@psimeson Sorry, I wasn't around. Did you copy your data off your drive while it was attached to your Ubuntu?

2:54 AM
@terrance I did copy most of the files

@psimeson Good. :)
@psimeson I can't remember, as I would have to boot my MacBook, but I think that you can do a boot recovery on it.

@terrance I transferred those files to my external hdd but mac can't open that hdd now

@psimeson You can't open the external HDD or the original Mac HDD?

@Terrance I only tried access External hdd on my another mac

@psimeson Have you tried connecting the one we fixed to your other mac in the external USB adapter?

2:58 AM
@Terrance I haven't done that

@psimeson see if you can access the drive we fixed. That drive we fixed though might need a boot repair done on it if you want to try booting back to it.

@Terrance give me couple of minutes to set it up

@psimeson OK

@terrance I go this imgur.com/BQ4HmlR after I connected that drive to my other mac
I can hit initialize and it will take me to Disk Utility

@psimeson Hmmmmm, were you still able to still mount it under the Ubuntu just fine?

3:04 AM
@Terrance ya I was able to do and I checked it before I left the work
At home I don't have ubuntu machine

@psimeson Ah, OK. You can go ahead and run the Disk Utility on it and see if you can repair the disk.

@Terrance Repair Disk option is greyed out

@psimeson OK. Let me see something here. One moment.

if you want then I am open to using Team Viewer

OK, give me a moment

3:12 AM

@psimeson OK, send me the code again.

how to check if ssd is failing in mac...any software that can help me do that?

4:56 AM
@Terrance do you think the sata cable on the mac is gone bad? I had that problem before and I replace it about 2 years ago

5:08 AM
[ SmokeDetector ] Manually reported question: What the essential part of good essay writing papers by pehummo on askubuntu.com

@psimeson That is not a common item to go bad, but with heat inside a computer breaking down cables, etc, I could see that being a problem causing data corruption to happen.

@Terrance I want to make sure if that's the problem or not before doing the whole reinstallation thing

@psimeson I remember a while ago when they had the iMacs that looked like the desk lamps, there was a problem booting the computer up with the cable that went up to the screen. It had nothing to do with the boot, but Apple suggested replacement, so I did.
@psimeson you can google search Mac SSD Drive diagnostics. A quick search and I found this: mashtips.com/ssd-tools-for-mac

@terrance did that search and I am yet to find a good freeware

@psimeson yeah, freeware for the Mac is hard to find. I would recommend keeping a good backup of the drive, and then formatting it and reinstalling it and see how it works. I am not using any SSD drives personally, so I might not know any good techniques at the moment.

5:21 AM
@Terrance I can test if it's ssd or the cable now: I have a old HDD which I replaced with the ssd... but that hdd also has some problem.. if i can sort that problem using testdisk then i can try

@psimeson yeah, that definitely is one thing to try. :)
@psimeson I am out for the night. Good luck on that testing / diagnostics.

@Terrance I am not confident at using testdisk.. anyway I will give it a try ..thanks

@psimeson maybe this might help for testdisk: cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Step_By_Step

@terrance thanks, i was gonna read that document... have a good night!

How do I find out in the terminal when a file was created/last accessed?

@ByteCommander Created or last accessed?

Q: How to find the creation time of a file?

nuxI need to find the creation time of a file, when I read some article about this issue, all mentioned that there is no solution like Site1, Site2. When I tried stat command it state Birth: - So how can I find the creation time of a file?

Access:
stat --printf '%n:%x\n' file

@terdon I need to verify whether a lockfile belongs to a program that ran before the last reboot, so I think accessed should be what I need?

@ByteCommander Depends on how the lockfile is dealt with. It may well not be accessed, the program might just check for its existence and that is not accessing the file.

@terdon How about apt-get's lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock?

@ByteCommander I don't think that will be accessed, apt probably just checks whether the file exists or not.

But created is also accessed.
So when it was created/accessed the last time before a reboot, it's safe to delete it manually. Otherwise not. Right?
It should be equal in this case which date I use, isn't it?

10:53 AM
@ByteCommander Yes, but accessed is not created.
And I'm not sure if created is accessed. I guess so but let me check
OK, yes, it is
@ByteCommander Probably, yes. What is going on? Has apt crashed on you?
Are there any running apt processes?

Nope, there was just a question about this... Not my own problem this time ;)

If not, I don't see why you can't delete the lockfile, irrespective of its age.

I think sometimes it is not obvious whether an apllication using the lock is still running or not.
Therefore I personally would suggest to reboot and then check the date.
Too careful?

@ByteCommander pgrep apt

WOuld that also capture SOftware center/Updater?

11:00 AM
That should always be enough.
@ByteCommander Sure, doesn't that run apt in the background?

`\_('-')_/´
I don't know...

11:13 AM
It must, there's no other way. The only thing using that lockfile is apt. If there's no apt process running, you can delete it.

S you v?

Can use lsof to see if anything has the lockfile open.
(Damn my paws)

That too, but does it need to be open? I think apt will just check if it exists and then continue. Why would it keep it open?

