Q: How to enable secure boot without issue?

Paranoid PandaI read here that it is essential to have Secure Boot enabled: However I find that when I enable Secure Boot, it changes it so that systems can boot with UEFI boot, but not Legacy, it also disables CMS. However, when I then try to boot my system, I get 3 different start things that I can boot f...

user136984
:)

I used boot-repair to replace my legacy grub with a UEFI one
idk if that's in any way relavant

user136984
Probably, but I am not familiar with the full workings of the boot process, so I don't know...

user136984
How come I don't have a UEFI one in the first place?

8:28 PM
guys i was just reading this uestion here

Q: How do I navigate between directories in terminal?

n00bI am new to Linux and Ubuntu and have tried changing to folders/directories with some difficulty. Could someone explain why the following commands failed to change to the desired target folder/directory? sharon@sharon:~$ cd Home bash: cd: Home: No such file or directory sharon@sharon:~$ cd /H...

can somebody tell me , how can i navigate to the home directory ?

> ~ always refers to the home directory of the current user (/home/sharon in your case). If you enter cd ~/Downloads you'll land in your Downloads folder.

yes ! got it

user136984
Testing testing testing...

I though it was pretty clearly in the first answer... Do you think it could be improved to be more helpful?

user136984
@AnubianNoob: Just testing something... Could you please post a message and then remove it.

user136984
8:32 PM
:)

Oh are you making a SE chat client?
OOOOOOH BUUUURN

user136984
@AnubianNoob: No, just exploiting a weakness in this one! >;P

What exactly?

user136984
Well, I don't know, perhaps it is meant to be so, I will have to ask.

user136984
Are there any mods around?

user136984
8:34 PM
@NathanOsman?

user136984
@Seth: Oh! Just the right person! :D

Seth is here

wazzup?

What did I miss?

user136984
Should people be allowed to view the history of other people's deleted messages (so that they can see what was deleted)? It doesn't seem right to me...

8:36 PM
haha now you got both of them

user136984
:D

@ParanoidPanda Well the client deletes it
It sends a packet saying "this shit is deleted yo" and the website is like "cool ok bye bye (deleted)"
But the client got the original packet saying "this is the message"

user136984
Well, how come I was able to view your deleted message and history after you deleted it then?

user136984
Does it just take time?

oh I see

8:37 PM
hello

Intentional for sure

sudo dpkg -i pgrouting-workshop_2.0.6-ppa1_all.deb
what is the above command essentially doing ?

@NathanOsman where is George??

Yeah you can see history of an edited or deleted message
@AlexanderSolonik Installing that package

dpkg is essentially a package manager i know

user136984
8:38 PM
@AnubianNoob: So what's the point of having a remove feature that almost certainly removes the message, but not quite...?

dpkg is essentially a step below apt-get, -i means install, and the .deb is a package file

step below ?

@ParanoidPanda anything that you delete on the Internet, takes a while to get deleted from the server. :D

@AnubianNoob ty for the explanation .

8:40 PM
@ParanoidPanda Well the server can't delete it, since it already sent it technically. It can only ask the client to. I assume that's the mentality behind that decision
@AlexanderSolonik I'm not 100% sure here but I think dpkg is what actually installs the packages, and apt-get downloads, manages upgrades/dependencies, etc.

Thanks !

user136984
I still think that it's not great that I can just go here:

user136984
And get the history of a deleted message:

user136984

8:41 PM
I think it makes sense
The server has sent the data

So I should be able to see it

what does .deb package mean ?

@ParanoidPanda That message wasn't deleted.

@AlexanderSolonik But you don't ever have to do that, you can just use apt-get

user136984
8:42 PM
@Seth: Oh?

@Seth You can see history for a deleted message too

user136984
I thought it was...

@AlexanderSolonik It's a file that has the package you can install

This one was deleted: chat.stackexchange.com/messages/23841518/history can any of you see it?

Yeah we can

8:43 PM
screenshot?

@AlexanderSolonik apt-get install some-package essentially downloads a deb file and installs it with dpkg I believe
(seth can you confirm this?)

