lolol

@ByteCommander I am impressed. Also, the other chart shows that Python, Ruby, and C devs are least likely to get stuck in vim. So yeah, I am in that category
@ByteCommander also, about that comment stuff. I'm not mad at you. The other commenter sort of pissed me off. I overreacted a bit

12:49 AM
@Avery I usually hate that meme.. but that one is HILARIOUS xD

it was one of the better memes in the last couple years
ughh chrome remote desktop opens a new x session and lack of activity in that keeps getting my pc's screen light go down to 50% every minute or so
uninstalled. Will stick to good ol' vnc.

@Seth what exactly is that meme supposed to mean ? progression to enlightenment?

Basically

WRONG
Your mentality in general is wrong, you can't ask what memes are supposed to mean. They are out there and they're good and that's what matters. All praise the maymay overlords.

raises the third eye's eyebrow

1:00 AM

MAYMAY

@TheWanderer you forgot the 'mate' part. Should be u wot mate ?

1:05 AM
I was talking about relationship stuff, but yeah, I'll give you that - package management can be pain

ah, that's fun
just finished a 3 month long abusive relationship yesterday. I am happy tbh. But yeah, relationships are painful.

@Avery wtf
@Avery @SergiyKolodyazhnyy is the person to talk to about relationships. I'm entirely inexperienced there
but abusive... sounds terrible

I've had a really fun week

yeah you've been here :D

with the "breakup" (aka getting her to accept her to get out of my life, the "breakup" of my part was a long time ago) and with dealing with pedos and stuff. Fun.
Don't ask.

1:11 AM

@TheWanderer Frankly, I think I'm not that good in that department. I screwed up. Royally. Now trying to piece things together

Q: Macbook Ubuntu Server stay on on screen close

user232748So I currently have it so the macbook running Ubuntu server stays on when shut but the screen stays on which I do not want. How can I have the screen turn off but keep everything running?

1:17 AM
@Avery messagèd

1:32 AM
@TheWanderer Fine. I guess it really doesn't fit that well. Any idea for which ASCII text I should match the image with instead?

dunno
o_O
:O
hmm
@NathanOsman can it be case-sensitive?
O\_O

It sure can.
Just kill the lopsided ones then?

yesh

3 hours later…
4:26 AM
@muru Question: how did you figure out that it's a 32-bit binary ? I didn't see any indication of that in the readelf output (referring to askubuntu.com/q/918299/295286)
I mean, I've read through output but I didn't see what part indicates that it's a 32-bit one

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy the offsets in the output are small
64-bit binaries have offsets like this:
Program Headers:
  Type           Offset             VirtAddr           PhysAddr
                 FileSiz            MemSiz              Flags  Align
  PHDR           0x0000000000000040 0x0000000000400040 0x0000000000400040
                 0x00000000000001f8 0x00000000000001f8  R E    8
  INTERP         0x0000000000000238 0x0000000000400238 0x0000000000400238
                 0x000000000000001c 0x000000000000001c  R      1
      [Requesting program interpreter: /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2]

that makes sense. Cool!

That's for Ubuntu's 64-bit bash

So OP's output states "There are 9 program headers, starting at offset 52" , while mine states it's at 64
So that would be the place to look at ?
Hmmm, learned something new today. Cool beans

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy! Just the person I was looking for.
This time, I need your help.

4:35 AM
@NathanOsman yesh ? How can my humble persona help ?

I need to use a simple Unix tool to replace "FROM nathanosman/qt" with "FROM nathanosman/qt-armhf" in the first line of a file.
Basically, I want to stick -armhf on the end of the line.
What tool should I use and what would the command look like?

Likely sed or perl, but let me cook up an actual command in a sec

Cool, that would be awesome.
sed might be best since I am not sure if the host has Perl installed.

$ cat test_file.txt
FROM nathanosman/qt
other stuff
$ sed '1 s/qt/qt-armhf/g' test_file.txt
FROM nathanosman/qt-armhf
other stuff
more stuff$

Excellent! Thanks again!

4:39 AM
That should do it. Add -i flag in front of sed to make actual change to file
Always welcome

This is for my temperature monitoring setup.
I've got this app for my Raspberry Pi that reads the sensor data and feeds it into InfluxDB for later analysis.

Speaking of Raspberry . . . mine may have died . . . I left it over night, and ever since the Snappy doesn't boot on it

Could be the SD card.
Have you tried using a different one?
Do any of the lights (LEDs) come on?

