@ByteCommander Right, installing the latest drivers is not an option for me as they cause absolute disaster on my machine. Is there not another solution or a package to report this under?

Huh? Why?

@Mateo just trying to sell my car...

Ah, probally was on lunch and pulled up the webpage @TheXed ...

user136984
@ByteCommander: Are you replying to me or someone else?

@Mateo what webpage?

user136984
9:01 PM
:D

this one?

me?
I am confused...

no my lunch was around 10, when you pinged me when i was not here ;)

@ParanoidPanda Only you, my dear :)
WiFi is buggy again...

@Mateo oh, I don't remember pinging you, did I need something?

9:04 PM
you just said my name with a !

user136984
@ByteCommander: Right, what were you asking why about? Why is was a disaster or something else?

user136984
It's a disaster because just everything is really jumpy and all the graphics are really bad.

i think I'll pursue scripts badge
I'm close on silver

user136984
Do I need the missing firmware because I didn't need it previously with the 4.4 kernel.

also this is landing, it is awesome:

user136984
9:07 PM
What would it be anyway? Is it like just a graphics driver thing or something?

Yay, "new window" button

@ParanoidPanda Those warnings were there for me with 4.4 on 16.04 already.
Are you sure installing them makes your graphics worse?
what CPU and GPU/graphics cards do you have?
If you have an Intel Skylake CPU (with integrated Intel HD graphics) or older, you can ignore the warnings.

@terdon what do you think of my answer askubuntu.com/a/839826/295286 Do i handle error checking close to what OP wants ?

Windows blew up my processor...

@ParanoidPanda Your warnings are only about Kabylake and Broxton firmware. If you don't have one of those chip families, you can ignore the warnings.
Fun fact: One of the next Intel CPU generations will have the code name Coffee Lake

user136984
9:17 PM
@ByteCommander: I'm certain, I've installed them twice already and my graphics almost completely broke.

@Mateo oh yeah I remember now...
I was just clowning around...

user136984
How do I check about the firmware you mentioned?

So what HW do you have?
inxi -G

@ByteCommander better then skylake?

what?

9:18 PM
What are they going to code name 17.10? Alpha Alphabet?

I suggested Arty Antelope.

@ByteCommander I was referring to your comment about coffee lake...

Well, who knows?
Only time will tell.

@ByteCommander Oh I think it should be "Absolute Awesomeness"

Would that make 18.04 then "Best 'buntu"?

9:22 PM
@Terrance I like it...

user136984
@ByteCommander:

user136984

user136984
@ByteCommander: So? :)

You can unvote votes?

user136984
@TheXed: Yes

9:24 PM
How long have you been able to do that?

user136984
Depends what kind of votes you mean, I'm not sure if we were always able to retract close votes, but maybe we were.

Just click which ever one you clicked on whether it be up or down and it will unvote

oh I meant like upvotes...

user136984
Yes, you can unupvote a post within a certain time period after you cast it, though that time period is reset if the post is edited.

user136984
I think it's something like 5-10 minutes.

user136984
9:26 PM
Not sure exactly.

Dang! Just got a new laptop for work and it is synchronizing my Outlook profile at 1.38GB. Ooops! Maybe I should empty it once in a while. :P

@Terrance what kind of laptop?

Dell Ultrabook
E7470

@Terrance I was thinking about buying a surface pro 4

@ParanoidPanda That's an old Sandybridge, you can safely ignore all those missing module warnings.
Yours should have working firmware modules already well integrated into the kernel.

9:28 PM
@TheXed I wouldn't mind one of those for work. I got one of these because of the dock I have already works with it and all my monitors. :D

@Terrance or build a desktop...I can't decide...
@Terrance where do you work?
or what do you do for work?

@TheXed My home system is a custom build. When I am paying for the system always custom build! :D
@TheXed I am a data center tech

@Terrance I built the desktop I am using now...but it is getting really old...
like 8 years old...
I keep upgrading parts and stuff...
but the Mobo is starting to show its age...

Mine's ancient at home, but it works for what I want it to do.

One sata port died, and one USB port died...

user136984
9:30 PM
@ByteCommander Ok, that's good! :)

stuff like that...
but I would also like something I can sit with on the couch

I hear ya

other then my work computer...