11 mins ago, by Anubian Noob
Oh are you making a SE chat client?

user136984
@Seth: Oh sorry, must have had a clipboard error and got the link wrong...

@AnubianNoob yup

user136984
My mistake though, I am glad that I was wrong.

user136984
8:44 PM
:)

@RonnieDroid He's here.
@GeorgetheDev hello.
Okay, maybe he's not here...

@GeorgetheDev what's up

it does do a bit more than just wget and dpkg a .deb file, but it's pretty much the same thing.

Oh ok so you can only see history for your own message?

8:44 PM
@AnubianNoob yeah
for e.g.:

@Seth Oh awesome I was right :D

Ok yeah you can't see history for someone elses
Only your own
But you can f12, go to the network view, go to the websocket, and look up a couple of frames if you're really desperate

@AnubianNoob yes, yes you can.
well actually

well no I take that back

8:47 PM
afaik you have to have the websocket view open already

Yeah

so if I have it open now I can record them, but I can't get them after the fact.

You have to open it before loading the page to record requests

Are we talking Chrome or Firefox?
Actually, I didn't know either of them captured frames from WebSockets.

Chrome does, FF doesn't.

8:49 PM
I'm talking chrome

Oh cool. I didn't realize that.

@Seth I totally missed this message but it has gone really well :)

@AnubianNoob ty again

No problem!

@AnubianNoob Awesome! It looks great!
<-- really wants back to Ubuntu

8:55 PM
haha
I'm enjoying this a ton

user136984
Right anyway...

user136984
Goodnight! :)

@ParanoidPanda See you later.

This grid of desktops is 50000x better than alt-tabbing through everything

@AnubianNoob yeah, it's probably my favourite feature.
Windows 10 tried to do it, but I don't think they got it quite right.

8:58 PM
Nope not really
Right now it'd be really convenient if that popup when you ctrl-alt-arrow would highlight the current desktop
I have a spatial awareness of where things are but not where I am haha

9:12 PM
when i run this command
sudo ln -s ~/Desktop/pgrouting-workshop /var/www/html/pgrouting-workshop
/var/www/html/pgrouting-workshop no such file or directory
how do i solve this problem ? :(

@AnubianNoob super+s might sorta help.

The expose view is nice but I prefer switching workspaces by moving rather than hitting a key, moving, and hitting another key, ya feel?

yeah
I would suggest patching unity, but there isn't really any point at this late date because unity is being entirely rewritten for 15.10/16.04.
btw, tried Unity 8 lately @Mateo?

haha I love that that's a solution

does every ubuntu installation come with the following folders /var/www/html/pgrouting-workshop
?

9:24 PM
not for a bit, besides on my phone ;)

@AlexanderSolonik Not at all

ohh ok
but if i put a folder in that directory

@AlexanderSolonik nope nope nope.

then i can access it like so right

That's a webserver's directory.

Usually Apache.

but ive been watching some videos, looks like progress is going good

@AlexanderSolonik pretty much, yeah.
@Mateo awesome!

so i just need to create that folder structure ?

Do you know what the ETA is for it? Did they extend the deadline for 16.04?
@AlexanderSolonik no you can't just create it and put stuff there.

9:26 PM
or download xampp or something ?

What are you trying to do?

You can access the filesystem from a web browser like so: file:///var/www/html/pgrouting-workshop which is more sane then installing a web server.

In this case running the program probably creates the directory if it doesn't exist
You can create it yourself to set up the symlink
That's a pretty obvious gap in the tutorial...

user139252
I got into my doctorate programs!

9:30 PM
@HeatherBrown Congrats!

user139252
In two years, I will be Doc Brown!

@HeatherBrown (that was really really fast... weren't you writing your applications or smth yesterday??)
Totally see the resemblance

user139252
@AnubianNoob Yes, I was.

user139252
This school just happens to have a fast review department.

And you happen to be a horrible procrastinator ;)

user139252
9:34 PM
No, I applied, they said "You have 24 hours to complete this essay! Good luck!". Their fault :P

user139252
I am pursuing my PhD in Computer Mechanics and English composition

That's a really nice process
Start to finish in two days
In both?

user139252
No, it took them 5 weeks to get from "application received" to "write this essay"

user139252
Two separate doctorates.

