@Oli potatoe potatoe (potay-toe potat-toe)

@JorgeCastro @jrg

Oli
Nobody says potatoe. (it's potato)

look at United, it's basically an ubuntu color pallete ootb

Hay @AmithKK

5:00 PM
something we might find useful for the cleanup stuff, etc.

@William Hey

/me is really becoming a fan of bootstrap

Meme!

Ok, now I have to go find out what this bootstrap is all about.

bootstrap == RAD library for web design.
jQuery UI ... but somewhat good.

5:03 PM
Oh, interesting.

And its backed by twitter

Oli
@JorgeCastro I'll have to give that a go on my next project.

man this looks great for so many things
/me will blog it

it's less: we're going to abstract everything and make shit complicated to maintain, and more: lets do things right... but pretty and make it scalable.

Mhmm, that looks very interesting and if even the rlemon approves of it, then it can't be bad.

5:06 PM
Don't you hate it when you go to the fridge (at work) all hungry for you lunch, and you just then remember taking it out of the fridge, bagging it, packing utensils, putting it by the door, and walking out.
@OctavianDamiean i wouldn't use it... lesser of two evils IMO
but I do see it's benefit. I just don't like this "Lets make all the webpages look the same!" mentality.
where did creativity go?
oooo almost at 6K global rep :P

Creativity is expensive!

Oli
@rlemon I hate it when you're all hungry for your lunch when suddenly @OctavianDamiean starts jabbering on about wangling his unicorn around in general chat room... And suddenly you don't feel like lunch any more.
5

only if it's good creativity. my 5year old nephew is creative... his cartoon people look like the flying spaghetti monster

haha :D

lol

5:09 PM
@Oli, it's ok... if you read my story, i forgot to put my meat in the fridge.
IKR?

Oli
I know right

Why you're still black @jrg?
Seems a little inappropriate whrn used individually

Y U SO MEAN TO MEH?

DAMN PEOPLE! FREAKING SAY WHAT YOU WANT TO SAY! ADDING MORE AND MORE ACRONYMS TO EVERY DAY LIFE HAS GOT TO STOP!

@OctavianDamiean Never

5:11 PM
Soon you'll just see
YM, WHLN. IWUFYBYNS
(Yo man, what happened last night. I waiting up for you but you never showed)

Oh wow!

(Oh yeah, Acronyms are Awesome or not, Depends on who you ask)

STFU
(stop the freak undressing)

Why was I kicked

muahahaha

5:13 PM
@Oli -.- :D

OY isn't really an acronym, if you were welsh you would understand "OY" to be "ohh yea"

Oy vey (), or just oy, is an exclamation of dismay or exasperation It is a cognate of the German expression Oh weh, or Au weh, a common expression used in Bavaria and Austria in similar situations, combining the German and Dutch exclamation Au! meaning "Ouch/Oh" and the German word Weh, a cognate of the English word woe (as well as Dutch wee meaning pain). The expression is also related to Oh ve, an older Danish expression that derives from Low German and Oy Wah, an expression used with a similar meaning in the Montbéliard region in France. Alternative theories for the origin of the Yidd...
@rlemon What's Liddle actually gonna do?

BBT

Liddle == (L)emon's port of jsF(iddle)

Oh, I see. :)
Basically jsfiddle without any library support? :P

5:19 PM
no i'll have library support.
beefing out the editor.
that is mainly it.
and tweaking a few of the UI / account things.

But I guess when someone selects a library then an alert dialog will popup and say Oh hey, using a library is lame, just sayin'.

Liddle may eventually become just the editor. (if it works and people hop on board with the idea that coders like editors in their webpages!)
no, but I would like to add a mechanism to display how much of the library you are utilizing.
libraries are not bad, people haphazardly using them for a HURR DURR application is.
don't include jQuery just to use $.inArray(), or just to use sizzle.

@rlemon Now that sounds like an interesting idea.

@OctavianDamiean my faux pas when libraries are concerned is not the library (ok jQuery does suck... but for very real and specific reasons), it's how the community has grown into the beast that doesn't understand what a local variable is. or what a scope chain is.
you have all of these "jQuery developers" who don't understand that it is a abstraction library for javascript. not a language to replace javascript.
otherwise, when used by a competent developer, they offer a more rapid application development cycle. so +1 for deadlines, -1 for promoting incompetence.

