Cross posted on Programmers.SE where it's ridiculously off-topic but currently still has the code link in place. — GlenH7 50 secs ago

@GlenH7 good one, but I'm sure we can do better after I have explained my situation

user41796
So demanding.... :-)

I have a template AlreadyNamed<A,B>, which uses an internal Buffer object (I need a name for that) which in turn manages one array if A==B and two arrays if A != B. It translates between A and B only if necessary.

whoa a CV on Telastyn's question? Am I missing something, looks perfectly valid to me...
maybe just because it's asking for an explanation of something that really can't be answered by anyone but the author?

user41796
6:03 PM
@JimmyHoffa Check the chat history for a link from me to the review queue and feel free to help kick it out of the queue

user41796
@Christoph pondering

@GlenH7 meh, not interested in kicking it in or out - honestly just pondering now if I should CV it... there is some point to the idea that it's overly subjective...

user41796
@JimmyHoffa Good questions require a measure of subjectivity

user41796
And his question is "Industry experience says X but academic instruction says Y. Help me sort that out."

@GlenH7 that's all well and good, I'm just wondering if I was impartial in not thinking about that ahead of time due to who asked it....on the other hand, I didn't notice who asked it at first (was a little surprised when I was halfway through my answer to realize who it was talking about going to college)

user41796
6:07 PM
I thought it was worth expending a close review vote with "leave open" just to kick it out of the queue. On marginal questions, I'll just skip them in order to preserve the review vote.

because that is a particular type of question that irritates me: Questions that can only be answered by some specific person who made decisions in their language or tool or whatever, but are asked of a broad community instead of the person who decided

user41796
Kevin Cline's answer is pretty good in that regards. It's a very pragmatic "do it this way because of ..."

The buffer always buffers. So the name might include the word "buffer". It translates between A and B only optionally, so "translator" should not be part of it

user41796
@Christoph And given that A & B are intended to be generic types, you may have to go with a generic name like TypeBuffer

@GlenH7 I agree. Yeah I won't CV, but I'm going to think on editting it to remove a touch of the "only the author can answer this"

user41796
6:08 PM
@JimmyHoffa wouldn't hurt

@Christoph NormalizingBuffer

user41796
@Christoph And since the translation aspect is optional depending upon state, I don't think I'd capture that within the name

user41796
or TypeNormalizingBuffer

wait wait wait
@Christoph I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT THAT IS CALLED!!!

user41796
@JimmyHoffa isn't it a monad?

6:10 PM
It's a well known, standard thing

@GlenH7 A and B are always two Color classes - would "normalize" still fit? I can also paste the class code, it's not that much

@GlenH7 nope, it's a functor :)
@Christoph does the buffer take a variant input and create a uniform output? That's the definition of "to normalize"

user55340
fun ctors are more fun than moaning ads.

user41796
@Christoph remember that all SE posts become available under CC license, so you may not want to do that

user41796
ColorBuffer could work too. I still agree with avoiding mentioning the optional translation aspect

6:12 PM
@GlenH7 Really? All these licenses

user41796
AlreadyNamed.ColorBuffer kind of makes sense

@GlenH7 the final result will be open source anyway

user41796
@Ampt Per the Ts&Cs, anything posted is licensed under a CC license.

@GlenH7 I think that's hiding relavent details - an interface doesn't need implementation specifics in the name, but implementations should definitely detail their implementation in the name

user41796
@Christoph that presumes the CC license is compatible....

6:13 PM
It's the difference between a Stream and a NetworkStream vs. FileStream -> the name alone gives you implementation details to know ahead of time that NetworkStream won't support the Seek() function

user41796
Okay, that's out of me. And it wasn't that funny. <sighs>

user41796
In mathematics, a functor is a type of mapping between categories, which is applied in category theory. Functors can be thought of as homomorphisms between categories. In the category of small categories, functors can be thought of more generally as morphisms. Functors were first considered in algebraic topology, where algebraic objects (like the fundamental group) are associated to topological spaces, and algebraic homomorphisms are associated to continuous maps. Nowadays, functors are used throughout modern mathematics to relate various categories. Thus, functors are generally applicable in areas...

user41796
I'd still call it a buffer. No one knows what the heck a functor is.

