zetterI am writing a script to modify settings on my Ubuntu server. I have the following line in it: sudo sed 's/PasswordAuthentication yes/PasswordAuthentication no/' /etc/ssh/sshd_config The problem is that the change will not remain. Unfortunately I don't think I'll have enough time to actually get my scope ready in time :(
I'm not good enough with C++ yet
What is it, 20 days left?
Maybe I can quick finish up the C++ book I have and make the scope ... JSON data isn't that hard to do.

user139252
So, I had my students build a missing pulse detector with two 555s... then had them modify it into a siren synthesizer. I have hidden this siren synthesizer in a co-worker's desk. :D

@Pandya planned obsolescence is still a thing though.

@Seth what? (I didn't understand what you want to say)

Q: Setting up OpenSSH to use rhosts?

Baard KopperudI rent a couple of VPSs running latest Ubuntu, both with OpenSSH. I'd like to try password-less login using .rhosts/.shosts. I know this is not recommended, and that it's better to use public-key authentication... I just want to test it and know how to set it up. I want to log-in to my server/...

2:20 PM
Unfortunately my speaking language isn't English :P

@Pandya The image said "no more planned obsolescence", but that is still a thing in the Linux world.
Releases go EoL same as Windows.
So I'm not really sure what the image meant by "no more planned obsolescence"

Well, my dad's old XP box didn't get the message about being obsolete
Only difference tho, linux upgrades are generally free

@JourneymanGeek ya

2:36 PM
@Pandya Agree, but company's choice.

user139252
@blade19899 Do what I used to when my company forced Windows on me: Install Ubuntu on a high capacity USB and boot from that.

Running Debian in a VirtualBox though. FOSS For life! :D
@HeatherBrown Also a good idea! ;P

user139252
FLOSS for life! Two times a day, at least.

user139252
I hid it in a rarely used supply cabinet right next to his desk, so it's just the faintest noise when you are in the area.

2:44 PM
lol
my company is primarily linux with some macs
windows boxen are red headed stepchildren
I do wish we'd use something more modern than centos 6 tho

@HeatherBrown hahaha, I'm going to use that.

@JourneymanGeek Debian?

@blade19899: even!
Well and gnome3
which greatly annoys me

user139252
If you know of an easy way for me to draw up a circuit diagram and send it to you, I'll show you how I made them do it. It's just two 555 chips, two capacitors, a speaker, a 9V battery, and a couple of potentiometers.

@JourneymanGeek gnome does not really do it for me either. I can use it with a bunch of addon installed, but, why bother when others work better then gnome3 without addons.

2:52 PM
I mostly got used to it ;p

3:09 PM
@JourneymanGeek I should not confirm to the whim of a lesser ideology.

You give moderators work that should be handled by the community, and you waste flags you could have used otherwise.

@GeorgetheDev who is idek?

4:35 PM
Jack Tramiel (/trəˈmɛl/ trə-MEL; Polish: Idek Trzmiel; December 13, 1928 – April 8, 2012) was a Polish American businessman, best known for founding Commodore International. @A.B. I was looking at that QT question. Same problem. File does not exist. I think that *.run file has some problem

Good thing i brought my skateboard
@NikolaiDante Hey there, how's your Ubuntu doing ?

ahhh screw this I'm gonna dual boot

@Serg good thanks :)

Whatcha doing @AnubianNoob?

@AnubianNoob no more cygwin ?

your name makes using shorthand names sound bad >.>

6:46 PM
@Seth AnubianNoob is sheep in wolfs clothing here

@Seth haha
I'm running windows right now

@Serg You mean a wolf in sheep's clothing?
@AnubianNoob I know ;p
That's not a problem.

With a souped up almost-linux terminal

I'm actually running Windows too as I wait for my new computer to arrive.

@Seth whichever suits best
@AnubianNoob why not VMWare or VirtualBox ?

6:48 PM
@Serg well, this is a borrowed computer so I can't really install Ubuntu on it. That would be awkward xD
@AnubianNoob Dual booting sounds like a much better idea ;)

Might as well dual boot for general programming stuff, use windows for just android dev and gaming

You can do both of those things on Linux too!

I have a Debian VM, which I used to mess around with some huge C projects

I just started using VirtualBox. I got genymotion because I need one android app on my laptop, and Ubuntu 15.04 there

@Seth hmmm really? Lemme do some research...

6:50 PM
@AnubianNoob You can definitely do Android dev. I've done a little and @NathanOsman has.
Gaming is a little more tricky.

And genymotion works :D

A lot of games will run well, but not quite all.
yup!

I don't play very much

@AnubianNoob there's steam, theres adb, there's genymotion. You can do the same as on Windows and it doesn't piss you off as much
How of freakin earth i get advertisement on askubuntu ?
And in the chat ?

screenshot @Serg?

6:52 PM
Graphics drivers will be a pain for gaming though, switchable graphics is hardly supported on windows, forget linux...

browser plugin most likely.

So I can keep windows for that

@AnubianNoob Depends on the graphics.

@Seth closed it already. I have only facebook, ell.stackexchange.com, and support.microsoft.com open

I've never had a machine with switchable graphics, but I know people who have and sometimes (depending on the configuration) it works and sometimes it doesn't.

