@lewis4u the people wanting to hire are giving job offers
Those who want to take the offer will bid on the offer.
See definition 3 here: dictionary.com/browse/bid

ok but...first comes this demand/request and then comes an offer
on our website will be like this we have an event and need 2 cooks and 2 helpers....and that is a request...and then you come and see and you have those people working for you and you will make an offer for some money
and say you will rent those 2 cooks and helpers for 200$ and you make that offer
and the question is on what did you make that offer

@lewis4u That's what I mean. The "request" is actually an offer. It's a job offer and the replies can be called bids: "I will do this for $10"

on a request or is there some other better word

@lewis4u You made the bid on the offer

ok you are kind'a right....it's hard to translate from german

10:29 AM
Alternatively, you can call the responses quotes. When you want someone to do a job for you and you ask how much it would cost, you are asking them to give you a quote.

anfrage->angebot
yes...true

Although, if your database is listing job offers, I don't see why you don't just call it jobs. Then you would have jobs and offers*/*bids*/*quotes or whatever.

because the endusers are normal people like physical people who want personnel and the agencies are actually the ones who make these offers

So?
These are physical people who want to hire someone for a job, right?

no

10:33 AM
?

not someone....
they want to hire an agency
one agency

@lewis4u Yes, an agency is someone.
But that makes no difference.

maybe
i'm still struggling with translations and DB relationships

Your users want to hire someone (a person, an agency, a dog, whatever) to do a job. So they're offering jobs. The people who respond (agencies, humans, dogs or whatever) are making offers / bids /providing quotes for that job.

but it's kind'a wrong to call this a job...it's more like an event for multiple different jobs
there are more things involved....more than 20 form fields
=> 20 different table columns

10:38 AM
OK. 1) If you ask for help, you need to explain the whole situation. We can't read your mind. 2) You are seriously overthinking this. The db name is only ever going to be seen by developers, you just need a name that makes it clear to people who already know about the system what the system is. 3) A job can be simple or incredibly complex. For example, being the head of a government involves thousands of different things. It's still a job.

would this work: vacancies - applications ???

Hey! A German! :)
@Takkat I don't think so. As far as I can understand, @lewis4u is setting up some sort of freelancer thing. So there aren't any vacancies, as such, only jobs.

Then jobs - applications

yes you are 100% right terdon unfortunatelly i can't give all info...this is from work....it's very hard to help with not enough info

By the way, this really isn't the best place for this sort of discussion. You might want to ask here instead:

Q: Asus Notebook vs Linux

Caranfil AlegzandruI recently aquired an Asus F550VX-DM103D and it was deliverd with Free Dos. Windows 10 worked like a charm, not a single problem. On the other hand, when i tried to install Ubuntu (or linux mint, centos, RHEL, etc) it didn't worked at all.. It started freezing, not rebooting, not booting, problem...

@terdon Just wanted to know if that was helpful. Since I cannot say anything on the topic.

he wanted my opinion :P @terdon @Takkat ^^

last line :O

@Rinzwind same - you may be considered rude. Say that the problems are out of reach for Ubuntu or sth.
We all know that there is hardware people not meant to play nice with Linux.

1:25 PM
Can I change KDE font settings from terminal?

Oli
@Anwar ~/.kde/share/config/kdeglobals
Maybe. That might be KDE4 not 5 :\.

Thanks. That means, I need to change the text file. No tools like gsettings or dconf?

1:40 PM
I was reading about tmux. It says " it enables a number of terminals to be created, accessed, and controlled from a single screen". Doesn't many other terminal support this same thing? Also what is meant by 'screen' here?

@Anwar Fair enough, I thought you wanted to do it.

I would do, but I was unsure

@Anwar No, it lets you connect to a remote machine and open multiple shell sessions within the same terminal emulator. You can then log out of the machine and the remote sessions keep running, so you can reconnect to them next time you connect to the machine.
And "screen" here is GNU screen
An older tmux:
GNU Screen is a terminal multiplexer, a software application that can be used to multiplex several virtual consoles, allowing a user to access multiple separate login sessions inside a single terminal window, or detach and reattach sessions from a terminal. It is useful for dealing with multiple programs from a command line interface, and for separating programs from the session of the Unix shell that started the program, particularly so a remote process continues running even when the user is disconnected. Released under the terms of version 3 or later of the GNU General Public License, GNU Screen...