@GlenH7 the mapping can be an identity mapping which is to say - does not translate
@GlenH7 it was a joke. Of course no one knows what a functor is

user41796
@JimmyHoffa you did. Just saying.

6:16 PM
@GlenH7 I'm reading up on that right now. New staff on the project, and many broken dreams, so we'll see where they go.

user41796
@Ampt Collect the tears and convert to biodiesel?

(great movie for anyone who ever has a chance to see it)

hi

@Aditya hello!

6:17 PM
@WorldEngineer you should actually get your hands on that movie for your own edification sometime if you never seen it - for the William Blake references

are you all pro-programmers?

user41796
@Aditya professional?

would you suggest me and give me some advice?

@Ampt have you had any time off-bench yet? Are you off-bench now?
@Aditya that depends, are you going to ask us how to burn down buildings? I have moral objections to advice on that topic.

I tried to learnt programming 1-2 years ago and now I'm in highschool.

Q: HOW TO CREATE A NETWORK PACKET CAPTURING ENGINE WITHOUT USING WINPCAP OR ANY THIRD PARTY LIBRARY USING C++ OR PYTHON

user3870169I WANT TO CREATE A NETWORK PACKET CAPTURING ENGINE LIKE WIRESHARK , BUT WITHOUT USING ANY THIRD PARTY LIBRARY LIKE WIN PCAP I WANT TO CREATE THIS ENGINE USING C++ OR PYTHON.IT CAN ALSO BE DONE USING C# BUT NOT JAVA. CAN I GET ANY SUGGESTION ON HOW CAN I DO IT. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE

Made some applications for android.

@Aditya @JimmyHoffa was nomitated for the All-Pro team, but then he pulled his haskell and they had to bench him.

Holy crap. Someone is accusing us of being professionals.
3

didn't knew proper way to debug
spent hours debuggin
made a simple tower defense game in 1+1/2-2 months

@Aditya You sound like a redneck.

6:22 PM
@RobertHarvey don't be rude, he sounds like english is his second language
granted he probably doesn't get the reference then

I'm being lazy

Bingo.

oh
well there's no excuse for that

Yeah, we're professionals. Remember?

yes english is my second language

6:23 PM
You speak mighty good English [sic].

do you suggest anything I should do after high school, which college, etc.?

Write programs.

user41796
Write lots of programs

@GlenH7 Point in case.

6:24 PM
Write more programs than you feel is a healthy amount. Then write more.

^--- one of the most important professional skills
and that's a well written bunch of content on how to debug
Not common outside of industry, master that and college courses in coding will be far easier for you than others as most people don't know how to do it before they start their career

no I made stupid mistakes and did add everywhere "system.print("variable"=variablevalue)"

25 downvotes in 7 minutes. That's quite an accomplishment.

so that it would be easier

@RobertHarvey what? where?

6:26 PM
@jimmy just bookmarked that link

user41796
@Aditya Good; you learned. Now write more programs and don't repeat that mistake. Find the next mistake to make. And fix.

you can see my question some years earlier and you would recognize something of my character?
on SO
maybe that'll be waste of your time? you're busy?

^-- read this too
it's a single article won't take long unlike that debugging thing

user41796

no I made stupid mistakes and did add everywhere "system.print("variable"=variablevalue)"

worth keeping in mind

user41796
6:28 PM
That's what told me you learned.

user41796
If you hadn't learned, you wouldn't have called it a stupid mistake.

user41796
Try an approach, see if it works. Find why it doesn't work. Try again. Don't be dogmatic about anything you haven't proven yourself. For that matter, don't be dogmatic. Things change too fast for dogmatism.

at the moment I am focusing on preparing to get a good college will be out of highschool in probably 6 months and would spent my part time programming

The best advice you can get right now is: Code. Code more. Then keep coding. Truly learning a skill like this takes years of repetition.

user41796
And then some...

