12:05 AM
Slow extraction
Have to manually install the WiFi driver. Laptop's too new :p
Thankfully the site supplies Windows 7 drivers
Hey it worked

12:31 AM
Chatting from Windows 7
Graphics still installing
And activated
@Seth you're in CA?
@Seth Oh, you're in Seattle

What? I can't hear you over the thunder and rain outside!

sigh
It sounds bad
This .NET Framework installation for NVIDIA is taking forever
The drive indicator is blinking so something's happening
OK this isn't right
It's taking way too long

12:48 AM
yo, so I upgraded to xenial, and while grive does still works for me, I wanted a taste of that real native Google Drive integration

@Zacharee1 a fresh .net install can take a while
It needs to compile stuff, oddly enough

@JourneymanGeek it was going on 15 minutes without progress
I force cancelled and rebooted

I added my Google Apps for Work account and it identified... Hangouts... Photos? and nothing else. (That's not entirely unsurprising since we don't use e.g. GMail)

BUT I'M ON WINDOWS 7 :DDDDD

I'm on windows 10

12:50 AM
is Google Drive integration hidden behind some other package?
@JourneymanGeek but is it an insider preview build?

@JourneymanGeek Windows 10 has been nothing but a headache since I reinstalled

@JourneymanGeek aww.

All my systems are in the regular track

Even before then

12:51 AM
you're missing out on the occasional MEMORY_MANAGEMENT bluescreen

@badp darn

also I guess new features that are so tiny I can hardly notice any
I guess the current build refreshed the lockscreen

@badp what'd it do?
I'm not going to dare to go back to insider builds

oh, my desktop BSODs if I have my external soundcard plugged in during my daily backup

@JourneymanGeek Windows 10, the most stable OS yet

12:54 AM
@Zacharee1 cosmetic stuff

@badp screenie pls :p

@Zacharee1 of the lockscreen?

@badp picture then? Preview from Settings?

eh I've seen OSX bluescreen when plugging in a thumbdrive

@badp But that's Mac

12:55 AM
oh, maudio's drivers are bad
its just a wierd interaction I guess

@Zacharee1 when I first installed it the lockscreen picture and the login prompt picture were the same
so when the lockscreen went up, the login prompt faded in
now they're out of sync again? so it's back to old behaviour

oh
weird

btw, those lockscreen pictures.
they've pretty much been licensing a different professional photo every day, and, psst
 cd /cygdrive/c/Users/*/AppData/Local/Packages/Microsoft.Windows.ContentDeliveryManager_*/LocalState/Assets
that is where they are stored
there's also the occasional app icon there so use identify from imagemagick to see which pictures are the real deal
or maybe just du | sort -n
Iunno

You edit a lot

I do because I care!

1:03 AM
:P
@JourneymanGeek still installing
GAH
Internet is cutting out again
Manually installed netfx 4.0 and it's not looking good
downloaded fine, but no install progress

1:39 AM
@Seth Thanks! Do keep me posted.

Will do. I assume you are subscribed to the mailing list?

Yes, but you know how well I manage my inbox. :S

:P

2:11 AM
Oh wow, the branch with the changes was approved for merging on the 11th. Looks like it might land afterall.

what?

cool

Next time I hear someone say cable management:

3.9GB worth of updates
Yeesh
I missed you, Windows 7
But wow, it's a lot of updates
25% done already O_o
THE OS IS SO FAST

3:32 AM
Texas is lame. Only 10:30pm here and we ran out of things to do

user139252
@Zacharee1 I still don't see why you keep using Windows...

@TheBrownOne Be like my neighbors and go hunting at 11:30
@TheBrownOne Because I have to for school
And if I'm going to I might as well have Windows 7
94% of that 4GB
The speed varies a lot
Sometimes it goes 7% in a minute
Sometimes it's like 7 minutes per %
95%
jumped to 99

@muru +1 here (discuss.area51.stackexchange.com/q/23099/148915), however I posted an identical question some days ago (perhaps I shouldn't have delete it) and it was insta-closed by Robert Cartaino. Apparently you're not welcome to discuss on-topic / off-topic directly in the discussion area, he said what's on-topic / off-topic is to be determined via the sample questions. So technically we're supposed to post a sample question about a derivative.