WHAAA!? U mean jQuery isn't a language? :D
heh, I understand you though. :)

5:28 PM
and you can't tell the guy who's only using the $() magic for selectors to "just use sizzle". they always jump on the defensive and make elaborate claims that "you don't know what you're talking about"
or they claim +33kb a page is "not that much overhead"
33kb a page is not.... +33kb a page is...

Oli
@rlemon While I sort of agree with you, that's the point of jQuery. It abstracts away from the flaws and shortcomings of real Javascript so you only ever need to know a subset and the version that jQuery replaces. It sometimes helps to understand what's going on when you fire off selectors but it's not essential.

anyways... FINALLY lunch time.
@Oli HTML5Shim man! HTML5Shim!

This is the proper time for an Oy vey!

Oli
@rlemon What of it?

bye all!
http://chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/2500/meme
Meme!

5:32 PM
first off, there are no 'flaws or shortcomings' in javascript. There are massive inconsistencies in the engines which parse it. (The language is as designed. and if you don't like it's design... use Dart). We are specifically discussing the shotcommings in ES5 (DOM API)
that is what jQuery tries to abstract... but why?
abstraction == bad (imo)
polyfill > abstraction
good read if anyone is interested in the subject. gist.github.com/1613169

@rlemon So basically you want to say that the concept of global scope is good?
This is not about jQuery now.

@OctavianDamiean no; i'm saying the developer should understand what a scope / global scope is, before they start using jQuery.

Oh, that is true.

basically EVERYONE who writes CODE (not just JS) should read that article and watch the associated video.
but mostly applies specifically to JS

Oh that gist is from Raynos. :)
Unrelated but still interesting.

Q: Is the recommendation to include CSS before JavaScript invalid?

Sam SaffronIn countless places online I have seen the recommendation to include CSS prior to JavaScript. The reasoning is generally, of this form: When it comes to ordering your CSS and JavaScript, you want your CSS to come first. The reason is that the rendering thread has all the style information...

5:58 PM
I totally love the navigation concept of the Bootstrap site.

Bounty offered: Using a Mac OSX *.keyboard layout specification on Ubuntu 11.10 http://askubuntu.com/questions/93480/using-a-mac-osx-keyboard-layout-specification-on-ubuntu-11-10 #keyboardlayout

@JorgeCastro Would be cool to make an Ubuntu santioned Bootstrap design that followed the Ubuntu guidelines

@MarcoCeppi that's exactly why I posted it
if we had an "official" one then people can reuse it without having to care about the details
any community made site would just automatically be awesome ootb if we gave web developers the right blocks

6:16 PM
great idea

jrg
@JorgeCastro how much fame and fortune would I get for doing that?

for doing what?
oh, for the bootstrap?
I sent it along internally, maybe someone from the web team will just Do It.

jrg
Yeah for the bootstrap.
Oh, thats a shame. ;)

either way I'll get clarification, if they don't have time I'll go for "what if I got a guy to do it and you just have to check it?"
it's not a shame getting someone else to do it for us, heh

jrg
6:27 PM
@BrunoPereira You didn't leave me any flags. :(

o/ @jrg
The blue looks so strange on your name. :P

jrg
So you think I should change it to "overlord and master" or something? :P

@jrg you are using 12.04 with the AMD drivers right?

jrg
@BrunoPereira right now its the open source drivers.
because i'm too lazy to bother compiling them (since they work fine for my usage of 12.04)

6:38 PM
:/

jrg
lkjoel is using them though, he didn't mention any problems when i talked to him.

cool
took me 4 days to bring my systems backup, scared of even updating since everything is running so smooth now :)
I am in love with 12.04, its the actual first Unity I will run with effects enabled.

most of them are KDE tough, nice list. thx

I expect things to be a little more rocky than usual this week

jrg
6:43 PM
You're welcome. Also, suggested reading for ubuntu+1 - askubuntu.com/questions/18641/…
@ajmitch what, because of feature freeze?

@jrg yes

jrg
or is it UI freeze up next? I don't remember

feature freeze this week, which is the big one

Q: Why use try … finally without a catch clause?

Nick RosencrantzThe classical way to program is with try / catch but when is it appropriate to use try without catch? In Python the following appears legal and can make sense: try: #do work finally: #do something unconditional But we didn't catch anything. Similarly one could think in Java it would be tr...

