Q: Remove branding from custom kernel

KlinuI have an assignment to build a custom kernel which removes all the drivers/plugins that are not needed and also remove any traces that it is Ubuntu's. Basically, my teacher wants us to strip it down to the bare-bones where we can still install/add plugins if needed afterwards. I followed this...

@ByteCommander Do you have a usb stick with a truecrypt container?

I remember to have created one long time ago, but I think I never used it. Why do you ask?

I need a test user =) My script/project is 6 years old.

A: Simple udev rule does not work

A.B.Use a rule with UUID matching: KERNEL=="sd??", ENV{ID_FS_UUID}=="<the_uuid>", RUN+="/bin/mkdir /tmp/folder1" get the UUID with the command below udevadm info /dev/<usb_stick_partition> | grep ID_FS_UUID= Example $ udevadm info /dev/sda1 | grep ID_FS_UUID= E: ID_FS_UUID=c44a008d-58b2-467d-8...

Nah, sorry. I would have to find it first... And then I'd need TrueCrypt for Ubuntu etc etc...

Q: Can people please leave comments when they downvote questions and answers

mark kirbyThis is more of a request than a question, but if people down vote questions or answers could you please leave a comment in the appropriate place. The point of the voting system is so good q/a can be easily spotted and bad q/a can be improved but if you don't tell people why you down voted them ...

@muru: And I've only been around for less then a year... I'm going to continue to provide identical comments to identical problems! ;-)
@blade19899 25 years ago I was told: "Don't become a programmer: in 25 years time, computers will be programming themselves!"
Yeah, sure!

@Fabby lol.

@Fabby When was it again when the IBM chief stated that the world has a need for maybe 4 or 5 computers?

> Although Watson is well known for his alleged 1943 statement, "I think there is a world market for maybe five computers", there is scant evidence he made it.

1943 o.O SO early...
Was the Z3 even invented then?

Thomas John Watson Sr. (February 17, 1874 – June 19, 1956) was an American businessman. He served as the chairman and CEO of International Business Machines (IBM) and oversaw the company's growth into an international force from 1914 to 1956. Watson developed IBM's distinctive management style and corporate culture, and turned the company into a highly-effective selling organization, based largely on punched card tabulating machines. A leading self-made industrialist, he was one of the richest men of his time and was called the world's greatest salesman when he died in 1956. == Early life and... ==
Its not sure if he actually said that!

@ByteCommander Yup...

@A.B. How long have you been using Linux?
@ByteCommander :D

@Fabby since 1998

Favour returned...
@A.B. I used RHEL until that time to build firewalls, but then we got bought by a public company and I had to switch to Microsoft Proxy server... (shudder)
Then a bit of AIX and HP UX and Tru64, then nothing at all and since 1,5 years: Ubuntu...

Thanks. I'm slowly recovering my reputation gain rate...
Seems like new Ubuntu releases lower my rep harvesting speed, so now it could grow again.

@ByteCommander >:)
@ByteCommander @A.B. has been here for only 5 months and he'll get to 15K before me...

11:14 AM
You remember the time when both me and him were equal at about 3k?
Now I'm at 3.6k... And that was months ago.

>:)
Indeed! The two Germans starting out as newbies...

@Fabby Mein Hut, der hat drei Ecken... Is something like that in English?

@A.B. Yup. That's English for "I don't speak German"
;-)
Or do you mean the other way around?

o_O the other way

"My taylor is rich" is what I've heard in Belgium...
(means: I don't speak English...)

Oli

@Oli Probably? Someone who sows up clothes?
(sorry: the damnation of too many languages)

Oli
@Fabby In your defence, the name "Taylor" means "somebody who is a tailor". No idea how that mess happened but that's language for you ;)

:D Yeah! Taylorism! Damn! I should have known that was a proper name. :/

Q: How do I get "duplicate" local addresses on different interfaces?

Anthony HuntI have two network interfaces(a wireless and an USB dongle) attached to an Ubuntu server and both get the same local IP address. Is there any reason for this or a way to force it assign distinct IP addresses? Below is the output from ip addr(the mac is partially masked): 4: wlan0: <BROADCAST,MU...

But, does it only print the content of the email, or also the attachments?

@JoshuaRobison What do you see when you try to wget it? That might explain things.

oli, thanks ill try it
oli its in japanese on my computer so i can only translate but
it says the connectioon was reset ... trying to read the header but it was refused
i am using opendns by the way, i wonder if that is related

@blade19899 Should I edit some more or are you going to accept it like it is?