Creating a restore point...
It's installing the German display language for some reason
Well I accidentally selected all the language packs to install
So now I have to redownload

3:50 AM
@kos He did? O.o Because there were at least three such discussion posts about the Vi and Vim proposal: area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/80441?phase=definition
8
Q: Are vimgolf questions on topic on vi/vim?

mixedmathWould asking vimgolf style questions be on topic on vi/vim? This is a type of question that is poorly suited for SO and most of the other SE sites. While it is conceivable that such a question would be suited to CodeGolf.SE, they only have two vimgolf questions there. It also does not feel clear ...

Q: Would NeoVim be included?

Brian HicksProposal: Vi and vim Seems like NeoVim (the engine) would make sense to be included, but what about NeoVim front ends?

Q: Would questions relating to gvim, elvis, nvi be relevant?

onebreeProposal: Vi and vim I've seen others relate to gvim in proposal questions. See comments. I also have a pocket guide for vi and Vim, which includes "Additional features in vile, elvis, and nvi" (O'Reilly). Although other editors may be less popular, I think it is important to include them in t...

Q: Improving the plugin API for vim

Vishal LamaProposal: Vi and vim Could we discuss some of the issues related to the current version of vim, especially the unpleasant parts apropos its plugin API, and how it could be improved? I am aware that neovim is a project meant to rectify this issue. I am interested in knowing how neovim, or other s...

Now WU isn't showing the progress

kos
@muru He did. I can't find the deleted question, but the comment went along the lines of "Only discussions strictly related to the proposal itself should go here, what's on-topic or off-topic is to be determined via the sample questions. But keep the question ready for when the site launches.". O.o

All right, I'll let him close this one and keep it undeleted as a sign post. :D

kos
Yep. Shouldn't have deleted mine >.>
By the way there's no way to see own past deleted questions, is there?

On Area51, dunno. Here, sure.

3:56 AM
I see RolandiXor on the frontpage!
He's alive!

@Seth Kill it! Kill it fire!

O_O

kos
@muru There it is! How come I don't have the link to see recently deleted questions on the profile?
However here's the comment:
> What is on topic and off topic can be voted on by the "example questions" of the proposal. But hang on to your question until the site is actually launched. I can appreciate your enthusiasm for getting started on the broader administrative challenges of running this site, but it is best to save these questions for the folks who are going to be actively using this site in actual practice. Area 51 is for questions about getting the proposal launched. Sorry about the confusion.

4:14 AM
I can't tell if this is someone making fun of the Arch stackexchange proposal or not

It was pretty close to the area51 question about "UL subsumes arch" bringing up that old debate again.
So, I heard SE uses MSSQL. I wonder if they'll be switching to linux in the datacenter now that MSSQL is coming to linux? Odd theoretical questions.

Somewhat doubtful

I doubt it too. Just a thought that whizzed in one ear and out the other.

Q: Wacom Tablet (integrated; X201T) disconnects sporadically

occamsrazorI have an X201 tablet with stylus and finger multitouch running Ubuntu 14.04.4 with the 4.2.0 kernel. @kos Question:How many hours a day should I spend learn programming will 5 do or 7 hours?
I know I know annoying!
@hbdgaf WOW WHAT?
What does the wires do is it some super machine?
I can hear you telling yourself oh this boy is stupid he is so stupid!
@Takkat I am just having a talk with myself!

kos
@HenryWHHack I'd say that's personal... Whatever time you can and you're willing to spend. Personally I find that practicing constantly is more important than spending lots of time when you're learning something, because your brain is kept focused on what you're learning and new information is kept fresh. Of course spending more time will get you farther in a shorter time (to some extent though: trying to learn too much stuff at once when you're starting could just confuse you).
@Takkat Thought so as well, but then I looked at the user's registration date and they registered 2 months ago. I think it migh be just a bad question

8:40 AM
@kos that game was mentioned by spammers before... it is a hidden attempt to let us google for a pirate site mentioned in the post. Entirely unrelated to Ubuntu.

