they even said please...

user136984
@jokerdino: Read what again?

... three times

"If person-y can't be quiet, we should make him."
Maybe if everyone is quiet, everyone else will also be quiet.

user136984
@Zanna: They are clearly getting desperate, but the account being there for a little longer isn't actively hurting them, they are choosing to go on and complain. Why are they doing that?

@ParanoidPanda because they are frustrated

user136984
1:03 PM
@Zanna: But why? They will soon get what they wanted, they just have to wait, it's not like it's actively damaging to have an account a little longer.

user136984
All they need to do now is not come on.

All you have to do is not visit that post...

^

user136984
@jokerdino: I guess so, but what if they keep posting?

24 hours...

user136984
1:04 PM
It's a lot of noise.

Much like what we are creating here?
I don't want to be silly, please.

user136984
Well, if they carry on posting after this then I'd think it easier to suspend them. If they can't stop themselves coming here and posting then maybe we should. But that's just a suggestion. Maybe they'll get the message now.

user136984
But I see you don't want me to carry on bring it up so I won't any more. :)

@ParanoidPanda did you go to VegFest?

user136984
@Zanna: Damn! I always manage to miss these things...

user136984
1:07 PM
Is there a way I can stay informed about their events?

\o

@ParanoidPanda yeah you can subscribe
here's the news site vegfestexpress.co.uk
I ate soooooo much
There's usually the Animal Aid Fair near Christmas? That one is pretty good too.

1:24 PM
What's a vegfest?

the End
:p
nah just kidding :P

@JourneymanGeek it's an organisation that runs vegan expo events in the UK, or such an event run by the organisation
giant expo with vegan-related stalls
all kinds of stuff - loads of food, everything has to be vegan, so it's a bit amazing for us, we can eat ANYTHING hahaha

It should be VeganFest instead of VegFest..

@jokerdino you better call them...

I am going to call them VeganFest from now on, yes.

1:37 PM
in Berlin someone got stabbed. he is in critical condition
now you ask ... is that a bad thing?

Usually

well he was dressed up as a horror clown and was scaring people

He must have done a really good job D:

oh now I'm laughing but I don't want to laugh...

side eyes Zanna.

1:40 PM
hides

@Rinzwind but really, poor guy.. :(

some people ask for it :P

nobody asks for that I think

when you start waving a gun/knife you should expect to get shot/stabbed yourself

:(

1:51 PM
The stabber gave 1st aid to the stabbee <3

who was waving a gun/knife around?

The stabbee

@jokerdino its a valid english word! :=)
@TheXed the stabber :=)

Sadly both are still kids... 16 (clown) and 14 (stabber)

yeah
well what happend in AUS is more desturbing :(

1:59 PM
there are much too many shops selling horror clown masks for Halloween.

I hate halloween
5

even my kids hate it now :)

@Zanna me too

heh glad it's not just me :)

2009 I had to go from NYC to Boston for a seminar. We landed on Halloween eve. ALL the security there was angry (the plane was 1/2 hour late so they had to stay 1/2 longer) D:

2:06 PM
Guess they all had their security costumes already on :)

takky! :=_
at NYC customs there was a family from Pakistan (man, woman and little girl)
Dad got told to come over to the customs dude. Little girl follows him........
Customs dude went ballistic _O- Girl cried :D
and she was ordered to stay behind a fictious line
and this repeated when the woman was called _O-
It did not help that both the woman and girl did not speak any english
So the custom dude had to call the man back to translate D:::
That really helped that custom dude to get cheerful :X

?

@Zanna You will always get a crowd for hating things..

2:21 PM
:(

lol

Hello ! :)

hi

@TheXed Hi ! :)

@cl-netbox are you spam?

2:32 PM
@TheXed spam ? what do you mean ?

Planning to migrate nameservers, anybody got a 'things to rember when' list for me?

@cl-netbox just standard line of questioning...answer it please.
@blade19899: 1: Don't mess it up.

@TheXed still don't get what you mean ... but no : I am NOT spam ! :)

@TheXed Haven't thought of that one! Thanks! :P

@cl-netbox good to hear, you may commence with regular conversation now.
@blade19899 I try to be helpful when I can.

Q: Installing Windows 8 to a portable hard drive

spaceface777I have an external hard drive and I would like to install Windows 8 on it. I have extracted the files in the install.wim file with 7zip, which contains the entire system, but I have no way to make it bootable. I know that on Windows you have to usebcdboot.exe, but I don't know if you can do this ...

@TheXed You most certainly are.

user136984
2:50 PM
Anyone here know how to make a deb file?

user136984
It's just it's been a while and I normally only make debdiffs.

