9:00 PM
Hey cool might hit repcap on two sites today

user55340

user55340
No... everything is a monster... even the databases are monsters.

user41796
@MichaelT So you've worked on iSeries as well then.

user55340
@GlenH7 just giant databases. They're related to the 'storm giant' and their kin.

Only thing I know of servers is that they are loud, power hungry, uber redundant machines
had a proliant for a few months before I sold it
no way could I sleep through that haha
and it wasn't that fast

9:39 PM
@Ampt 'server' used to have a connotation closer to mainframe, but that was long back. Server generally just means these days: Some x64 machine runs windows or *nix not dissimilar from your desktop, may have non-standard-desktop components such as: multiple motherboards, or motherboard with multiple CPU slots. More ram than your system may have. Higher quality more risk-averse than consumer raid controller built into motherboard. Some form of fiber-channel or other "HBA" card
The majority of servers these days are actually just for all intents and purposes souped up desktops in a rackable case... or even consumer-grade-or-below is becoming common as people are starting to just fill their racks with cheap garbage knowing replacement of the cheap stuff is cheaper over time than acquisition of the higher end stuff

Q: Realtime visualization dashboard for questions and answers on a geographical map

Jigar JoshiIt would be cool to have a real-time visualization similar to IPViking Live1 with questions being asked and questions being answered/accepted geographically. Plus in the profile tab there could be a daily timeline tab which shows attacks (on questions, rather say help) made by you geographically...

user55340
This is interesting, but could go so wrong.

user55340

user55340
> When a user posts a question. We capture their IP, lookup their approximate location then display the attack from thier location to wherever SE's data center is.

When a user posts an answer. Again, we capture their IP, find their rough location and then show the attack from the answerer's location to the OP's location.

user55340
"look! Stanford is 'attacking' India!"

user55340
9:49 PM
@ThomasOwens btw, doing that 'reclose as a dup' has likely avoided some meta ranting. Thank you.

Good God.

Q: How to auto open pdf file in widow/mac in adobe reader using javascript?

user1620882How can be auto open a file in window's or mac's adobe reader after download using javascript or jquery

user55340
btw, welcome @Standback (as we continue to collect mods... at some point we'll be able to play poker with them... "Full house! Stack Overflow over Gamers!")

Oh, heya :)
Just peeking in :)

user55340
... @Oded would be a wild card then

user55340
@Standback btw, last year you guys (Writers.SE) had a 'tech writers' advertisement over here.. how did that go?

user55340

user55340

10:10 PM
@MichaelT nothing from india? I call bullshit

@MichaelT : Eh. We never really got off the ground with tech-writing, I'm afraid.
We have a smattering of questions, but no critical mass. Alas.

Could be an apt descriptor for all of the SE programming sites.

Some more apt than others :P

Well, except for the critical mass part. Seems we have an ample supply of that.

1 hour later…
user55340
11:20 PM
Side note: its really too hot to think about wearing excessive interview clothing. This makes choosing clothing much easier.

haha yeah, that usually helps the decision making process
although it's been generally pretty nice where I'm at

user55340
@Ampt you've got a lake of not small size.

user55340
Granted, looks like its going to cool off some... but Madison was 90F today with 62% humidity.

user55340
Weather Underground puts that at a dew point of 73F currently with a 'deals like' 95 (even though its 88F out).

@MichaelT I'm a few miles off the lake ;)
at least at home I am

user15026
11:25 PM
It was decently warm here today but I don't notice it at all in my basement

user55340
@Ampt Lake effect cooling extends for a ways.

user55340
@AshleyNunn But you're in canada... warm there is like 15 degrees.

API Design question. About: Polynomial Interpolation.
There are textbooks and chapters and Wikipedia articles on polynomial interpolations, so I'm not asking about those.

However, I need to design an API for (1) a less knowledgeable audience, as well as (2) automated systems, where there won't be a human sitting there verifying the correctness of outputs.

What concepts or options could be incorporated into the API to achieve some level of "fool-proofness" for these use cases?