7 hours!

kos
@Takkat Yeah it looks so spammy. Ok flagged. But do spammers really register 2 months before just to get their posts through?

@kos good point, but who knows what is in the mind of a spammer?

kos
@Takkat Well, not me. But fair point. It just looked weird.

@kos I would also have some doubt if they were asking for an Ubuntu game version... but this is not the case here.
@kos grats!

@Takkat Yeah... Thinking about it most likely it's spam.
@Takkat Thanks!

@kos I am going with 7 hours every other day.

@ByteCommander I got stuck on 17 Got fed up updating it _O-

kos
@HenryWHHack 7 hours a day is commitment. Good luck!

@kos My time chat goes like.
@kos This leaves a question now.
Should I give up science for programming?

kos
10:45 AM
@HenryWHHack That I can't really answer for you.
You should think about what's better for you.

@kos Also I don't really want to be a programmer I am learning it because I want to be a white hat hacker I love securing computers,networks,learn about computer security and IT/SEC the world need more white hats!
but I don't want to be a programmer
I forgot pentesting.
and encryption!
@kos Are you a white hat hacker?
if so how did you learn it?
Does the bot make errors false results anything like that?

kos
@HenryWHHack Nope, not at all. However I'd guess some basic knowledge of programming would be required or highly suggested in any kind of hacking-related activity.

@kos If you are hacking without programming your a SCRIPT KIDDIE!!!!

kos
@HenryWHHack Yeah, I agree with that.

Windows Update auto-installed Skype
I was going to anyway, but wow

@Zacharee1 Windows introduced cumulative updates as early as in Windows 10... Before that each application update needed be installed prior to the next update. This led to insane update orgies where computers became unusable for hours until the update process finally came to its end.

11:41 AM
@Takkat Go MS...
It's going to be a pain to move Windows 10 and 7 to the SSD when I get it

I believe there is a software to do that .. at least they used something like that in our company.

@Takkat It's called partition cloning, and I know how to do it. It just takes forever. I think I'm going to downsize the partitions as much as possible to clone them and then resize them to fill the SSD
Installing MORE updates
MOAR

@Zacharee1 windows version?

7
Still have 10, but I'm hoping to use 7 more

11:57 AM
i hate the 10
the Get_Windows_X (GWX) program that was running on my win8 pc made me hate it

U8 crashes my notebook :*

lol

@GeoMint Get the GWX Control Panel to disable those popups
@Rinzwind noteboot
I hope the SSD is SATA 1 or 2, so GRUB will continue to work
Now for boot-repair to actually get GRUB back

user136984
@Nathan: Hey, when is George going to release another YouTube video? :)

@Zacharee1 i just moved the C:\Windows\System32\GWX to documents :P
i never saw that again

12:07 PM
@GeoMint that works too I guess xD

:P

This data partition is great. I can set my system folder locations on Windows 7/10 and Ubuntu to the folders on the drive and have my Downloads, Desktop, Documents, etc. shared

being a company behind the os is very good i think.
a community can not do the same

@GeoMint yeah, you can do whatever you want and say "the customer wants it"
@GeoMint Ubuntu?

ubuntu = company + community
the compination is the best

@GeoMint the what

@GeoMint Ubuntu = Canonical + community :+)

hahahahahahaha
HAHAHAHAHAHA
Best joke out there
i stopped the updates on my pc

We have it organized so much better... just a red sign in the top panel that says we should just reboot some times.

