@cl-netbox -my- method would be to create an answer myself showing the (imo) more correct method. That also teaches -you- about that method. And at some point the TS will move the accepted vote to -my- answer- and not yours. And is a lot better then downvoting ;-)

Hi @jokerdino ! :) How are you ? ... and ... ONE ... ping ! :D

I am good. Thanks.

I would rather be bad :=) Like Meatloaf said ....

I don't actually care about one or more pings. I lurk or leave my browser open most times.

Good girls go to heaven. Bad girls go everywhere.
At work I do not even hear pings :+

5:01 PM
Make it a T and sell it everywhere.

More complaints about downvotes? Seriously people, if I had a dollar for every time someone complained about "unfair" downvotes I would be a very rich man.

No you won't.
I would steal half of that though.

@Seth no. you'd own Jeff Atwood :=)

@Rinzwind Yes the same would I do ... I completely agree with you ! ... The thing is : my answer contains an officially supported and granted to working solution ...

Q: Why are 'world' permission bits required for SAMBA user to access their own files?

void.pointerI'm not fully familiar with how it was specifically setup, but our IT department set up SAMBA on our Ubuntu Server v15 machine so that we could login via SSH using our Windows Domain credentials. Logging in works fine, but a user cannot access their own files in their home directory if the prope...

5:02 PM
@UbuntuQuestionsonU&L they are not :=D

Funny people : tell a guy to put a drink away and he's like "Hey, it's sealed, see ? "
People have problems with authority, seriously
even when it comes to such simple thing

@cl-netbox leech of his comments, and edit his comment into your question >;-D

Oli
If I had a dollar for every time somebody picked a fight with @UbuntuQuestionsonU&L...

@Oli :D :D :D

@Serg the scary thing is, these are the people that decide they want to join the military, or the police, or go into politics.

5:06 PM
@Rinzwind my question ? sorry I don't understand ? But thank you for supporting me, you @Serg of course as well ... I just have to calm down ... :)

user136984
@ByteCommander: We made it into the AU Newsletter at the top! :D

user136984

@ParanoidPanda Congrats my friend - hello ! :)

@cl-netbox sorry,... meant "answer". Edit his comment in and kill his reason for the downvote ;-)

@ParanoidPanda how do you keep doing it ? -__-

user136984
5:07 PM
@Rinzwind: I don't know! :D

que?

user136984
You should just try being more creative! ;P

Rod Smith practically wrote the book on EFI/UEFI and Linux (oh wait.. he did write the book!). If he says your answer is inefficient then there is a good chance it is.

Oli
Performance enhancing substances, I reckon. We should start doing randomised drug testing.

@Rinzwind You mean implementing it ? and referring to him ? sounds as a good idea ... shall I really do it ?

5:08 PM
Either way, people can vote however they want, as long as it isn't targeting one user.

brb downvoting Seth down to 10k.

:P

@cl-netbox see Seths comment above ;-) You are picking a fight you will not be able to win

@Seth But it should make sense - right ? Hello @Seth ! :)
@Rinzwind hahaha ... of couse not ! :D

@Seth he actually said "overkill" so he does not disagree with @cl-netbox that it IS an answer. Just that there is one that is less intrusive :-)

5:10 PM
@cl-netbox I don't see that it doesn't make sense. Maybe you should have asked nicely what issues he was referring to. Too late for that now..

Now ... I do not consider that a reason for a -downvote-.

user136984
Yay! I got Kanji! :D

FWIW I always recommend waiting at least an hour before replying to stuff that makes you upset. Otherwise you reply upset and things only get worse. Tip for next time.

@Seth What ? the downvote came hours after the accept

@Rinzwind Yes. If he thought it wasn't an answer he would have flagged it ;)
@cl-netbox so?

5:12 PM
@ParanoidPanda Kotobuki

@Seth Can't you really understand me in this special case ?

I do understand you. Someone said your answer wasn't optimal. Now you're upset.

lol. again a fight you wont win :D

Oli
It's his technical opinion. It's not targeted voting. There isn't a problem.

HC_
Hey guys, brand new Ubuntu user here, trying to learn to manage my own projects like a proper developer. Was wondering if anyone had any favorite resources on how to learn how to use git from the CLI? I only have GUI git experience so I am essentially starting with 0 knowledge. Otherwise I will just Google it of course

5:15 PM
@Oli @Seth Thanks ... I know it is not a big problem at all, it is just that I take my work on AU very seriously ! :)

user136984
@HC_: I'd always start with the manpage (man git)!

HC_
Ha, sounds good, thanks

You do realize I am smiling behind my notebook and consider it funny how this turned around :D @cl-netbox I've burned myself a few times too on :+ And even removed answers with a +2 or more due to 1 downvote ;-)

@cl-netbox Then I would advise removing the comments you posted when you were upset and ask him to be more specific. Rod really knows what he is talking about and I'm sure we could all learn something :)

user136984
No problem.

