5:12 PM
woo, classes cancelled tomorrow!
still flooding

Have they tried turning the tap off?

So how bad was it there? We got a little rain this weekend from the outskirts as it passed, but nothing close to heavy.

let me try to find some pictures
There's no flooding where I physically am, but only a couple blocks away (down a hill)

even we are getting heavy rainfall since day before yesterday

Here it's sunny and supposed to get up to about 23°C today.

5:21 PM
that's because you migrated to the place after your last place flooded?

@Optimizer No

I didn't think birds were all that concerned with minor flooding anyway.

our football stadium

Whoa.

5:24 PM
Wow. Now it's a blitzball stadium :(

@Geobits sunshine is an issue.

I got that photo from a Yik Yak post titled "looks better than anything I've seen on that field this year"

On the bright side, your university's swim team now has a new place to hold their swim meets.

@NewSandboxedPosts LOL

5:28 PM
?

I'm trying to find the source of that image

No luck on Google Image Search...

well... I can't find an official source for that photo
video of miscellaneous flooding: weather.com/safety/floods/news/…

I think I might have found it, but the article got deleted and it wasn't on Wayback Machine....
It was too new, that's why it wasn't on Wayback.

weird, the soundtrack is totally different

5:34 PM
We're gonna need to think of another Peter challenge...

3 already!
What about Peter numbers?

First google result for "peter challenge": druckerchallenge.org

That's basically what I did.

Well, that and accuse a member of murder ;)

Well, rather, they were Brilland Numbers.

5:36 PM
@Optimizer There's only one Peter... but one is the loneliest number.

there are many Peter, just like there are many Alex

@Geobits Yeah that's why it didn't work. I hesitated to even post it in the Sandbox, but I thought it was funny enough of a concept that it would be worth considering...

You guys do realize that his profile says last seen just 12 hours ago, right? :P

That's when they found the body.
2

Sooo.... the body was on the site when they found it?

5:39 PM
Yes.

Yes, slumped over a computer with PPCG and a GolfScript interpreter open.

@minxomat ^

@AlexA. I'm no medical examiner, but I think that places the time of death long after your original comment.

5:41 PM
The body was only found recently. The case briefly went cold.

Q: Find our missing dead

Beta DecayChallenge Peter Taylor is dead, and there's no doubt about it. In his memory, you must write a program which determines whether a given user is alive or dead. Further Information A user is dead if they haven't been seen for more than a day, any less than that then they are alive. (Check the la...

@minxomat There's no way you wrote and submitted that in a minute and a half.
Peter's killer must be YOU!

I didn't.

Oh, okay.
Never mind then.

Yet another challenge falls victim to sandbox sniping.
RIP challenge

5:43 PM
@AlexA.
> @BetaDecay I doubt your challenge is fit for the main site, so I solved it in the sandbox. Was fun. :P

I'm not sure this challenge is good. How exactly should we get the "last seen" value?

@AlexA. You dare question minxomat's AutoIt skill?

^
:P

You guys are crazy. I'm glad nobody bothers with this kind of thing when I don't visit the site over a weekend.

@SvenTheSurfer I have no doubts about his superb AutoIt skills. But a minute and a half is superhuman.

5:45 PM
@AlexA. are you claiming that YOU is Peter's killer?

YOU created PPCG didn't s/he?

Actually, it was probably @ಠ_ಠ.

@BetaDecay Yes, YOU proposed PPCG on Area 51 5 years ago.

@quartata You have to either query or scrape the site, but T-SQL with the Stack Exchange Data Explorer is expressly forbidden.

@AlexA. Hmm. Sounds like effort.
:P

5:47 PM
And the rest of the challenges aren't? Sounds like the site needs some work.

@BetaDecay Is tavish your sock, or did you just pick a random profile to put on display? o.O

I incremented my user id
30526

You should use yourself. Again with the singling out random users.

Odd that you managed to capture a screenshot that says "0 profile views". I guess the current view doesn't count :)
Oh nevermind, it's still on zero. Caching.

@AlexA. I don't think I can view my own profile... Can I?

5:50 PM
Caching is @Geobits' new scapegoat.

Why shouldn't you?

@BetaDecay Uh... yeah.

@BetaDecay You can if you click the 'profile' tab.

^

It starts on 'activity' for yourself by default.

5:51 PM
Hmm... does curl come by default on most UNIX systems nowadays?
I was going to write something in bash...