:)

I tend to hit it with wsus offline updates if its a fresh install

@Takkat and even then you can still forget about it :P
what is sooooooooo stupid is that they force updates during a shutdown

12:16 PM
@Rinzwind my machine never ever stopped working, not even on a do-release-upgrade.

so you want to go home. close your notebook and have to wait another hour

@Takkat Honestly, that's what this feels like

or on poweron - it can take half an hour until you can check e-mails.

yeah
and we can keep on using firefox during an install of the OS.

@Takkat I think if you press shift or change an option that'll go away
@Rinzwind Or install Chrome and use it :p

12:17 PM
basically: WE RULE!

I'm going to have so many driver installers to delete

heh
does chrome does the annoying keeping all the old installers thing on linux?

Another reboot because the chipset driver wasn't installed
@JourneymanGeek what?

@Zacharee1 chrome keeps old version installers on linux
you periodically need to clear them out manually

user136984
If you're suspended from one SE site you can still do stuff on others can't you?

12:23 PM
most of the time
unless its a network wide suspension

user136984
Oh dear, I've got Buddhist chants going round in my head... :D

and a suspension on your main account = chat account.

Oli
@ParanoidPanda I guess that depends who suspends you. A SE staff member would be able to suspend you network-wide.

I decided as hillarious as it was, it might be offensive to the insufficiently enlightened ;p

@ParanoidPanda what'd you do?

user136984
12:26 PM
:D

user136984
@Zacharee1: What do you mean?

sigh

user136984
@Oli: How would you tell if somebody had got a network-wide suspension? Would it say that they had been suspended on all of their SE profiles or wouldn't you be able to tell?

@ParanoidPanda if they have 1 rep on everything you can be pretty confident

user136984
Well, the person I'm thinking of has never posted on any of the sites he's part of other than the site he was suspended from, so that's hard to tell...

12:28 PM
@ParanoidPanda and if they have a suspension message on every site you can tell for sure

user136984
They've only got it on one site, I was just wondering because they seem to go to the other sites they are part of, but they never seem to post or interact at all so I was just curious if it was a network-wide one... And if I could tell...

I think the message is the way
Is this Michael?

user136984
Who? No...

user136984
No, it's a certain guy who rather likes ducks a little too much for his own good and I just like to keep an eye on him...

@ParanoidPanda Are you a white hat hacker?
if so how did you become one?

12:32 PM
The guy whose answers were always
Have you tried this:
some command
and it might work fine this way

He never repsonded when we told him that was not a good way to answer questions
And most of the time the answers were wrong, dangerous or copies of older answers

user136984
@HenryWHHack: Among other things, yes, I've always had a talent for finding weaknesses in systems.

@ParanoidPanda What?

user136984
What do you mean what?

@ParanoidPanda WOW!

user136984
Ok...

user136984
12:34 PM
@Zacharee1: Must have missed that guy...

@ParanoidPanda I find that hard to believe

user136984
@Zacharee1: There was a period in which I wasn't really going through the review queues that much and I wasn't really looking at other answers and questions as I was very busy with other stuff so maybe that's when it all occurred... What's happened to him now? Does he still lurk in the depths of this site? :D

@ParanoidPanda he was suspended, I think until the 22nd
29th

user136984
Ah...

Like:
You could try this, and enter this from the terminal:

 dconf replace -f /org/compiz
 unity --reset-icon &disown
 sudo dkms-reconfigure unity
and it might work fine this way.

12:49 PM
So, I've installed openSUSE with gnome
First reaction. . . . Why on earth an os is under the US export laws ?
Second, ifconfig is in sbin and sbin by default isn't in user's path
So either type full path or use sudo
Finally . . . .Ubuntu has far smoother installation process.
So far, i am happier with Ubuntu. Will see if suse can impress me more

kos
@Serg It's the same in Debian IIRC.

@kos sbin is in our path though

Oli
@ParanoidPanda I'd probably be able to see the annotation on the account explaining why they'd been suspended.

@Serg plus it mentions AskUbuntu in the slideshow. Suse does not dare to do that :D
oh and the US Export Law: probably cuz they ship with encryption tools. That's not allowed from the US to the outside without authorization from the US gov.