Oh, its Ubuntu's 12th birthday today?!?

@Edity yes...that is what I have heard...
Anyone have experience building Chrome Extensions?

9:35 PM
nope

Still trying to decide if I like the Canonical-Livepatch yet.
I don't understand how the thing is supposed to work.

@Terrance update your kernel without rebooting...
awesome for servers...

Maybe I just need to be more patient then. It seemed like it wasn't working when an update was available. I updated manually, then it said error. And now it says it is all good again.
I will wait on the next update

Oh, great! A new ToS for a service that I'm using..

Oh I don't know how it actually performs I have never used it...I just think it would be amazing for servers...in the server environment...

9:43 PM
Time to scroll through 100 pages of just plain gibberish about the site..

So what kind of stuff do you do at work @Terrance?

@Edity Who ever reads Tos?

me?

Also me.

@TheXed I image servers, install OSes, make sure they are ready for the cloud. Decommission servers, scrub servers, open to vendors for repairs, etc.

9:44 PM
I have a weird addiction to reading through terms of service stuff... (AND NO, NOT JUST SCROLLING FAST)

I have to read them because they often have restrictions on commercial usage.

@Terrance I see...well today I plugged in an Ethernet cord...pretty productive for 8 hours of work :-P

that was short O_o

@TheXed Very nice!! :D

it was about collecting info and using them under law's XD

9:45 PM
@TheXed I used to do Rack and Stack of servers with cable management here as well.

@Terrance oh, and I handed someone a Chromebook...

That reminds me

@TheXed Awesome! :D

Drove about 20 miles from one site to another...

One of my chromebooks failed to start 2 days ago

9:46 PM
@Edity how come?

The filesystem was tampered

Installing Linux on it?

nope
I did nothing and the next day
poof

@Terrance honestly though my days are usually so busy running around that I can't keep up...it's days like this that make the others worth while...

9:48 PM
I used to travel between data centers when I was the Degauss Tech Lead.

@Edity did you try the recovery stick?

yes
I got it working again

@Edity how so?

@TheXed I hear ya on busy days. Right now I am looking at my queue with 84 tickets in it for servers that need some sort of attention. :)

@TheXed The recovery stick O_o

9:49 PM
@Edity oh so that did work...
@Edity I have had a few chromebooks that wouldn't even work with that...

LOL

and had to send them back for warranty...
@Terrance I am actually caught up on my help tickets...
first time since the school year has started...

@TheXed I wish that I was, but this is good for OT. :D

@Terrance I got banned from overtime after 72 hours in 2 weeks...

@TheXed OOps

9:51 PM
So I was like maybe you should hire me some help...
so now I have neither...
Things get done, but it takes longer...

Uh oh

It was actually a good thing that I got banned, because I have the type of personality that I don't know when to quit...
but now I have to...

You got banned?!?

People ask me to fix their computers 5 mins before I go home I am like "sorry, can't have any more OT"

@ByteCommander Ha! Welcome to my world!

9:52 PM
@Edity yeah I was told no more OT...

Glad I no longer work with people asking me to fix their computers. Yay!!!

@Terrance I use to have an assistant...and my duties use to include mostly paperwork...ordering stuff, some server work and network stuff...
basically making sure everything worked smoothly and the bills got paid...

Ah, sounds like fun!

but my assistant who did all the low level stuff quit...
and they decided they where not going to higher a replacement...
so now I do his job plus mine...
But I can't complain to much...because it is a job and all...
and I really do like it other then being overworked and underpaid...

sounds fun what does the company do?

9:57 PM
@PhilipKirkbride educates kids...
It is a prek-12 grade school district...

@terdon But that was a conditional clause type II - aren't people able to English nowadays any more?

:)

Anyway, the bells just rang midnight.
I should leave for now. Good night.

@ByteCommander Have a great night!

Good night
So

10:09 PM
@Serg I don't really know. I had trouble understanding them. I think they wanted to do something with all errors, of any command run in their system.

