Does he have wget?

Hey guys is the default shell in ubuntu the gnome shell by any chance?

hope so. making an answer now >:)

He could manually download the dpkg package and use cp or whatever it is to manually install...

@Thijser no
@NathanOsman yeah on it

@Thijser Good heavens, no.
I'd move to Arch if that ever happened.

9:02 PM

@NathanOsman done :+)

You have moved him to arch?

if gnome shell becomes the default i will seriously consider moving away from ubuntu :P

What's wrong with it?

0
A: by mistake dpkg got removed

Nathan OsmanTo fix this, open a terminal and download the dpkg package: # For i386: wget http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/main/d/dpkg/dpkg_1.18.4ubuntu1_i386.deb # For amd64 wget http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/main/d/dpkg/dpkg_1.18.4ubuntu1_amd64.deb Extract the data.tar.gz file: ar x dpkg_1...

Also done >:)

9:14 PM
@NathanOsman nope you missed a "t"

Where?

me likes yours more
@NathanOsman before the "ar"

fixed it

ar is the command I meant!

sure :D
and why is there a . before /usr/bin?

9:15 PM
@Zanna I appreciate the edit, but that wasn't a typo.

@NathanOsman there's an ar o.O ?

Debian packages are not readable by tar.

aha
man ar
works :X
who knew :P
well Nathan did

@Rinzwind Because of how the archive is structured.

guess I can actually say I learned something today

9:17 PM
"tar -tvf data.tar.gz" will show you the structure of files in the archive.

TIL... in an embarrassing way that annoyed someone else haha

You can see that they start with "." so that is required when extracting them.
@Zanna Totally fine - I would have made the same mistake if I didn't know "ar" was a command.
It does look like a typo.
No harm done.

:)

only wasted time :=)

@NathanOsman sounds piratey

9:18 PM
@edwinksl lol

ar needs gh as paramters to make it work
ar -gh :D

Heh.

@NathanOsman yeah! exactly!

nathan is on a roll :P

@Seth I used dpaste.com with highlighting enabled.

9:20 PM
great, I will give it a shot. Thanks!

In Chrome, I selected just the code, went to print, and then clicked "Print with system dialog".
Then selected "print selection".
I made a PDF but it should be identical to what the printer churns out.

Are we still trying to print code?

Yes :D

May I suggest calligraphy course on the subject?
Seems like that's faster

ok bedtime. see you all tomorrow

9:22 PM
bye

Sleep is for the weak
o/

Well I'm also going to be week then
bye all

Good night!

9:43 PM
@Fabby I wish I could sleep for a week!

My boss is complaining that I'm not taking any PTO and that I'll burn out...
Tell your boss you need a week to just sleep or you'll burn out and he/she/it'll give you a week!
@Seth -----^

man, moving sucks, specially when you don't have a place to go and a deadline -.-

@Fabby hah, I wish.

@IanC too right! my sympathies :(

@IanC Do it like me: tell all your friends you need to store one box at their place; bring some food while you're at it, have a drink, stay for the night !no drinking while driving), rinse and repeat.

9:49 PM
Thanks @Zanna, the dude that rented the room for me simply told me he wanted to bring a friend to live here, so I have maybe 3 weeks, maybe a little more to find another place
@Fabby, that's a good idea hahaha

once you're out of the old flat, keep dropping by with food and drinks "to get something from the box"
Did that for a year before I found my own place. :-)
But then, I'm a great chef... OTOH, you might be a great drinker, which is also fun! :D

@IanC Best of luck

Depending on where you live: I've got 2 spare rooms...