5:17 PM
@ParanoidPanda wow -> imgur.com/gallery/VoxHX

@HC_ I used try git as my first resource.

@Seth okay I remove my comments ...

wth Seth. You could have posted that more often :D -Bookmarked-

@Seth comments removed !

@cl-netbox if "gilles" or "jacobvlijm" ever comment be careful >:-D LOL
or chilli555 when he is answering about wireless networks
anyone in blue
or someone named markshuttleworth

5:21 PM
@Rinzwind yes Thanks again ... I will be careful ... :D

:D

Or me . . .

@Serg UUUHHHH

@cl-netbox you can ignore Serg for the time being. He is harmless
ok question from me: can a git project be a bunch of random perl scripts just for storing?

Am i ? When people misspell Ubuntu , i will make sure their question gets downgoat, comment, and a close vote for any reason

5:23 PM
@Rinzwind harmless ... ??? with a half bottle of vodka in his head ? @Serg are you really still harmless ? :D :D :D

@Rinzwind sure why not. All in my git is bash and awk scripts

@Serg hahaha

he is >:-D the men in blue will get him

y u no work windoze

Hehe, i am not a mean drunk. I cam break stuff when i am drunk but i will never harm a human . . . In fact i am usually a victim . . . .i can't fight or talk tricky. . . .i am pretty much weak person. . . .but i sure can downgoat

kos
5:26 PM
@Rinzwind What? Who cares about sorting stuff into different repositories?

@Serg How very non-Russian :p

@Zacharee1 every batch has bad apples

@Serg for me you are so cute ... with vodka or without ... such a nice guy ! :)

@Serg I think this is "good"

Aw, thanks @cl-netbox
@Zacharee1 sometimes i do wish i was more mean . . .
Or had a psycho mode

5:30 PM
@Serg the thing is ... I really do mean it ! :)

Ok lunch over , back to work

user136984
@Rinzwind: Wow! That is cool! Do they have one of a Totoro too? :D

@Rinzwind :D

[ SmokeDetector ] Link at end of body: Windows 10 Support Number by danial on askubuntu.com …

@Seth Question. On the Fisticuffs thing, what do you think about using IRC as a communication channel and a bot you PM as the game server?

5:41 PM
@SmokeDetector Wrong site buddy!
@hbdgaf would that communicate with the gui somehow or is this just textual?

@Seth How the GUI would talk to the server. So, XMPP was a no go, but it keeps you from running some custom socket server.

btw, while we're on the subject of git @Serg @Rinzwind:
alias wow ='git status' alias very ='git' alias such ='git' $ wow $ such commit $ very push
2

user136984
Oh dear, turns out I got Kana and not Kanji... :(

@hbdgaf hmm. It is definitely an interesting idea.
It could work, but it would require IRC to be up and running and (I guess?) a private channel.
Or would you leave it open for random people to watch and/or interact with?

@ParanoidPanda this has been asked already !!!

Q: Convinient Terminal which hides and unhides when key is pressed

Paranoid PandaIdeally I would like a way of easily toggling it so that a Terminal window (or something of the sort) appears over the top of everything when I press a certain keyboard shortcut and then disappears again when the keyboard shortcut is pressed again (or another keyboard shortcut), but I would like ...

There's tilda, and Guake, and Yakuake

user136984
5:45 PM
@Serg: Yes, apparently so... :D

@Seth Well open server open channels. PMs until a game completes with move logs available after the game. Wouldn't be fair to let someone parse their opponent's layout or whatever. Anyone could poke it.

@ParanoidPanda Is there a war to get something like this? No, there is no war ! Make software , not war !
:D
@Seth much tweet, so wow, very social media

@Serg xubuntu-terminal can do that too.

:)

user136984
@Serg: Woops! :D

user136984
5:49 PM
@Serg: "Don't mention the war! I mentioned it once but I think I got away with it..." :P

@ParanoidPanda you started it

I so wish i could skip my classes and just go pass out on those comfy chairs we have in a quiet study room

@Serg sounds like you need a trip to sofacon.org

@hbdgaf nah . . . i don't mind science fiction conventions . . . on the other hand, i would appreciate a trip to an actual sofa

user136984
@Rinzwind: You started it.

5:55 PM
@Serg You can sleep ANYWHERE youtube.com/watch?v=Snl4U8HPdtQ

@hbdgaf Sounds like it would work.
A tiny bit hackish, but workable.
Is there any precedent for this?

@Seth Not that I'm aware of. I'ld start with running a no-name IRC server, but you could theoretically tell it to play on any server any channel. I only worry about people abusing an open IRC server.

meh, if people abuse an open IRC channel they can get kicked.