6:31 PM
that said, you're still young, don't do something over and over until you hate it, when it stops being fun take a break. Otherwise you'll ruin it altogether and not want to do it at all.

user41796
@Aditya For a point of reference, several of us in this chat room have been coding on a professional level for more years than you've been alive. And most of us have been coding as a hobby well before we became professionals.

Q: Comparing doubles

user3347937I need to compare to double variables like this if (distance <= radius) both distance and radius are doubles and I remember in class how to use epsilon comparisons for checking equality but how would I do it for <= or >?

@Ampt haha you write lots of bugs

user55340

Q: Is this a good way to compare two numbers?

BDotAIf we have double numbers, let's say I want to see if some double parameter is equal to zero that is passed as double: public bool AlmostEqual(double x, double y) { double epsilon = Math.Max(Math.Abs(x), Math.Abs(y)) * 1E-15; return Math.Abs(x - y) <= epsilon; } considering double show...

user41796
@Ampt shaddup you pup

@Aditya I learn a ton just by being in here - I'm fairly novice compared to most of these people too

user41796
@JimmyHoffa So have we; we've just fixed more of them.

@JimmyHoffa If you think you don't write any bugs, you may also be senile ;)

Experience matters and I'll take on your advice.

user41796
6:32 PM
@Ampt He has been at it a while...

@Ampt I hope I write less than I used to, alternatively maybe I've just gotten worse at finding them O_O

user41796
@Aditya So just go write some more code. Make sure it stays fun and that you enjoy it.

@GlenH7 It's that functional programming that did him in, I tell ya.

user41796
@Ampt I think you have to be senile to be able to understand it to begin with.

I just started this because I was interested in making a live wallpaper for my phone because my friend was not giving me one via bluetooth

user41796
6:33 PM
@Aditya and don't forget to enjoy Life while you're at it. There needs to be balance in everything

@Aditya If you get tired of desktop apps, make something on the web. If you get tired of stuff on the web, get an arduino and start writing embedded code. There is as much variety in programming as life, and getting tired or bored or angry at one kind will lead to you hating the whole of it.

psr
@Ampt He still writes bugs, but they're in Haskell, so no one ever finds them.
2

@GlenH7 do you know the license that applies when using pastebin? I couldn't find that in their faq

@psr Well, yea, that would require someone to run the program

user41796
@Christoph Might be public domain, afaik

user41796
6:34 PM
pastebin doesn't try to provide anything more than a dumping ground of information. It's the "information needs to be free" mantra epitomized.

and I learnt using these youtube videos of java(by the newboston channel) some 100-200 and then some android videos same count not bragging, just giivng my introduction

@Aditya so you're like 99.8% of countries then?

haha

@GlenH7 it was a quote from Programming Sucks suggesting some work life balance.

> Every programmer occasionally, when nobody's home, turns off the lights, pours a glass of scotch, puts on some light German electronica, and opens up a file on their computer. It's a different file for every programmer. Sometimes they wrote it, sometimes they found it and knew they had to save it. They read over the lines, and weep at their beauty, then the tears turn bitter as they remember the rest of the files and the inevitable collapse of all that is good and true in the world.

@enderland TL;DR drink more booze.

6:39 PM
@GlenH7 Its cool enough out that I might have to crack open one of my wine bottles... don't expect to go anywhere tomorrow either (more rain).

@enderland Have you tried working less? :)

@Christoph So you need something more descriptive than ColorBufferT?

user55340
> Apple—Limited / Seasonal availability. This beautiful, sweet apple wine is fashioned from our own apple cider produced here at Arbor Day Farm. The special blend of apples used to produce the cider resulted in a wine that allows the apple characteristics to shine through.