@Geobits I can? Oh, well I've got to eat dinner so I'll do it in a bit

@quartata I don't remember having to install it on the latest Ubuntu.

Noice.

I have a theory, YOU proposed PPCG but then s/he got jealous of Peter's intelligence and popularity in the site..

@AlexA. Caching is possibly the oldest scapegoat on SE ;)

5:56 PM
I'll build a fence to stop the goats from 'scaping.

Sounds like you'll have a yard with Geobits and caching. They graze though, so no need to mow your lawn.

Geocaching?

If that's what you want to call eating Sven's grass like a goat then sure.

Geobits is so down to earth (eating the grass) that his profile pic indicates his location

Sven's a surfer. Most surfers I know don't have the kind of grass a goat would eat. They have the better kind.

5:59 PM
@Optimizer Oh, I thought the arrow was pointing to hell. :P

It's pointing at you in my last message.

haha
@Geobits You mean that doesn't grow in your back yard?

No :(
Not legal here. There was a ballot referendum, but it was a few points shy of the needed 60% IIRC.

There's tons of weeds in my backyard, but not the cool kind.

Idk, dandelions are pretty cool.

6:02 PM
Only once they go fluffy.

I wonder how close the ballot measure was in Washington.
My guess is 98% support in Seattle and 10% elsewhere.

> Florida Amendment 2 received 58% of the vote, short of the 60% required to pass in Florida.
^ medical only though
I believe it's going to be on the ballot in 2016 for full legality, but I'm not sure.

Stupid enter key

damnit! I missed that!

I can't stand drivers that use the turn lane as a merge lane :-/

6:10 PM
Please tell me you aren't SE chatting while driving.

I got over 95% of my road rage with years of experience, but this one pet peeve remains

@Geobits 55.7% in Washington.

6:20 PM
Yea, in Florida it went as an amendment rather than a "measure", so it required 60%.

why is there no undelete button

I hope no one beats me to a bash answer...
I've almost got it...

That should be a meta-red-tag, no? :P

@AlexA. Image has been changed

6:24 PM
A turn lane is a specific lane on the road where you wait to turn left or right onto another street.

And what is the difference to a merge lane?

When two lanes merge, one disappears gradually into the other in such a way that the traffic in that lane can slowly get over into the other lane.

If I understand his rage correctly, sometimes people get into a turn lane specifically because it's less crowded. Then use it to merge back into traffic later, essentially "skipping" in line. It can also cause slowdowns of the actual turn lane if people don't let him merge back in. It happens often here.

Ah so @rainbolt does not like it when people just use the turn lane to pass the guys waiting in the 'normal' lane and then try to merge into that one.

I'm no mind reader, but that's what I got out of it.

6:28 PM
I'm not a truck driver, but in all my years of driving I've never seen this happen here in Ohio.

@Geobits We all know that you can read minds, don't even think about lying!

I'm not an Ohioan, but you should try driving in Florida. People are idiots here.
@flawr I knew you were going to say that...

I always get driven around when I visit Florida!

@SvenTheSurfer On the other hand, are there cars in Ohio? Do people live there?

@flawr At least 1.
Also what gives, Ohio is a cool place. We have the Cleveland Browns... (The browns doesn't sound too good)

6:31 PM
Browns?

My bigger issue (although turn-lane-merging is annoying) is people that just don't use blinkers. It's not so bad when you're in a turn-only lane or something, but if you're in a turn-or-straight lane, use the damn blinkers.

I like people using the wrong blinker even more.

@flawr They are a football team that aren't good :|

@SvenTheSurfer I'm no English major, but the plurality in this sentence confuses me.

Hahaha

6:34 PM
Feel free to edit. I have noticed a fairly high amount of negation in my talking / texting as of late, and I am trying to be less negative.

hahahahhahahahhahhahahahaahahh
lol

I've only seen people complaining about others' driving, but surely not everyone is a good driver them-self.

Of course I am :D
But I guess you should define your metrics.

everyone except Geobits the posterchild of driving

6:38 PM
I've never gotten a ticket or caused an accident, if that counts.

What about parking tickets?

No, that counts as "a ticket" to me....

suspicious

That's pretty impressive.

I regularly speed, but nothing crazy. 5-10 MPH over normally.
I did get stopped once because a brake light was out, but no ticket.

6:40 PM
Geobits: Model citizen.

