@psimeson see if you can access the drive we fixed. That drive we fixed though might need a boot repair done on it if you want to try booting back to it.
@psimeson That is not a common item to go bad, but with heat inside a computer breaking down cables, etc, I could see that being a problem causing data corruption to happen.
@psimeson I remember a while ago when they had the iMacs that looked like the desk lamps, there was a problem booting the computer up with the cable that went up to the screen. It had nothing to do with the boot, but Apple suggested replacement, so I did.
@psimeson you can google search Mac SSD Drive diagnostics. A quick search and I found this: mashtips.com/ssd-tools-for-mac
@psimeson yeah, freeware for the Mac is hard to find. I would recommend keeping a good backup of the drive, and then formatting it and reinstalling it and see how it works. I am not using any SSD drives personally, so I might not know any good techniques at the moment.
@Terrance I can test if it's ssd or the cable now: I have a old HDD which I replaced with the ssd... but that hdd also has some problem.. if i can sort that problem using testdisk then i can try
I'm trying to ssh to another machine but my kinit is not working:
$ ssh nik@social-1-r.referens.sys.XXXXXXX.se
Permission denied (publickey,gssapi-keyex,gssapi-with-mic).
Kerberos is used for authentication and I was told that I must get I ticket. When I try it I get an error msg:
$ kinit -F ...
Hi I have a weird trouble with my Thunar File Manager 1.6.3... When I need to copy/cut a file I have to ctrl-c/x twice with the file selected instead of just once... any clues on how I should proceed debugging that? :)
I need to find the creation time of a file, when I read some article about this issue, all mentioned that there is no solution like Site1, Site2.
When I tried stat command it state Birth: -
So how can I find the creation time of a file?
@ByteCommander Depends on how the lockfile is dealt with. It may well not be accessed, the program might just check for its existence and that is not accessing the file.
@JourneymanGeek Probably. I'm pretty sure it is always safe to delete, really. It's only there to avoid having parallel apt instances. As long as you don't do that, it should be fine.
Really just curious, but if a user is removed "forcefully", his or her votes are undone. That is completely understandable.
What however if a user closes his or her account deliberately, are his or her down & upvotes reversed as well?
I was just presented with this as a Late Answers review. Screenshot in case it is removed:
It this a valid answer, or is it someone commenting? They're offering a solution (format first) but seem to be giving their own progress.
What should I have done with this? I skipped it.
Alot of times I'll see questions, often linked to by other duplicate questions (that are usually not actually duplicates, but that's a different issue) that are closed or locked after being marked as duplicate or for other reasons. There will be a few comments relating to the locking, but no answ...
I'm trying to save some work by editing multiple files with the same name located in different directories:
$ mkdir -p directory_{0..10}/results
How may I create files with the same name in all directories. For example,
$ vim/kwrite directory_*/results/output.txt
How can I copy a number of directories:
directory_01
directory_02
directory_03
to different directories
tmp_directory_01
tmp_directory_02
tmp_directory_03
where each tmp_directory_* directory has the same content(files and subdirectories) as directory_*. For example tmp_directory_01 will ha...
A few days ago Ubuntu's Software updater awaits user input (q to Quit). I have attached a screenshot with the problem. I think this is related with fake sync from Debian.
What does this mean and how to fix this ?
I remember playing with MS-DOS on the old computers in my middle school. And Norton Commander ! And Turbo Pascal in 9th grade or so ! Man , I wish I could play with it a gain
@Fabby @A.B. I need your advice guys. Particularly Fabby's. I'm still a college student ( actually engineering ) and ain't got no experience, but I do want to start somewhere in the IT field. How do i do it guys ? WHat would you suggest ?

@Serg: I've flagged up the comment as obsolete as it is really unclear what it is doing there... In fact it is the first time that I have ever actually flagged a comment! :D
Yet another awk script :) askubuntu.com/a/644176/295286 I'm trying to squeeze out at least some answers today. I've been a bit unproductive last couple of days.
@Terrance hi ! Yeah, I actually like that he's asking those questions. I've improved my awk skills significantly while practicing on his questions. And it gained me some rep ,too ;)
@Terrance Indeed. I've created my AU account specifically for the purpose of learning. I remember there has been a video on youtube where the guy was talking about how to become a developer or how to enter IT field or something like that. So the guy suggested joining StackExchange and working on real world problems that people ask about. That's how I got here :)
@Serg I have learned a TON here as well, and I have learned that there are also many ways to do things. It is always good to find as many ways as possible to come up with the answers. You have shown me great ways as well. :D
You know, it's like . . . amazing , how when I joined AU I was looking up to muru and chili and others, and I'm now at this level . Of course no where near them, but at least I can talk and learn from higher-rep and more experienced users. It's like . . . wow . . .I've come a long way since joining
and the fact that i can now pull out some scripts of my own . . . it's just . . . mind-blowing
@Serg I am still earning that rep. :) I don't mind constructive criticism from people. And it is good when someone finds a mistake that I may have put in. In my scripting, I use slashes on the echo lines for testing, but I forgot once in a post, and man did I get all sorts of grief for it.
@Terrance it's not even about mistakes. I tend to write something without fully understanding question, get some critique for it, then go back and edit it 150 times or so. It's natural, and I actually ask for criticism and reviews a lot, because I want to learn. And of course I can't give higher rep users a lot of competition, because they're more experienced, but the fact that I am even attempting to post something along their answer is what excites me
@Serg Yeah, that did happen to me once, but it was a commenter that told me I was way off base, but as it turned out, I wasn't off base. It was just that the person that wrote the answer was dead set that what they wrote was correct. One thing that I have learned from my years of being in the computer industry is to never assume. Always take your time and find out as much as you can before helping them. But I am with you, it really does get exciting to share your knowledge with others.
@kos Regarding your question askubuntu.com/q/640819/295286 . I haven't experienced this issue, since what I usually do is set up two newlines in my PS1 prompt, one before and one after my host+username. like so
PS1=' serg@ubuntu[$(pwd)] $ '
I'm pretty sure that's not what you're looking for, but i thought maybe you'll find it useful
@A.B. by the way , that question. Can you edit, /SYNTAX INTEGER/,/MAX-ACCESS/ to /SYNTAX/ && /INTEGER/,/MAX-ACCESS/ ? I forgot just that one little detail, so the code above and in the script dont match
Well... I have one of those external USB batteries. It provides (I think) up to 3 amps for each port. As long as you don't need data, you can plug any powered USB device in there and it should work.
Cool, but I was looking to drive something like this: newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA25V2XX9634 but from a battery. I could get it, then see what the adapter changes 110 in to before it hits the hub.
So IIRC, my battery was about $59 CDN. The "smart" USB port is 5V/2.4A and the "universal" USB port is 5V/4A. It has a 12,000 mAh capacity and runs at 3.7V. Model number is Anker 79AN7904.
Wait, now I'm wondering what would happen if I just made a cord that split off the data and power channels on to a Y-cable. One for the battery and one for the data...
I suppose I could test it on a pi, so if I fry something I'm only out about 20 bucks.
@NathanOsman It's not just for the pi. It's also so I can provide supplemental power to run an optical drive, USB-HDD, wireless, keyboard, and mouse on my laptop at the same time
all off one port... like a dummy, i broke one of the ports on that controller... and the other is on the opposite side of the
Well, mice and keyboards usually are fine with 100mA. Most wireless chips are either 100 mA or 500 mA. Though I find it odd that an optical drive could be 100% bus-powered.
Can't find it on the HDD though... probably similar, so it should just work if I use your or another decent battery along with a hub and a weird Y cable.
