How do you mount an ISO onto a stick for 15.04?

@ShyamalChandra do you mean make a bootable usb?

I just burn a cd ;)

i don't have time for that

well, it is the simplest way, usb's are more complicated...

12:43 AM
what are the steps?

don't know, i just use cds...
I think I used dd once to an external drive and it worked

Q: Any way to manually make a bootable USB from ISO?

Alex PoulosI've been using Unetbootin but it occasionally fails to create a bootable usb the way I need it to, especially with the newer versions. Is there a way I could extract the iso myself?

but, those should get you in the right direction, if not I would blame the computer for being too old or something wierd with uefi/bios and use a cd anyway... then go for the xubuntu/lubuntu alternate disks for really old computers

I used to do discs too but not every device around here has an optical drive anymore.

1:09 AM

@NathanOsman I have a usb optical drive as well ;)

@Mateo is it bus-powered or does it have a separate power supply?

It has two usb's, but I do have a bigger one that has a seperate power supply
basically an enclosed standard desktop drive on that one

so the small one is bus powered, but it needs to lines

@ParanoidPanda This hurts my German/English language feeling... >.<
Sounds like primary school...

user136984
11:40 AM
@ByteCommander: Yes, can you tell what he's actually asking?

Almost.
But there's command output missing.
And I'm not going to start translating this until everything is there.
I left him a comment to at least use google-translator and a dictionary, and to add the command.
Until that is provided, I voted it as unclear too.

user136984
@ByteCommander: What do you think of the Powerwolf album Blood of the Saints by the way?

Oh, I have that one on my shelf! It's great, just as all of them ;)
It was my first album of them btw.
And "Son of a wolf" was the first song I heard. Love from the first note. ;)

user136984
@ByteCommander: Yes, it's a great song, in fact I am listening to it right now! :D

\m/
Son of a wolf, when the fight is calling, son of a wolf, and the night has come...
Son of a wolf, can you hear me calling, hallelujah
Son of a wolf, can you see him dying, son of a wolf, when the night is dark...
Son of a wolf, can you hear them calling, hallelujah

@JourneymanGeek No metal lover?

More on the symphonic side I guess

Oh, Powerwolf is almost symphonic.
Maybe you like their album "Sacred symphony part II"...
They also use choirs, orchestras, church organs,... sometimes.
Besides, show me one singer with such a powerful voice as theirs.

The best album is?

I can't tell, I like them all! ;)

12:23 PM
=)
Ok, than which album should I hear ? =)

@A.B. What music types/genres do you like at the moment? The albums are all great, but have slightly different styles.

Uhm, hard to say

@A.B. Your current favourite songs or bands maybe?

12:45 PM
@A.B. The Powerwolf songs I personally like best are "Saturday Satan" (album Lupus Dei), "Son of a wolf" (Blood of the saints), "Lust for blood" (Preachers of the night) or their two newest pre-released singles "Armata strigoi" and "Army of the night" (Blessed & Possessed)
The album will come out on 10th July btw.

@ByteCommander Ok, I check the following albums: Bible Of The Beast, Blood Of The Saints and Lupus Dei =)

1:07 PM
Do whatever you feel like! Enjoy :D

Sounds good =)

Paranoid PandaI used to use the default gnome-terminal as my default Terminal, but because I want it to be see-through I have switched to the xfce4-terminal. @ParanoidPanda when does it start cutting? At what size of terminal? Would you consider just using a different terminal? Personally, I am a huge fan of terminator (gnome-terminator) and aterm (exceedingly lightweight). Both support transparency.
I also can't reproduce on xfce4-terminal:

3:16 PM
@Terdon Can I ask you a question about Perl?

Sure
@A.B. ^^

This answer. Is there a shorter way to replace and print a string with perl? askubuntu.com/a/644184/367165
This is my version
perl -ne 'if (/copy/) {$a=$_; $a =~ s/\s*([[:alpha:]]*).*/$1/g; printf "%s\n",$a}' foo

@A.B. Why are you using a variable? Why not work directly on $_? Also, you should get into the habit of never using $a in Perl. It's a special variable for sort and I've had very strange behavior when using both sort and $a in a script.

Ok

perl -ne 'if (/copy/) {s/\s*([[:alpha:]]*).*/$1/g; print}' foo
Or:
perl -ne 'if (/copy/) {s/\s*(\w*).*/$1/g; print}' foo
The s/// acts on the current line, $_, by default. There's no need for an intermediate variable.

Q: Why doesn't Perl's strictures complain about an undeclared $a?

planetpWhy is there no error issued by strict: use strict; $a = $a + 1;

I used to always use $a. Then, a perl update made it a global variable from sort and all sorts of scripts started giving me really weird bugs. It took me ages to figure out WTF was happening.

