks like you updated it yourself as you just mentioned: pastebin.com/qAMkTRy3

2:43 PM
we're really scared of alerts, apparently

yes, the problem was that you kept the buttons and options in a variable, and when the on-screen ones where recreated due to change of phase or changing to the restart screen, they stopped working

I wish chat was integrated into stackegg

My version has that fixed, and only votes on the "valid" options

seems pretty clear that people aren't getting these messages
DON'T VOTE FOR SOMETHING THAT JUST DROPPED* (*with minor exceptions)

Yeah, your version seems to be working great.

I'm commandeering the Stats egg tight now, testing a new strat.

I should comandeer an egg
bet I could get sub-230

@GiantCowFilms This is one of mine that votes for the thing with fewest hearts. (Not an optimal strategy) pastebin.com/PHH9yLZX

we just voted for a maxed stat... facepalm

And to make it a restart bot you just need to remove btn and Continue from the list on line 41

@GiantCowFilms pastebin.com/4fN14FCh This is my bot if you are interested. I'm not currently running it. And it sometimes screw up.

2:50 PM
we might get restarted here...

Entered full site at ~105 days.

@PhiNotPi so what is your strat?

anyone know of an egg I can comamndeer

Anime won with a 280 just now so definitely keep ours under that.

@Runer112 for example tor.stackexchange.com
dunno, in the leaderboard any one that is in the end of the list I guess will work

whatever strategy people are employing right now, it's leading us in circles

That happened yesterday, it's so frustrating
