11:07 AM
hello everyone.. I'm trying to create a local virtual host.. can anyone please assist me in case i'm missing something obvious?

11:21 AM
@AnPel Probably, but your question is rather vague. You mean virtual machine? Host OS? Virtualisation you're using? etc. 99% chance it's already covered by a Q on this site though.

this describes the task i want to accomplish

@AnPel That's web hosting using Apache it seems.
You're lucky. I can do that too. what's your issue exactly?

I've followed the exact steps described in this tutorial (this is the 5th or 6th tutorial I've followed since last night) and still same issue

@AnPel I'm not familiar with the history here. Again: what is your issue exactly?

when I ping the virtual machine i get 127.0.0.1 as expected, when I try to go to the site with firefox it just googles it
yes yes, i was still typing!

11:29 AM
ah sorry

have i left something unclear?

So, you're attempting to connect to your web server using your web browser using the localhost address (127.0.0.1), but it 'redirects' you to Google?

yes, exaclty

and you've set up Apache on the same machine as you're now running the browser on?

but when I use w3m from terminal I get the content like expected. yes, same machine

11:32 AM
ah got it. let me type the answer.
some browsers are not too keen on connecting to localhost/127.0.0.1 as it could be security issue. malware can easily run a simple fake site there and if users aren't really noticing that... you get the point. For Chrome, try putting http:// in front of 127.0.0.1 explicitly.
well I'm not sure about the exact reason, but I guess it's security thingy.

this is a fresh install of ubuntu,on my previous install (12,10 as well) everything worked normally.
Same version of firefox too

Proxy setting?
However usually localhost is excluded in there

Also, in the process of testing why it doesn't work, I added '0.0.0.0 google.com' to my hosts file, and the pointed firefox to google.com, and got the page normally, which got me to think that for some reason firefox ignores hosts file

I have another clue

tried in chrome too and got the same thing

11:38 AM
`127.0.0.1 mylocalsite1.com`
`127.0.0.1 othersite.tld` is just wrong afaik. localhost is 127.0.0.0/8 so you should count up. e.g. 127.0.0.2, 127.0.0.3, etc.
OR
127.0.0.1 mylocalsite1.com othersite.tld
in one line
either way, this tutorial is wrong at this. quite sure.

i did not get your first two lines im afraid, can you please clarify a bit?
you mean increment ips for every virtual host, like 127.0.0.2 mylocalsite1, 127.0.0.3 mylocalsite2 etc?
because i tried that with no success as well

no don't increment. easier is to read below the OR

jrg
@gertvdijk that's the way.

the reason is clear. your tutorial is wrong

Q: How can /etc/hosts be used to associate multiple domains with a single IP?

Luca RomagnoliI have a single IP (81.174.66.48) and I would like to use /etc/hosts to associate multiple domains with that IP. Currently my hosts file looks like this: 81.174.66.48 nerto.it nerto I would like eventlog.it and eventlog.in to also be resolved to 81.174.66.48. I tried making my hosts file lo...

@gertvdijk got it, I have to leave in 5 so I cant really test right now, any other clues i should check?

@AnPel I'm quite sure this is the reason. one other thought: if DNS via proxy is enabled for your browser, this will still not work. but don't bother if you're not running a proxy, just try this first.

no its a fresh install, all i have installed is updates and lamp, I want to get it working before i configure everything else in my system
sorry, I have to go. Thank you so much for your time, I hope I can pay you back sometime.

@AnPel ok. good luck. Leave a comment about the wrong syntax on the tutorial page if it worked for you.
@AnPel and refer to the ServerFault Q I just posted. It's a pretty obvious mistake.
I'm new to userscripts (browser). Using Chrome. Installed the StackApp AutoReview thingy for pro-forma comments. Chrome asked me to confrim installation, clicked OK. It's not listed as browser extension. Where to go from here?

jrg
11:58 AM
@gertvdijk uh, chrome doesn't let you install it.
they blocked userscripts that don't come from the chrome store.

@jrg Yes, appears I have totally misread the message. stackapps.com/tags/script/info

jrg
when they did that, that was just the final straw for me. i moved to firefox. :P

@jrg I've switched away from Firefox I think 2 years ago after using both browsers from Chromium 2-5 or something.
Really can't stand Firefox nowadays, sorry. Browsers should be simple. Firefox isn't. imo.
oh and I like the 300% speed improvement too.

jrg
BS on the 300% speed improvement. on my machine, firefox with my customary 10 tabs open runs circles around any of the three builds of chrom(ium)e.
ah yes, now we are unwittingly getting into the "my favourite piece of software to do X is better than yours"

@jrg yeah, well, for me Firefox was utterly painfully slow compared to what I'm used too using a new user profile last week. It's not a slow machine. Quad-core, 24GB RAM. Friend told me it must be the 'smooth scroll' feature I should disable.

jrg
12:08 PM
@gertvdijk weird, centrino, 2GB ram runs fine. :P
i am really skeptical of any machine that isn't a server with more than 8GB of ram. i don't think normal desktop software is designed to run off that type of resources right now...