LEDs come on, but it's stuck in perpetual boot, fails and restarts, with tons of error messages
I've a FreeBSD on another sdcard somewhere, but need to find it first

My first hunch whenever a Pi gets in a bootloop is insufficient power.

4:44 AM
I doubt that. I've been using the powersupply and the serial to USB cable is plugged in to the 5V pin on the GPIO
Well, I'll find that FreeBSD card and will see what happens

@NathanOsman So. Verizon is buying Yahoo which includes Flickr.

Wat.
Please don't mess up Flickr...
Otherwise, I may look into self-hosting my photos if Flickr goes downhill.

Yahoo is doing that bad ?

Didn't Yahoo change their name or something?

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy Are you kidding?
@NathanOsman I hope it doesn't.
but of course it also means the ToS and privacy policy are changing.

4:47 AM
Yahoo has turned into a slightly more professional-looking BuzzFeed.

@Seth They were second to Google. I know , competition is tough, plus yahoo mail got hacked, but . . . I didn't expect Verizon to buy them. I mean, other companies, bigger names - maybe

They used to be one of the most respected domains on the net.
Oh how the mighty have fallen.

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy Bigger than Verizon? Verizon is the largest wireless telco in the US..
@NathanOsman Indeed. AOL, Yahoo..

MySpace.
(Yes, I'm that old.)

OK, well . . . I've no idea who is who in the telecom business, so there's my ignorance factor,too

4:49 AM
AT&T is pretty big too.

I still have myspace account . . . I think . . .

Also Comcast started their own mobile phone program: Xfinity mobile. It's really cheap if you are already a Comcast subscriber, but you can't bring you own phone (yet).
It uses Verizon towers and the xfinitywifi hotspots.

Yay, I found my derpy myspace profile myspace.com/sergiy_ceka

@Seth I have an opinion about Comcast, but I won't share it here.

@NathanOsman gchat, if you want :P
I don't have much good to say about them either, though.

4:52 AM
Well, I didn't mean it was private, I meant it was very disparaging :P
Their business practices are highly questionable from what I've heard.

Yes, they are. They are.
But I haven't found a nationwide telco who doesn't have shady business practices. Even Google does.
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy Privacy Badger blocked 49 trackers.. also, are those highschool pics? :D
@NathanOsman actually, my next phone might just be an iPhone, sadly. Google has now started doing really intense location tracking in Android.

@Seth oh, yessir, those are high school pics, when I discovered the joy of some photo editing software (forgot its name), and Scribus . . . or something like that . . .

I hate Apple's closed system, but at least they aren't trying to do data mining on everything single piece of you. At least not that we know.

:(
I better hurry and get the iOS version of NitroShare going.
I'll need to learn Swift. And patience.

Gosh, thank god I'm over the phase of making weird selfies in all sorts of poses and costumes. It's only food now

4:58 AM
Sidenote: data is taking a long time to make the the trans-Atlantic hop from France to the US.
Only about 10 Mbps.

I really wish Ubuntu phone had worked out..

KDE has a phone mobile OS.

The one good thing about how expensive Apple products are is the fact that they have less incentive to do nasty data mining.
@NathanOsman yeah but don't they have even less backing than Canonical?

Yeah, but that might be a good thing in the long run.

True
Well I wish it well.
Hey! They support the 5X!

5:02 AM
Might be worth a shot.

Maybe. The 5X has major bootloop problems that stem from bad soldering. Long term heat cycling brings it on faster. Not sure I want to run a badly optimized OS on a phone that is known to have an issue with bad thermal management :/
def. look into it though
well goodnight.

Hmm... that moment when you realize you just built an app for armhf and the Raspberry Pi you are using it on is armel.

5:35 AM
Raspbian is still on Qt 5.3?
Hmm... this makes things a bit more difficult.

my userscripts are still broken o.O

5:49 AM
@Zanna That worked out really well, thanks for helping me out with it yesterday.

awesome! just upvote it :D
I did nothing... but I knew JV could do it
back in a bit, going to do yoga

6:01 AM
Aha! I figured out why SSH was taking forever. There is an IPv6 misconfiguration. Forcing IPv4 solves the problem or at least works around it.

6:33 AM
Looks like my ISP has messed up their IPv6 configuration. :|

grr

woooooo . . . . don't mind me, just being my usual silly self . . .
BBL, lol, 365 noscope

hi! morning || afternoon || evening (choose 1)

6:50 AM
afternoon to you
@Anwar lol XD
:q!

