@psimeson yes. I wish I was recovering a partition right now so I could do the step by step with you. When you load it from the back up, there will be an option at the bottom to Write the changes to the drive which should replace the GPT with the backup

here's the screenshot of what I get after hitting analyze: imgur.com/nnTGEva

@psimeson Yes, it is Quick Search you want to do.

@terrance this is what i get after quick search : imgur.com/H6Va883

@psimeson Continue. Those are the ones that cannot be recovered. That can happen. We need to see what the next screen shows.

7:09 PM
@Terrance this is what i got: imgur.com/gmROsLl

^ Don't have a vast knowledge of Linux, so, could anyone verify that? ^

@psimeson I believe you need to select the second one down

@Terrance i did that and I got this : imgur.com/sRWbYs9

@psimeson as long as we don't write anything yet to the drive, we can see what we can find by selecting different partitions or loading backups.

@Terrance i did that and I got this : imgur.com/sRWbYs9 .. Do you want me to do `Deeper Search`?

7:13 PM
@psimeson OK, that is the boot, we don't want to write that one. Press ESC to go back one, and select the next one down.

this what I got with next one: Disk /dev/sdc - 250 GB / 232 GiB - CHS 30401 255 63

Partition Start End Size in sectors

1 P EFI System 40 409639 409600 [EFI]

@psimeson after you analyze, press L to load the backup

do you have teamviewer ?

I don't, but let me install it.

@Terrance ok

Just saying xD

@psimeson OK, I have it now

@Terrance I want to send you my teamviewer id and password but I don't want to post here... can I email you?

@psimeson yeah, at kato223@gmail.com

@Terrance done

Hello

@blade19899 Yesterday I forgot to upvote your SU question after you accepted it...

Now I can only hope I earn no enemies..... :P

@blade19899 Corrected today!!! ;-)
@Terrance I have no enemies...

@Fabby :D

@Fabby No problem. Up votes is like the third thing I want out of stackexchange!

7:43 PM
@Terrance I've outlived all the SOBs!!! ;-)

@Fabby THank you!

Is this an appropriate place for a quick question?

@CaptainMan Just post the link you your question here and we'll have a look! :-)

@Fabby That is what I am hoping for! ;)

@Terrance >:)

7:44 PM
a smoke brb

I don't know if it's good enough for the site.

@blade19899 Well, if it was reverse-engineered using a clean room...
Then YES! It's legal!
(That's how the IBM PC clones came to be!)
Back when I was a kid and dinosaurs still roamed the Earth...
@CaptainMan If it's not good enough for the site,

I saw a post on Google Plus, that had a screenshot showing off Ubuntu with an app, in that app, you could select the software you would like to install, I think it was to install the lastest version via ppa, like vlc. But, can't find that post on my Google Plus feed! Anybody saw this?

@CaptainMan it's definitely not good enough for the chat room...

I'm trying to use the "Disks" tool on the live usb to see if there's any issues with my hard drive, but it says "SMART is not supported", is that because it's in RAID?

7:47 PM
@CaptainMan Definitely good enough for the site!

@CaptainMan We do not bite . . . . sometimes

@Fabby Whats funny is, that that is my bios.7z xD. I posted the same pcsx2 tutorial in 2013. I still have the same bios.7z. extracted both, they are exactly the same xD

:)

@CaptainMan We'll need more information, so post a question and give all the information you have!
@blade19899 :D

@CaptainMan a Java question? :)

7:49 PM
I will make a question

@Fabby Since I found out they needed to be legal BIOS's I deleted it from my server.

wise man

Thanks!

@CaptainMan Good man...
@CaptainMan then come back and drop the link here!

@Fabby wise != good
???

7:49 PM
can I crop a screenshot with the live usb? lol

Yes!

@Fabby :P
YES SIR
YOU CAN

@A.B. Hold up your left hand and count out loud how old you are!

Q: Disks utility says SMART is not supported, is there a workaround or aother way to troubleshoot?