@jrg I've been running 5x 4GB virtual machines on it for testing MySQL performance thingies. You know. KVM, Puppet, large data sets, etc. SSD with 24GB is a major YEY there.

jrg
so you're doing server type things on a non-server. I will never understand people. ;)

You'd have made the same decision. Pay €5000 for a server to test it on, or spend €80 on 16GB extra mem in my new mobile workstation.
oh because of the discussion we ran into... forgot to mention the userscript is working and forgot to continue reviewing.

12:30 PM
What's the deal with unregistered users btw? How can they come back and reuse their identity to edit their question?

@gertvdijk If they use the same browser on the same machine, then they have cookies that save their identity. Or they can register after posting but before editing. Or they can submit an edit anonymously and reviewers can try to figure out if it's really from the same person. Or they can have multiple identities that get merged by moderators.

jrg
the possibilities are (almost) endless.

imo, this is too confusing and a big invitation to just bail out on your Q. Moreover, on Ubuntu people are using Live CDs and such, so cookies aren't of any help. It's not SO/SF in that sense.

jrg
why do you think we have such a large problem with abandoned questions?
they half-ask the question, when they don't get an answer within 10 minutes they leave.

email address seems to be required when posting a Q unregistered. Are they being notified about updates?
This unregistered thingy should change on AU. Really.

Q: How do I install BCM43142 wireless drivers for Dell Vostro 3460/3560?

rodrigoI have a Dell Vostro 3460 with one of the new Broadcom 43142 hybrid Wireless/Bluetooth chips. Neither the proprietary driver (wl) nor the b43 driver supports this. lspci -nn gives me 01:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation Device [14e4:4365] (rev 01) 02:00.0 Ethernet controller ...

the answer there doesn't work?

12:51 PM
I don't have a dell vostro

jrg
ah, but broadcoms are broadcoms (from what i've seen)

@FarhanKarim that's of no interest to wireless drivers.
@jrg 4312 is not the same as 43142

jrg
@gertvdijk i'm looking at the answers in the broadcom tag, and they all seem to point to the same basic set of instructions.
but ok, if that's the wrong one then that's the wrong one.

@jrg I believe that's a specific hybrid chip. it has a confusing similar name. Anyway, not sure, and there are tons of Qs about the same device.
@jrg see the "not a dupe" comment in the Q askubuntu.com/questions/175104/…

jrg
ah, ok
sorry, i don't own a broadcom. been lucky, only ever had to deal with intel and realtek.
@FarhanKarim so try the question i linked to above - i think that has the answer for you, and good luck!

@jrg where's meta chat?

jrg
@gertvdijk for the full SE network? or just ask ubuntu?

@jrg just AU

jrg
we don't have one.
we normally either create a topic-specific chatroom, or we just hash it out here.
room topic changed to Ask Ubuntu General Room: General discussion around Ask Ubuntu, Ubuntu & official Ubuntu derivatives. (no tags)
chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/201?m=3429433#3429433 ah yes, that brings back memories. :P
and the pokemod. jsfiddle.net/rlemon/JHxdE/embedded/result oh man, this stuff is great.
@gertvdijk so feel free to start the discussion here if you want.

@jrg ah okay. well. I tried. then you yelled metttttttttttaaaaaaaaaaaaaa[...]

jrg
oh, i was more saying that if you had something long winded to say, meta might be a good place to start. :P

okay. I'm surprised to see only a few 'merge requests' when searching for unregistered on meta.

Speaking of... @jrg I recommend merging Arun and arunan if possible. They're pretty clearly the same user and I doubt s/he prefers to use more than one account to work on the same question.

@htorque yes that is normal in windows

Ah, I need to install windows xp tommorrow

also when the compter starts up (after updating) it says "don't turn it off" like Why would I?! I just started it wtf...

even better: it configures updates during shutdown.

@gertvdijk no, the syntax 127.0.0.1 localhost,localsite1 etc did not do the trick, will probably have to ask on serverfault

@AnPel If you have indications it's something Ubuntu related just make it a Q here.

4:48 PM
@htorque that's really stupid..