YitzchakI hope my question isn't too trivial, but I've never actually needed to know this before. Nice one @Mateo

@Serg I'm not chilling - I'm melting. It's stupidly hot here :P
@RPiAwesomeness Wait - my name is on there.

@NathanOsman Yeah, I tagged you. The instructions I was following said it was a good idea to tag people so they can confirm that the patch is good.
At least, that's what I thought it was saying :P

That patch... is big...

Uh oh :P
Where'd I mess up?

7:38 PM
I don't mean to say anything is wrong.

Wait...wat. I only change 2 characters...
No, something is definitely wrong.
I only removed 4 characters from a single file.

The patch shows that you added a bunch of changes.

Bother it all.
Oh curses. And I was having such a grand old time thinking I had helped.
Can I remove a suggested patch?

Yup.

Well, I think I need to do that.
I was having issues with packages, debduild, and stuff - maybe my messing around with that messed with the stuff. How do I do that?

Awesome. Thank you.
Now that I have the proper setup...let's try this again...
@NathanOsman Is there any way to see what changes were made? Like git's git status?

Just don't feel bad about the confusion - debuild, sbuild, Debian packaging in general - those are really advanced topics.
@RPiAwesomeness If you've checked out a branch from Bazaar, then bzr diff should show a diff.

Awesome.
Let's see if I can't do this correctly this time

And, of course, there is bzr status too :P

Oh :P facepalm
@NathanOsman Do you know if there's a proper way to name a patch? I just started it with 99 (since tutorial did) and then tacked on fix-for-BUGNUMBER.

7:51 PM
Is this a Debian patch? (You've got the .orig.tar.gz with the source and you're applying a patch on top of that?)
If so, it's easier to use quilt.

Er, maybe? I'm following these instructions

Okay, so is this a package that is hosted on Launchpad or somewhere else?
If it's hosted on Launchpad, you can just propose a merge.

I believe it's on Launchpad.

Okay, hmm... I'm not sure.

phew, that was a close one:

7:54 PM
I usually package things outside of LP so it's a choice between contacting the people upstream with a patch or just applying a patch from the Debian packaging. The preference is always to get it patched upstream.
@Mateo \o/

thought I messed it up for sure

@NathanOsman So, how would you suggest I do this?

This probably goes beyond my knowledge :(

8:07 PM
@NathanOsman Quilt is useful.
Wow

Yeah, it's fun once you get the hang of it.

I've got a jar file which I wan to decompile and find out as much about its origin as possible, how can this be done?

@ParanoidPanda I think you can right-click it and open it in archive manager and then look at the various files

user136984
@RPiAwesomeness: Yes, but how can I extract information from it that the compiler may have put in with it?

user136984
Like some put IP address information in, author, file path of the original files...

@ParanoidPanda No idea.

user136984
You know anyone who might know? :)

8:44 PM
Nope :(

@ParanoidPanda tried hexdump -c inputfile.jar ?

@Serg I need one more review ;)

@A.B. coming :)
Anybody here knows Toto Cutugno ?

@A.B. I was actually working in smothering heat... From 10:00 to 22:00 in one shift with one shower over lunch! (You can probably smell me right through them interwebitubes! ;-))

@Fabby they can ship to EU

@Serg Yes..
@Mateo Do you have my e-mail?
@Serg Yes! ;-)

@Serg what's that?

@A.B. it's an italian singer
His most famous song is L'italiano

@Serg And about the experience question:

8:51 PM
Very popular in ex-Soviet Countries

@NathanOsman Well, let's hope this new patch works. It's still making changes to 20 different files. Something tells me that my push is applying a patch that hadn't been applied to the trusty version of the package (if that makes sense.)

@Serg Back in my time it was easy: I got hired as a BASIC programmer because I could program in Pascal and Assembler and C... (and I impressed the lead programmer by being able to answer all of his questions just by having read their BASIC manual for 2 weeks)

@Fabby no, I see you on github and stuff, nathan has it thought right?

@Serg Nowadays, I would say: Volunteer, write some open source things and keep on looking for a job...

@A.B. cool retro term ! Holly balls , I love that program ! I've got it on my other laptop back in the states. I occasionally put it on full screen and I love that noise effect !

@Mateo Yes, he does...
There! That should do it too!

I think I got it, testing

@Fabby Yeah . . . I probably won't impress anyone nowadays with one class in C and one in Java , but volunteering is a good idea.

8:58 PM
@Serg I've been looking for a job for 3 months now and still haven't landed anything...

I just need at least some way of breaking into the field. Especially, since my resume, (lets be honest), sucks

I'm too good and that scares people... ;-)

^--- the original Need for Speed game running on my Android phone

@Serg Send it to me... You must have my e-mail address by now and I'll up-market it...

@Fabby we have ubuntu in common :0

9:00 PM
@Fabby " You're overqualified " , sorry but I don't understand how that makes any sense o.O What kind of sick HR person came up with this idea ?