AGAIN
hold on guys, i need to log out
this is weird

This one was rendered at 1080p :P

> The Little Car That Could But Probably Shouldn't Have

Hmm quite a few games have linux support
Graphics drivers are questionable

but then again so do idiots...

user139252
@Serg I think you did something wrong, then.

Once cool thing about computers in my university is that once you log out everything is cleared - all your folders, data, etc.
@HeatherBrown not me, the lab tech who was logged
He watches socker a lot

It's not really cleared until you take a hammer to your drives

@AnubianNoob :O I've never thought about it like that before

so probably got adware on some socker site

user139252
7:01 PM
@Serg You either mean soccer or football. :P

futbol.

@Seth So if we're not thinking alike, then the only logical conclusion is that one of us is a genius and the other is an idiot...

@HeatherBrown soccer. . . damn spelling. I am engineering major, so dont be so harsh on my language skills
although i do speak chinese

user139252
Unless socker is some new sport, in which case I would like to know what happens in it.

socker is played with socks

Man I'm gonna have to have 2 installations of genymotion and Android and everything...
That sucks

@AnubianNoob why 2 ?

Because I can't really go around running my windows AS on linux
And I lose the really neat Slack for Windows desktop client

So get the Slack for Linux beta or ScudCloud ;)

hmmmm . . . .and there's no way to like . . .make iso image ?

@Seth Slack is awesome, I love it

user139252
I have to finish this essay I'm doing for my admissions to my doctorate....

What does "It's so Raven" mean ?
@HeatherBrown you're doing PhD ?

@Serg It was a show

7:05 PM
@GeorgetheDev What is it's so raven?

That's So Raven is an American supernatural teen sitcom television series. It debuted on the Disney Channel on January 17, 2003, and ended its run on November 10, 2007. The show had a spin-off series, Cory in the House. The series was nominated in 2005 and 2007 for Emmy Awards for Outstanding Children's Programming. The show was set in San Francisco and revolved around teenager Raven Baxter, played by Raven-Symoné, her friends Eddie (Orlando Brown) and Chelsea (Anneliese van der Pol), her family members; mother Tanya Baxter (T'Keyah Crystal Keymáh) father Victor Baxter (Rondell Sheridan) and brother...

@HeatherBrown give me a second

7:06 PM
Hrm.

user139252
I know what it is, but I guess that's not enough for the admissions department. They need to know HOW I know.

@GeorgetheDev define dictionary
FEATURE REQUUUUUUUUUUEST.

OK, maybe more than a second

Ok so I have a 500gb hard drive with 120 free and a 30gb ssd with 11 free...
Is it possible to install a linux distro on the second drive?
I tried it once and had bootloader issues (grub didn't show up in the main bootloader and I couldn't access the OS I just installed ;_;)
UEFI is a pain

user139252
Primary bootloader on the primary drive?

7:15 PM
@Seth It's not as easy as it sounds.
There aren't too many good free dictionary services out there.

@HeatherBrown Yeah, UEFI is the bootloader on the primary drive. Right now the secondary is only used for data. Is that what you were asking?

user139252
Primary operating system on the primary drive?

@HeatherBrown Windows? I'm still not sure what you're asking :P
@NathanOsman You don't need too many, you just need one ;)

user139252
@AnubianNoob Use EasyBCD to add an entry to the Windows bootloader that points to the Linux partition

OK, I am back
had to run back to my lab where i was assigned
no more lunch coverages

user139252
7:20 PM
HA! Found it! Essentials of Programming Languages by Daniel P. Friedman

Hmmm, I just got onto my database

Display manager time!

user139252
@Seth Good. Not "acceptable"

I'm totally using a tiled window manager

7:26 PM
@HeatherBrown Merriam Webster is just "acceptable"? heh.
I can understand if there is some limiting feature Nathan needs that they don't have, but I am a bit confused as there seem to be quite a few dictionary APIs out there.

Has anyone here used Awesome before?

I haven't :/

user139252
@AnubianNoob I've been Awesome before. Does that help?
2

@Seth Wiktionary I looked into but it was too difficult to parse.

user139252
@Serg Is it acceptable for me to make stuff up in an admissions essay?

user139252
7:29 PM
I have a real source, but I'm not sure what I'm putting is actually in the source.

@HeatherBrown Not really :/
@HeatherBrown Will they find out? Probably not. Will it help you? I hope you're not doing it if it isn't helping. Is it acceptable? This one's up to you.

user139252
It's helping me finish a 12-page paper in the 24 hours notice they gave me.

Hmm... this one might work.

> From experience: just be careful when switching to tiling wm, you may like them so much that seeing anything not-tiling will make you cringe.

user139252
@GeorgetheDev What do you get when you multiply 6 by 9?

user139252
7:46 PM
@AnubianNoob Also, I'm only doing it with this one source. The other 6 I cited, I actually read through. I just can't wait the week for the school to deliver me the one copy of this book they have...

Just do it :P

user139252
Already did, and submitted to the admissions committee :p.

user139252
Hopefully they accept me... It's not the same school I did my Bachelors/Masters programs at.
