9:00 PM
Anyway, anyone can edit those sites.

user136984
Well, all I know is that in England as far as I know it has never had that meaning.

Not mw or dictionary.com
and if people disagreed on Wikt or wiki, it'd be edited out pretty quickly.

yes MW is not editable, and it also does not take a stance as you pointed out -- it also says it's a synonym for "chicken"

heh

user136984
Wikipedia isn't the world. I've dealt with them before they are generally quite left-wing and would probably hold those silly views.

user136984
9:02 PM
Yes, maybe it had a new meaning in the US, but for us it does literally just mean "chicken". :D

user136984
Get used to it. >:P

it might be a meaning of that, but still, I told you that I do not enjoy the word in general due to previous derogatory use of that towards me, and you're calling me a troll.

now we can have the british english is the right english discussion if people are feeling froggy

user136984
I always say anyway, words don't matter, it's the intention and meaning behind them, especially so with words that can have multiple meanings.

also, i called nobody a troll.

user136984
9:03 PM
@RobotHumans: You bloody frog! >;P
2

anyway, I'm not trying to pour gasoline on the fire here. I think it's important to recognize not everyone has the same lexicon of meanings and if a difference arises, you can educate them as to your view, but you can't generally require people to give profuse apologies

^^ this, and i did say sure. fine. won't use it if it hurts your feels.
multiple times

user136984
@Avery Then that is your issue that you should deal with, external things can never truly be controlled and thus you will never be happy with it. Also the external things have no obligation to change, in fact they are not really helping you if they do.

user136984
@Chan-HoSuh I'm adding rocket fuel! >:D

9:07 PM
@ParanoidPanda if I flagged it or fought with him, it'd be my problem. I asked him kindly not to.

And I agreed. And we're still talking about after I took the time to walk the dog and it did its business.

wow are we still going on about this? sheesh people.
2

Anywhoo. @Chan-HoSuh thoughts on python bot platforms for forex?

user136984
@Avery: There is a general rule for telling if something is your problem or someone else's, basically if your happiness depends on an external state changing or staying in a certain way then it is your problem and you will never truly be happy because you will never truly be able to control anything external to you. You can only be free once you realise that all problems are internal to you and your attachment.

user136984
@Seth: And now we are even getting to the meaning of life. ;D

9:09 PM
@RobotHumans not really -- except that if you get serious about it, the data quality is a big issue and you might want to get data from vendors like Bloomberg. They have a decent Python API.

@ParanoidPanda I thought Deep Thought solved that one? :P

@Chan-HoSuh Thanks for the tip man. Any discords or whatever you are aware of that discuss that sort of thing?
@Seth It just keeps getting more efficient at Go. They started calling it master after it's last rewrite.

user136984
@Seth: No, that was a different computer I designed which would which was unfortunately destroyed to make way for a hyper space bypass.

@RobotHumans unfortunately no. The little I am aware of, I pick up through my work.

and I'm not kidding. I watched 6 hours for 2 matches to watch its current excursions in to ripping people apart on ght Go board

9:11 PM
@RobotHumans Wow, did they? I was actually referring to HHGTTG though ;p

@Seth sorry, deepmind not deep thought.

Something is wrong when you call a computer "master" nervous laughter
@RobotHumans Ah. I knew what you meant, although I had completely forgotten what Google named that computer

Yeah. Evidently it's pretty slick. static 30-45 second tree search times now. it's beautiful. Oddly, I don't think the human player got the compliment I saw come out of Google. They said that alphago/master actually said he played the first 50 moves perfectly. What does it take for the machine that beats you twice in a row to say you did something perfectly?

@RobotHumans haha, bittersweet I'm sure

^^ but that won't get a star. too cerebral.

9:16 PM
if you think about the number of games AlphaGo has played, including against versions of itself, it is way past humans on the evolutionary scale
this reinforcement learning stuff is like genetic algorithms on steroids

user136984

If a supercomputer beats me at anything, but then says "the first half of your game was perfect. the second half not so much. but you realized it was over and forfeit when people were calling it a draw". I would take it as the highest form of compliment.
@Chan-HoSuh That is so very true.
I'm waiting for them to cut their teeth on international markets or announce that they never will

I think it's only a matter of time before they develop more powerful AI to help fight terrorism. And then it's gonna get really weird when people are detained/imprisoned for reasons humans don't understand.

When it gets there, I expect it will be walled at detained.

Even if so, that's not the real danger. The real danger is when humans start trusting AI to make important decisions without needing to understand them
And at the moment, that might seem implausible, but fear has a way of overcoming rationality.

9:21 PM
I had this exact conversation in another room a while ago. "You wrote it, how can you not understand what it's doing" -- "Clearly you need to read up on high number of input scoring systems"

I guess, fear and greed.

I was the second guy. And yes.

There are supposedly some systems like that run by some hedge funds now... they take in a variety of sources from newspapers, economic releases, etc and come to strange conclusions the human managers don't understand
but they go and put down some millions on it anyway ;)

user136984
There is no logical reason for the AI to just suddenly become destructive like us because we are actually quite illogical in that way, or rather it would follow a different and more specific social survival logic rather than that of a new AI being born into this world. So the only real problem would come about is if we designed it in our own image and probably for military purposes, which unfortunately, we probably will.

user136984
We already know how to make babies that are built and done properly, why try to do it ourselves from scratch? Playing god never ended up very well in the movies... I'd take a few lessons from that.