Hardly. I just know how to drive and have a decent situational awareness for cops ;)

Geobits: Knows how to drive.
Geobits: Evader of police.

Yea, that doesn't sound as good.
How about:

Geobits: Has been lucky for years
You'd be wrong there :P

:P

Q: URL shortener policy

GeobitsI haven't seen a discussion on this yet, but I also haven't really seen it used in answers, so I figured it was worth asking a question for link-reference in the future. So, what's the policy on using URL shortening services to reduce characters for golfs? This question made me think of it. Answ...

It existed before the challenge was posted, so it should be allowed if not explicitly forbidden.

Alright then.

Peter answered. :'( I remember him so fondly...

Make sure you tell him when he gets back in a few days.

Did anyone write an eulogy?

6:56 PM
@AlexA. ?

@Optimizer Peter answered to the question that geobits linked here.

oh

@flawr No, it's more like this. I want to turn using the turn lane. They want to merge using the turn lane. I can't stop because because I'm in a traffic lane. They can't stop because they are halfway into oncoming traffic. You can probably visualize a scenario where, if the timing was right, this could go horribly wrong.
I've always wondered, why are the stripes on turn lanes solid on the outside and striped on the inside?

It's supposed to mean you can go from striped to solid, but not the other way around. Seems weird to me for turn lanes though.

That's usually what it means. It's safe to cross over stripes but not solids. But how then would anyone ever enter a turn lane?

7:01 PM
At least around here, they don't usually go solid at first. They're just solid right near the intersection, where you should already be in the right lane.
I can't speak for the intelligence of city planners in Texas :P

Ah, I forgot about the gaps.
I think they paint the stripes and then forget to make gaps sometimes. The turn lane outside of my brand new apartment complex doesn't have the gap

We've got one intersection here that's been without lines at all for about 6 months. Three lanes each way, got repaved and never painted. It's a nightmare.

Okapi have stripes too.

@quartata The difference between cg.xyz and an "URL shortener" is that the former is pretty much universal, yet exclusive for this site. It also has no external resources, since the 301 it serves come from the CDN nameservers (which are the same nameservers SE uses, because we're on the same CDN :) [that is unless you spontaneously teleport across the globe every few microseconds :D]). I, personally, still wouldn't use it for serious challenges.
And I consider the Peter challenge neither serious nor good.

Q: How to make an array of first to elements in this specific array?

bvlA programming puzzle that is bugging me... Any help is welcome. (programming language agnostic, but JS would be welcome) I have arrays in variables that look like this (they come in combinations like this): Variable A: [ [ "foo", bar ] ] Variable B: [ [ "...

Oh look JS homework.

Do you even understand what he is asking? I don't
He somehow translated
[
    [
        "foo",
        "bar"
    ],
    "baz",
    "quux",
    "quuux"
]

 to

[
    ["foo","baz"],
    ["bar","baz"]
]
And the only hint I get is "get an array per variable with the first two elements"

7:33 PM
That actually makes sense to me... there's a list [foo,bar] of what the first element could be, and "baz" is the second element, so there's two possible combinations.
But then some of his other examples don't make sense either.

It's a permutation of the first element of each array against a constant element. But then again, I could be totally wrong.

Well, I spent more time trying to figure out his question than I have spent golfing in the last year.

Someone with more understanding should at least edit the title because I'm sure it'll confuse a lot of people as I didn't read the "to" as "two".
or just usher poor bvl away...

Q: Everyone Loves Pascal!

Michael ZiluckI know there have been a few different challenges where people have to print out Pascal's Triangle, but this one comes with a catch. You have to print out the first 20 lines of Pascal's triangle, but it has to be formatted with spacing so it looks pretty. This is code-golf so make it as short a...

8:22 PM
U?

I'm trying so hard to get this bash answer together but I'm so bad at regex....

Someone help me brainstorm a byte sequence for the pascal triangle challenge

abcd

/title=\"(.*)\"/ why isn't this working
I'm using grep -P but it doesn't seem to work...
I'm going to try the same regex in perl... I don't understand...

Why are you escaping the quotes?

8:23 PM
Try /title="([^"]+)"/

COuld you show the exact command you're using?

also, closed as unclear what you're asking

haha

what do you mean by "doesn't work"? -_-

curl -Ls codegolf.xyz/users`cat` | grep -P "/title=\"(.*)\"/"
oops, ate a slash...