Oh. That's interesting. Thank you.
But Wiki says, tmux is newer? (or did I misread it?)

@Anwar Oh, yes, sorry, my bad. Tmux is the more modern one.

1:54 PM
got it. Terminal there refers to the usual terminal we use, right? or VT ones?

2:05 PM
@Anwar Well, it means the older meaning. Basically, s/terminal/shell session/

A: What is the exact difference between a 'terminal', a 'shell', a 'tty' and a 'console'?

GillesA terminal is at the end of an electric wire, a shell is the home of a turtle, tty is a strange abbreviation and a console is a kind of cabinet. Well, etymologically speaking, anyway. In unix terminology, the short answer is that terminal = tty = text input/output environment console = physic...

oh. was thinking same

@AndroidDev I'm on it as suggested!

Hi.

2:36 PM
my mother just called. "Ubuntu has an internal error" :P
if I can fix it :=D
@terdon google broke down?
wtf 769 upvotes :X

@Rinzwind ?

@terdon typical google q ;-)

Oh, not really. That's a great explanation with a lot of detail. I doubt you can find one as good on Google. Not explaining all of tty, console, virtual console, terminal, shell, virtual terminal, terminal emulator etc.

files in /var/log/ are empty. No sub directories are affected. Any suggestions?

@Rinzwind good luck

2:51 PM
@blade19899 suggestions on what? >:)
you want them to start logging?
want to know why they are empty?
@terdon it is hard to beat wikipedia on stuff like that :P
nothing wrong with that blue flag :=)

what was that about?

@blade19899 Was the relevant log archived and a new log started? For instance, if /var/log/syslog is empty, check in /var/log/syslog.1

Wait, got it!

lol
@blade19899 you should start writing suspense novels >:)

@Rinzwind did you get that computer fixedd?

😁 Happy birthday all. Today Ubuntu turned 12
@TheXed at work so no ;)

This is what happens usually. I click on a question (thinking this will be my last question, I'll go to work after that..). Oh! I can answer it...go for it...stuck..google it..found the answer...continue writing...hmmm, this needs some good explanation...google...found some nice tools + 2 more essential looked articles to read, quickly grasp some gist from 1... finish the answer.
1 hour gone :(

@Rinzwind oh me too...

3:30 PM
@Anwar so generous with your time

not sure if it is good or bad for me.

idk but it's definitely good for AU, so, thank you!

can someone try installing gksu please?

@Zanna I'd agree. but ...

sudo apt install gksu incase you are to lazy to type it yourself.

3:35 PM
@TheXed What's with it?

@TheXed It installs for me.

Okay @chili555 that is all I needed to know. Thanks
I am not on Ubuntu right now So I can't check myself.

Glad to help.

@Anwar I understand the problem... AU is eating all my time as well... but I have decided I want to give my time to it at the moment, so it's OK for me!

ah. that's nice.
@TheXed It is installed here already :)
16.04. I might have installed it

3:37 PM
Hey @Rinzwind do you have a minute of time? I am trying to convert JSON to CSV in Python and getting an error. Hope you can give me a hint. Here is the data pastebin.com/raw/Djs7vCy7

I wonder what is for lunch...

@Anwar It might speed things up if you could get rid of that "going to work" thingy. It sure did for me.

@chili555 ah. Thanks. Need to figure out a way to get rid of that. :)

Can someone tell me what sudo -H gedit does?
I really wish I had access to a Ubuntu computer

  -H, --set-home set HOME variable to target user's home dir

3:42 PM
@Anwar what does that mean?

