5:20 PM
Anyone around?

Here
with a couple of patys in front of me
@belisarius

@Rojo Hi! You should eat better

Should
not must

I am writting a meta post, but I want some feedback before posting it

That's enough for me

5:29 PM
take a look at these qs
0
Q: Modifying a plot

AlelIn the notebook below, how can I: Make the plot as large as the light blue area Set initial values for the sliders Make the MousePosition appear at the tip of the arrow instead of at the bottom of the panel For the last slider (the time) slider, I would like to use two sliders instead one to se...

Q: DynamicModule with constant image size

RChaiI am new to this forum - I wonder if someone can help me improve this code. I would like the angle $\theta$ to start in the middle of the slider i.e. $\theta = 0$ instead of starting at $\theta = -90$. How do I keep the circle size constant as I slide the $\theta$? Mohr[σxx_, σyy_, τxy_] := ...

both were posted today

Suspicious
Let me read your meta post

not finished yet, but I think the code was not written by the OPs in both cases

I agree

Too trivial questions

In any case
I think that
when you actually have tried something, you have reduced your doubts to more fundamental base cases

5:33 PM
yes, and the code is far too complex for those trivial qs
so I think there are TWO problems
1) code attribution
2) Is this HW?

I don't think it's a problem if they didn't write that
is it?
as long as they are not just wanting us to tweak it for them
We shouldn't accept "easily reduceable bunch of code" questions

nope, but they should declare it. There may be copyright issues

Yeah, true
It's impossible for them to know string representation of boxed
boxes
and not know any of those things they ask

Imagine an employee posting anonymously his company's code
@Rojo Yep
impossible
Am I becoming paranoid?

No
I'm voting for close

5:37 PM
(no puns) :D
Ok. I follow

@belisarius That one shows some resemblance with this one

@Heike Hi

@belisarius Hi @belisarius

@Heike Yes, very similar
I think we should close them and leave a clear comment

But that one's way less bad

5:39 PM
@belisarius Wait, those questions were by the same user.

@Heike I saw that

In order to use Mathematica, they should first try to learn Mathematica
and we are here for that

@Heike And look at this one
1
A: Manipulate does not accept constant (i.e. just number) as upper limit for variable

belisariustf[o_, z_] := TransferFunctionModel[o^2/(s^2 + 2 z o s + o^2), s] f[t_, o_, z_] = OutputResponse[tf[o, z], UnitStep[t], t]; Manipulate[Plot[f[t, o, z], {t, 0, 20}, PlotRange -> {0, 2}], {{z, 0.2}, 0.1, 1.4}, {{o, 1}, 0.5, 4}]

@Rojo That never stopped me from playing around with Objective C :-)

@Heike but I don't think you downloaded some incomprehensible Google Code, went to an Objective C forum, and asked how to tweak the code so that it did what you wanted
My point is
I don't think that by answering those questions the OP is learning much

5:42 PM
@belisarius The avatar of the OP of that question is the same as the one of Alel.
@Rojo I'm not that suicidal.

@Heike Look at the plots ... The PROBLEM is the same

@belisarius It's the same user.

What's the correct reason for voting to close?

@Rojo For what question?

@Rojo "You are cheating" ?
@acl Hi!

5:45 PM
The ones with big bunch of codes that ask you something very particular of that problem... Even if a good honest question could be interpreted from that, it's not what they are asking.. . I'd say "too localized"?
In fact, he asks 4 things in the same question so it's unsearchable

R.M
@Rojo too localized

and untitleeaable

R.M
That code block is way too big for it to be useful generally for such a small problem

@belisarius tf is the same as here

R.M
I don't think those are uncommon TFs

5:47 PM
@RM Of course not, but very similar questions

R.M
Oh, I completely agree with that. It looks like they just copied the code from somewhere and now just want us to tweak it so that they can turn it in as an assignment

@RM And the code is far too complex for those trivial qs

@belisarius And identical notation.

Should I delete my answer?

R.M
It's a bad copy paste... people usually fall in two categories — they use a space for Times or they use *. Usually they don't mix the two unless it's copy-pasted + edited + tweaked

5:52 PM
@RM I don't mind code tweaking, but source attribution and reducing the problem to its minimal expression are a must

@RM But unless we can locate the source, we don't know for sure. He could have been given the code by his supervisor or so.

