He has a very odd description... :D

@ParanoidPanda you always need to save some for where you really need them :=)

@ParanoidPanda yeah it's been a long time, how are you?

user136984
@Rinzwind: Yes, I agree, I normally do that but I just thought I would be out for the evening so I didn't think I would need them.

user136984
8:14 PM
@RonnieDroid: I'm fine, how are you?

@ParanoidPanda I'm fine too but busy trying to start an open source project. Writing a novel, writing a movie script, and trying to get out of Iraq haha
@ParanoidPanda still in love with cakes?!

user136984
@RonnieDroid It does sound like you're busy! Good luck with all those! :)

@ParanoidPanda thanks :-D

@ParanoidPanda I'd consider that borderline to offensive... And why does a duck-obsessed person use a giraffe as icon?

user136984
@RonnieDroid That is sad story, I am on a diet, I was getting too fat and the sugar meant that lots of spots would appear on my face, literally one slice of cake would equal 20 spots appearing in 1 night.

user136984
8:19 PM
So I've been off cake and sugar for about 3 months now. :(

that sounds like an allergy

To the person who is sending me spam emails with NSFW titles, not cool.

@ParanoidPanda oh, sorry for that, now you know to never over do the things you love ;-)

user136984
@ByteCommander: Yes, to sugar, I have found if I eat anything with more than 7g of sugar in it that they appear and then stay with me for quite some time... If I stop eating sugar they disappear, then if I eat something sweet like that again they immediately appear again.

user136984
Also my belly gets huge...

user136984
8:21 PM
Sugar has a bad effect on me.

All kinds of sugar or just some?

user136984
@NathanOsman Oh! That's me! Glad you like them! ;P

user136984
(jk)

You also could try allergy pills... Won't help with the weight thoug

@ParanoidPanda sugar is bad for everyone

8:22 PM
only too much is bad

Well, not everyone. But you know what I mean

user136984
@ByteCommander All the normal like cane sugar etc, although someone did give me some sugar made from trees or something the other day and that had no affect on me whatsoever.

@ByteCommander exactly

You could try Stevia as replacement as well

There are those pills people with diabetes use with tea, they call it natural sugar, that can be helpful too.
@NathanOsman answer them and have fun :-D

8:25 PM
@thom oh, just saw your mail

@NathanOsman you used to work with Blender, right? You so made me interested in that software that I have been learning it for a year now :-D

Oh, cool!

@Avery mail shot

user136984
@Avery Nobody with that username in this room, unless you meant ThomasWard, in which case I don't know if the ping thing is case sensitive or not so it might not reach him. But I never tried so I don't know.

@ParanoidPanda it will reach him.

8:27 PM
@Avery Since when are you soliloquizing?

@ByteCommander since I went mad

user136984
@Avery: Ok, it's good to know it's not case sensitive, I just thought I would mention it to you just in case because I hate it when post doesn't get delivered. :)

Ah, k. Good to know.
This room seems to have a bad influence on people

Guys, I am trying to start an open source project to make a software (app) for writing that is cross platform and easy to use, so writers can get into writing and don't get overwhelmed by the app features, I have the design in mind, and I have a programmer (my sister, and she is not so good, this is her first project) so what do you think? Anyone would like to help?

What are you using for development?
Or are you asking for suggestions?

8:33 PM
@NathanOsman I am not sure what to use, I am trying to get as much help as possible, all I have is an idea and a design (in mind) and what I want the app to be.

Python with PyQt would be a good choice.
Python because it is an easy language to get started with.

user136984
@RonnieDroid: What programming language will you be using?

@NathanOsman my sister only knows c++ but the language to use doesn't have to be c++ if that means the app will be better
@NathanOsman that's right, I tried to learn Python some months back, but I had a lot of things to do, so I quit for now
@ParanoidPanda that first message was meant for you :-D
@NathanOsman if written in Python, would it be possible to run it in all major platforms?

Qt is actually written in C++, so that might even be easier.
@RonnieDroid Yes - both Python and PyQt run on Windows and macOS.

user136984
@RonnieDroid: I was going to suggest C++ or Java.

user136984
8:40 PM
But C++ is a good language.

