11:00 PM
My intention was to provide guidance, perhaps my English was not up the task

This is a. 1 rep user. Why start down voting?

Sjoerd, there's nothing that can be done if he doesn't answer comments

I do agree about the downvote
seems kinda rough

What would you do when you were attacked straightaway on your first post?

I would get out of there

11:01 PM
I wouldn't have asked that
honestly

The second question is not that bad. But the first one is horrible

Well, if it is your first time, I mean, c'mon, he may have just copied the code and he/she is being lazy to come up with a simplified version of what he wants to achieve

@jmlopez, perhaps it's just me, but I woulnd't
I would only ask for help in understanding, or guidance in learning or in ways to find a bug or something

@jmlopez laziness on his side is overwork on ours

I woulnd't post a bunch of code in any language and ask for help in making it do something

11:03 PM
No, it is also me. I wouldn't have done that. And If I do post something bigger, I always try to write comments to let people know what I am struggling with.

without showing interest in learning for the next time

Well, we can only hope that the user changes his mind and reads the comments and edits the questions and makes improvements.
Is there some guide about posting questions?

@jmlopez We can still reopen it and provide more guidance

If you want I'll vote to reopen
and behave
But I don't think it will happen, I have the feeling he is not interested in what this site is about

lol I think you guys are in good behavior

11:06 PM
@jmlopez The intention is never to hurt others, but to make the site useful

Not everyone wants to be a regular.

Sjoerd, questions like that help noone
not even him, to learn MMA

@belisarius, I agree, that is why I love this site and the community, I have learn tons by reading all of your answers and questions.

@jmlopez I love English. "your" is plural AND singular :D

oh crap, let me read that again.

11:08 PM
I hadn't realised that :)

oh lol
Very true, I thought you were saying that I wrote it wrong. You are just pointing it out.

The question's code is probably much more compact when copied to mma. Unfortunately, I'm confined to my iPad for the next couple of weeks...

I've learned tons too here

@jmlopez yes :D

@SjoerdCdeVries, we can reopen that one, if you vote I follow

11:10 PM
But, if that is the case, someone should try to make a simplified example

If I vote to open it's open...

Oh, ok
Then I cheer

@SjoerdCdeVries Poor you. Icelandic vacations on your poor man's iPad :D

Life's a drag

@jmlopez I agree, so that it remains useful. And it's 2 questions in 1

11:11 PM
voted to reopen

Following @beli

I think mathematica.stackexchange.com/faq should show one example of a bad question like the one we just saw and some hints as to how to make it in a useful question for the OP and the community.

It's open now. Thanks guys.

Ok, now we need to do something about it

I need mma on my iPad
Add a picture?

11:15 PM
We could, but I mean
to make it useful for others

@SjoerdCdeVries added

Now it's 2 questions in one

Well with a picture I could see what he's talking about.

Noone wanting to make a slider start somewhere will think this question has something to do

All this  \!(\ stuff makes reading it not easier
Noone is looking for confetti questions either

11:18 PM
That one is not work
It's fun
It's not supposed to help

There's a lot of highly upvoted nonsense around the site

even if it does teach in the process

We shouldn't take ourselves too seriously

I know, but the site is working great
If, what Leonid predicted, happens, then
it could be good or bad
I just thought it was a dangerous path to follow to answer these questions, many similar questions today
Very warm welcome to good willed noobs, or new users, guidance, etc, I agree
Always respectful, I agree too

I feel the allel questions were different. Mostly agree with you there

11:21 PM
but pity answers to questions of people that don't try, are a dangerous route

So, we should provide hints in comments
And not full answers

We can do that
but we can't control everyeone in here, hehe
Let's do that in this case anyway, probably you are right with this guy

Very true. Otherwise other users might be: "Oh, this is an easy question, reputation points, come to papa"

We have a meta on homework questions

Great
Positive reaction, makes him responsible for followup

@Rojo, nicely done

@OleksandrR, welcome

@Rojo hello!
Looks like the chat has been very active recently!

It has

A shame about the lawyers. But they are conservative creatures by nature. It's easy for them to say no.

Lawyers? Did I miss something?

WRI's lawyers do not like the proposed site logo.
I would be interested to know their reasons for that. Yes, the 2-d spikey looks a bit like the official one. But the name "Mathematica" is the actual trademark, but they don't appear to mind about that.

Did they get into contact with SE?

I'm not really sure. I think Brett put Jin into contact with the legal people.

There's no way they'd going to win that one

11:47 PM
@OleksandrR they will also sue you for your profile image, too similar to their logo

The whole spikey thing is a case of previous art

I can't help thinking that a better outcome may have resulted by not going to the lawyers directly; it seems highly unlikely to me that WRI would wish harm on a large number of their customers and a thriving community that is a big advertisement for their main product.

Darn autocorrect is making me crazy

In any case it makes no sense
The logo wasn't even 3D

The great stellated dodecahedron was published by Wenzel Jamnitzer in 1568

Also related to legal matters, I think we have to be careful with users posting code they didn't write themselves, as seems to have been the case with those questions discussed above. If they have no rights to the code they cannot post it here without violating either the SE terms and conditions (which require relicensing under CC-BY-SA) or the rights of the original author, or both.

But, @OleksandrR, how can that be controlled?
Google in their resuluts, youtube, etc, first accept and then respond to claims. There's probably no other way, right?

Edited RCHai's question, Check it

@Rojo it can't, I suppose. But where we have a strong suspicion that it's occurred, there is an argument for deleting the question.

I am all for the |sammaritan| badge

@OleksandrR there are divided positions about how much to assume and how much to close

Q: DynamicModule with constant image size

RChaiI am new to this forum - I wonder if someone can help me improve this code. I would like the angle $\theta$ to start in the middle of the slider i.e. $\theta = 0$ instead of starting at $\theta = -90$. How do I keep the circle size constant as I slide the $\theta$? Mohr[σxx_, σyy_, τxy_] := ...

@belisarius well, that is much better.

Well done @belisarius

@Rojo It was much more work than answering it

now I'll answer it :)
Nah, kidding
it shouldn't have been your job

11:58 PM
@Rojo go ahed. I have my downvoting cannon ready

and if the OP couldn't do it, then that should have been his first question
:P