R.M
Why do people want to work without Manipulate? For example, questions like this. I can't see how that would be a useful homework question. It doesn't seem like they're building something either...

@Heike Yep. Or his boss

I am against answering questions in which the OP isn't trying to learn MMA, but to get a result
and I am against answering questions in which the OP hasn't reasonably tried

R.M
Me too... I think we should be more aggressive in closing such questions

5:54 PM
@RM looks like HW

@belisarius We'll know for sure if the OP asks the mods to delete his question after he's been given the answer.

@Heike Had that occured yet with another Qs?

R.M
I don't know if some people (newer users) don't vote to close because they think a moderator will do it, but it always looks better if 5 users from the community do it

@belisarius Once that I know of.

Read the comment the Op leaved here

A: Modifying a plot

belisariusClearAll[w, z]; tf[w_, z_] := TransferFunctionModel[w^2/(s^2 + 2 z w s + w^2), s] f[t, w, z] = OutputResponse[tf[w, z], UnitStep[t], t]; Panel[DynamicModule[ {z = 1/2, w = 5, TimeInit = 50, TimeEnd = 75}, Column[{Grid[ {{"z", Slider[Dynamic[z], {0, 2.0}], Dynamic[z]}, {"w[rad/s]", ...

weird
What should we do?
Invite him to this chat is an option

5:58 PM
It's not weird
He's lying

R.M
@belisarius he can't chat... low rep

acl
@belisarius hi

@RM So we have to upvote first?

@Heike Haha

R.M
lol

5:59 PM
That's a bit of a dilemma.

the line {z = 1/2, w = 5, TimeInit = 50, TimeEnd = 75} initialize his values. He is not reading my code

R.M
Well, I guess for now we just assume that they wrote the code... no point in badgering someone, accusing them of something when we can't prove it

He is plainly lying
Don't waste your time

I'm tempted to give a hint without trying to give the answer away.

@RM it can be proven enough for me

R.M
6:02 PM
I wouldn't waste time, but I'd keep a note of this person... such folks always have a pattern

+1 for not waste time
Close and move on
He made me angry by lying there

R.M
@Rojo I agree and I think they're lying too, but bullying is not going to help. This is the same as the homework crowd on SO who just beat everyone that asks a noob question with a hammer

@RM I'm not pro wasting time in comments either
or on him
but I'm pro not having patience either

R.M
We can 1) not answer and only provide hints 2) ignore or 3) answer :)
I vote for 1 and when they're on the right track, vote to close and nuke

1 only makes sense
as a subtle mean of making him quit

acl
6:04 PM
@belisarius I was thinking the same thing

He knows not much MMA, and if that's the case, he can't expect to be doing those interactive things in a week
Whatever we do, he must realise he will not get results from MMA without trying to learn it first, just because we are here
I mean, his followup question of initializing the slider, not only is explicit in belisarius code, but explicit in the Slider docs

@RM I'm for 1 as well.

We have other options, but they are not legal in all countries

@belisarius "Everything fun in life is either illegal, immoral, or fattening"

@Heike In don't care much about illegal and immoral

6:11 PM
I vote for making him work for an answer

Ok. I deleted my answer

Make him improve his question, reduce it, until it becomes useful for others too, or at least a little bit
and maybe do that with a smile, and not in my bad mood because I can't find my grandmother, hehe

@Rojo You lost your grandmother?

@Heike No, I hope not. It's just not normal for her to go out of her home, let alone in cold weather, and she isn't there since the morning. I just went there
(At least since this morning)
Fortunately, it all looks like she left on purpose, leaving everything neat

@Rojo It's Saturday and sunny ... let her stroll

R.M
6:15 PM
FindGeoLocation["Grandmother"]

Ok. I deleted my answer, and posted a comment

+1ed your comment

acl
6:34 PM
@belisarius omega and zeta seem popular choices for vars

@acl yes. The issue is not clear enough for me to claim some kind of misbehavior, but I am suspicious.

acl
well, give some hints and leave it at that, I'd say. no point in making noise about it
@belisarius aside: Peenemunde is close to here. I think I'll detour to the museum there tomorrow on the way back

6:57 PM
Does anyone know how to get markup to behave in a list?

@acl Seems there is a nice museum there!
@Heike Sample?