Cherry—Limited / Seasonal availability. This unique wine is made from Montmorency tart cherries that are grown here on Arbor Day Farm. The wine is sweet yet tart with hints of cinnamon. Best served chilled.

Peach—Limited / Seasonal availability. This dessert wine is made from tree-ripened peaches grown on Arbor Day Farm

@MichaelT It is / they are.

user41796
6:44 PM
And they have a slightly later fall season than you do, so you could find justification for a photography trip.

user41796
Omaha Zoo is supposed to be amazing as well.

user55340
Note that a short drive away from me is a all fruit wine winery: autumnharvestwinery.com/our-wines/purchase

@Ampt good idea! hahaha

user41796
@Christoph - perhaps "mapping" for a different name?

user55340
The area I went yesterday turned out to be past peak... and the rain and cold will not help things...

Saturday might be nice again... though wondering where the frost is going to be... frost turns fall color leaves black.

I should get a nice camera, I'm going to make some wall art for Christmas for my parents

user55340
@enderland what is your budge and desire to photograph?

low :P

@GlenH7 well I think "ColorBuffer" is quite good already (I pasted it into the code at pastebin after it was suggested here)

user55340
6:51 PM
@enderland best cheap camera that has expansion abilities: bhphotovideo.com/c/product/910126-REG/…

I want ot make something like that

user55340
That $150 off on a $350 body is quite nice.

user41796
@Christoph It made sense to me when I was reading it, FWIW. I was kind of wondering "and the problem with this is what exactly?"

user41796
Templates by their nature end up with generic names

@MichaelT I have an ok digital camera, I have no idea what one I have though
it was $200 a few years ago?

user55340

Adjective: tryptic (comparative more tryptic, superlative most tryptic)
  1. Of, pertaining to or produced by trypsin...

user41796
@MichaelT What's the advantage of the "mirrorless"?

user55340
That's not the tryptic I was after.

user55340
@GlenH7 Shorter film to flange distance, makes it easier to design simpler short lenses.

user41796
ok, makes sense

user55340
I touch on it here:

user55340
6:54 PM

A: What is the difference between a telephoto lens and a zoom lens?

MichaelTOn telephoto (and retrofocus, and zoom) lens design: The simple definition of a telephoto lens is a lens that has a focal length longer than the physical lens. Many lenses that are 'long' (as opposed to 'normal' or 'wide') are telephoto in design. This is because it sometimes is impractical to...

user41796
so less likely to have to mount the lens to the tripod and then hang the back off of the lens

user55340
>
There's another flip to that which is what you see in SLR photography a lot - the retrofocus design. With a Nikon F mount, the flange distance is 46.5mm. This allows the mirror to clear the back of the lens when it flips up (this is a major issue in SLR design). So the closest you can put a lens would be about 47mm away from the focal plane. But yet, there are lenses such as a 24mm lens which have a focal length that is shorter than this distance. (Note: this is part of why interchangeable lenses on rangefinders and mirrorless systems can made more cheaply - they can use simpler designs f

user55340
The Nikon 1 mount has flange distance of 17mm.

user55340
Its also something you find in rangefinders (mirroless film cameras).

user41796
@MichaelT OK, so that makes it very versatile from a lens perspective

6:57 PM
@MichaelT I would love to be ok at taking pictures, maybe I should do that as a fun hobby

user55340
@enderland there are a couple things there. First, its a 1:1 x 3 panoramic. This can either be done with a panoramic camera, or 3 shots and then cropped.

user41796
alright, let's get me a reversal badge before the question is deleted:

user41796

A: How to test that the output of stdout is correct?