@gertvdijk I have posted a question on serverfault, feels like it belongs there, please, if anyone can help, see here serverfault.com/questions/463282/…

hi ... sorry to bump into the chat... just wanted to know, where are those hats which i earned ???? can't see any of them on my profile ???

@AnPel "append 127.0.0.1 test to hosts file" - what about the 127.0.0.1 entry already there?

@Z9iT go to your profile and click on your avatar, I think you can find them there
@gertvdijk you suggest I should go for 127.0.0.2 test ?

@AnPel No. I suggest to append test to the very same line as the existing system default 127.0.0.1 line. each IP should be unique

@AnPel nothing hapens.. the moment i click my avatar, i am returned back to my profile... and earlier it was shoen on my profile.. 10 hats... now nothing is there ! :-\

5:15 PM
@Z9iT hats are gone.

oh.. so does that mean that all those which i've earned earlier... they are also gone ???

@Z9iT they were probably a seasonal thing
@gertvdijk oh yes this is what I did, sorry for that, the line is 127.0.0.1 localhost, test

oh... but i strongly believe that all those hats earned by everyone should remain in the profile... they are pritty good to show off to friends... hehe !

@Z9iT you should post this suggestion on meta!

@AnPel A ',' I believe is not valid syntax in the hosts file
@AnPel and update your Q.

5:19 PM
@gertvdijk sorry, I tried to reply quickly and did not check the hosts file. the line is correct, with a space, not a coma

thanks for you'r suggestion... one question... how can i put the extract of this chat aswell in my question ?? m kinda new to the community so don't know much bout it.. but still learning !

@Z9iT sorry, kind of new too, I can't help you with that!

oh... in that case.. WELCOME to the community ! hehe
but befor i post the question.. have a look at this post in meta
http://meta.askubuntu.com/questions/5633/will-winter-hats-disappear-after-december

@Z9iT looks like there will be no more hats for a while!

@Z9iT I suggest to just the regular Blockquote markdown syntax and link to the first transcript line. Click on the triangle before the message and use the 'permalink' for this.

Z9iTI believe that the hats are gone ?? Today I opened my profile and noticed that the line declaring how many hats I've earned has disappeared.. Hello, I did just buy a new domain for my web project, and now I want to add it to my server computer (running ubuntu server). But now when I started to read some help pages and such, I still have no clue how to set it up. Now I did change my primary network interface to use static ip, but I am not sure did I do it correctly.
and what is network ip? Its under netmask.

@Arto Hi there! I believe you're interested in a (basic) IPv4/DNS q&a first. A lot of this is not Ubuntu-specific. I suggest to ask this on Superuser.com
2

@gertvdijk Okkay, thanks for the information, but isn't that static ip mode ubuntu-specific question still?

@Arto True! Yet, how to configure a static IP is not off-topic there either. My opinion on this is that you're having a broader networking question.
DNS, virtual hosting, IP configuration, etc. in a home setting really should belong there. If you're having a Ubuntu related question to setting up static IP configuration, then come back here.

6:04 PM
Yeh, I am asking is my ip now static when I did change the lines below, iface eth0 inet static
        address 192.168.1.100
        netmask 255.255.255.0
        network 192.168.1.0
        broadcast 192.168.1.255
        gateway 192.168.1.1

@Arto There we go. A basic non-Ubuntu related IP/DNS question.
These are local IPs (RFC1918), which are useless for 'real domains' you can 'buy'. You need to set up port forwarding on your router where the NAT takes place.

@AbrahamVanHelpsing - Yeah buddy am here

@LuisAlvarado heh. i was just going to point you towards the fact that it was already a comment and eliah thought i should move it to answer. originally...it was a comment

@Arto yeah, your IP is static if you made those chanced and the inet is static
@AbrahamVanHelpsing yeah buddy don't worry just so it.

@LuisAlvarado Where I can see my inet status?

6:10 PM
Didn't you write this "iface eth0 inet static"

@LuisAlvarado it's there. probably not hit Shift+Enter before pasting.

a ok, well with that you did a static connection

okay thanks! off topic question, how to hell my moden knows not to give ubuntu to new ip again?

might be worth noting that just because you set it statically on the client end, that doesn't mean the router won't re-allocate it to someone else when the lease is up. you need to know what your dhcp address range is and set the local address outside of that, but inside the routable address space for your presumably home network.

your router won't force an ip on it if you don't ask for one.

Yes, like Abraham says
here is a good and easy guide for it
ok this is what I have come out
if you want to know if the IP is static or dynamic do the following

cat /var/log/syslog |grep DHCP

If some IPs appear, then it is dynamic, if not, then static
but like I said before, if you used static in the inet, then you have set the ip static, if not it would be something like iface eth0 inet dhcp

6:22 PM
Guys, be aware that his question is about an external 'bought' domain and will require an external IP address to work properly. His Ubuntu box only has a local IP due to NAT.