9:26 PM
@ParanoidPanda Until we make an accidental collision in their profit matrix that involves us not being there. note to self, never tell an algo to be self preserving

well one form of danger comes from augmented human intelligence

@Chan-HoSuh that i have also heard
@Chan-HoSuh i think it's quite the opposite actually. Elon is actually arguing IN that direction, and I agree with him.

augmented humans would be destructive, presumably, because they are still human. But they would be super-intelligent compared to normal humans and so there is a danger in that, if there is an imbalance in who gets the technology. Well, Elon Musk seems more worried about the non-human intelligence aspect.

yeah. he's worried about taking the human switch out

Elon is a busy guy
he's worried about traffic in LA, traveling to mars, and fighting sentient machines

9:30 PM
hah. fair enough

maybe these are just aspects of the same problem...

no. when you don't need money any more, you just start trying to solve harder problems. he's trying to keep his mind busy i think

maybe it sounds a bit strange, but I have become a fan of his recently

i was a fan when they reverse landed a rocket on a moving platform. it took at least one crazy person and at least one smart person to make that work.

Hey @NathanOsman You around?

9:34 PM
those are the ones i like. when a smart person says "you can't do that" and a crazy person says "sure you can" and then they wind up making it work.

yeah, the craziness is an important, perhaps the most crucial, ingredient

@AndroidDev Just got back.
What's up?

@NathanOsman I've got an alpha version of live preview in ChronoSnap for you to test :)

Oh cool.

@NathanOsman halp

9:41 PM
@TheWanderer Wat.

error

Wat.

bad auth URL or something

Did you use valid credentials?

idk
my account is Google
so that might be it

9:42 PM
Of course you're getting an error if you don't use valid credentials.

well it's not a bad credentials error

It's not going to log you in if you don't use the right email and password :P
@TheWanderer read the error string

"unable to read auth URL"

> "An unexpected error has occurred. This may be caused by invalid credentials..."

9:43 PM
Wat.
You need to update then.

@NathanOsman it's the latest one o_O

Not if you're getting that error message.

unless debug versions don't work

@NathanOsman - The main thing I need you to test is that the preview isn't skewed. drive.google.com/file/d/0B-V1bipqDdfkejVSUGJsNWJOTTg/…
It looks okay on my end,
but who knows what it might do to you :P

@AndroidDev The preview is working.

@NathanOsman my project is up to date; just installed a signed version; still error

oh... you're a bot... nevermind.

9:46 PM
@NathanOsman OK, the next question is where should we put it? Perhaps a low-opacity version behind the entire activity?

@AndroidDev That might be neat.

so my auth URL is emtpy or null
@NathanOsman when are you going to add OpenID support? sheesh
:p

Not for a while due to complicated-ness.
Anyone can add Stack Exchange credentials to their account.
It's not hard.

where

9:51 PM
I don't see a straight up SE option
it's just Google, Facebook and some other things

Enter https://openid.stackexchange.com in the box.
Then click "register" I think.

sorry I don't mean OpenID

We might have to add this to the README since it isn't terribly intuitive.

I mean something that supports using my Google login

That's going to be hard to implement.
(If it is even possible.)

9:52 PM
well I only have Google, Facebook and Yahoo logins
no normal SE login

user136984
Wow... The chat can go a long way if you just step out for a few minutes!

user136984
:D

user136984
@RobotHumans Why do we need AI though and all this stuff? Why can we just be happy?

user136984
I love it how this question has a big:

user136984

user136984
9:55 PM
At the end! :D

user136984
It's original is all I can say.

user136984
Anyway, it's getting rather late over here and I've had a long day so...

user136984
Goodnight folks! :)

@NathanOsman pls
halp
wat do

10:15 PM
zach rekt

@NathanOsman Okay, something like this?

@edwinksl pls
@NathanOsman why is my auth URL empty?
also, I did not know the String class had an isEmpty() method
I've been using String.length == 0
@NathanOsman are you alive

10:32 PM
@NathanOsman question

Yesh?

if someone enters an email that doesn't have a valid format, should I setHint saying the email isn't valid, clearing the boxes, or should I put a toast?
HES ALiVE

We don't really need to worry, do we...
If it's invalid, auth will fail anyway.

it's a UX thing
I'm also just preventing it from submitting if the boxes are empty

Good idea about not submitting with empty inputs.
That's worth doing.

10:36 PM
OK
so I'll just ignore invalid emails then
but how do I get my SE login?

@NathanOsman - Uploading a new APK for you to test

@TheWanderer Hang on.
I'm doing something really important at the moment.

10:55 PM
Ahh
I didn't have a password set

11:11 PM
@NathanOsman committed. Go check out the changes

@NathanOsman --^

too noisy

@Chan-HoSuh i just scrolled up and it looked like there was some drama lol

@edwinksl and you missed it.. shame

no chat flags were raised though
so not exactly drama of the highest quality

11:21 PM
tsk
rationalization; classic defense mechanism

i have yet to exercise my 10k chat rep power

omg
u have 10k
but still not on AU
skreb

that's an accurate characterization

scrubwinksl
Scrubwin Knoob

lololol

11:23 PM
huehuehue

@TheWanderer Well there is the toggle to turn it off... what would you suggest?

that background should be blurred or removed

@TheWanderer But it's the live preview....

ohhhh
so it's the camera's view and not just a random shot of a keyboard

right

11:27 PM
that makes so much more sense...

git hub scrub
:D

This isn't on github yet

well yet it

I'll push to Nathan's repo when I'm all through
Plus then you'd have to download and build it instead of just installing the pre-built...

11:30 PM
I always build my app before I push

But anyways.... now knowing it's the live preview, any other suggestions?

not sure

@TheWanderer The other option is to put it below the text, but that only works for tablets... not for phones

what's the purpose of the app

It's Nathan's Chronosnap

11:34 PM
what if it were a separate view?

@TheWanderer Like that? --^

I was thinking like a new activity or something
maybe a TabView?

Oh
hmmmm

or a ViewPager

Well it's really up to @NathanOsman

11:43 PM
if he ever comes back