@Fabby, I quit drinking, but I could start again in an emergency like this one! Sacrifices we do right? hahaha

Start cooking then! :D

9:52 PM
Just wish the rent in this city wasn't so overpriced

That's true all over the world in cities...

if I had more time it would actually be cheaper to finance a small flat (those of 20-25 m²) than to pay rent

"If you had more time?"
ShalI have you banned from chat for 24 hours???
plenty of time! :P

financing a flat is kind of a big decision, it's 30 years paying for it, so I'd have to look for a good one, good location, place to store my motorcycle, get the bank to do me the loan, then all the burocracy of the documentation, get an engineer to approve the building
but it would end all those headaches I've been having with renting places here

So do it, and have all your girl friends come in to help you choose the decoration....
Funnily enough when I did that last time, I invited the guys to come help me paint on Saturday and Sunday and their GFs to come help me choose the colours on FR-evening,
No one showed up on FR and 5 Girls showed up on SA and SU to come help paint.
(and they were impressed with my choice of colours)
o/

10:00 PM
I'll do it, just need a bit more time to get things ready, better take that decision without the clock ticking
what was your color choice btw? haha

@Fabby I'm so tempted to shout your (first) name in chat for some reason...

what program do you guys use to convert mp3 to ogg?
was looking for a straightforward solution, just like pdf2ps, CLI if possible
didn't want to download audacity just for that :p

@IanC ffmpeg is probably the easiest and fastest.
ffmpeg -i something.mp3 something.ogg
^--- should do the trick

I think it worked! Thanks @NathanOsman

No problem.

10:13 PM
nice to know you can use ffmpeg for audio conversion too :)

Yup.

by the way @NathanOsman , since you're experienced with web-dev, what should be my steps on learning it? I've been reading HTML/HTML5 and now CSS, plan on further reading JS and MySQL, at the same time trying to get apache working on a VM
and doing some website there, just for practicing

@IanC avconv
:D :D :D

Sounds good but I wouldn't focus too much on MySQL because (1) it is slowly declining in popularity and (2) most large scale web applications use an ORM.
Instead, pick a web scripting language like Go or Python (easier for beginners) and learn an ORM like SQLAlchemy or Django.
Django is highly recommended for beginners because it takes care of so many things out-of-the-box.
ORM, form validation, templates, routing, etc.

Go has been on my list of things to learn for what? 2 years now?

10:19 PM
It's a language I keep getting away from (because of other projects) but makes me keep coming back to it.

@NathanOsman Vista SP1 was rock solid!

cool, I'll look up for Django!

Well... Solid compared to other MS OSes

@Fabby Yeah, Vista wasn't as bad as everyone likes to joke it was.
But I had my fair share of problems with it.

indeed! Ran Vista for ... 7 years?
Before converting to Ubuntu...
Vista was my last personal MS OS.

10:21 PM
o_O

I went straight from Vista => 8, so about 4 years for me.

if you like Vista that much @Fabby, you'd never have left Windows after trying 7

I'm still on 7 (my laptop anyway) :D
Desktop has Windows 10. Meh.

Microsoft wanted 110 or 140€ for me to have an English version of Windows 7
instead of the French and Dutch versions that came preinstalled.
I never installed it, wiped the disk and installed Ubuntu.
Why did I install Ubuntu?

idk why did you install Ubuntu

10:23 PM
I googled "linux support" and Ubuntu came up in 50% of the first 10 links

lol

:)

I switched to Ubuntu around the days of 9.10 after becoming fed up once-and-for-all with Windows after it crashed for the last time.

I'm seeing more SUSE...

I said, "enough is enough!" and used Ubuntu.

10:24 PM
12.04

Oracle Linux!?!
Ruuuuun!

@NathanOsman it's just RHEL

Wow! Things have changed!

@Zacharee1 I learned a lesson - stay away from Oracle.
There's a reason we ship with LibreOffice and not OpenOffice...
...and why MySQL is dying...

10:26 PM
They used to have the best DB in the world.

...and Java.

what is that raisin?

Grapes! :D

@Fabby I guess I was asking for that one..