@MichaelT 50 miles? I would actually be impressed

user15026
@MichaelT Hey, it's like 28C today

11:26 PM
@rwong lots and lots of very helpful errors
and a very good documentation
also, try and be as transparent as possible
(if you can that is)
I had to do much the same thing on my last big project. Had to be simple enough for non-engineers to use, but powerful enough to allow real tools to be built on it

unfortunately, "errors" in polynomial or curve interpolations are going to be very cryptic (like, R-square is ... some 16-digit number)

well, you could call them warnings and allow them to work past them by catching them
One of my biggest downfalls was making the internals too "smart" it was too hard to explain in laymens terms what happened behind the scenes

user55340
@AshleyNunn we had a 'polar vortex' a week or two ago... I blame Canada. Though it was actually Japan.

user55340
Had a 'wake up' temperature of somewhere in the mid 50s... in July.

11:34 PM
@rwong consider warning them that the R-Square is unusually large (or small, or whatever)

user15026
@MichaelT Fun :P

@AshleyNunn I enjoyed it. Made for a nice camping trip. not too hot, not too cold
@rwong either way, silently squelching errors is a recipe for disaster
that create's those odd edge cases where someone down the line is going to be using this, and banging their head for a week before someone comes along and says "Oh yeah, it does that, so you have to do this to fix it"
Theres something to be said for forcing your users to understand the system, whether they want to or not. Not suggesting that you force them to hold you hand, but if something smells odd, or you've got an error, tell them what it is so that they can either understand it, or google it and learn.
just my $.02 :)

user55340
@Ampt you need to splurge and get some Zoku products zokuhome.com and see what you can do with them.

@MichaelT If I do any more spending, my GF is going to murder me
you should have seen her face when I bought a $2300 laptop
Oops.

user55340
@Ampt But you'll be able to make booze popsicles! (well, fair bit of mixer in there)

user55340
11:39 PM
3 cups juice / 2oz alcohol... but picture a fuzzy navel popsicle.

user55340
She'll forgive you after that.

user15026
@MichaelT That would be amazing

user55340

@MichaelT you spelled disembowel wrong

user55340
> Peach White Sangria Pops: Makes 10 to 12 pops
1 1/2 pounds peaches (about 4 medium), preferably white
2 tablespoons simple syrup
3 tablespoons lime juice
3 tablespoons triple sec
1/2 cup white wine
1/4 cup ginger ale

user15026
11:41 PM
@MichaelT I want all the things.

user55340
Lime-Jalapeno Ice Pops ... o_O

user55340

user15026
OMG those put my garden variety cheapie grocery store popsicles I have to shame

user55340
@AshleyNunn My parents and brother likes 'em because you can make them just how you want with the stuff for kids in them (not pure sugar water).

user55340
That said, these are the best freezer pops I've had...

Must... resist... urge..... to buy

user55340
(@Ampt - Menards has 'em...)

user15026
@MichaelT Those ones are great.

user15026
I seriously want one of the quick pop makers, but it is out of my budget right now.

user55340
11:45 PM
I got a 1 and a 2 for my brother and my parents (and let them figure it out)... my mother took the 2... and then got a 3.

user55340
(so she can make 5x of them at a time)

user55340
She really likes a coffee one that she got a recipe to.

user55340
> 1 1/3 cups 2% milk
2 Tbs. instant espresso powder
1/4 cup sugar
1/3 cup heavy cream

user15026
that sounds super yummy :D

user55340
Those Wylers though... sent a pack to my parents... my father tried one... 2 days later, they're all gone (everyone helped). So now he gets them at about 6 boxes at a time when he goes to Menards.

user55340
11:48 PM
The key to it is the texture... its got a real slow freeze time allowing for very large ice crystals (which is the essence of Italian ice).

user15026
Now I want some.

user55340
There's a place I went to... well, twice... that has the best shaved ice...

user55340

user55340
Look at the size of that menu of flavors!

user55340
Only problem... when I said I've been there twice... its in Vernal Utah... I was there once when I was ~11, and again when I was ~35. Really wish it was closer.

user15026
@MichaelT I would have to slowly work my way through the menu

Hi programmers!

user55340
@AshleyNunn how about this one:Mint Julep popsicle

user15026
@MichaelT I do have a bunch of mint I need to use up...

Holy crap, really?

user55340
11:57 PM
@AshleyNunn non-boozy, unless you want to add it...

user15026
@MichaelT I wouldn't say no

user55340
Get a can of minute maid frozen lemon aid concentrate.

user55340

user55340
Put it in a blender. Add ice to the blender. Add the mint. Blend. Enjoy.

user55340
There's also the possibility of bicardi lemon in there too... but that's not necessary.

user55340
11:59 PM
(that said, wikipedia doesn't appear to claim that canada has that...)