Hey @ParanoidPanda - nice to see you ! :)

user136984
I'm sure there were one or two simple commands but I just don't remember what they were...

user136984
@cl-netbox: You too! I didn't notice you in here! :D

user136984
Probably because I was not looking at the people in room list.

2:51 PM
@ParanoidPanda How are you doing ? Do you like 16.10 ?

user136984
@cl-netbox: Yeah, it's fine, GNOME's a bit buggy, but it's fine.

user136984
How are you? :)

@ParanoidPanda I'm fine and I like it too : great performance and not many bugs ! I switched from 16.04 to 16.10 on all machines in the meantime ... :)

user136984
@cl-netbox: Good someone's performance has gone up! Mine has actually gone down! :D

user136984
But I think that's because GNOME 3.22 (or maybe it's something else) uses more CPU because my machine keeps overheating and I never got round to fixing the fan...

2:56 PM
@ParanoidPanda How comes ? Even my wife's old lappy runs faster now ... :)

user136984
I should really do that quite soon...

user136984
I think if my fan were in working order things would be much faster.

user136984
But my system slows down on purpose when it starts to overheat.

So my pi 3 is on its way, anything that I should know about it before it gets here?

So, 16.10 is faster that 16.04?

2:57 PM
@TheXed Don't spam it ! :D :D :D

user136984
@Anwar: Well, not in my case, but in the case of others, yes. :P

@cl-netbox spam what?

user136984
Apparently so anyway. My machine is quite old and doesn't seem to like the new kernel either.

@Anwar Yes indeed - must be some improvements under the hood. :)

That sounds interesting! I don't like 16.04 much.

2:58 PM
@Anwar Yes, you should give it a try ! :)

But on the other hand, don't want to upgrade after 9 months :(
@cl-netbox will do once I get a chance

@Anwar Don't upgrade - I always perform clean installs ... system installation takes 5 minutes ... setting everything up and configuration takes about 1 or 2 hours ... that's not much, isn't it ? :)

I never upgrade

@Anwar what version are you on?

I meant I don't want to switch after 9 months
@TheXed 16.04

3:02 PM
Oh so you stick with LTS?

@TheXed just a little joke ... remember -> chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/33119378#33119378 ? :D

@cl-netbox oh yes of course...

I don't want to stick with LTS. but then I hate upgrading/new installations each 9 months

I only use LTS on servers...

@Anwar If you plan everything properly, it's not much of a pain ! :D

3:05 PM
I can handle the pain. but all those customizations will be lost.
I need good reasons to upgrade. 16.10 seems to have some

C/start

Is anyone around here who makes debdiffs?

user136984
I just need to know if I should put xenial or xenial-proposed in the changelog for an SRU.

I made debs. but not debdiffs

user136984
@ThomasWard: You around?

3:40 PM
hmm...power company pulls up to my house...then server goes down...
coincidence?
lol did my wife not pay the power bill this month?

honestly speaking... i don't know :P
What's your favorite graphical gitter?

I'm making a debdiff for an SRU.

3:54 PM
or the internet is down...how do I determine that?

@ParanoidPanda either works

user136984
@ThomasWard: Ok, I've put it as xenial then. :)

user136984
Thanks! :)

Yep

yup power is out...
hope they didn't break my rpi's
Cause of outage: ? MAINTENANCE/REPAIR they couldn't tell us ahead of time?
maybe they are installing a smart meter...

user136984
4:02 PM
@ThomasWard: Any chance you could try to help me out in tracking down a patch? Because I've been looking for quite some time and I just can't seem to find the right one. I think there might be several actually, but only the largest change is listed here. My job is to basically backport in the 3.8.4 version of gnome-contacts. The current version being 3.8.3. :)

user136984
The only patch that I can seemingly find is a translation one which is not what I'm looking for.

user136984
Wait, are they the patches in Summary section?

user136984

hi. can a DVD detect somehow the OS it is run in ? I have the DVD of the game BrokenAge and I see no BrokenAgesetp.exe like said in the instructions. only the linux executable which is strange

5:06 PM
@solsTiCe no.
an installer started on the dvd can. the dvd itself can not

Rinzy ! Hi :)

boxy! :)
I need to find 1 more q to a :P

I'm sure you will find it ... :D

having a hard time :

why ? what's wrong ?