Schools: where networks and reliability don't seem to mix

user136984
Had a strange day so...

user136984
Goodnight folks! :)

@ParanoidPanda Have a good one! :)

@TheXed except it costs a decent amount of money
that is, until someone hacks it and releases a libre mirror, which i hope will be soon

11:06 PM
This is really weird.

11:24 PM
I'm about to nuke a VM, I've more then I need here, and want to get some free space for Arch
any suggestions?
there are some commands that I'm a little scared to type even on a VM haha

Hi, I just asked a question on askUbuntu - Here it is : http://askubuntu.com/questions/839861

I am really stuck in a rut and would like to know if anyone would be kind enough to look at it quickly - first, to know if you have any clue about what could happen - and second, to know how I could improve my questions (I think my title isn't very specific, and the question itself... enough details? ...? ) thanks

@Magix, I don't know if it would work with you, but found a similar error message with a solution here
maybe it's worth a shot?

Thank you, I will try ! :)

sad

11:38 PM
JEeeeezums

jeeze

Can we not delete that question?
It's our most downvoted one

the damn buttons on iphone are so annoying
somebody keeps clicking something on their phone

@Serg the damn iPhone is so annoying

@Zacharee1 honestly , whole Apple company is annoying

11:39 PM
@Serg why do you think someone took a bite out of it? :D

yeah, but they're hiring so...

@KazWolfe yay, work for a terrible company

@Zacharee1 It'll pay for our servers.

what you need to do is get a case for your OP3 that says ANDROID IS BETTER as brightly as possible

yeah first i need to sell my iPhone

11:41 PM
sell it already!

which now has a perfect screen with nary a single blemish on it.

 File "/usr/lib/python2.7/posixpath.py", line 68, in join
    if b.startswith('/'):
AttributeError: 'list' object has no attribute 'startswith'

I'VE BEEN TRYING ;;;---;;;

Python WTF ?

and original boxing, etc? @KazWolfe

11:41 PM
@Zacharee1 not anymore sadly

welp

i just have the phone, a case, and the box. And an aftermarket charger.

hmm
sell on Swappa

cant get a fair price

really?

11:42 PM
fair price = $480 in my pocket.

The prices for iPhones are pretty high there
6S 16GB right?

so i'd need to list it at 550 or something to cover shipping, paypal, and swappa fees.
and nobody will buy that when a new iPhone is also 550

but eBay takes a giant cut

not ebay, paypal
who takes a nice 10%
and will do so for swappa too

and eBay takes %13
at least on what I've sold

11:44 PM
AAAAAAAAAAA

hi @Videonauth

Ok, now that i'm 25% less frustrated . . .
carry on

What. The. Heck.

Q: seriously what a awesome community here1

mattcaspIs the people here such dim wit little fks. instead helping someone they get god complex.. reword my question to make some idiot feel all righteous. All i ask is how to to get the Grub2 to UEFI within the grub2 command or something. My QUESTION is a GRUB question was even a freaking tag for it...

@AndroidDev late to the party

@KazWolfe was headshot by @Zacharee1

11:45 PM
@KazWolfe ...
nooooooo
deleted :(

@Zacharee1 Yep.

someone watch that user please

Well this needs some serious editing... askubuntu.com/questions/839870/…

oh... he asked on UL too
SO WHY THE HELL DID HE COME HERE?!

Jesus Christ
just for that, downvote

11:47 PM
no.

@AndroidDev @Zacharee1 frankly, the question was on topic here

well, he was more patient than most people. 24 hours instead of 6

don't downvote on the user. -_-
@Serg How?!

@Serg no, it wasn't. GRUB is only on-topic if it has something to do with Ubuntu. OP literally said he couldn't use Ubuntu.

@KazWolfe original question was about grub
Grub comes with Ubuntu, ergo it is on topic

11:48 PM
Grub isn't a Ubuntu thing.
Grub comes with Debian.
And LinuxMint.

@KazWolfe firefox is also isn't Ubuntu thing

And <insert any modern distro thing>

@Serg So does KDE, but it's not on-topic if it's on SUSE

And we're not AskFirefox.

@Serg But help with using programs in Ubuntu is specifically on topic

11:48 PM
If the problem is Firefox on Ubuntu being something caused by Ubuntu, we help.

