12:00 AM
@belisarius downvote me if you want
I don't care, I have cake
(no I don't)
and in any case, I'm already the good guy and you are the mean one, watch the comments

@SjoerdCdeVries I think the crux of it is that copyrights/trademarks are not like patents; prior art is not a consideration. The main problems are when a logo is sufficiently similar to another that it might create confusion, and that in order to retain rights over something you have to actively defend them and not just let others copy or modify your trademarks as they see fit.

@belisarius haha, I am still laughing at omega's comment
on the matrix question

@Rojo the odd thing is that all of this user's questions so far ask for formulae or code in some other language. This being the case, why ask them here?

It's ok, people asking anywhere to get guidance
but he got the guidance, to go to math.se
and he still expected the answer in here

I think there is nothing wrong with asking unrelated questions in the chat. But the main site is not the place for it.

acl
12:13 AM
@rojo and got it, too

R.M
@OleksandrR Even if SE has a case, it'll be bloody to fight it and there's no doubt who'll win the money war in SE vs WRI

@OleksandrR I agree, but they have no rep to chat, right?
Perhaps quick answers in comments and then deleting question is not that bad
but if they come back again
hehe

R.M
@OleksandrR I hadn't noticed that... it's true, all his questions are about algorithms/approaches and not really about mma.

then that becomes taking advantage of our niceness as RM said

R.M
I am glad you closed this question too late. Thanks to everyone... — Ωmega 25 secs ago
Cheeky

12:18 AM
Well, he didn't get what he wanted

@RM my point is I don't think WRI would sue what will probably become one of the major forums for Mathematica support over something like a similar-looking logo. What benefit would there be in that for them? So saying no makes their lives easier and ours more difficult but if someone else with some authority in WRI (e.g. Conrad Wolfram, Theodore Gray, both of whom seem like quite reasonable people) had asked them to say yes the outcome might have been different.

@OleksandrR Good point

R.M
@OleksandrR Reasonable people become unreasonable when it comes to protecting trademarks and patents. I'm bummed, but I don't blame them for fiercely protecting what's theirs. It might have been different, say, had you organized a free mma training for school students or something. There is no monetary involvement, is temporary in time, etc. But here, SE is a for-profit corporation that stands to (potentially) make money and fame by using something very close to what they've trademarked.

Well, abandon the ship then?

R.M
I like the spikeyness and the vibrant colours. We might have to abandon the hyperbolic pentagon, but we can try other options. I dislike the knot a lot — it is extremely generic and quite frankly, hard to relate it to mathematica

12:26 AM
@RM Working on it

R.M
Verbeia had some alternatives — hexagon/octagon/pentagon-without hyberbolic curves, etc

@RM you definitely can't blame the lawyers themselves; by saying no they're just protecting their clients' interests in the way that is least effort for them. I highly doubt they had heard of Mma.SE before. But even the slightest buy-in from someone high up at WRI (a few positive words about the site) could have tipped the balance of the best interest judgement from "no" to "yes".

but not very successful :D

R.M
By chipping away at the old design, you can create something pretty with the innards:
I'm fiddling around with these (this is from a while ago) and Jin said he's sending samples to their lawyers

12:31 AM
The flower doesn't ring a mma bell

Yes, I agree. I suppose though we can't really be sure what WRI thinks of this site officially. What is pretty clear to me is that the answers one gets here are better than will normally come from Premier Support, which I suppose they have an interest in continuing to sell.

R.M
@belisarius spiderman meets mma?

@RM Why not?

Premiers service is also free updates, the workbench, webmma etc.

12:33 AM

@belisarius too intricate for a logo

fat spikes

@SjoerdCdeVries yes, and that is a good reason to buy it, of course. But I think that's not how they like to sell it: rather they say you can just ask any question and get expert advice.

R.M
@OleksandrR can you ask your way to solving a project ;)

The infamous External`SolveMyproblem[]

12:36 AM
@RM it's been a while since I had an active Premier Service account and I never asked any questions, so I don't know. :) I think consultancy is beyond the scope of PS, but for any other questions, it seems they will usually oblige.

@RM How could I colorize those monstrosities?

I only used it for bug reports

R.M
What's their turnaround time? I reckon there's some support guy sitting at the computer and I wonder if it might be faster for him to ask on mma.se and get back to the customer than solving it himself

@RM From where do you think we are getting our questions?

The problem with mathematica.stackexchange.com/questions/8327/… is probably the definitions before the DynamicModule, right? Wouldn't that be the generisable problem @rojo et al. were looking for?