GlenH7This ought to achieve what you're looking for. (ie. how to tell that something was written to stdout) #include <sys/stat.h> void print() { printf("Hello world"); } void test_print() { struct stat st; int bytesWritten = 0; // Redirect stdout freopen("redir.txt", "w", stdout...

user55340
I'm not sure the actual dimensions of those prints... but panoramic cameras aren't cheap.

user41796
@MichaelT tripod + iphone pano mode?

user55340
6:58 PM

A: Approximating a wide XPan shot

MichaelTThere are several ways to approach this, and there are two 'problems' that you are looking at. The first is the panoramic format... One could use the approach done by photographers who shot APS-P images (or put a mask over a 5x7" (127mm x 177mm) slide or negative to get a a 60mm x 170mm frame (...

user55340

user55340
(one of my photos)

Nothing like getting an email containing: "I am getting an error. Can you please try to help me"

@MichaelT I was thinking one and cropped, but I don't have a high res image that I want to use (my parents have a lake place I want to use)

user55340
@GlenH7 3 shot would be better.

user41796
6:59 PM
@MichaelT good point

user55340
Though I'm going to guess that print was done with a panoramic camera given the light beam being split on the left and center images.

user55340

user41796
@MichaelT Or one hella lucky shot?

user55340

I've got a 1920x1080 photo but I don't think I can blow that up to be 2x4 feet very well

user55340
7:00 PM
Or really luck... if there's a lens flare component to that moving the lens would change the beam.

I was thinking of doing 1x2 2x2 and 1x2 feet sections

user55340
@enderland a 2'x6' print (24x36) really leans to a 6x17 camera.

user55340
I can only get up to 8x24" with my xpan before I become disappointed with quality (its 35mm)

yeah. I'm going to experiment some
I'm going to print on fabric then make a wooden frame
and see how that works

user55340
7:01 PM
Photographer I know who shoots a Linhoff 6x17: panoscapes.com

that is the general plan I have, different applicatino thoguh

user55340
(the 6x17 is referring to the film is 6cm x 17cm for each frame... bit bigger than the 35mm format)

user55340
But... going back to the camera... The nikon 1 S1 is a 10mp image at 3872 x 2592. That should be sufficient to make 1'x1' prints.

@enderland depends on how many DPI your want your final print to be. a DPI of 200-300 is usually considered photo quality. scale that out to your size and you have a rough estimate of your resolution needs

user55340
It would be giving you a 200 dpi print on the short edge at 1'. If you have a proper photographic printer it will help with the blurring of the pixels.

user55340
7:05 PM
(I used to have an olympus dye sub printer... neat, costly, and very priproity - can't get dye or paper for it anymore)

user55340
Hmm... maybe I can.

user55340
Thought it was so old...

@Ampt it'll be printed on cloth, I think they recommend 150dpi

user55340
The ink dye for the dye sub printer comes on rolls:

user55340

user55340
Problem is thats $40, and does 50 prints.... and then there's the paper too. 25 sheets for $25.

user55340
@enderland On cloth you'd do ok.

@enderland you can definitely get away with lower DPI on a medium like cloth or canvas

@MichaelT yeah, probably is 1900x1080ish at default resolution is only.... not 48 inches wide :P
so I'll have to blow the image up and have it lose resolution quality

7:09 PM
@enderland yeah 1920x1080 is pretty terrible for photo size

I think it was from my dad's cell phone (the picture I want to use)

user55340
Its an old 2mp digital... it was ok back in the day, and still ok for web.

you're looking at 90 DPI if you blow that to a 12x12 (cropping to the short side)

user55340
Btw, I'd like to point out that you don't need perfection to get a good wall art photo - tedorland.com/panoramas/panorama.html

yeah it gets terrible if you blow it up to 4'x4'

user55340
7:10 PM

user55340
That was shot with a holga.

I love the editing on that

user55340

user55340
The 'lens' has the optical quality of a hot wheels windshield.

oooh those are neat

user55340
7:13 PM
Yep.

user55340
He's a reasonably well known california photographer... has a gallery in Santa Cruz IIRC.

user55340
He was also a student of Ansel Adams... and had quite a sense of humor.

user55340

user55340

user55340
@enderland Thing is, you can do quite a bit if you are going to accept the limitations of the media and work with them.

user55340
7:17 PM
The thing is, an ok camera (I wouldn't claim the Nikon 1 S1 is a great camera) with a good tripod (the good tripod will cost more than the camera) - you could certainly capture photographs akin to those.