Captain ManI am using the Live USB to troubleshoot a troublesome hard drive. I want to run the self-test but as you can see in the image below that it says "SMART is not supported" and because of this I can't run the test. Is it because it's in Raid configuration? Is there a way to make is so SMART is s...

there :)

8:07 PM
FOUND IT!!!!!

@Fabby its awesome ^
These guys are just awesome!

I'm going to follow that after ubuntu install
Wish me luck! ;)

8:37 PM
guys, for what it is worth I may have found the issue :) I found a benchmark option and my troublesome harddrive has a read speed of 6MB/s write of 3MB/s. To put it into perspective a different hard drive (working fine) was around 80MB/s

Sounds like it's dying.

I have had it since 2010... lol

@MadhavNikam: I'm very sorry for the late reply. I was traveling these days and very busy. I'm very happy you successfully accomplished it. If do you have any question, don't doubt to ask.

9:00 PM
Here's the oldest drive I have in my system: i.imgur.com/s8u33Bj.jpg

jrg
@NathanOsman when is ubuntu membership?!

@jrg: In 52 minutes.

jrg
please tell me i didn't miss it.
oh good.

jrg
phew. time to get home.
had a brief moment of PANNICCCC
BTW, best investment I've made in my technological life in a very, very long time: A kindle with a backlight.
I highly recommend it to anyone who doesn't get enough reading done. The backlight makes almost any environment decent for reading.

9:10 PM
I have mixed feelings about that. On the one hand, it does enable easy reading in the dark. On the other hand, they don't make the Kindle Touch anymore, so I'd be hesitant to replace mine.

jrg
What was special about the Touch?
the paperwhite that I just got is touch-based.

It's really really easy to navigate.
@jrg Really?

jrg
@NathanOsman yeah. the new paperwhite (A week ago?) has a touchscreen.

I thought they only made Kindles with physical buttons nowadays.
In that case, cool!

jrg
No, I think they stopped making them with buttons.
I've got a power button. That's it.
same form factor as my old kindle that I destroyed (It's surprisingly durable, but doesn't survive a drop in my backpack from 30 feet)

9:12 PM
Then they just started making regular tablets with the fire line

The one other nice thing about my Kindle is that it has really powerful stereo speakers on the back and can play MP3s.
Do newer Kindles still do that?

The new ones are basically tablets with ads on the lock screen amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00HCNHDN0/…

That wouldn't be what I would want. If I'm going to watch a video, I'll use my phone. If I want to read a book, I prefer the e-ink display.

Yeah, kindof pointless
Unless you are really into all the prime stuff, ever see their instructions for installing prime video on Android?

Nope.

9:23 PM
They have you turn off security to install their store, to install another app from that store

They don't even really have that good of a selection.

@psimeson Are you still here?

The family has a sub, so I looked at the instructions, and was like

Most of the reason why the Amazon FirePhone was a flop is because of their lack of apps in the app store.

And they are all pay, they don't like freemimum
I kindof like that Ubuntu shead their services before doing the phone, and the coded in support to allow other stores
Just imagine having an amazon video store on Ubuntu touch - and it being just fine
So small steps, but having the phone tied to specific sets of services is something going wrong with Android...

9:39 PM
Holy god , that was horrible

@NathanOsman ooo, is your name in the hat this time around?

It is indeed!

Cool!
@Serg what happened?

Big argument with my mom. She shouldn't drink whiskey. Grandma has high blood pressure after all the jazz

Ah

9:44 PM
^ Picked up a copy of Linux Voice at Barnes & Noble \o/
Wish a sub didn't cost so much though :(

Two days before leaving Ukraine. Everything was fine. But today she talked to her cousin about the current generation of kids and how everyone is lazy and bad, so after cousin left we started drinking whiskey. I couldn't have anticipated she's gonna start an argument.

Would cost me ~$150 to get a physical 12 month subscription :(

@RPiAwesomeness yummy book :D

@Serg It's a magazine :D

Oh

@RPiAwesomeness steep

No kidding :P

How many pages?

Per issue?
Or the one I have?