R.M
12:40 AM
@belisarius You could maybe use JM's PolygonCentroid (see addendum here) and colour them according to radial distance

@RM Thanks. I will give it a try

@SjoerdCdeVries I don't know, I still run away when I see CDF. I don't understand what's allowed and what's not
A growing community only adds value to them

Got to get some sleep now. Bye all!

@SjoerdCdeVries bye!!

Bye Sjoers

12:44 AM
@RM Mine are beziers ...

@acl What do you mean with "got it too"?

R.M
@belisarius oh.. hmm.

acl
"and he still expected an answer here" and got it too (about the matrix guy)

ugly

@Rojo one would think so. On the other hand, the real question may be how they regard a growing community that they have no control over. For example, you can't compare to (or even mention) other products on MathGroup.

12:50 AM
@OleksandrR Well, I believe they are terribly wrong if they think the cons outweight the possible benefits
and it means they trust their product very little

acl
@oleksandr makes you want to call this site matlabmaple.se just to show them, doesn't it

R.M
@belisarius maybe ugly and hideous spikey is the way to go... then we can be like — "You think this looks like your logo? Are you saying Michael Trott has terrible taste in graphic design?" to their lawyers

Furthermore, they can't stop it

@Rojo Many companies are against the "users group" phenomena

so they better play nice

R.M
12:51 AM
@Rojo or they think their product speaks for itself and user groups like ours don't really matter (or is a tiny drop in the ocean)

@RM Users groups are a form of pressure. Companies don't like pressure

@RM The other day I saw with belisarius that my first question ever, in the mathgroup, was answered by 2 people, Szabolcs and leonid

@Rojo yes, I agree. Definitely we are not out to cause any harm to WRI (quite the opposite). But whether or not their strategy incorporates or allows for sites like this is another matter.

In here I know almost noone that uses Mathematica
I do as much as I can to make it more popular around me because I like it
and I thing the steep learning curve is worth it
but, it just isn't popular enough

@Rojo me too. The tools other people use seem terrible in comparison.

12:53 AM
In any case, I feel way more at ease with the software since I'm around this site
and WRI benefits from that

@Rojo But if you join 1000 experts saying that a product feature is badly designed, you are in trouble

If there's something I hate about WRI is it's marketing
but, if apart from picturing everything they do as first-of-the-kind-best
they are actually afraid of being more well known
outside their scope of manipulatoin
then that's lame
I'm not saying I hate their marketing particularly, I dislike marketing in general, and they happen to be the marketing I often see...
A huge industry dedicated to manipulate, hehe

@Rojo The other way is open source. Nothing in between

They've already taken a blog post from this community
I think it sells Mathematica quite well :)

@Rojo user groups are not a selling strategy. But they are clearly a satisfaction enhancer

1:08 AM
@belisarius well, it might encourage repeat business if people say how great all the new-in-9 features are.

@OleksandrR Ask Mr. Wizard

@belisarius version 8 is good, no question. But I still use 7 from time to time.

@belisarius reminds me of his mouth

@OleksandrR My favorite movie :D

1:12 AM
The shape itself looks like a shuriken, I think
@RM I like the flower-like shape. Nobody could say that looks like a spikey, either.

R.M
@belisarius That's actually closer to theirs... they use something like this (a 2D projection of the spikey) for the CDF loading page

Eureka! Eureka!
How about this one?
I am sure it isn't copyrighted

@belisarius definitely not when combined in a collage with the Coca Cola, Pepsi, McDonalds, Nike, and Apple logos!

@OleksandrR Look at the tongue. It is pointy. Perhaps WRI (or Dilbert) have copyrighted that piece

aaaand
finally
my grandmother appeared
I can start dropping my bad mood, little by little

1:25 AM
:)

@Rojo Start removing today downvotes

Voting to reopen

Just in case someone wants the code to experiment
Needs["PolyhedronOperations`"];
d = "Dodecahedron";
k = PolyhedronData[d, "SkeletonGraph"];
vc = PropertyValue[k, VertexCoordinates]
Style[Show[
Graphics[{BezierCurve[#, SplineDegree -> 2]}] & /@ ((vc[[#]] & /@
List @@@ EdgeList[k]) /. {x_, y_} -> {x, .3 Mean[{x, y}], y})],
Antialiasing -> True]
changing the .3 gives you different spikes

I admire your work
and all of you, visual gurus

@Rojo You are going to be expelled

1:32 AM
:(

por chupamedias. translate that

An image says everything
does it?

that is a sock sucker. Try again

Haha
A suck up
Now I have 2 options: try to plot the letris board, something I suck at but want to do... oor, some CUDA stuff, something I have to do
Welcome 25K man

1:38 AM
Horrible work, horrible

thanks

@Rojo I've seen worse, but I can't recall where. :)

Haha

haha

1:41 AM
@belisarius you could improve that with Opacity[0]

just dropped in for a little sarcasm. Night all.