A ok thats a question, where?

31 mins ago, by Arto
Hello, I did just buy a new domain for my web project, and now I want to add it to my server computer (running ubuntu server). But now when I started to read some help pages and such, I still have no clue how to set it up. Now I did change my primary network interface to use static ip, but I am not sure did I do it correctly.

I think I need a better modem to get all things work correct this is so locked box, cant change nothing..

He wants to assign the domain name to his computer?

@Arto If it doesn't allow you to do port forwarding (DNAT) you won't get far in setting up a server at home.

6:25 PM
can you tell me if you have direct connection to your modem?

@LuisAlvarado Yeah I have a direct connection on it.

ok does your modem let you open all ports for forwarding

I can add new nat rules for it, but there is no option to add all ports open at once.

is the IP you have right now the 192.168.1.100

@Arto no need. just port 80 for basic web, 443 for https

6:27 PM
you only need for a website the 80 port and any other you want to use for services

yep, I did add rule to port 80, but it will ask ip, should I put that static ip on it?

@Arto he's looking for the dmz host option if he wants all ports at once

that way you tell the modem that anything that comes from internet asking in port 80 should go to your computer

yeh, thats done now

6:29 PM
yeah, my fault, was asking only if the modem let him do that, but it is actually a bad idea
ok do you have apache installed?

@Arto Oh and check if 192.168.1.100 is not in the space (pool) for addresses being assinged automatically to other devices. You'll get in trouble (IP conflicts) in case your router will happily assign this address to other devices.

i think the modem can resolve that for the automatic addresses
it can check for what IPs are static and remove them from the dhcp ones

@Arto destination IP? local IP? what kind of IP does it ask for? I assume local, so the 192.168... address

except if it is one of those very cheap modems that come in cereal boxes

really Superuser talk here... blegh.
bye for now. I'm gone. good luck @arto

6:36 PM
@LuisAlvarado But in wich IP now I should look into my webpage?

the one from icanhazip.com

Troubleshooting

No IP address obtained!
Your DSL Connection is active but without internet connectivity.
This may be due to wrong PPP identifiers or transient failure and delays in connection setup.
Correct your PPP identifiers, or try again in a few minutes.

it might not be hairpinning traffic. you shouldn't use the global address from the local network. check it from a phone or something

still not working, tested it with phone, no error just not found.

then try the local address locally.
your isp might also block port 80 incoming

6:49 PM
with local address it work, and no isp isn't blocking. Should be some setup in ubuntu now.

Sorry was cooking lunch
well was SAVING lunch from dying
go here
tell me what IP it says
lol ok was reading the above, the icanhazip is cool hehe

ikr
epic for shell scripting
no. should be router misconfiguration or isp.

if local address works from another computer, it's your router or the isp

did not know that one, gonna recommend that one now hehe
ok do the following
curl automation.whatismyip.com/n09230945.asp
run that line in the terminal
if you don't have curl then
curl ifconfig.me
i think that is all

oh.my.god. sorry, i found something too funny not to share.

8:43 PM
@guntbert I see pattern too.

@Flabricorn, thx - any idea whom to ask about that? It is the same on meta.

@guntbert No idea, I've never seen that problem before.

@Flimm - You are right about stackexchange being a english only site. It is very difficult for users of other languages that really have to claw their way into learning english just to make a question or answer something.
For me I have to spend several minutes creating a question or answer and double or triple check them to see if they are in english correctly, not to mention that if I want to help somebody in my country it is 0% effective since sharing my questions or answers will only help english users. So I can not get for example votes from people of my country to know if I have helped them since from start they can't read english most of the ones I try to help.
So at the end, I am hoping that somehow, the work I have done here will get to spanish speakers (In my case) in a somewhat spanish askubuntu version.
Between that and new words I have to learn literally everyday from other english users here, well you can see how hard it is for me. It is a good experience to learn english of course (Forcefully) but not much when I want to show an answer or question to a fellow colleague, friend or student.

@LuisAlvarado +1

@Flabricorn thanks friend, what country are you from?

@LuisAlvarado Oh, I'm from the United States, I don't have problems with the language, but I fully support what you were saying.

thanks buddy, well it is the same at the end when one wants to learn something in another language. +1 to you ^^

9:12 PM
Why thank you.
If Stack Exchange made the Badges into Hats, the competition for Badges would be wild.

hahah why yes it will
This time around I got 1st place but I really doubt il get it again with so little time free

Hello guys
how are you doing?
I invite gentlemen and ladies to discuss my idea. Thx in advance: askubuntu.com/q/236733/119087

in theory, global configs are in etc, user configs are in home, and relatively volatile per app data is in var.

so the answer is copy those folders and dgpk --get-selections > list. cat list > dpkg --set-selections.