That's true, but I don't want to have to police it.

user139252
@kos It was a Trio brand tablet. Not sure of the model, just something I found in my friend's house since my phone battery was dead. It didn't even have Chrome, just the regular "Browser" app that manufacturers include.

6:03 PM
@Serg Now I have a problem!
problems just keep coming in how can I learn programming with problems in my life!

HC_
@Seth thanks very much for the link, this looks very useful, going thru it now

@HenryWHHack problems never stop. Just keep trying , keep going. If you love programming, keep doing it

HELP ME PLEASE!

on masterchef Holland there is a webdesigner from the place Enter

what do you want help with ? @HenryWHHack
@Rinzwind oh, they've decided to learn a different type of design i see . . . food design !
gosh i wanna pass out

6:08 PM
@Serg No my 3 year old nephew he is very annoying how can I learn programming with a annoying child in my house he is evil!
interruption

@HenryWHHack young children can be loud or a bit attention-demanding . . . they don't know any better . . . be kind to your nephew. . . .
one day you're gonna have children yourself - that's a good practice for you

@Serg But how can I learn programming with loud noises from my nephew?
interruption!

@HenryWHHack headphones ?
and patience
At least you're dealing with one child . . . adults are much more annoying in a variety of annoying ways

@Serg I know I will create a nephewwall a system to keep me and my nephew in different rooms so he can't interruption me I am very smart!
lock myself in a room
alway from him!

well . . .that's no fun . . .

6:18 PM
@Serg WHAT WHY HOW?

Q: Terminal colors changing when opening a new tab

lister2097I'm running Ubuntu 14.04 (x64 desktop edition) and I have an issue in my terminal (bash) where my colors seem to get "saturated" and my line cursor changes to black when opening a new tab, the first screenshot below shows the correct colors: Correct (note how bright tmp is and the line cursor...

user136984
@Serg: Thanks for the edit by the way! :)

@ParanoidPanda always welcome ! I was you changed your war into better ways :P

user136984
@Rinzwind: You're meant to reply to say "You invaded Poland" by the way... :P

user136984
Unless we weren't following the Faulty Towers quotes? :D

6:23 PM
@ParanoidPanda do you have facebook ?

user136984
Why do you ask @Serg?

user136984
@Serg: Ah, thanks! :)

kos
@TheBrownOne Not even sure if the new chat is meant to be supported on that.

user139252
Exactly why it wasn't :P

How does one keep their system as best protected as possible from malware/etc? I'm searching for Ubuntu Antivirus and the results are a bit unclear as to what actions to actually take. security.stackexchange.com/questions/63097/…

user139252
@HC_ Because of the way Linux works, there isn't much need for antivirus. Just don't download strange binaries.

user139252
That's pretty much it.

user139252
It isn't really malware that harms Linux users, it's malicious attacks from others using either recently discovered exploits or the fact that the target wasn't practicing good security.

user139252
Set-up Fail2Ban to prevent SSH bruteforcing, use a secure password, set-up two-factor authentication, set up security limits...

@HC_ People ask "How does one keep a computer safe" . Computer is a machine and it won't go around downloading something without your input. Security starts with people making proper choices

6:36 PM
@HC_ I use a normal system. Nothing else. A normal Linux system is good to go

user136984
@TheBrownOne: But it can be useful to scan downloaded files with an AV. It can also be useful if you've looked at malicious images etc which have stayed in your cache, ClamAV often tells me about those.

It is more between your ears then anything else: dont go downloading random stuff. stick to the repositories and know locations (like launchpad)

user136984
@HC_: I would suggest you install clamav (and maybe clamtk if you don't want to use the command-line all the time to control it), and rkhunter (to protect against rootkits which are a real threat).

kos
(And perhaps someone with superpowers block the user)

@HC_ feel free to upvote this askubuntu.com/questions/745220/… ;-)

6:42 PM
Why I cannot sleep and have regular schedule like a normal human being ?

Hungry :( Takeaway dude is taking too long

@rinzwind be patient. As an ex-delivery guy , i can tell the guy probably has other orders ahead of you

1 hour already :(

oh . . .

lol
and he is like ... 400 meters from where I live

HC_
6:48 PM
Thanks everyone for info regarding antivirus :)

common sense trumps any antivirus :-P
and you may quote me on that >:-D
still hungry

HC_
Yeah I've never used one in like ten years on my windows system tbh and it's been fine.. just wanted to be safe :^)

user136984
@Rinzwind: Not necessarily in terms of vulnerabilities being exploited...

user136984
@HC_: If you want to be really safe you can install a Host Intrusion Detection System like OSSEC.

I don't use antivirus on Windows either.

6:51 PM
fooooood!