The analysis was interesting. It says front-end devs are more likely to stuck with it, following the ms devs
But I made the title a little bit click-friendly just like the news site editors these days :P

ironically, this question seems to have a shedload of duplicate answers

@Anwar yeah we already know of this one. Some stats images were on star wall somewhere
Also, Ukraine is the leading country that can't exit vim. You can all blame me for that, lel

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy that's hilarious

@Zanna by the way, don't mind me writing a lengthy and horribly boring answer on that find + xargs question ? I'm in the essay-answer type of mood today

@Zanna can't see anything here!

@Anwar she posted a direct link. hold on, i'll fix that

@Anwar Aww sorry... it's actually from the article anyway

@Zanna Were the questions also duplicate?

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy knock yourself out haha :)

LOL!

@Anwar haha idk about that

@Zanna punches himself too hard and literally knocks himself out

oops sorry

7:00 AM
Frankly because of events of the last few days , I probably deserve to be punched in the face, although I have already slapped myself like countless amount of times

go easy on yourself

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy what happened?!

eh . . . i'll try . . .Anyway, I'm off to YouTube for now.

Don't tell if you don't feel like it though

@Anwar eh, I behaved stupidly and immaturely, basically, and caused whole lot of distress to my girlfriend.
That's all I'm gonna share for now. Off to youtube-land

7:03 AM
take care! cya :)
askubuntu.com/q/688090/61218 The answer is written in the question

7:42 AM
@Anwar Great! Finally somebody's doing something about the VIM addiction epidemic. Think of the children! Quit VIM today!
7
Does somebody else than me have issues with the package repositories of GetDeb/PlayDeb?
apt update complains about HTTP 404 for the Packages files while I can download the same URL just fine with wget.
My best hint so far is unix.stackexchange.com/questions/148303/… but that doesn't give me a fix or work-around.

@DavidFoerster haha that was my first thought when I saw Anwar's comment too
I was like "the anti-vim-ers have gone too far this time!"

I ate a whole loaf of bread (1.5 kg) yesterday. O.O
That is dense dark bread, not fluffy white bread.

haha did you eat anything else?
my landlord went on a business trip and left almost a whole loaf of bread behind... but I don't want to eat it, so it's getting wasted :(

7:58 AM
Yes, the bread and what I put on it were pretty much the only things I ate.

was it especially irresistable bread?

No, it was cheap, generic ALDI bread. But it was fresh which does make it much better.
Maybe I'm a very hungry caterpillar getting ready to transform into a butterfly.

lol maybe

8:17 AM
The best thing about non-alcoholic Hefeweizen beer is that I can drink it for breakfast without remorse. :>
Even better since I stole a proper Hefeweizen glass from the concert I attended on Monday.

user136984
@DavidFoerster: Rye bread is nicer.

Deposit was 2 € so I feel no guilt. :-D
@ParanoidPanda Too much of a niche (here at least) to be turned non-alcoholic.

@DavidFoerster haha techincally you bought it

@Zanna Yeah but they're 10 € a couple at the store.

overpriced XD

8:22 AM
exactly
I doubt the venue paid that much for glasses branded with the logo of the brewer of the beer they sell.
(Maisel’s Weisse btw)

@DavidFoerster @Zanna lol. I purposedly twisted that title just like the news site editors these days :)
Technically it's not a lie as quit is used for exit too!

absolutely
q presumably stands for quit
so vim got itself into this sticky situation

ha ha. yeah

Q: How do I use 2 drives on linux on virtualbox?

user232804I failed to increase the actual size of that disk with 30G so I created another drive but I don't know how to access it. How can I access this other hard disk with 100.7G so that the other doesn't complain of space no more.

8:53 AM
Nice. Sunday is going to be sunny so we can sit outside and have a BBQ while we play Dungeons & Dragons. :>

I just hit my head against water dispenser really hard
my remaining brains hurt

9:48 AM
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy Your statement implies that you lost one or more brains in the process and still have at least two left. :-D
… so I'd say you're no worse off than most people since those have "only" two brains anyway.

lol

10:07 AM
@DavidFoerster lol , i lost some of them long before. Such a waste, right ? Now I have less brains for answering questions on AU. But yes, I guess I ain't doing that bad. By the way, do CPU cores count as brains ?

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy Good question! I'd say no because even simple brains have many more functions than a typical CPU, most notably some kind of short- and long-term memory beyond a handful of registers and possibly cache.

Good point . . .

Conversely, even a relatively simple neural network can perform arbitrary computational tasks (ignoring the obligatory size restriction).

yay, spam. I get to flag some
dammit, gone before i flagged

Tasty, tasty spam…

10:14 AM
Frankly, I'm hungry right now, and the actual, real spam wouldn't be too bad of a thing right now
But i'll settle for potato chips

… I actually use that service for throw-away e-mail addresses.

bookmarked
OK, I really want some chips right now

Hello :)

@cl-netbox Ahoy!