@Rojo You are really helpful
@rcollyer Nights!

@Rojo Me? Thanks. I was reading above.

@MrWizard Hi!

R.M
@MrWizard oh, how innocent. like there's any other at the moment... ;)

1:44 AM
@MrWizard Yes, you're the only 25k man

@RM belisarius is at 52.9 on the network. I'm still trying to catch him.

The only >2 x Rojo man

Then there is that top guy from EE who's been asking interesting questions.

R.M
@MrWizard Network rep doesn't matter, does it?

This guy:
@RM Only not to you because you didn't link your accounts. ;-p
@RM What's your current total if you had?

1:46 AM
@MrWizard I participate in cooking

@belisarius I participate in The Great Outdoors, though I fear it isn't going to survive.
(removed)? Darn you're shy, R.M. :-)

@MrWizard Yeah. It rains too much out there

R.M
but chat rep counts all accounts, unlike the flair which counts sites with 200+ rep. So technically, you could get ~9k for free if you just created an account on each site

@RM I don't understand that.

R.M
what you see here is the rep as seen by chat.se, and it counts even sites with 101 rep (where the +100 association bonus is given for free)

1:49 AM
@RM Ah, got it now.

Thank you

This question was never answered to my satisfaction:

Q: Internal "Periodical" functions in version 7

Mr.WizardIn version 7 there exist these Internal` context functions: ?Internal`*Periodical* AddPeriodical   Periodicals   RemovePeriodical   $ThisPeriodical In a comment to this answer Szabolcs stated that these "seem to provide very similar (the same?)...

1:52 AM
@Verbeia Too botanic

I am hoping for a v7 implementation of these functions such that I can run v8 code using these functions correctly.

less orange-red, more purple and gold; seven point star; not a hyperbolic curve

R.M
@MrWizard or you can just get v9 ;)

@Verbeia What's that for?

@belisarius no worries - how would you tweak it?

R.M
1:53 AM
@MrWizard the site logo

@RM I thought that was settled. What happened?

@MrWizard trying to come up with a logo that is not five-pointed, not hyperbolic stellation and we still like.

R.M
We got sued (or will be)

Really? Really?

@Verbeia I think the "petals" are too much "petallic"

R.M
1:54 AM
yesterday, by Jin
well, it's my goal not to get sued :) I respect their opinion and thanks @BrettChampion for giving me the heads up before the site launch!

how about

@Verbeia Better. Could you turn it reddish?

I have to go out now and am flying tonight. but I'll add this to the post in meta.mathematica.stackexchange.com/a/555/8
Yes, but I thought purple might be less legally problematic

R.M
@Verbeia when you come back, we'll have an ascii art of wolfram's face as the logo. You can't copyright a face

@Verbeia They can't legally reserve the red color ... I think

R.M
1:57 AM
@belisarius you think? Tell that to ferrari

Nope, They can't reserve @Rojo

Let's just use RandomChoice to choose the logo, to show Mathematica's ability of help in hard decisions

I vote to use Lena, and stop thinking about it

@RM Okay, who's going to be first to make a user script that restores the Old logo across the design?

I vote for theBeethoven's bust

R.M
1:58 AM
@Rojo Or put the NKS book through one of those "Will it Blend" videos and take a picture of the result for the logo

Hahaha

R.M
@Rojo It has to be inside a chinese temple

Haha

R.M
@MrWizard Good idea. Halirutan's pretty good with JS... shouldn't be hard to poke him :)

A shredded piece of paper with a word cloud of most common MMA symbols, stained with an ink blot
or a jigsaw puzzle of that

R.M
2:00 AM
you can make that logo while slicing a bagel

under a confetti rain

R.M
and then read the declaration of independence Leonid's answer

@belisarius versions posted in that answer

haha
Preamble

@Verbeia Nice. I regret WRI requiring all this work

R.M
2:04 AM
I'd do anything to have a logo like the old one... or something along those lines. This is so not appealing:

@belisarius I define messing around in Mathematica as a leisure activity

This is clearly the logo we need:
user image
2
:o)

R.M
lol!
belisarius' gravatar provides a good backdrop for the hypnotoad

BTW I think if we have a seven-pointed logo, the accepted answer should be a light green flat mildly stellated six-pointed star. The badges will be 3, 4 and 5 points, so the theme is "slightly pointy" rather than "five points". Even less Mma-logo-ish

Rojo and Verbeia I was going to put you in too but it became unrecognizable.