That means without it, all applications from that command will use settings from root account
One change I saw is, the looks are different for gedit. One uses default settings and -H uses my own settings

So if one ran the command sudo -H gedit, could they edit system configuration files?

apparently this needs an update? askubuntu.com/questions/17610/…
It may be... but the answer doesn't work, due to the flag needed being depreciated :/ — INeedHelpA 8 mins ago

@TheXed running with sudo will give the power so I can edit all files. But without -H, i think any change you make in users settings will be stored as roots changed settings

@Anwar I see..

Q: upgrade from 14.04 to 16.04 shows failure kernel load errors

Ken SandovalI hit upgrade, then I waited for packages to be downloaded. I had to go to slep then I found this message, but, I was doing some reasearch and someone said this https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2318779&p=13466943#post13466943 solution works. I have not tried it since I had to go to work,...

Hi
here is my issue
any advice on how to start troubleshooting?

I found a nice tool. debtree
but that has a bug :(

I actually had 14.04 installed, and I daily was receiving the little message of "your software is up to date but you are still using 14.04. you can upgrade to 16.06. " and there were two buttons. Upgrade an OK. So, I decided the night I started the thread to begin upgrade. I had made backups of everything anyway, like videos and personal pictures on Amazon Cloud Drive, so I am not really worried about data loss. If I have to start from scratch I will do it, however,
it is funny because now the computer when I boot up, and press ctrl atl F2, I get the message saying "Welcome to Ubuntu 16.06"
When I am in terminal mode, I to lsd_release and it says 16.04
I go on my home directory and I can see all my fidercorites and everything is there (whitch is a good thing. everything is fine.
I do sudo dpkg --configure -a and it works, then I do sudo apt-get dist upgrade, and it workds, then I do sudo apt/get -f install
and all that works,
then I do sudo shutdown to restart or just shutdown and it returns a black screen that says "no boot option" press f1 to retry, press f2 to start diagnostics press f5 to set up whatever...
I am a little sad honestly, but possibly tomorrow that I am off, I am going to have to go purchase a couple of dvd empty discs to burn a 16.04 ISO an use it to boot from it, do you think it will work without loosing all my data? or it will?
as clarification, I have said before that I backed up personal files on Amazon cloud drive, but, all my study files, pdf books, Cisco networking, Linux PDF files, web

@KenSandoval if you want to ask a question, please do so on Ask Ubuntu and not in chat.
Ah, sorry, I see you've already done so.
OK, please add all this extra info you gave here into your question though.

Q: Are votes more dramatic on Meta?

David Cole - Grammar PoliceJust a simple question and discussion, no complaining, just asking. From what you (as an AU user) have seen, do you feel that votes are more dramaticized on Meta? For example I see multiple questions with 10+ votes on the homepage, but on AU.. not so much, and if they are, they are oldies. Does a...

Cool, what was the occasion...

Well, my parents just wanted to do that and brought me :/

@ByteCommander yeah, don't tell anyone, but it's basically in maintenance mode right now.
I don't have the time to maintain it.
And with multi-process Firefox on its way, I doubt things will get better.

@NathanOsman Hey!
Sad to hear that, would have been cool to use it.
@SmokeDetector already deleted
Seems like that was the same physical user with two accounts.
Had the same Gravatar, so probably same email address.
Also same or similar spam content.

Does AU allow to create two accounts with same email address?

It should not...
When I tried that once around a year ago, it didn't let me.
But the default autogenerated icon is the same, and IIRC that one is based on the hashed email address.

6:24 PM
it says unregistered for both users
may be there is a default icon for unregistered users

Maybe they hash something else like IP or some browser fingerprint data instead of the email for anonymous users...

maybe

can somebody search through my answers on desktop plz ?
i am on mobile

@Anwar err - wrong question.

sadly my answer there wasn't accepted. i found 5 ways, and OP didn't look carefully enough at my answer. He said it doesn't include the command in output, which it actually does

6:49 PM
oh. I wasn't aware of those answers.

Mine has only +4, more appreciation would have been preferable as well.

So that's how doing the @terdon feels.

@ByteCommander I read your comment, and no where did you say anything like that.

I know, but OP seemingly doesn't...

We can hope that reinstalling solves their issue.