I don't have a tripod, maybe I should find one
I think my camera is ok
I forget what type it is
I basically went to Sam's Club, found one I liked the asthetics of, and then checked how well it took "moving pictures" and "dark pictures"

user41796
@enderland highly recommended to help get rid of any jitter

ie moved the camera while taking a picture to check for blur and then with bad lighting
@GlenH7 yeah... toys...
though I'd guess I could find one on craigslist cheap

user55340
You will want a tripod that stands about 5' tall without raising the center shaft.

user55340

7:22 PM
I have too much stuff already. but you are making me want a tripod

especially since it's fall now

user55340
Note: Maximum Height w/o Column Extended: 55"

user55340
Thats the number you're looking for... and I'm suggesting aluminum ones... unless you want to go crazy.

you're welcome

user55340
7:24 PM
(I've got a tripod is similar to bhphotovideo.com/c/product/568862-REG/… )

wowza

user55340
@enderland I've got 4 tripods. 3 aluminum (one has an off center shaft), and one carbon fiber leveling...

ok so you are not just a casual photographer ;)

user55340
See, the leveling one is 3.7 lbs... while that first one I linked is 5.5 lbs. That makes a difference when you go on a 4 mile hike there.

Yeah I bet
Sometimes I wonder if I'm too frugal, since I never really buy nice stuff

user55340
7:27 PM
I started out with plastic tripods. I spent $200 over the course of 2 years on 4x tripods at $50 each. I've had the $200 tripod leg for about 10 years now. Which is cheaper?

option c - not buying a tripod :)

user55340
@enderland then you don't take the photos at all.

Nah, this is a classic dilemma in my life, spending money takes energy for me to do (I like saving, perhaps too much)

@enderland Come to the dark side

user55340
Now, on that 5.5lb tripod... (those are the legs), I've got a 229 head. bhphotovideo.com/c/product/553888-REG/… - that head weighs another 4 lbs.

@enderland Money is just a tool. Use it to do the things you enjoy.

I do enjoy life immensely though, that's the problem blessing not sure what to call it

user41796
The balancing act is using the money to purchase into the level you know you're able to appreciate.

@enderland option 2: rent the camera equipment

user41796
Being a rank amateur and buying the most expensive pro gear is foolish - you don't have the skills to use it. But having a modicum of skill can make it worth getting the next grade of equipment up so you can experience the benefits of better tooling.

rates are pretty damn competitive if you look at the cost of ownership/number of day's you'll actually use the stuff

7:30 PM
I'll just have my fiance rent one from teh university for free!

user55340
... do they make hex plate ball heads anymore? Hmm.

maybe I"ll have her do that for this weekend, it'll be great outside and beautiful I think

the glass is the most important part

user55340
See... I don't have a GF... I don't need to rent, I can afford to buy.

good glass + budget camera can make some really great pictures
terrible glass + worlds best camera = crap

7:31 PM
life is crazy awesome, there are SO MANY COOL THINGS in the world

@MichaelT you use your equipment enough to justify it :P
granted that camera gear (especially glass) holds it's value exceptionally well, you still have to take in to account how often you're gonna use the stuff
if it's like 5 days a year, paying a hundred bucks to get a decent quality kit for a long weekend is probably cheaper than owning a budget camera
but if you're talking 5 days a month, that changes drastically

user55340
... hm... I guess I'm sticking with that slightly wobbly ball head then for some time or biting the bullet and going with a heavy head.

user55340
(all my tripod heads use the bogen hex plate... which I really like... the heads don't budge at all when tightened down)

I'm somewhat experiencing that with my road bike, I spent about $1k on everything and have only really used it for a few hundred miles so far - I keep telling myself I want the cost/mile to be <$1

@enderland More than you could ever enjoy. Kinda depressing isn't it

user41796
7:35 PM
@enderland Why? What does cost / mile mean to you?