:-) Yes! ;-)

10:27 PM
EEEK
THE DOUBLE SMILEY
MORE TERRIFYING THAN SOLARIS

smiley and wink

@NathanOsman alright, maybe that is

I have no idea why... but that seemed appropriate.

oh it's not, but that's why it is

10:28 PM
I knew a guy who got a brand new Sun Sparc if he would please give his old Sun WS to the local importer!

huh?
grammar does not compute

He bought it in the US 10 years beforehand, carried it all the way to Belgium
then after 10 years when it was old and dirty (but still working)
he went to the local importer to buy a new one
and the importer was so impressed by the old clunker that he gave him a new one to be able to put the old one in a display case
@Zacharee1 what does not compute.
How would you phrase it then?

now I get it
"I knew a guy who got a brand new Sun Sparc for free because the importer wanted his old WS so badly"
something more like that

Just ran out of space on /var.
ಠ_ಠ

for X in $(find /fakevar -type f); do rm -f $X; done
:D

10:33 PM
@NathanOsman o.O
What were you doing???

@IanC Dude, don't pull a Terdon!
@Fabby Docker wasn't cleaning up old images.

:D

A quick clean up and all is well again.

@NathanOsman Bad Ubuntu! Bad!
@NathanOsman You must have used @IanC's command

@IanC Don't do that!
Delete please!

10:35 PM
@Fabby you mean rm it

There.
I nullified it >:)

aboooos

just substitute rm for echo "" > $X

It's harmless now.

user136984
@ThomasWard I'm just working with what pull-lp-source gnome-contacts trusty gave me. Those are all patches which were already there and clearly previously applied in a previous version, I hadn't even tried applying my own patches yet, well, I tried, but until these errors are fixed it won't let me move onto the patches that I'm actually meant to be applying.

10:36 PM
didn't mean to pull a Terdon :p
I actually forgot rm would crash stuff because the logging doesn't create the files (or do they?)

user136984
@ThomasWard And yes, I have just checked and I am sure that that file does exist.

Wait, that script wouldn't work anyway, would it? It has no sudo

user136984
My job is to backport in the upstream bugfix release 3.8.4. The current version is 3.8.3.

No curfew any more? ;-)

user136984
@Fabby: Curfew? Which curfew?

10:39 PM
I remember the time that you were supposed to be in bed before me!

user136984
I don't know why, but that always makes me think of Kefir.

Going to have a smoke, finish watching the movie and go to sleep!
Good night all!

user136984
@Fabby Ah! No, no more curfew! ;D

user136984
@Fabby I miss read that as "go fishing" at first! :D

user136984
@Fabby: Goodnight! :)

10:40 PM
Except @ParanoidPanda: he (still) gets a Pumpkin!

the dreaded triple ping, performed by @ParanoidPanda

(or should I drop that too now?)

user136984
God, I sound really excitable with all of those exclamation marks on the ends. :P

@Fabby gasp
@ParanoidPanda you're just being British :p

user136984
@Fabby: Nah, I like the Pumpkin! :D

10:41 PM
No he doesn't sound very British when he talks about Kefir.
close FF in 3...

user136984
It's Halloween soon too so I will turn into an evil night glowing Pumpkin too! ;D

1

Paranoid Pumpkin?

user136984

user136984

user136984
10:42 PM
@Zacharee1: :D

ah shoot.
My windows partition is hibernated and I need a file off of it.

@Seth PEW PEW
@Seth just ditch the hibernarnated session
(anyone remember that?)

um, there's a reason it is hibernated..

tsk
reboot then?

can't I come here and complain without someone getting all logic-y on me?!
:p

10:49 PM
@Seth we're nerds. You want us to be socially adept?

11:26 PM
Hey hey... what happens when I create a new tag? file-attributes
@Zacharee1 ^^^^ do you know?

it.. creates a new tag?

doesn't it go to a tag review committee?

nope

like do people vote on it to accept/reject?
oh
well I hope people don't start creating tags in french.... i'm lousy at that language.
I wanted to find out a file's last access time so I created the tag "file-attributes" was that the right thing to do?