@DavidFoerster Hi David ! :) Nice to see you ! :)
@DavidFoerster wow - that's a lot ! :D
@DavidFoerster without alcohol ? hmmm ... not as good as with ! :D

10:30 AM
@cl-netbox Depends… I don't like to have a buzz when I want to Get Stuff Done™.
Also the non-alcoholic beers have become pretty good, i. e. close to the taste of their alcoholic counterparts, over the last decade.

@DavidFoerster true ... I remember when I tested some a few years ago they tasted really bad. :)
Rinzy ! :)

Boxy!
BBL Lunch :=)

10:57 AM
@Ravexina: Could you please not accept edit suggestions like this one that remove relevant information and commentary provided by the author? Thanks.

@terdon hi! Are you busy?

@DavidFoerster I couldn't get much out of the removed information. Tried to edit it though
the rest of the edit was good... it was a well-intentioned edit imho
not a duplicate, but EOL what should we do? I don't want to do nothing but what a chore to reopen and close again...

@Zanna: Yes, but we shouldn't accept edits that remove relevant information. The base option would be to amend the suggestion to re-add the lost information.
@Zanna I agree.

@DavidFoerster true. But when the syntax isn't known already then it's a separate thing imo. Anyway, I found another better link I think

I would "improve" in that case but I agree that "reject" is better than "approve"
hah I voted to leave closed then went to the post and voted to reopen it

11:19 AM
@DavidFoerster Got it, Sorry about that ;)

Grr, I hate when web sites, especially news articles, set their content font size relative to the screen size and I can't increase or decrease it with Ctrl+ or Ctrl-.
Just because I have a large screen doesn't mean I want huge fonts.
They should use font sizes relative to my preferred default font size or at least absolute physical font sizes (in cm/mm/pt/whatever).
Even absolute sizes in pixels would word better.

11:38 AM
2all: upvote ^^

askubuntu.com/questions/918289/… better enough to be reopened? @DavidFoerster @Zanna @Ravexina

We can blame Microsoft partially for that because it (used to?) ignore physical screen size and fixed the pixel density at 90 DPI.
@SumeetDeshmukh I already did.

@DavidFoerster thanks, I didn't wanted to be the only one to do it

I already voted to reopen that too. Didn't agree with closure in the first place personally

@Rinzwind thanks :-)
@SumeetDeshmukh done ;)

11:49 AM

@Zanna but it was clearly opinion based in my opinion @Ravexina bows!

Robert Cartaino on September 29, 2010

Stack Exchange is about questions with objective, factual answers. We’ve been crystal clear about this for as long as I can remember, even back to the earliest, pre-beta days of Stack Overflow. It’s right there in the standard Stack Exchange FAQ:

What kind of questions should I not ask here?

Avoid asking questions that are subjective, argumentative, or require extended discussion. This is not a discussion board, this is a place for questions that can be answered!

Thus, questions that are not answerable — discussions, debates, opinions — should be closed as subjective. It seems simple enough: Fact good; opinion and discussion bad. But why? …

@Anwar Kinda. What's up?

@Zanna where do you always find these links? good read btw (still reading)

@Zanna No. I wrote a comment asking for clarification (and then noticed the age of the question).

11:57 AM
me? have I become a person who knows where stuff is? hmm it must have rubbed off on me from others.
@DavidFoerster thanks! :D

12:25 PM
@Zanna that's all relative :=)

some people always know the stuff and have the links, like jokerdino

@Zanna that includes you and jokerdino because you said so :P

hahaha :) :)

@Zanna jokerdino uses google >:)

it's knowing what you're looking for that matters

12:34 PM
@Zanna well said

Easiest trick for google when you want to look for dupes:
"site:askubuntu.com {title of topic}"

yeah, google search is often far superior to AU's own search.

@SumeetDeshmukh :) thanks! soon you will be the one pointing everyone to all the things

askubuntu.com/questions/918444/… I think I also suffer from same issue. I should just add software updater to startup apps. || @Zanna memes mostly :P

@DavidFoerster often? always :X

12:40 PM
the internal search is indeed somewhat sugar honey iced ted - but I use both internal & external for different things

@Rinzwind Not always. Sometimes it's worthwhile to have vote counts and accepted answers shown in the search result list.

@SumeetDeshmukh hmmm... has it never appeared?