@KazWolfe and yet we still answer firefox questions . . .and chrome questions . . .and libre questions . . .and insert another software that comes with ubuntu by default here

@Serg Because they're, well on Ubuntu.

@Serg if they are using Ubuntu

@KazWolfe no, because they come with Ubuntu
Why do we have cowsay questions ? And cowsay tag ?

brb asking question about LibreOffice on Arch.

11:50 PM
GRUB is not a service or product provided by Canonical, GRUB is not an Ubuntu feature. GRUB is, essentially, a program bundled with Ubuntu. If the user is on Ubuntu and has a GRUB question, it is on-topic. If the user is on Fedora and has a question about GRUB it is not

Let's see how fast it gets closed.

@Serg:
> Using and administering official Ubuntu flavors including: Edubuntu, Ubuntu GNOME, Kubuntu, Ubuntu Kylin, Lubuntu, Mythbuntu, Ubuntu Studio, Xubuntu, Ubuntu MATE, Ubuntu Touch, and Ubuntu "Snappy" Core.

Running third-party applications on Ubuntu.

Development on Ubuntu.
Services provided by Ubuntu and Canonical.
Any question not mentioned below or here are great!
What we are concerned with is: Running third-party applications on Ubuntu.

Here's the thing boys : Ubuntu and generally any distro is set of software packages by definition. If we strip down everything that is "trully Ubuntu"
what's left is bare kernel

@KazWolfe Why would you do that?

(and I just realized this is terrible grammar: Any question not mentioned below or here are great!)

11:51 PM
@AndroidDev Because it's LibreOffice, which comes bundled with Ubuntu, and therefore is on-topic

@Zacharee1 GRUB is not provided by Canonical , yet we have tag for it , we have questions for it, and it's well on topic

@Serg so? OP was using one program in that bundle, not the whole thing, which is what makes it Ubuntu
@Serg Because it is a program running on Ubuntu

@Serg "How do I update Grub on Arch?"
How long do you think that question will fare?

What are we arguing about?

@KazWolfe that's off topic because it's about GRUB on Arch. We're on Ubuntu

11:52 PM
GRUB itself is not on-topic. GRUB is only on-topic here when it's proxied in by Ubuntu

@Serg So... you get the point?

@Zacharee1 sorry, i think i'll have to take it to meta

@Serg and that question was about GRUB on Androidx86!
it had literally nothing to do with Ubuntu besides saying that Ubuntu could not be used
you seem to be agreeing and disagreeing at the same time

Q: Fresh install of 16.04 LTS on an HP DL360 G5 is extremely slow

JohnCrocI installed 16.04 on an HP DL360 G5. It is extremely slow. System monitor shows all four Xeon cores running between 35 and 75%. Sorting the highest processor use to the top, in processes, shows Compiz using about 10% to 20% of the CPU. How do I troubleshoot this? Any ideas about what's wrong?

Interesting. --^

Ubuntu is killing a Xeon processor?! o_O

11:55 PM
@Zacharee1 OK , so why then are you arguing about GRUB ? That's exactly what needed to be said.
Androidx86 is off topic here

@Serg I said that at least twice...

@Zacharee1 I'm thinking maybe it's doing software rendering.

@Zacharee1 where ?

Because, @Serg, GRUB is not on-topic just because it's bundled with Ubuntu. It's only on-topic if it's part of Ubuntu.

@Zacharee1 this chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/33043476#33043476 is the first time you mentioned it in this conversation

11:57 PM
I swear I said it before
I guess I figured you'd just read the question...

@Zacharee1 I've re-read the whole transcript , that's the only place
Granted , I missed the Androidx86 part in question too

which is replying to your argument that those softwares are on topic

Yes, because I thought we were talking about GRUB on goddamn Ubuntu

Yeah, I thought you'd actually read the question o_O

@KazWolfe 3rd party apps are not part of Ubuntu , and yet we still support them.

11:59 PM
Because they're part of Ubuntu.

because you made this whole argument that it was on topic because it was GRUB, so I thought you had something to back your argument

They run on the Ubuntu platform, therefore they're considered part of that given installation.

@Serg Because they're on Ubuntu. "Running third-party applications on Ubuntu. "