5:09 PM
frontpage does not have a good q

yes - this is more and more the case

@ParanoidPanda could be any of five hundred things
E: No Useful Data
@ParanoidPanda there may also not be one inclusive patch
and instead a collection of commits
in which case you have to create the patch using a diff betweedn 3.8.3 and 3.8.4

@Rinzwind it says on it "Hybrid DVD" and PC MAc Linux

@solsTiCe does not matter ;-) a dvd in itself can not hide things

5:28 PM
o/

@NathanOsman \o

@Rinzwind yes I know that. but how are the .exe for windows and the .app for mac then. That's why i am wondering and asking those question

@solsTiCe Well, if the DVD had multiple sessions, information could be hidden in another session.
This is why you don't see the Mac files when you insert the disc on a Windows PC.
Also... (although I doubt this is the case) Windows will show files that start with "." but Linux will not (by default).
- that's a new one.

user136984
5:56 PM
@ThomasWard No, it's fine, I found the patches (linked from the commits in the Summary tab). The problem I have now is that Quilt does not agree with the patches which are currently in debian/patches (the ones that were already applied, not by me). It says that it can't find the files they references. So I'm not too sure what to do about that. Do I remove them? But won't that break the functionality they added?

@ParanoidPanda quilt import -p1 ?
(-p1 strips some dirs from the start of the path, etc.)

@NathanOsman you can still see the files but need to mount that part of the disk :P

user136984
@ThomasWard: No, it still gives errors like:

user136984
Applying patch ../patches/0001_dont_crash_on_timeout.patch
can't find file to patch at input line 20
Perhaps you used the wrong -p or --strip option?
The text leading up to this was:

user136984
And it complains about all the 3 patches which were already there when I pull-lp-sourceed them.

6:01 PM
@ParanoidPanda that doesn't look like a patch
@ParanoidPanda i think i need a copy of your working dir to stab it
you're sure the file still exists?
src/contacts-esd-setup.c ?

Q: How to create directories containing index.html with wget --recursive?

Ionică BizăuI'm pretty happy how wget -r works and downloads the things. ^ Any ideas here?

yay manual question:
@IonicăBizău \o

@Rinzwind I was searching for a solution for hours now... lol

@Rinzwind Can Ubuntu read the Mac session on the disc?

@NathanOsman I would assume mounting it should be enough? :-P unless there is encrypted/drm
@IonicăBizău no idea >:=)

6:08 PM
@Rinzwind Dunno - never tried.
:P

@NathanOsman that's a + for you then >:-D

I've never had a Mac with an optical drive, so it's never been a problem.

I got a couple of DBF files the other day. someone wanted us to extract and import the data.
I gave them to a windows user and told him to do that >:)
I could not be bothered :DDD

6:38 PM
Yo.

Oy

7:36 PM
Hey guys
What do you think I should do with my bounty, someone new to this site posted the answer to my question in a meta site but I cannot really award it there (could a mod do this?)

@Thijser you can only award your bounty to an answer to the original question.
Moderators have no ability to award a bounty at all.

Problem is that the user made a post on the meta site explaining that he wanted to leave a comment but that comment contained the answer

(Except on their own questions, of course.)

Q: Running caffe gives error Check failed: error == cudaSuccess (30 vs. 0) unknown error

ThijserI'm trying to get caffe to run such that I can use it via python. To do this I have followed this tutorial. I'm on Ubuntu 16.04. When I get to make runtest I get the error : $ make runtest CXX/LD -o .build_release/test/test_all.testbin src/caffe/test/test_caffe_main.cpp .build_release/src/caff...

We can ask a mod.

@Seth, @terdon, @Mitch, @jokerdino ---^
Basically instead of answering the question, the user posted a comment on Meta.
And the OP wants to award the bounty to the comment-that-should-be-an-answer.

Well he asked a question on meta saying that he wanted to place a comment but I was on chat at the time so I read this comment there
cool i got an extra flag
Oh and what do you think is this more of a stackoverflow, super user or ask ubuntu question: I'm trying to get caffe (a framework for machine learning) working on my machine however it's giving me a *** SIGSEGV (@0x3038) received by PID 8354 (TID 0x7efe8c938180) from PID 12344;0x7efe8391f3d0 (unknown)
@ 0x7efe83917d84 __GI___pthread_mutex_lock error

7:54 PM
extra flag?

I can now flag 11 posts per day rather then 10
guess I have been good
But anway what do you guys think, my issue could be configuration, code or drivers (again)

@AndroidDev Or not.
stealth strikes are fun, are they not? :)

@ThomasWard Eh? I just made it inline because I remembered you asked me to last time.

Is mint offtopic here? (I always have the feeling mint is very similar to ubuntu)

8:04 PM
was about the 'VTCs needed" part. Diamond-powered close vote.
@Thijser yes read the help center
@Thijser Mint is not an official variant of Ubuntu and not supported
always been that way

alright then

Maybe we can migrate it?