R.M
2:06 AM
You head that Rojo? You make the site look ugly :P
Now go clean up your mess

R.M
@belisarius -1 no beethoven.

@RM You could read The Clockwork Orange while looking at it

The knot is too flowerish
The knot + the pattern

@MrWizard HEY! MY AVATAR IS COPYRIGHTED

2:14 AM
@belisarius Bite my shiny metal ass, meatbag!

@belisarius I thought you said you don't care about illegal
or immoral

@MrWizard How do you knew?

@belisarius darn, YouTube failed me for the reply. :-p

@Rojo I don't care. YOU should

R.M
@MrWizard Your googling skills are bad, and you should feel bad
woop woop woop woop

2:17 AM
@RM hehehe

@RM, yes, that's what I had, I should have mentioned that.

So about those v7 Periodical functions; has anyone looked at the v8 functions to see if they are implemented in terms of these (behind ReadProtected)?

I'm using those bookmarks on facebook now, but now I want to be able to use the backticks
@RM, I actually made a question on stackoverflow: stackoverflow.com/questions/11488665/…

@MrWizard At least RunScheduledTask is not read protected and you can see nothing
Same for the others
but let me hooook

2:20 AM
@Rojo Okay. If anyone can do what I'm asking I will Bounty that question.

@MrWizard traceinternal?

@belisarius TraceInternal shows nothing interesting so far

@belisarius I don't care how it's done. It seems like it should be possible to make v7 compatible with the v8 functions but since I don't have v8 I cannot compare them.

R.M
@jmlopez Ok, you probably might want to search for "markdown" and then some keywords in JS that do what you want

Ok, ok
Let me give it a shot for a few minutes and I'll let you know, @Mr.Wizard

2:22 AM
@Rojo Cool. :-)

Then you help me plot some nice scrabble pieces for the letris
Hehe
Be back

@Rojo I'm not much of an artist but okay.

R.M
@Rojo would the tiles in my boggle answer help? With larger letters and a more appropriate font?

@MrWizard yep, they are
implemented on V7 primitives

@belisarius How were you able to determine that?

2:30 AM
@MrWizard I redefined InternalAddPeriodical[x___]`
to Print[x]
and then I run
StartScheduledTask[t]

Ah, that should do it. Please look a bit deeper. If you are confident that you can implement the v8 functions in v7 I will start the bounty.

Nope I am not sure yet
mmm I made some mistake ... not working now
@MrWizard Here it is
RemoveScheduledTask[ScheduledTasks[]];
t = CreateScheduledTask[Print[DateString[]]]
Internal`Periodicals[]
ScheduledTasks[]
(*
ScheduledTaskObject[7ScheduledTaskObject[7,Print[DateString[]],{1,[Infinity]},A‌utomatic,False]
{Print[DateString[]]}
*)
So, Periodicals reports the tasks created by CreateScheduledTask
And also
/////////////
RemoveScheduledTask[ScheduledTasks[]];
t = Internal`AddPeriodical[Print[DateString[]], 2]
Internal`Periodicals[]
ScheduledTasks[]
reports the task as created
So the answer is yes
@MrWizard You here?

2:47 AM
Yes, I'm here. Trying desperately to make sense of what you're posting. :p

And RemoveScheduledTask[ScheduledTasks[]] removes the tasks created by Addperiodical
@MrWizard What I am trying to say is that both implementations are almost the same

Summarize for me: can you make v7 run v8 code? (using only the functions under discussion, of course)

@MrWizard Not out of the box, because v8 implements queueing and v7 does not

Give me an example, please.

ok here it goes
v8 implements two primitives for starting a task:
Create AND Run
While for v7, there is only one
AddPeriodical
So in v8 you can prepare your tasks in advance, and then fire them at will

2:52 AM
@belisarius I guess I overlooked that. Still, if you are willing to put together everything you've found out and make as much as possible of the v8 functions work on v7 I will start the bounty.

@MrWizard Nah, I will help you if you need it. No bounty nedded

I appreciate that attitude, but I'm also happy to put a bounty on something that is essentially a code request.
(in this case I cannot do the work myself...)

@MrWizard The problem is that I don't have v7 at hand, so my testing is very doubtful

@belisarius I think Rojo has both. Let me check the chat logs from yesterday (or the day before?).
Oleksandr and rcollyer gave results for both v7 and v8 but not Rojo so I don't know.
I'm going to take a look through the questions posted in the last 24 hours. @Ping me if you want my attention.

@MrWizard I am looking at v7 docs, and I am afraid that there is a lot of functionality missing in the implementation. One should create a full emulation shell to be able to use v8 functionality. It is not only a matter of translating function arguments, but setting up data structures and triggers. Something like a 2 days work, I believe.