R.M
@Heike needs to be indented further

@belisarius For example in this question I tried to format the code block by putting 4 space in front of it like usual, but that didn't work which was caused by the enumerated list directly above it. Putting in a <pre><code> block worked, but I was wondering if there is a way using the normal shortcuts.

R.M
for example, code needs 8 spaces, paragraphs and figures will need a space at the beginning to be considered part of the list

@RM Oh, ok. I went to 6 but gave up after that.

R.M
7:05 PM
I just found this today and I love it (I wish I had known about this earlier)

Q: Better handling of indentation and the TAB key when editing posts

balpha About This user script changes the behavior of a few keys (most notably the Tab key) within the post editor to behave more like it does in IDEs or text editors: When multiple lines are selected, Tab and Shift-Tab indent and dedent these lines When nothing is selected, Tab and Shift-Tab i...

Is there an easy way to indent a block of text by 8 spaces (pressing ctrl-k twice just de-indents the text).

R.M
heh, I'm a precog

@RM Looks like it.

@Heike List levels are recognized in four spaces quantum leaps
try

Niiiiiiice
Hey guys
Let me know if any of you have heard of or found previously any of these notebook options
EventHandlerMethod
AutoIndentSpacings
WindowWarp
Ohh, doesn't matter, I'll play around

R.M
I've set AutoIndentSpacings and I think I've played with WindowWarp too... the first one looks familiar, but I don't remember

7:45 PM
Niiiiiiiiiice
Now, what could we do tweaking drag and drop behaviour of selection inside the notebook

2 hours later…
9:53 PM
Picasso's version

Nice nose

"nose" or "no sé" ? or both?

Haha

@Rojo Comes from a dodecahedron transform. Much transformed.

@belisarius I almost thought it came from a freehand line

9:57 PM
nope

which would also be entirely created in MMA

just impure math
Needs["PolyhedronOperations`"];
d = "Dodecahedron";
k = PolyhedronData[d, "SkeletonGraph"];
Show[Graphics[{BezierCurve[#,
SplineDegree ->
10]}] & /@ (vc[[#]] & /@ (FindShortestPath[EdgeDelete[k, #],
First@#, Last@#] & /@ EdgeList[k]))]

Part::partd: "Part specification vc[[{1,15,10,9,14}]] is longer than depth of object."

add
vc = PropertyValue[k, VertexCoordinates]
after k def

Niiiice
(not really)

9:59 PM
:D

OHHH
You mean MMA

DynamicModule isn't respected as a scoping construct. Try x /. i_ :> InputForm@HoldForm@DynamicModule[{x}, i]
I just got bitten by this. I have to remember to say this in the letris blog post
I had somehting like
control[var_]:=DynamicModule[{x}, sth]
control being HoldFirst, receiving a variable to be dynamically updated, etc
like Slider or whatever
and I got bitten when I used "x" as var

yep
been there

So I'll use formal x in dynamic module I guess
Any better idea?

10:09 PM
If I remember well, \Formal is the easiest way out

Yeah
versus the abstruse Module[{x}, DynamicModule[{x}

Nahhhhhhhhhhhhhh
dont do that
anyway, I think WRI should rethink the "Dynamic" thing. It is too convoluted

I wonder if Mr.Wizard would do {x}~Module~({x}~DynamicModule~(stuff))

Just dont tell him

I think I'm finally starting to more or less understand it
I don't know if other languages have similar constructs

10:14 PM
the uncoupling of the FE and the kernel is needed, I know. But perhaps there is a better way

but, if not, I think the main problem is that one
Noone knows much how to structure code that is not so basic and dynamic
Noone is an exaggeration of course

Ok. perhaps one

That's why I'm trying to do this blog post
I mean, I don't know either, but
lots of things come to mind while I'm doing this, interesting to share
For example

@Rojo "If you can't write it, you don't understand it"

I agree
So far I haven't done anything of the game, but
I've done the basics of the GUI
Screens with buttons
that lead you to other screens
to set settings, player names, see ranking
and only running short cells, one screen at a time, quite neat
`GUI`flowRules={
"MainPage"->{
"New game"->"GamePage",
"Highest scores"->"HighestScoresPage",
"Settings"->"SettingsPage"
},
"GamePage"->{
"Done"->"MainPage"
},
"HighestScoresPage"->{
"Back"->"MainPage"},
"SettingsPage"->
{"Done"->"MainPage"}};

10:21 PM
@Rojo NEVER tried to do that
sounds nice

Yeah, I'm discovering it on the go
But, for example
there was once a question in here about DynamicWrapper
and what it's for
The answers more or less were "yeah, basically, it's almost useless when you have Dynamic"
but I find it terribly good to organize the dynamic code and make it efficient
You can separate what you show, putting Dynamic[variable] in the small parts where you need dynamic things, and then in another part just decide what updates what
And if you do Fold[DynamicWrapper, interface, Unevaluated{update1, update2, ...}]
update1, update2, etc, are all done independently of each other

Q: How to demonstrate our enthusiasm for the product when newbie questions descend?