@AbrahamVanHelpsing dude you NEED to write that in some answer
simple and to the point

he revised the question to include everything but etc and var...because every app obviously only has per user settings ;)

Going to quote you on that line for my students. Easiest way possible to explain all 3

there is any one here that know how to embed AJAX scripts in HTML?

I do it via jquery to save time
an example
but if you want to do it via jquery i recommend $.post
super easy

pagina html <--> archivo js <--> php

ahhh
eso no lo sabia

pagina html tiene en el head un archivo js que llama a php, le pide los datos y se los envia a html
lo super mas simple que se puede hacer rapido sin pedirte datos seria algo asi

giving a quick example

I know :)

@iSeth has it never happened that you programmed something like 5 years ago and you still remember a bunch of stuff from it

@LuisAlvarado not yet... I haven't been doing it for five years yet ;)

A2DP (bluetooth stereo audio) requires Pulseaudio to be configured/installed, right? (GUI way I mean)

10:28 PM
I don't really know. Sounds probable though.

well pulseaudio comes installed by default
if A2DP needs pulseaudio then it can read from it the minute you use it

anyone ever installed pantheon?
I was gonna follow the instructions here, but I'm wondering how I would remove it.

does it have a ppa
if it has a ppa it is easier to go back
if not, then... well...
CHAOS TIME FTW!

there is one here
I'm not sure how to install it from the PPA though
seems you need alot of different packages

@LuisAlvarado It appears that Lubuntu installs come without Pulse... askubuntu.com/a/236193/88802 (comment below)

10:41 PM
well, I'll try this answer and see what happens.

@gertvdijk yeah just checked on the other Pc
lubuntu does not use pulse on 12.10
uses alsa

@LuisAlvarado ok thanks. I got very contradicting Google results on it.

but if the user wants to install it I think they can with the pulseaudio package and I think there is another one for the tools of pulse
pavu control
well it was something like that
I know it was the pulseaudio server and the pav tools, dont remember the actual names

11:29 PM
Damn. Did I even bother answering this?

A: First time Xubuntu user

gertvdijkRemove the media from your PC of which you're running Xubuntu from and reboot. E.g: If you've tried it from a CD/DVD, remove that from the optical drive. If you put it on a USB flash drive, remove the USB flash drive.

jrg
@Flabricorn I'm available anytime from 3:30 to when they close tomorrow.

Well, I'm using Pantheon.
I like it so far.

jrg
I haven't tried it. Got any screenshots? :-)

Q: The "disable" tag is meta and can be removed

Jorge Castrodisable is meta, it can probably be removed.

@jrg It remains to be seen if he is well as of tomorrow.

11:34 PM
@jrg I'll get one in a sec ;)

jrg
@Flabricorn right. Just an FYI.

oh good grief.

@jrg Thank you.

did it again.

@iSeth Well it IS gnome-shell.

11:35 PM
true, but Gnome shell is better than all the rest IMO. Though I haven't seen Lxde

@iSeth KDE?

@Flabricorn I do like KDE. So actually I guess KDE is better than Gnome by a little bit. KDE doesn't like my graphics card on this computer though.
@jrg okay getting screenshot. There was something I had to do (which I do to every DE) first.

@iSeth Gotcha. I like to stick with defaults.

I thought you were the kind of guy who changed everything, borked it and had to reinstall? (like me)
@jrg ^--

@iSeth Ah, I did, but that became tiresome because I could never find an alternative desktop environment I liked.

11:44 PM
yeah, none of them are particularly awesome.

Unity works. I would use something alternate if I made it myself.

One thing I don't like about Pantheon is I can't use 'Super' to open the applications menu
@Flabricorn Unity is nice.

@iSeth Does it work? Then use it.

If there was a super awesome DE, Unity wouldn't have gotten this many users.
@Flabricorn I'm getting to that point.

If I could make my own environment, I would myself.

11:49 PM
Now that you mention it, I'm not sure what my favorite DE would be like... probably something like OSX... idk.
@JorgeCastro are you sure this is a bug? I can confirm that I get it too.

Perfectionist "Edited first answer by @JorgeCastro" Expected such a badge to arrive. But no.
>.<

lol

I feel DE of OS X feels clunky, I like Gnome 2.
Off I go! Bye everyone!

@Flabricorn bye

idk, I haven't used a Mac extensively, but I don't like all Gnome 2's menus.
@Flabricorn Cya!