Man I feel bad about grandma now. Me and mom always have stupid arguments over nothing. I'm coming back to Denver and I ain't touching no alcohol or smokes. I'm so done.

9:50 PM
Yeah, take a pic of it sideways next to a pencil

I mean, I understand why, they're a small business that prints the issues & then has to ship them overseas, but it's still more than I can afford :(
@Mateo Just a tad smaller than a regular 2B pencil.
116 pages counting cover & back
Digital subscription is less @ ~$56 for 12 months.

Meeting starts in 10 minutes on #ubuntu-meeting on Freenode.

@NathanOsman What for?

My Ubuntu membership application.

Oh!
Are we allowed to sit in?
Obviously, not talking

10:01 PM
Yup.
You can sit in and there is a designated time to say something if you wish.

Cool! Just joined :)

It's a couple minutes late starting.

That's fine, I'm working on a blog post anyways.
Good luck @NathanOsman! :)

Thanks :)

I just wanted to say Nathan is awesome and the amount of virtual machines he has is astonishing. :3 go get em Nathan ! You got this !

Yeah, I guess they forgot to ask :P

Yup that was me @RPiAwesomeness

10:22 PM
@Seth Kewl.

Congrats @NathanOsman!

Thanks!

@blade: I'm too tired to read this today... I'll be looking at awesome tomorrow or so...
@NathanOsman Any kind of substantial contribution....
mmmh... Did you buy your way in??? ;-)
(Congrats! All that hard work finally paid off...)

@Fabby Oh no, he only asked question Numero Uno on AU and served as mod pro tempor and has written a few Ubuntu mobile apps and is totally cool and is very helpful

jrg
10:28 PM
YAYAYYYAYAYAYAYA PARTY!

@RPiAwesomeness If what I have written above would have been the truth, I wouldn't have been able to make it into a joke...

@Fabby I was saying what a I did sarcastically ;)

jrg
And this is the part where I strongly encourage all of you to go for ubuntu membership if you can. :-)

In this case: irony: saying the opposite of what you mean to have a humorous effect, you cretin! ;-)
@RPiAwesomeness :D
Slow chat...

jrg
10:29 PM
Alright enough celebrations.

@jrg Noooo

jrg
BACK TO WORK ALL. scowl ;-)

I refuse to reload this page!

@jrg not me... Compared to Nathan I'm a lowly worm!

jrg
@Fabby do it! worse they can say is "no"

10:30 PM
@jrg Hah, I have absolutely nothing to my name that would make them consider me for Ubuntu Membership. Besides, I'm a minor :P

jrg
You are in the top 2% of users by reputation.
that right there is a huge thing.

o.O
I am...?
How the heck did I manage that?
Gracious me.

@jrg Me? Top 1‰...

jrg
I think you have more rep than I did at the time I applied.
I think I had just hit 2K or so.

#325. Man, I guess I got up farther than I thought!
Haven't been terribly busy as of late though, mainly in chat :P

10:33 PM
@RPiAwesomeness Yeah, you can totally pass for an adult!
(here, don't try bars...)

@jrg Are there age restrictions?

;-) :D

jrg
@RPiAwesomeness are you over 13?

@RPiAwesomeness and don't forget your interest in Python programming :)

jrg
right?

10:34 PM
I am, yes.

jrg
then you're all set.

Oh, cool!

jrg
heck, i became a mod at 16(?)
need to check

@RPiAwesomeness: ...and I will write an awesome testimonial for you.

Though, I'm fairly certain you had contributed more to Ubuntu than I had ;)
Most of the stuff I've done has absolutely nothing to do with Ubuntu other than that I developed it on Ubuntu.
@NathanOsman Thank you :)

10:35 PM
That speaks volumes to its use as a development platform :P

@NathanOsman Indeed it does. Much easier than Windows at least.

^--- this

jrg
I was 15 and a few months @RPiAwesomeness.