3:07 AM
@belisarius Ouch. I had no idea, really. I'll settle for hacking out my own little alarm applications and the like. Seriously, please don't put more work into it; v7 is becoming an antique.
@Rojo that goes for you too

@MrWizard I want to give you an example
CreateScheduledTask[expr, timespec, start]
creates a task that will evaluate expr according to timespec starting at start time.
///
v7 does not have starting times
and you have to set up a data struct to store these until you decide to Run the task
so you need a trigger
and that trigger should run the task
but you also need to be able to abort the trigger
and that is not implemented in v7
so you need Java code
I believe ...

3:42 AM
I didn't get pinged well
@MrWizard

@Rojo Everybody sleeping

3:59 AM
@Rojo @belisarius still here?

Yeah

I would like to take action on this proposition:
0
A: Tags: "patterns" & "pattern-matching"

Mr.WizardI'm not certain these should be merged. If they are, I feel that pattern-matching should be the master. It is used preferentially: 54 versus 15 questions at this time It is not easily confused with design patterns pattern-matching is at the heart of Mathematica; not having such a tag seems wro...

and yeah, I think what you want of scheduled tasks can be done

There was not a strong opinion from the community one way or the other, so I'll take the lead.

Just need to give it the shape of v8
Let me read that meta

4:01 AM
@Rojo If it's going to take as much work as belisarius said I'd rather you didn't bother.

Let me read up what belisarius said

ok

Well, it all depends on the level of similarity you want, but I think something reasonable can be done in another half hour. I was worried about the repetition limits, but it can be done
Now, the meta, brb
I think I'm for merging patterns into pattern-matching

So you're against my experiment?
Or perhaps I should say, you're for immediate action on the merge proposal?

Yeah, I don't think the complication is worth it, and I woulnd't be sure what question about patterns isn't indirectly about making apattern that matches

4:09 AM
1
Q: Rename tag macosx to mac-os-x

Mr.WizardMay we please rename macosx to mac-os-x? At first glance I thought the first form read macros. I believe the hyphenated form is more readable.

I gave some examples of questions I thought could be tagged "patterns" -- have you looked at those?

yes
and most of them I think fit quite well in pattern matching
well enough at least
For example, the one on performance, is really about matching speed

Okay, I guess it's my own peculiarity. I shall propose patterns as a synonym for pattern-matching now. Vote for it if you care to.

@RM Sure they may work, could you link me to the question?

Done.

4:11 AM
@MrWizard where do I vote?

R.M

A: Using Mathematica's Graph functions to cheat at Boggle

R.MMy solution is a recursive tree traversal algorithm which seeks and searches neighbouring vertices only if it will lead to a word (e.g., Something starting with ZQ is immediately disqualified), but it's faster than yours because I construct the adjacent vertices list from the adjacency matrix rat...

@RM Thanks

R.M
@Rojo It's the vertexFun function in the final code block
Voted.
JUST MODAPPROVE IT ALREADY!!
:D

@RM What's wrong with getting community approvals?

R.M
4:16 AM
hehe, just kidding around... The :D not enough?

@RM He is a populist
@Rojo That link is for you

Haha

R.M
@belisarius I thought you were trying to imply a populist Mr.Wizard

@RM Well ... yes

R.M
I don't get it... why would Rojo appreciate it more? Is he Argentinian?

4:22 AM
@RM Shhhh it is a secret

R.M
Is he the guy whose name is close to Pino Grigio?
pinochet

Ehm

@RM No, that one is Peron

That's on the other side of the mountains

R.M
Oh, right. Chile

4:23 AM
@RM You mean Pinocchio
:)
@Rojo I think we should ask Mr. about what is he planning to do with the scheduledtasks thing. I pondered about a full implementation, and it is really hard. You are saying it is "easy". I believe we are talking about different objectives.

@belisarius I am not saying it is easy

oh. sorry I misunderstood you

I mean, there are intermediates, and that the part that I didn't know if it would be possible (the count, and that) I think I could sort it
so, I see the way. Then, the more you want it to be exactly like v8, the more time it will take
As you said, it depends on the objectives
What do you see as the most bothersome part?
Grr nosebleed, brb

@Rojo Damn. Perhaps you are too young. But this is a pity: clarin.com/espectaculos/Murio-Jorge-Luz_0_737326451.html

I don't know him :P

4:33 AM
@Rojo Oh, he was a very good actor

I see

:5367760

4:55 AM
esa escena en que él está en la bañadera todo cubierto de espuma
@MrWizard, I think I got something, let me test it