@ParanoidPanda cool, Android and iOS?? Aha, good to know that, I am not a programmer myself, I am a writer, and I just want to make it easier for new writers and writersthat can't pay for software to have something simple yet powerful to use.
@NathanOsman that's cool, what about Android and iOS?

Believe it or not, Qt does actually run on both of those platforms.

user136984
@RonnieDroid I think so.

But developing for them requires quite a bit of extra learning - QML, deployment, etc.

@NathanOsman well, if it is open source, that won't be a problem, because people with that knowledge will be able to help, right?

8:44 PM
Yes, they could.

@NathanOsman in the next few days, I'll write the README and license files and everything and all the necessary documents (no code though) and upload them to gethub and see how it'll go from there

Cool.

Do you think starting with the design first is a good idea?

If you do decide to go C++/Qt, definitely use CMake for building the project.
@RonnieDroid Yes, design is important.

@NathanOsman ummm what is CMake?

8:48 PM
It's a build system for C++ (plus a few other languages).

@NathanOsman oh thank you. I'll check it out

Feel free to ping me if you have any questions.

@NathanOsman that's great, thanks :-)

> How can the output of a command be redirected to a file instead of being displayed on screen?
Type the "greater than" character followed by the file name at the end of the command
It's a left angle bracket people ಠ_ಠ

So I'll give you an idea about the app I want to be made
It will focus on three things, 1 novel writing 2 short-story(articles) 3 moviescript writing.
It will not require the writer to do anything manual, just the wiring, everything should be ready for him as expected in the compelling process.

9:15 PM
Is it just me or does setting up a bridged network get easier with every release?
Only had to add three lines to a file and reboot.

Q: Best/Good tool for monitoring a server, with web interface?

Steven YatesI'm pretty new to Linux and I'm looking for a monitoring tool that has a web front end. Specifically looking for stats on the following: Storage space, Used/Free CPU Activity CPU Temps RAM Usage Everything I would expect from server monitoring software, having the ability to send emails based...

A: Best/Good tool for monitoring a server, with web interface?

Jesse Adelmanhttps://www.icinga.com/, along with deployment via Chef or Puppet. FYI, there is no "best". But Icinga is very good. You can find more on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Icinga You do need to have someone to catch the alerts and interpret the output. :) I am available for hire! ;)

^ especially the "You do need to have someone to catch the alerts and interpret the output. :) I am available for hire! ;)" part is...
look I made alerts
GIVE ME JOB
@ByteCommander nah, I was always crazy

10:17 PM
@Seth have you listened to Sheppard?

@TheWanderer no?
Doesn't ring a bell.

Try listening to Smile by them

Anyway...

user136984
Goodnight folks! :)

user136984
I wish you all peace and loving kindness. :)

You know what would be cool? Stop adding new features and focus on QA!

10:56 PM
no

@Avery 1.5 of what

nus

@badp that's trade secrets right there (CPU rate is the thing in uptime, 1.0 or less is no cpu bottleneck or smth, higher than that is bad, 1.5x of cpu's thingy should be bad)

HI BADP

11:07 PM
HI SETH

NOW KISS

long time no see

how's things

Well, we haven't burned down the room yet.

11:08 PM
So we've got that going for us.

also hi Nathan

Hello, badp.

@badp I'm alive. That's the best I can say for myself atm. The room is doing great though :D
how about yourself?

ah, I always have something to complain about
or one hundred things

I am complaining about how Android's mDNS API is a train-wreck on wheels.

11:11 PM
I've been dealing with a bug where changing languages five times in a row results in suboptimal™ behaviour
"it's probably a 5 minute fix"

Spoken language or programming language?

written! you know, on a website.

I've been doing that all week, lol. Python for my web app, Java for my Android app, C++ for my desktop app, and the odd Go stuff.

me too. I've been working on this 5 minute fix for 5 workdays now.
most of it is dealt with now tho. now I can go back to regular yak shaving.

11:35 PM
> "For simplicity, Android groups all actual screen densities into six generalized densities: low, medium, high, extra-high, extra-extra-high, and extra-extra-extra-high."
Lol.

where's the extra-extra-extra-extra-high, Google?
huh?

11:47 PM
Give them a week.

The extra-highness just got an extra higher!