I do get phone calls but after the first F2F interview lots of people are scared...

@NathanOsman is it playable?

I get lots of "Doesn't fit our culture"... >:)

@Fabby I don't have neither resume nor your email right now, but let's talk about it in two three days, when i get back to the states

@NathanOsman lol

9:00 PM
Why lol?

@Serg It's true: If I would have landed a low-level job, I would have continued looking for something decent...

@NathanOsman Actually...I don't know
@Mateo GASP! It's a Mateo face!

lol, I look a lot different now, have a goatee longer hair...

@Mateo Al your base belong to us... ;-)

@NathanOsman Yeah...turns out that bug I was having issues with weird diffs with? It's been fixed upstream :P

9:06 PM
sweet

@Serg so that's why they don't hire overqualified people...
@Mateo :-)
Warn me so I can flag the P.O. Box as well!

flag the p.o.?
oh, just tell you when they say it will ship?

@Fabby >.< probably that makes some people diminish their skills on the resume
That L'italiano song now stuck in my head

That's what I'm going to do if I haven't found anything by 1 August...
@Serg O_O It's not that good! :P
@Mateo Indeed!
@Mateo (in another window following up on my job mails...) Ping me if you want a quick answer...

@Fabby well, i found the translation of the song, and indeed the lyrics aren't so special, but that tune and chorus are so catchy ^_^

9:13 PM
@Fabby ;)

@Serg You should look up the lyrics to this one (and the translation)
(and then you understand why she's dresses like she is)
(And it's better (even dirtier) in Italian anyway...)

@Fabby well, my interwebs here don't let me watch youtubes, but i am looking up mp3 and lyrics for download right now :)

@Fabby is the 4 digit number the zip

@Serg Raffaella Carrà - A far l'amore comincia tu
@Mateo yes.
Bus = box
@Serg Are you actively looking for a job?

@Fabby well . . . I've got a job at university. Official title is Lab Technician but that's just a way of saying "help desk guy". I'm 25 ( since yesterday ) , still haven't graduated college, and . . .i'm starting to think that i need to break out somewhere. I mean, college goes slow and painful, so i need to get going with job hunting. Besides, after you graduate, everyone asks if you have experience. All the entry level jobs ask for experience
@Fabby that's not to say i hate that job. Quite the opposite. I love it ! But . . .it's not serious. I need to start somewhere serious

9:24 PM
@Serg Send me your CV...

@Fabby like, I said, i don't have anything in this laptop. I can scratch up a simple text file in 10 mins or so and send you now, if that's ok

So you don't have one?
I can send you mine... You can use that as a template...

nope. I've a resume back in the laptop in the states, but nothing here

Well, when you get back, send it to me!
:P
>:) I've spiced up quite a few CVs and those people have got good responses out of it!

As soon as I get home, I'll send it :)

9:27 PM
(as I've hired people, I know what most managers look for in a CV)
I'll make you look like a dynamic and future-proof hire instead of the decrepit one you really are! :D ;-) >:)

@Fabby sent ;) Ill send another e-mail if they send a tracking update, but the buy page said a week. Thank you!

Sorry, couldn't resit that one! Q:)

@Fabby Sounds good ! I guess it's good to have Vorlon friends ;)
Basically my job experience: one month at college bookstore, year and half in vietnamese restaurant (delivery, bus boy, cashier - all at the same time ), and so far just one spring semester as Lab Technician
Education: high school diploma, and still doing electrical engineering degree at uni

@Mateo I'll keep you posted. Flagging P.O. Box now...

Experience . . . C programming class ( introductory, we've gone as far as structures and unions, and file i-o ), microcontrollers class, java class (introductory, everything in console, no gui, no object oriented programming , that's next )
Oh, and 8,721 rep on askubuntu.com :D

9:32 PM
@Mateo (Though I don't really know where to put the nickname now: in the nick-name field or in the real name field) ;-)

oh because I go by mateo online ;P
the address has my real name, lol

@Mateo Flagged! (I mean; the P.O. box!) ;-)

@Serg When's your graduation date?

@Fabby -_-' i don't know. I still need to complete bunch of classes. Approximately need 2 more years

user136984
9:41 PM
@Serg I have tried both of those, but the output is slightly unreadable, how would I get the information that I need from the hexdump?

that Raffaella Carra song has a catchy tune ,too. :D #istart2likeitalianmusic
@ParanoidPanda what exactly you imagine the output like ?

user136984
@Serg: Well, I don't know... But I just need to get as much info on it that I can, and the hexdump doesn't really give me that information, just bits and pieces of it...

@ParanoidPanda askubuntu.com/q/272189/295286 , maybe ?

@Serg Internship would be good to get experience as well then...
The pay's not very good though!

@Fabby yup, i know. I just need experience somewhere, to put something on resume

9:47 PM

then the cool part is you can verify you are the same person as your github user, by putting a proof up in a gist there