VerbeiaLeonid predicted that, as the site became better known, we would get more newbie questions. Questions like this one. I don't think we have yet seen an avalanche of such questions, but inevitably we'll get a few each day. In responding to these questions, I hope we never lose sight of what made u...

Folks, have some patience with new users. Please!

@SjoerdCdeVries you're referring to Alel?

@SjoerdCdeVries HI!

Among others
Hi too

10:29 PM
It's not about newbie questions, @SjoerdCdeVries
Not in his case

I saw a whole string of low rep posts either being closed or treated a bit hostile

@SjoerdCdeVries I brought the case here for shared tratment

by the same guy
same type of questions
Not newbie questions, but questions that don't even help the OP learn

@SjoerdCdeVries Read a few screens back

Ok didn't do that. Brb

10:31 PM
He was a newbie, asking for code tweaking, code that even had string rep of boxed and he hadn't written

@SjoerdCdeVries from here
5 hours ago, by belisarius
Anyone around?
@Rojo Ther boxed things could come from a copy/paste

@belisarius True
In any case
Plenty of dynamics
and he couldn't know where the slider starts or to search the docs

Yes, I still smell something is wrong there

I know you don't like the island of conclusions and jumping blabla
Hehe
but those questions have backup reasons to being not nice

10:44 PM
Color it

@Rojo You are the one with colors in his name

lol
Hi guys

@jmlopez HI!!

Heya

@Rojo, for a long time I didn't realize that your name was "red"

10:46 PM
It's even more "red" when you ping me in here @Rojo

so I was pronouncing your name in English, then it hit me. I know Spanish, why am I pronouncing it all weird.

rouhouu
roujou

yeah, kinda like that

@jmlopez Well YOUR name sounds weird in English :D

lol
yeah

10:47 PM
LOUPIZ

loupei

Ah, lol I never saw it that way

low pay

great, now I'll have that pronunciation stuck in my head.

You're welcome :)

10:48 PM
yeah, be our guest!

Hey guys, I have an off topic question here. Do you know the javascript code to render the code in a website?
I recently learned of this thing called ChatJax
so that I can render the $LaTeX$ in a chat room

Can't help, sorry

No JS here

No JS in Argentina, third world
3

and of course here, we have the code enabled so when we write a = b it displays nicely.
What, JS?
as in javascript?

10:50 PM
I'm kidding

or something else?

@Rojo starred anyway
:D

;D

that looks asian

^_^

10:51 PM
winking
Anyway, too bad, I wanted to have some shortcuts in my browser so that when I click on them the code sections could be rendered the way they do in here.

Sounds nice

What about this post?

Mohr[σxx_, σyy_, τxy_] := ...

The op wasn't treated particularly friendly, was he?

No, he wasn't treated particularly friendly
nor bad either I think

I'll go with not bad
It is too much code for a first time user.

@SjoerdCdeVries Take a look at the code, and then reread the questions

10:56 PM
The first question in there is the same he had asked in another question, and I think was cross posted in SO. And they were all part of the same bunch of questions. I don't see how they are productive

Well, he got three downvotes right away and no friendly coaching towards improving the question.

those qs are not from anyone that could write the code

He got coaching
He never answered those comments

The coaching was: did you write this code?

No
It was

10:57 PM
those qs are not from anyone that could write the code

try to write minimal examples of what you want to know
reduce yoru code

The comments in those questions are not bad. I've gotten sort of... I don't know how to put it, but scolded? when I ask some questions in stackoverflow (particularly from the C++ guys)

so it's helpful to others
The thing is that he didn't write that code, and didn't seem interested in learning or understanding it
but on tweaking
and

This was rchais q not allel's

belisarius told rchais to make it minimal
"Please reduce your code sample the the minimum where your questions are meaningful and useful for others"