Amazing.

jrg
Gotcha, makes sense.

6:47 PM
Uh-oh... and I have a bunch of packages waiting to get imported...

Hurry up! :)

@ajmitch: Are my packages ready yet... or will it just be too much this cycle?

jrg
askubuntu.com/questions/103510/install-firefox-10-on-precise - this has got to be a duplicate of a real question.

@jrg You mean instead of the canonical question?

jrg
yeah. is there a duplicate? if so, I can't find it.

7:00 PM
Mhmm, not sure. Lemme take a look.

Q: How do I downgrade Firefox?

LudwigI only have 10 addons installed but many of them they stop working on every update. Since the updates to not bring any new noticeable features but break them I don't want any updates anymore. I could lock firefox, but of course I still want security updates. I want to "pin" it to 7.* or prefera...

Not exactly the same but related.
All Firefox downgrade questions we have are rather specific. That is from version X down to Y.
We should have a How do I Firefox--? question.

jrg
well, i think we're looking for one specifically related to extension versions.

Actually that question is not really just about downgrading it but about downgrading it from U+1.
Which is a nice question.
What was the close-vote decay time? Two days?
Should I convert it to a more generalized question?

jrg
Something like that.
ask, then if yes please convert it to a more generalized question, i'll camp out on it for the next week and make sure it stays open, by then the close votes should all be gone.

Ask? Meta?
I mean it is clearly what the user wants. He wants FF-- on U+1.
Man that looks nasty.

jrg
Ask as in leave a comment - i always do that before I dramatically modify the question to make it general.

7:13 PM
@OctavianDamiean Just change it and leave a comment explaining why you did it, at the moment it is off topic, 1 more vote and will be closed.

Alright, first attempt.

@GeorgeEdison sorry, I'm a horrible person who hasn't put aside nearly enough time to get things done, but at least I know a couple of release team people who'll let me get packages in post-freeze if I ask really nicely

Now I have to find an answer to this.
Oh yea, don't forget to massively up-vote the question. :)

7:31 PM
hi this is a kind of real time help. please have a look at

Q: How to resume a svn download?

bubbleI was trying to download a very big package using svn. It got interrupted after about an hour due to internet connection failure. Now when I have restored the connection is it possible to resume the download from the point where it earlier left? I used the following command to begin the download ...

Does Subversion have a status command?

svn status

Kinda like git status?
heh
Alright.

@Octavian is it possible to resume ?

So the current state is like on the screenshot?

7:35 PM
yup

is not a Subversion specialist

hmm

Mhmm. Not sure how Subversion handles interruptions to be honest.

i got a link
would like to verify before i mess up

Phew. If you want to make sure without risking to mess something up I would propose you try to checkout another repository somewhere and interrupt the process manually.

7:40 PM
hmm

After interrupting it, try what that article said.

okay can you tell how to bring my cursor back to normal state

I'm sure there are some Subversion experts in here that laugh about me right now. :D
Oh, leave it like that for now. Just open another terminal instance.
0
A: How to resume a svn download?

solssonAs soon as you have started the check out, subversion creates working copy meta data in the folder. Thus, you can run svn up <wc-dir>. After a terminated operation however, you might need to run svn cleanup <wc-dir> first.

There you go, someone answered the question. :)
Try it out and if it is correct and solves your problem, make sure to mark it as the correct answer and up-vote it.

Anyone remember the Juju command for SSH'ing into a service unit?

juju ssh nodename
I think.

7:46 PM
Ah, I was using the wrong number.
Heh, the unit hasn't even come up :P

Oh right! I forgot about the numbers. :)

I've always wondered why juju bootstrap and juju deploy do not require root privs. yet juju destroy-environment does.

jrg
juju status to get the nodename, and then juju ssh nodename
iirc.

wonders if that would be a good Ask Ubuntu question

jrg
7:49 PM
what, how to SSH into a juju box? sure.

juju ssh unit/unit_number worked.
Example: juju ssh mysql/0

Actually both.

Juju is sooo hard to bootstrap.

:D
phahaha xD
Spilled my tea! :D
This is just hilarious. You made my day.

8:15 PM
in the first answer to this question can someone tell where is .svn directory and where is the log file

Q: What to do when 'svn cleanup' fails?