@JoshuaRobison Run this:
That way, the output will be in English and we can understand it.

then it keeps repeating this

Weird. Looks like its specific to you. Do you have a proxy set up or something?
Though I don't think a proxy could cause that.

opendns

@Fabby I'll accept it!

@JoshuaRobison Looks like it's blocked for some reason. Odd.

@blade19899 Thanks!

@JoshuaRobison That isn't a proxy, that's resolving the domain to an IP (correctly here based on your wget output)

I've got a python script running on my pi at 100% cpu 24/7. How long until the cpu burns out?

with water cooling?

@DonaldBrown Raspberry Pi?

user139252
Yes. Runing Snappy core, so still Ubuntu centered question :p

user139252
No water cooling. Basic heatsink though.

@DonaldBrown I have no idea? Never tried that out! xD
By the size of the Raspberry Pi, I don't think it could handle it for a long period of time.
Are you just trying to break it?

user139252
2:16 PM
No, I'm working on teaching students how to do home automation with a Pi, but having a Python script constantly wait for some type of input before controlling a pin seems to push it to 100% cpu

o_O
seems to be a bad style =)

user139252
Yeah, haven't decided on a better way to do it yet

user139252
Probably with a small shell script instead of python

user139252
That would work, actually.

@DonaldBrown busy waiting?

user139252
2:18 PM
Or busy waiting.

No, I meant if you'e using busy waiting! :D

user139252
Because it hasn't been about 3 years since I last used Python, and I totally remembered that busy waiting was applicable here.

user139252
cough

Oli
@DonaldBrown Interrupts (what a pin state change is) are hard to do right. Sounds like you were looping hard around the state. That's going to use significant CPU.

user139252
Yeah, I already fixed it.

user139252
2:22 PM
Down to....

Oli
There is a RPi.GPIO library that has its own wait... functions. Oh ok,

user139252
7% CPU usage while waiting around!

user139252
Yay!

user139252
2:44 PM
I just threw in a gpio.wait_for_edge(18, gpio.FALLING) instead of a check for the state

user139252
This is why I don't do things before 10 AM.

@A.B. good evening :)
o/ hi everyone

Hi Serg

8:04 PM
i'm a bit lazy tonight. Have answered just one question . . . yawn

Greetings from too warm Germany! ;)

I would almost tend to say that it went away when I wrote it.

@ByteCommander: I don't know, but I often have to talk about it in bug reports and I just don't know what to call it... Do you think that the question would be fine for the main AU site?

8:27 PM
@Serg thx :)

Current is 38.1 and I don't understand why Ubuntu people don't update such important software. Firefox is up to date though.
@ParanoidPanda Ask. Just ask. That's what the site is for. ;)

user136984
Ok :)

You will probably get an answer within 5 minutes.
The worst thing that can happen is a bunch of downvotes...

8:45 PM
what would be the worst question that has been asked here ?

Probably any that I ask. :P

@Serg @Fabby's question about "any key" probably? ;)

user136984

rofl, it actually confused me for a second. I opened a link to Fabby's answer. Well, Fabby has sense of humor, so I'm like OK. Then I notice who asked the question. I was like "Did I not get enough sleep and my mind isn't processing things well, or is Fabby for real ? " Then i realized it was all a joke

user136984
@Serg: Well, I don't know about questions, but this is probably the worst question I have ever seen! :D

user136984
@Oli: Wooops! Sorry, I was going for the star on @ByteCommander's pie thing, and for some reason it also flagged it...

@Serg That was PI, no pie. And it is 3.1416 if you round it correctly, as the next digit would be a 9. ;)
(Sorry for nitpicking ;) )
@ParanoidPanda Don't see any flag - at least not any more.
Anyway, it's late. Good night guys!

Lol, I was attempting a math joke, but i don't even know all pi digits
@ByteCommander o/ good night

@Serg Did you just say ALL?

user136984
9:03 PM
@ByteCommander: I think only users of 10k+ and mods can see the flags (including the ones who have cast them)...

You do know that PI is an irrational number, don't you?
It has infinite digits.
>.<

@ByteCommander >_< yes, i know .
my brain isn't quite working today
mkay ?

@ParanoidPanda Could be. I remember to have seen that blue bubble next to a post, but yes, I flagged that one myself.
Good night then. Finally.