@ThomasWard Ah, I get it now :)

> Questions that you should avoid:
> - Linux Mint, Elementary OS, Backtrack, Gnome-Remix (prior to 13.04) and other Linux distributions (try our friends at Unix & Linux Stack Exchange).

8:05 PM
Fair enough
By the way @ThomasWard could you help me with my bounty?

@Thijser Maybe, but the idea is we don't migrate "crap"; my view is that there's not enough useful data in the question to actually get them any help, here or at U&L, so it's not of a high enough quality to migrate
unless @terdon says U&L wants it.
@Thijser "help with"?

user veranedi posted the answer to my question on the meta forum with a link back to my question but I cannot award a bounty that way

@ThomasWard - What do you call that thing that comes up when you aski a question with the wireless tag?

@Thijser Can't help unless they post an answer.

ok you cannot migrate a question or comment into a answer?

8:08 PM
@Thijser They don't give an answer on the Meta post. And comments can't be converted to questions.
and I can't migrate Meta answers to Main either, if I remember right

what's the policy here should I just post the answer myself (denying the new user the posibility of the bounty?) leave the question answered in the comment with a link or what?

so, unless they post an answer on your actual question nothing I can do
@Thijser if the user posts an answer you can still award them the bounty
provided the bounty hasn't expired

yhea that's going to be a problem

@AndroidDev "that thing"?
@AndroidDev "that thing" could mean any of five hundred things, specifics are useful.

@ThomasWard The tag warning

8:12 PM
@Thijser oh yeah (sorry I was just booting a live session to check something), congrats on the new flag haha :)

\o

@Zanna thanks, good luck with the live session

@AndroidDev it's literally called a Tag Warning heh. meta.askubuntu.com/questions/14270/…

@Thijser found what I wanted and back in my install already :)

good, what was it you were looking for?

8:14 PM
How do you put a tag in the body of a post so it looks like a tag?

you can just do [tag:thing]

^--- this

same as here in only they look better in posts

Docker is doing its best to put wear and tear on my SSD.

Docker + SSD = death
Docker has a ton of I/O

Q: Mint "tag warning" proposal

Android DevI propose that we create a "tag warning" for mint, because it seems like we are getting a lot of OT questions about Mint. Now you say, this is a dupe! Well yes, sorta, but nothing came out of it. Sooooo.... can we please look at this again?

8:34 PM
So this is going to be my next step in my epic saga to get caffe working on my machine

Q: __GI___pthread_mutex_lock error in opencv/caffe

Do you guys think it will fit here?

@NathanOsman any recommendations for printing code?

Literally printing it out?

yeah

Don't ?

@Seth black magic.

8:37 PM
I have to make a portfolio for a prior learning exception and it needs to be tangible.

First tip: stay away from Courier.

or not doing it.

Or put a link to github on the front and use 4pts?

Ubuntu Mono is a nice font.
Can you print in color?
(Syntax highlighting?)

yeah, I've got the font down
but IDEs don't exactly support printing well

8:38 PM
The only other thing I can think of is to make sure it stands out from the rest of the content.

if at all

Is there really a chance someone is going to look at the code itself?

Be sure it has a very, very light gray background.
Oh, you're printing just code.

yeah, sorry that wasn't clear.

Let me try something, hang on...

8:39 PM
@Thijser yep..

O_o
Sublime doesn't even do printing.

What kind of insane manic looks at printed code?

probably not too in depth but it needs to be there.

And neither does Atom...

@NathanOsman hence the question.. :/

8:40 PM
In that case... pastebin and browser are probably the easiest.
Let's see what I can come up with...

when I google it all I get is documentation for print functions.. xD
@NathanOsman Oh that's a good idea!

@Seth Something like that? ---^

I usually just take latex and put a code listing tag around it

That's a good idea as well.
Although that requires the LaTeX packages to be installed.

Of course but that's manageable

yay 200 <3 just in time

@edwinksl I thought I was having deja vu
@Rinzwind haha that last one was from me I think

@Zanna :D
always you

haha :D

@Zanna lol same i had to double check

@NathanOsman 1x200 :=)

@edwinksl handled.

8:54 PM
he is on 142/150 and I am on 141/150 :=)

@Rinzwind So you need his streak to end to get ahead of him.

he's been on 142 for ages >:-D

Quick, I'll tie him down and you answer some questions!
j/k, of course.

@ThomasWard thanks!

@Rinzwind Oh, it's not consecutive?

8:55 PM
cant answer anything today >:-D

Never mind then.

@NathanOsman naah

Carry on :P

its the amount of timesyou reach 200+