9:38 PM
@HeatherBrown Oh weird
@HeatherBrown So do you have to apply for both?

user139252
Yes, the English composition entry essay was much easier. Did both of them in that 24 hour period.

Nice!

@serg: thats for the upvote!
@HeatherBrown: yes, I was referring to your A on English.SE... ;-)

user139252
@Fabby Bit late to the party?

9:50 PM
Enough job hunting for today!
Just dropping by here for some relaxation... ;-)

10:04 PM
This is a very relaxing group

user139252
If nobody appeases me soon, I'm going to do something awful!

user139252
I want all of you to stress out about this!

@HeatherBrown Puh! iIgnoreComment++ :D

Q: Permission denied (publickey,gssapi-keyex,gssapi-with-mic)

ryekayoOk, so I have tried this quite a few times and I'm sure this is very trivial but: I am trying to SSH via command line on Ubuntu into my VM (Centos6) with an RSA key-pair I created using key-gen. I have created the key-pair and appended the public key to authorized_keys file and changed the permis...

So, my coworker was helping a student go over a quiz she took... She was confused on finding the measure of a central angle of a circle in radians given arc length and radius...

user139252
He started going on off on how you can find the measure in degrees based on the circumference and how much of the circumference the the arc covers and then converting that result into radians....

user139252
Am I wrong in thinking that it would be easier to use theta(radians)=ArcLength/Radius?

Buenos evening, Senor @Fabby!

@chili555 We're both on-line for once!
\o/\o/\o/
Good afternoon, good sir!
How are things going?

Doing well, I hope??
Reasonably well here.

10:23 PM
I hope that means: "last time I looked things were fine"
:D

Exactly!

I'm still job hunting... Long day of it too...

@Fabby I thought you said you were relaxing?

Not even looked at AU today...

It has been a long search, IIRC.

10:25 PM
This is relaxation: the chat, looking at some new answers of people I can learn from
@chili555 Yeah...

Q: Why does installing Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS server give me 14.04.3

James HI need to install Ubuntu 14.04.1 on some systems for consistency reasons. I made sure to get an iso called ubuntu-14.04.1-server-amd64.iso, yet lsb_release reports: ubuntu:~$ lsb_release -a No LSB modules are available. Distributor ID: Ubuntu Description: Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS Rele...

First raters hire first raters...
Second raters hire third raters.

LOL!

Good philosophy

And unfortunately, the computing industry has tons of people in it that are just in it for the money, or the prestige, or...

user139252
10:26 PM
What's money?

not because they're passionate about it or really interested...
@HeatherBrown You've got a job...
For you it's mostly green...

user139252
@Fabby It was a joke, teachers don't make much in California :P

(actually: for me too as those are the 5€ notes...
@HeatherBrown You make something
:P

I make money by painting walls and sanding floors... (and the odd back-up and upgrade to lubuntu)
(and complex printer install: that got me 50€)
@chili555 Basically, My CV looks good (it needs a bit spicing up, but the content is good)
but I scare lots of people...

user139252
10:29 PM
I remember those days... Working my way through my first Bachelor's.... I think I ate nothing but Hot Pockets for 2 whole months once...

>:-)
@HeatherBrown Looking up Hot Pockets.

user139252
@Fabby Don't, it will only make you depressed.

@Fabby Scare?

Breakfast of Champions = Hot Pockets

@HeatherBrown I'd make those myself: ham&cheese, mushrooms&leek, ...

user139252
10:31 PM
They come 2 for $2USD and there are a variety of flavors

Wow!
OK, I probably wouldn't make those myself then...
Never had any.

user139252
In California, you can even line a box with tin foil and use the sun to bake them, so it saves on your gas and electric bills.

Which reminds me: I was visiting a friend in Oregon and we went to the supermarket.

user139252
Except in the months of November - February where I live in California.

and I saw my first Hershey bar...

10:33 PM
I believe other ingredients include artificial food color and chemical preservatives

@Fabby Do you live under a rock?

and told my friend: "Wow! A Hershey bar! I've never had any! Can I buy one?" (she was paying)

user139252
@AnubianNoob They have Mars over there, not Hershey so much.