Goodbye ... see you tomorrow ... and thanks again for your support @Rinzwind and @Serg - it really was a great help to overcome frustration ! :)

@cl-netbox always welcome buddy. have a good rest
Should I just sleep in class today ?

user136984
@cl-netbox: Bye! :)

I probably could do that

@ParanoidPanda Goodbye my friend - have a nice evening ! :)

6:52 PM
i mean , , ,for the past 3 weeks it's been nothing but notes notes notes , , , and it's all a mess

back in a bit :-D

bye @Seth ! see you ... :)

@Serg Where I'm from the professors will bring a bat or gravel with them and if they see you fall asleep they will walk up and slam it down on the desk in front of your face.

@Rinzwind bon apetite ! :)

@cl-netbox bye!

6:55 PM
@Seth very few of our professors actually would do that :) . . .

user136984
How come only information stuff in the stared list? Why no funny stuff?! :D

Now we have funny stuff there too

7:12 PM
saw that this morning on reddit :) very very good

@kos yup.

@hbdgaf That was better than I thought it would be.
The ending was freaking amazing!
the top comment was very good too:
> I'm sorry government, but you've lost your right to tell us to "trust you." You've proven that you cannot be trusted - or even to follow the law. Why is it that every time the government fails to prevent a terrorist attack, their answer is that we're too free? That they need more power? Why do we never ask the question "Why didn't the government see this coming?" Is there any chance that government is simply not doing a good enough job with the powers they've already bene granted - and not that we all have to sacrifice yet more liberties?

@JacobVlijm I used your name to make a point today >:)

@hbdgaf That was actually very informative

@Rinzwind I feel honoured! Where was that?

7:29 PM
In chat . . . from @jokerdino :p

argv ! why schools have no sleeping rooms ?
plenty of millions well wasted on carp , but a sleeping room would be well received by students and even improve performance on average

I did not see that one :-) very well put
But I do not think a government can stop terrorism. Only the terrorists can. IRA ran out of supporters. ETA too.
back in a bit. Riddick on TV <3

@Rinzwind ha! :)

@Serg Work for Google

7:32 PM
@ParanoidPanda soon enough. I haven't forgotten.
But I do want to put the effort into it that it deserves.
(In other words, I'm not going to "throw something together".)

@Zacharee1 I am not that good

@Serg :p
I like the quote:

@Serg I'm pretty sure a few do.

@seth where ? how do i apply there ? sign me up

> When I hear 'if we can put a man on the moon we can do this' I'm hearing an analogy almost as if we're saying 'if we can put a man on the moon, well surely we can put a man on the sun'
4

7:35 PM
Yup, sounds about right.

except moon isn't millions of degrees Fahrenheit of burning heat, and sure isn't in state of continuous fusion

user136984
VTC this EOL question.

@ParanoidPanda no

"If we can put a man on the moon, we can solve the travelling salesman problem, solve the Riemann hypothesis, square the circle, cure cancer, and produce cheap nuclear fission."

user136984
God, why are there so many people who still run EOL versions?

7:38 PM
@NathanOsman Yes

user136984
@Zacharee1: What?

@ParanoidPanda ask @Rinzwind , his system goes back as far as 9.04 i think

@ParanoidPanda I won't VTC it :p

user136984
@Zacharee1: Why not?

user136984
I mean, you don't have to, but it is off-topic...

7:39 PM
@ParanoidPanda it was a joke

He's feeling sassy

@ParanoidPanda They see installation tutorials that instruct for older versions, or they just don't realize that there are new versions

user136984
@Zacharee1 Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha! That's the best jokes I've heard in years!!!!!!!

user136984
:P

Ok, time to clock out and go for a nap somewhere
I am so productive - nothing done today, and all i wanna think about is sleep

user136984
7:41 PM
@Serg: How are you doing by the way with the move to China? :P

user136984
Did you know that Panda cuddling is a real profession there? :D

@Serg I don't know off the top of my head..

@ParanoidPanda I'm still broke, no money, so not doing too good . . . If only @Zacharee1 found a way for me to get a job at Google , maybe i will go there some day

@Serg customer service?

user136984
7:46 PM
@Zacharee1 @Serg: What about sleep and food eating service? :P

user136984
@Serg: Well, sometime within the next 20 years (the sooner the better) I plan on moving to Japan... :)

@Serg 6.06 :=)

@Rinzwind just one question : why you guys haven't upgraded ?
@ParanoidPanda i like the idea . . . Or relationship with China services
Meanwhile . . .I'm about to take a nap. . . .wake me uo in about an hour . . . .see ya

oh. we buy new hardware and then install Ubuntu onto it. So we have a 6.06, 8.04, 12.04 and 14.04 servers. The 10.04 one died ;-)
The 6.06, 8.04 servers are only used to store backups on to.