Google also omits the [on hold] and [duplicate] tags from the result list for longer question titles.

@Zanna Never

I have no idea how it works. But it does pop up for me occasionally even though I update every day or every other day
hmm it hasn't on this system actually

12:47 PM
Wtf, my university offers student employees their first wage increase in 11 years and it doesn't even cover the currency depreciation of that time frame. Not even close.

@Zanna add it to startup apps :)

During negotiations they made it clear that this is their best offer.

o.O

@SumeetDeshmukh I don't want it though! I find it annoying because I only use APT to update
this reminds me I need to set up apt-listchanges

12:49 PM
@SumeetDeshmukh That doesn't apply here though. Public universities don't require tuition in Germany.

I think I'm the only gui guy here
@DavidFoerster I'm just saying that Silicon Valley is cool.
@Zanna i think I'm the only gui person around here

However, studying is still expensive in cost of opportunity (and it shows in the correlation between parent income and likelihood to enrol in and graduate from college). This is where student employment comes into play.

@SumeetDeshmukh I doubt it... but we need more GUI people if so :) to write answers I mean

@DavidFoerster that shows more contrast in countries with huge population like India, only 2 percent of students get "internship" in my university!
@Zanna I'm converting few! I managed to convert a 10 year old! She was like "hmm menu is changed a little, where is paint?"
2
From Windows to Ubuntu, I mean

@SumeetDeshmukh Only a relatively small share of students are employed by the university at any moment here too, but they're good jobs because they have a contractual clause that permits time off from work whenever studies formally require the student's presence and because they usually have flexible hours at a fixed average wage (e. g. 10 h/week during lecture period and 30 h/week outside yet the monthly wage is averaged based on 20 h/week or so).

12:58 PM
@SumeetDeshmukh she can use Pinta :D
congrats on making converts, that's awesome

I converted my ex-girlfriend and my grandma (though only for her netbook).

@DavidFoerster Internship (at least in India) aren't suppose to get you a paying job! they (companies) mostly give some amount as reward at the end of internship (for 6 months) but the certificate of experience is all that matters here. it's a really bad time to be an engineer in India

@Zanna No, but I think this requires more info anyway because it could be multiple things.
@SumeetDeshmukh Internships do exist here too but there's a law that requires compensation once the intern performs any work that a paid employee or contractor would normally perform, i. e. anything productive. Unpaid internships are exclusively to learn stuff. It's not well enforced but the public sector adheres to it quite strictly.

@Zanna I think people who don't Need to use some software that is windows only, should't use Windows! I don't hate Windows but you're giving them money and watching movies on PC then that's gotta change IMHO. and privacy, oh god user privacy

I hate Windows :)
@DavidFoerster agreed

1:06 PM
@DavidFoerster laws in India are pretty much in favor on big cooperation (seriously). and thr are just too many unemployed people that you've to take the job on company's terms
@Zanna now that we're free about it, I hate Windows too
I mostly converted because of Privacy issues in Windows

I mostly converted because Linux leaves me much more freedom to have things the way I like them and because it has better software development tools and environments on average.
Privacy was a secondary concern.

@SumeetDeshmukh yeah :/

Privacy wasn't as bad in Windows when I converted anyway.

I'm trying to write an ESOL assessment report and I can't decipher my own IPA

@DavidFoerster my initial impression of Linux was way different, I converted because of Windows 10 privacy issues, and when I saw adds in File manager once. and I hated Ubuntu Unity when I installed it for the first time, But the customization pulled it together

1:11 PM

Who wants to talk all across the world anyways. :P

@Takkat I want to but they won't let me. ;-(

1:14 PM
Who knew that Windows 7 does not come with USB 3.0 drivers?
Took me almost an hour to find out.
I thought it was a glitch in VirtualBox.

@Takkat After all the updates and stuff !! this is insanity

So much are we used to get everything for free with Ubuntu.

@Takkat I would have guessed so since it was released before USB 3.0 specs were anywhere near their final draft.

yeah, but they do have "Service Packs"... and 8 hours of update orgies - sigh - XP didn't know anything about SATA, I should have known.
Oh and then this Window 7 CD I had would not install "because of missing CD drivers" - but that apparently was one of those genuine Windows errors.

1:40 PM
How can I create keyboard shortcuts for my nautilus scripts? || need help here, both of these answers seem to be outdated. I wanted to create a shortcut for a script,

@SumeetDeshmukh ldotf :D

What is that :O

@SumeetDeshmukh lays down on the floor = extremest version of bows ! :D

You mean like this?