And I can say that, because I spent half of my developing life thus far programming in Just BASIC, Visual BASIC, and Python on Windows
@jrg Wow
Impressive!
Better than me :)
Though I don't think I would make a very good mod :P
Don't know nearly enough about Ubuntu

@RPiAwesomeness You would make a great mod!

jrg
10:38 PM
Trying to find my membership date...

more laid back and less stuck up then the mods we currently have

jrg
it was def before the election though.

:D :D :D

Shoot...now I feel like I'm fishing for compliments.
/me is now hiding from embarrassment

jrg
So my advice to you is... just go for it, if you want it. :-)

10:38 PM
@RPiAwesomeness Don't be shy: it's not useful for anything!

(especially dating girls!)

I totally would love to be an Ubuntu member, but I feel that I would need to have contributed just a bit more before trying.

jrg
You Canadians are weird @NathanOsman.

My problem is finding projects I can get involved in.

10:39 PM
@NathanOsman especially the comments!

@NathanOsman xD

@RPiAwesomeness I'm applying now... :P

jrg
@RPiAwesomeness you at least wrote code that runs on Ubuntu desktop. Most of mine at the time (still is) is stuff that runs on the server.

@jrg True.
I'll consider it more heavily once I finish my email client, then I'll feel like I actually made a thing that is useful on the Ubuntu desktop.
g2g. Dinner time :)

jrg
I tried writing an email client! Couldn't handle the multithreading properly. Gave up after a few weeks.

10:46 PM
@NathanOsman awesome

10:59 PM
@Terrance It didn't work when I connect to my mac

Nah, too much work... I'll keep on using my AU flair on Linkedin...

What has always stopped me was the requirement for substantial contributions in two areas. I've never had the time for much more than AU :(
(Although I try)

11:17 PM
@jrg Did you ever figure out how old you were when you applied? (while we're at it, are you a member?)

@Seth Ah! So you don't upgrade your friends' XP systems to lubuntu???
(that's a second area)

I wonder if my blog would count...
I could at least include it.
My problem is finding a project that I can actually help in with my experience.
Does anyone know where I can get access to the logs for apt-get update? They don't seem to be stored in the /var/log/apt/ directory like the rest of the apt-get logs.

@RPiAwesomeness Just join the bug squad or quality team. They're super nice and will help you get going.

@Seth How would I do that?

@Fabby they'd kill me if I tried :(

11:24 PM
@Seth I've converted less then 10 so far, but everyone is very impressed that their old computers can get a second life and become very fast again! ;-)

@RPiAwesomeness community.ubuntu.com look under quality
@Fabby Most people, when they hear me say Linux, want to run for their lives. MS has done a good marketing campaign I guess..
@RPiAwesomeness doubt those are logged. Why do you need them?

@Seth I'm writing a blog post about a bug I had with apt-get and pub keys and I need the error messages from apt-get update :P

I say: "Do you want your kid to use your old computer and I'll install everything they need to be able to use it as a school computer and make them look cool too?"
and to the kids that are >12 I give them an admin password and show them the software center...

@Fabby Was planning on doing that with my family's old school laptop ... but then the motherboard went and conked out :P

All of them are very impressed. (parents and kids alike)
And parents get the same free software too if they are strapped for cash and can't afford commercial...

11:29 PM
@RPiAwesomeness ahh

Yup :P

One even asked to get Ubuntu too (but she got the Unity version instead of lubuntu... She was even more impressed afterwards) Kiddo not so...

Be me . . . Installed xubuntu on mom's coworker's laptop. Tell her how to use it. Second week passes - she says "yeah, it's been working great but I still bought a new one" . Imconfused.png

@Serg Yeah... That happens too!
I had one who asked granny for an Apple MacBook...
He asked me to install CD-ripping software on that one too as he's on a DJ-course...
I told him to go to the Apple store to first buy a CD player...
:D

11:45 PM
Can anyone tell me (a Google Music subscriber) why I would want to switch to Apple Music?

Nope :P I see absolutely no reason to. I'm definitely not switching from Spotify.
No free tier!

@NathanOsman cuz you got money to waste?
and gratz on the membership

@Rinzwind I don't.
@Rinzwind ...and thanks :)