Rob WalkerI have a lot of changes in a working folder, and something screwed up trying to do an update. Now when I issue an 'svn cleanup' I get: >svn cleanup . svn: In directory '.' svn: Error processing command 'modify-wcprop' in '.' svn: 'MemPoolTests.cpp' is not under version control MemPoolTests...

ok here is a dousy.
I wanna run dual monitor... I have no dual monitor video output but i do have onboard video and a spare video card.

@bubble If you do a ls -a in the working directory then you'll find it. ;)

can I run one monitor off the onboard and one off the video card.

Uh, I'd say not but I'm not sure.

@jrg any ideas?

jrg
8:18 PM
@JorgeCastro your total s3 bill is 6 cents. That must be nice. ;D

12 cents actually
for the other stuff
but 6 of it was the redditing

jrg
@rlemon for doing a double monitor thing with both your onboard and spare video cards?

yup

jrg
sounds like you need to do two xservers.

Ruby man! Ruby!

8:19 PM
you need 2 x servers

^ showing my lack of understanding.

jrg
@JorgeCastro not bad. not bad at all.

ok so how would I do that?

@jrg omg I was way off on my pricing
it's actually 16 cents. :)

jrg
Oh you were off by 10 cents O_o thats a lot of money. :P

8:28 PM
16 total, 6 only for the redditing.

jrg
how much bandwidth is that again? 30-50GB+?
oh. gotcha.

hah, I think we spent more than that in electricity talking about it
$0.125 per GB - first 1 TB / month of storage used
$0.01 per 10,000 GET and all other requests

jrg
thats not bad.... wonder what the cost of doing a temporary ubuntu ISO mirror for a week after release would be...

How to resume a svn download? http://askubuntu.com/questions/104515/how-to-resume-a-svn-download #svn

@jrg that's just a matter of time, we've got the normal archive in there already

jrg
8:40 PM
@JorgeCastro I might do that, and also buy a linode+some extra bandwidth for that week.
for 11.10 I had my linode up doing torrent seeding, went through like, 200GB or something crazy like that.

heh
s3 and cloudfront cache more aggresively the more popular a file is
so theoretically I'd like to see if on release day the speed increases

jrg
9:05 PM
Anyone here have chromium installed and configured? i need to know if the config directory is ~/.config/chromium-browser.

It is ~/.config/chromium/ for me.

jrg
Ok, thanks.

9:30 PM
@OctavianDamiean Same for me.

9:43 PM
Looks like my Ubuntu VM crashed.
Great, filesystem errors. Waits...

@Lekensteyn I've removed my old comments from your Optimus question to clean it up a bit.

10:00 PM
great, I have an SSD, now for the pain of transferring everything onto it

When you say "Everything" I hope you mean "Applications where load times and loading resources are critical"
otherwise you're not doing yourself any favors.

@JorgeCastro the comments on this post of yours are making me laught, NM rage ftw! plus.google.com/u/0/116015965439782966698/posts/chtUpGCs6eR

@rlemon it's a laptop, I mean everything

jrg
Wait, is the system deleting comments about "possible duplicate" and moving them into the actual post now? Not sure I like that....

@ajmitch how big is the SSD, surly you are not keeping 'files' on it? (movies, documents, ect.)
OS, applications, cache, and config - should be it.

10:10 PM
@jrg The system has recently deleted comments with possible duplication in them (four months ago?). It's always added the Possible Duplicate header though

jrg
@MarcoCeppi I know about the header, was just trying to figure out why my comments where gone. . .

anyways. home time.
bbl all.

jrg
I think that makes it both confusing and wonderful for the user. hm. shrug

Btw - Liddle... TAB now works on selection ranges and no selection.

It removes them, comments are stupid old and not needed. Why have a comment saying it's a duplicate when the post now says it?

jrg
10:12 PM
I guess my main concern is, does a user get notified?

which user?

@rlemon 240GB, I've got an external hard drive for movies & the like
@rlemon it's not like there are a lot of options when it comes to fitting drives inside a laptop ;)

jrg
The user whos question got closed as a duplicate.
Ok, that wasn't a very good question, because obviously SE thought it out before they pushed it, so I'll just hush now. :P

If you add a comment then remove it, the user still gets an inbox notification

jrg
Ah gotcha, Ok, i'm happy now.

10:33 PM