@enderland I like cost/hr as a better measure

I guess cost/hr is better, now that I think about it

a movie is roughly 4 dollars an hour for entertainment. A good game can be a dollar an hour if it's got 60 hours of content

@GlenH7 I want it to be cheaper than driving

user41796
@enderland But why? I think you're not valuing the intangible aspects enough

7:36 PM
mileage on your car has a cost though
oil changes, regular maintenance, tires, etc, all add up quickly

user41796
any acquisition has tangible and intangible factors. Placing a value on the intangibles is notoriously tricky, but they can be the most important factors for you.

I conservatively guesstimate the cost for my car as 30 cents a mile - though it's probably a bit higher
@GlenH7 yeah absolutely, especially when exercise is concerned

@enderland that's for just gas or just maintenance?

@Ampt everything

user41796
@enderland so if spending a bit more money meant that you got to enjoy an activity you love all that much more, then why not do so?

7:37 PM
gas, maintenance, insurance/registration, depreciation

That seems... low, but it sounds like you've done your research

user41796
Mind you, it took me years to really wrap my head around this and I still struggle with it

it is a bit low but I don't expect to drive nice cars and also drive almost all highway

user41796
But money is just a tool to help you do the things you want to do.

I have a solution guys: you send me your money, and I'll spend it and tell you how happy it makes me
I have no problem spending money

7:38 PM
I don't really feel deprived, much, at all, since I'm purchasing really expensive things instead

user41796
My primary point is to not ignore the intangible benefits a purchase provides.

Yeah
I guess that's true

user41796
And I will certainly agree that the principle can be abused.

user55340
@amon check that meta question of that user you brought up earlier... the comments certainly echo the warning you gave in chat.

@GlenH7 Yeah it's all about what you value, figuring out what it is, and then spending on that -- and not really worrying
the trick is figuring out what you value...

user41796
7:45 PM
@enderland It may be worth pointing out that his article doesn't really address tools - things you use over and over again to do the things you enjoy

user41796
And it's a different conversation than the bud light vs. scotch example he proposed

@GlenH7 yeah, this is true. I generally am willing to purchase quality stuff for things I will use forever or get lots of use out of, when I feel there is value add

user41796
Many years back, I upgraded to a worm drive circular saw. In part because I had beaten the crap out of the old craftsman I had been given. Every time I use that worm drive saw, I'm amazed and impressed at it. And I wonder why I waited so long to get one.

I'm pondering getting a miter saw since I would use it a ton, too, but living in an apartment I already have way too much stuff :\

user41796
@enderland The sliding ones are awesome, BTW

7:52 PM
@GlenH7 wouldn't it just be a chop saw if it didn't slide?

user55340
Anyways... photo... longish exposure, possibly ND filter (note the ripples in the water are smoothed out a bit). 1:3 aspect ratio - use a tripod, take 3 shots (manual mode so the metering doesn't change), stitch together into one photo, and then cut apart at desired spots.

user41796
@Ampt Depends on if it handles angled cuts or not

ah true

@MichaelT oh wait I see totally how a tripod would be great for what I want to do - that would be super legit

but yeah, a good miter is pretty much the staple of a workship. that and a table saw. not much else you need

user41796
7:53 PM
Chop - up | down motion
Mitre - angled cut
Sliding - slides out

user41796
@Ampt I have done pretty well with those staples. I'm toying with getting a bandsaw, but may just build one instead for grins.

@Ampt you never need tools - but man they are useful :)

user55340
If you shoot portrait rather than landscape, you will take 4-5 photos, but have more pixels to work with allowing a higher quality dpi final product.

user41796
@enderland Wait. You're an engineer and you said WHAT?

@GlenH7 need is such a strong, definitive word

psr
7:56 PM
@enderland For C#, for example, having a computer saves a ton of time versus compiling and executing manually.