8:24 PM
Was it tasty?

One second lemme post it on pastebin
Yes.

Or you could use code formatting for, ya know, code.

You can use code formatting in chat?
Oh.

First of all, grep will show the entire line and just highlight the match. You want grep -Po.

8:26 PM
Also, that's not how escaping quotes works in Bash
err, maybe it is. Wait, I think I'm confusing myself

Right, der.

Second, the regex in grep cannot have surrounding slashes.

ohhhhh

What exactly are you trying to match? The <title> tag?

The title format with the date.
This appears to match title=date though...
Hmm.

8:29 PM
Ah, sure.
grep -Po 'title="(.*)"' works then, but there are better ways.
grep -Po '(?<=title=")[^"]*' gets rid of the surrounding title=" and ".

Yeah that's what I was trying to do.
Although now that I think about it I could probably just do grep 'class=relativetime' and then just use cut.
Would probably be shorter.
Although....
Hmm actually probably not.
@Dennis I'll try this regex. Thanks.

Happy to help.

Dennis is good at helping.

How do you do the tags again?

Ah I see.

8:38 PM
Well then I'll just do it like this then.

[tag:✈✈💥flawr✈✈💥]
nope

@quartata Look at the edit history
@flawr Finally someone thinks so!

PS: If you can use rockets for taking of, why not using rockets for landing?

8:46 PM
Dang. The Pascal Triangle guy deleted his post.
I was close to a suggestion for an output format

That is absolutely awesome @flawr

Haha for a moment that comment was hateful

@Rainbolt It would have been closed anyway because of a duplicate.

I'm curious how the duplicates mandated their output format
Oh, it was just left justified

The spacing, if specified properly, should have made it different enough.

8:48 PM
That is waaaaaaay easier than what I was about to suggest
I almost commented with this: Let d be the largest number in the triangle. Let l be the number of lines in the triangle. Let n be the current line number, starting with line 1 at the top of the triangle. Let c be the current number. Line n is then 1+(l-n)*d spaces, followed by for each c on line n { c, followed by 1+2*d-length(c) spaces.}
Pretty sure I messed that up in more than one place

But it tries to account for the triangle needing to be fatter as the largest number gains digits

Hahaha

@AlexA. It should be 'is dead' though.

8:51 PM
Thanks, I'll fix it ASAP!

Could save you 2 bytes or so, too.

I'm giving up on this bash answer. Bash was not really made for this...
Maybe I could try a PHP answer... It would be pretty damn long though.

I don't want to be a spoilsport, but I once made a joke like this and kept it going for a few days, and the person turned to have indeed passed away (rather tragically). You don't exactly feel great if that happens. (Not that we have to worry about Peter, but take it as a kind warning before you feel like shit for a few days.)

@minxomat Turns out it was right in the golfed version (for which the bytes are counted) but incorrect in the expanded, ungolfed version.

Buzz killed.

8:53 PM
@AlexA. Still wrong for me in both.
It used to be right in the golfed one a few edits earlier.

@AlexA. You "fixed" the wrong one.

@minxomat @Dennis Okay, got it now. Thanks!
I kinda feel shitty now for participating in this challenge.

What do you think?

such a feminist! why can't guys hold flags!
what happened to gender equality!

(feminism is about equality, not about female superiority over males)

Very bad choice of words then.

It is.
> A feminist supports the rights and equality of women
I'll back down off of my soapbox now.

9:08 PM
@AlexA. obviously I know. Those ascii art are actually anti-femenist as they are kind of objectifying women. I was being sarcastic as usual.

@Optimizer Sarcasm isn't always easy to detect. Besides, it was an excuse to get on a soapbox for a couple of minutes. :P

I know its harder for bird-brains. I am not complaining!

That bird looks like it just told a bad pun and is waiting for the reactions.

> All women are the same!

9:13 PM
ಠ_ಠ
My girlfriend is not the same as my grandmother.
@minxomat It looks like a goose so you're probably right. :P

then how can your girlfriend be same as your grandfather?

(equality of men and women)

Any more guesses for how that was generated before I post the challenge? ^

I'm just gonna go to bed with this:
@Calvin'sHobbies what is it?

You're excited about CDN caching and it happens to be equal to browser caching.

Well, if ! is logical negation then =! would be the same as !=

There is a difference between "not equal" and negated arguments though.
In some languages.

I don't think so; one is a comparison, the other is an assignment.