@chili555 probably mostly chemicals!

@HeatherBrown oh gotcha... Mars is way better though

user139252
10:34 PM
Of course.

You shoudl have seen the face of the woman behind the till when she looked at me...
Like I crawled from under a rock.

there is no bad chocolate bar, IMO

When I told her there are no Hershey bars in Europe, only Belgian and Swiss chocolate,
she said "oh, you're so lucky!"
:D
@chili555 The only Hershey bar I ever had tasted a bit burnt...
(I was told it's standard)

user139252
I don't much like Hershey.

(and an acquired taste)

10:36 PM
@Fabby I would have said the same.

user139252
When I go for chocolate, I go for Godiva or Lindt

@Seth :D
@HeatherBrown Godiva is the best American chocolate there is!
>:-)

user139252
Lindt truffles though.... Sexinmymouth.

Lindt is excellent chocolate too...

10:38 PM
Let me look up if I can find a pic of a wrapper of Belgian Chocolate I used to bring to my colleagues in the US...

@Fabby That is an interesting conclusion.

For some or other reason this Belgian chocolate doesn't sell very well world wide!

user139252
....

user139252
I would love some Big Nuts in my mouth?

(I wonder why) :D :D:D
@HeatherBrown Indeed!

The siren synth I used the other day, BTW, for those who wanted it ^

It has a great taste! It just has an unfortunate product name for the anglo-saxon world...

user139252
Replace R1 and R3 with a couple of 100K pots to have control over the pitch and length

NE555s??? Timer chips?
Are they still used nowadays???

user139252
Yep.

user139252
10:42 PM
For teaching students about basic circuitry, yes.

I thought all of that would have been replaced by ARM chips nowadays...
@HeatherBrown Ah!

oooo, aren't those hard to find in the US now?

user139252
For annoying the hell out of coworkers.... of course.

They're still used in the real world aren't they?

I like annoying co-workers with big nuts better!
>:)
Thanks for the star!

user139252
10:44 PM
I think mine was star-worthy....

Well, I don't like pictures being posted without them being converted to in-line links straight afterwards...

user139252
Yes, of course that one.

user139252
You always know exactly what I mean.

:P
@HeatherBrown Electronics was ....
... mmmh 30 years ago?

user139252
I don't know, I'm not ancient.

10:49 PM
@HeatherBrown :D Yeah, Vorlons are Ancients... ;-)

user139252
Time to head home!

@Seth The only piece of football I ever saw that was actually any good! :-)
Good night @GeorgetheDev @chili555
Good night all.

@Fabby See you later.

@NathanOsman -----^ bug...
(he only responded on the second one)

That's not a bug.
He will only reply to goodbyes when no other @'s are present.

11:26 PM
yay
night fabby!

@Seth See you later.

hehe

The internet is so clean without ads...kind of boring actually.
thank you pi-hole

@NathanOsman Is the 2buntu UT app written in pure C++ or QML?

The 2buntu app is pure QML.

11:37 PM
so I just found out you can write Android apps in QML.

If you want an example of a C++/QML app, my other one (Wake It!) does that.

@NathanOsman oh that will come in handy some day.

@Seth You can, but then you have to bundle the QML runtime in your app.

thanks

...which is gigantic.

11:41 PM
ah. I think my friend and I are talking past each other then.

I am glad everyone cares about my newly found ad free lifestyle...

@daBoss Chrome?

@daBoss sorry, I've just been ad free so long I thought everyone lived ad free :P

11:45 PM
except I took it one step further and changed the DNS on my router, so it blocks ads on my ENTIRE network, every device...

I thought you were referring to Chrome blocking Flash ads.

even ad-supported mobile aps...
are now ad free,,,
free...

Ooo, nice use for a pi

Nice one, but I heard the pi chokes on many concurrent connections... so why not just static DNS black-holing on the router proper?

@hbdgaf: or run it on your preferred home server platform ;p

11:51 PM
or that.

I finally have a couple of docker instances doing what I want. Wish LXD had networking option support.

heck. In theory someone crazy enough could set this up on an external server, people count point at it for DNS and... bingo.