11:27 AM
If nothing has it open its safe to delete

11:51 AM
@JourneymanGeek Probably. I'm pretty sure it is always safe to delete, really. It's only there to avoid having parallel apt instances. As long as you don't do that, it should be fine.

@Serg Good answer. That SamFlynn has been asking lots of similar questions lately.

8:19 PM
@Terrance hi ! Yeah, I actually like that he's asking those questions. I've improved my awk skills significantly while practicing on his questions. And it gained me some rep ,too ;)

@Serg Hey! That is the actually a great way to learn. :)
I seem to be earning downvotes lately on alternative ways to achieve the same goals. Sometimes I don't understand people. Oh well...

@Terrance Indeed. I've created my AU account specifically for the purpose of learning. I remember there has been a video on youtube where the guy was talking about how to become a developer or how to enter IT field or something like that. So the guy suggested joining StackExchange and working on real world problems that people ask about. That's how I got here :)

@Serg I have learned a TON here as well, and I have learned that there are also many ways to do things. It is always good to find as many ways as possible to come up with the answers. You have shown me great ways as well. :D

:D

I also do not believe in downvoting anybody here, if their answer works. :)

They really like it. It is funny that I used to work for a game studio, but yet I don't game all that often.

8:27 PM
You know, it's like . . . amazing , how when I joined AU I was looking up to muru and chili and others, and I'm now at this level . Of course no where near them, but at least I can talk and learn from higher-rep and more experienced users. It's like . . . wow . . .I've come a long way since joining
and the fact that i can now pull out some scripts of my own . . . it's just . . . mind-blowing

@Serg I am still earning that rep. :) I don't mind constructive criticism from people. And it is good when someone finds a mistake that I may have put in. In my scripting, I use slashes on the echo lines for testing, but I forgot once in a post, and man did I get all sorts of grief for it.

@Terrance it's not even about mistakes. I tend to write something without fully understanding question, get some critique for it, then go back and edit it 150 times or so. It's natural, and I actually ask for criticism and reviews a lot, because I want to learn. And of course I can't give higher rep users a lot of competition, because they're more experienced, but the fact that I am even attempting to post something along their answer is what excites me

@Serg Yeah, that did happen to me once, but it was a commenter that told me I was way off base, but as it turned out, I wasn't off base. It was just that the person that wrote the answer was dead set that what they wrote was correct. One thing that I have learned from my years of being in the computer industry is to never assume. Always take your time and find out as much as you can before helping them. But I am with you, it really does get exciting to share your knowledge with others.

8:45 PM
@kos Regarding your question askubuntu.com/q/640819/295286 . I haven't experienced this issue, since what I usually do is set up two newlines in my PS1 prompt, one before and one after my host+username. like so

9:40 PM
@NathanOsman - I know you use a raspi for some things... have you seen a powered USB hub that runs on a battery and optionally on 110?

Well... I have one of those external USB batteries. It provides (I think) up to 3 amps for each port. As long as you don't need data, you can plug any powered USB device in there and it should work.

Cool, but I was looking to drive something like this: newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA25V2XX9634 but from a battery. I could get it, then see what the adapter changes 110 in to before it hits the hub.

Yeah, but I need data...

9:45 PM
@hbdgaf Hmm...
That's a tough one.
@RPiAwesomeness Those look pretty spiffy.

@NathanOsman Indeed :D

Do they sound good?

And they sound awesome :D

@hbdgaf Okay, here goes a really hair-brained idea...
Look closely at the image of the hub you linked to:

And it came with a portable AMP, so I get even better sound. AND the amp has a bass-boosting mode, so I can crank it up if I want :D

9:46 PM

When you call it hair-brained it scares me.

The power cable appears to connect via micro-USB.
(Or my eyes are failing me already :P)

It does look like it pushes over usb, so probably usb port used - not necessarily usb power levels though.

Right, but that's where my battery might come in.
Random sidenote:

That could work. It would certainly last longer than those tube USB batteries if the power in needed lines up.

#approved-by-win98-users

So IIRC, my battery was about $59 CDN. The "smart" USB port is 5V/2.4A and the "universal" USB port is 5V/4A. It has a 12,000 mAh capacity and runs at 3.7V. Model number is Anker 79AN7904.

At least you know it's using a reliable chipset. Thanks. I'll look in to it.

Kinda looks like this one:

9:50 PM
Clamping force is a bit strong, but I'm assuming they'll break in soon.

Wait, now I'm wondering what would happen if I just made a cord that split off the data and power channels on to a Y-cable. One for the battery and one for the data...
I suppose I could test it on a pi, so if I fry something I'm only out about 20 bucks.

Yeah, that might work too.

As long as the USB controller doesn't use a sag in power to detect a device being plugged in, it would work fine.
o/ @Lucio

Oh. That pain might have been because I had the headphones reversed.
It helps if you put them on correctly...

9:54 PM
Hello! Glad to see you all around :)

@RPiAwesomeness ooo, do they still make headphones that have vibration motors for low base bumps

o/

@Mateo No idea... :D
All I know is that these headphones are awesome :D

@NathanOsman many congratulations for the achievement buddy!!

@hbdgaf I'm pretty sure the battery would work. I was able to power my Raspberry Pi and an external 7" DisplayLink monitor without any issues.
@Lucio Thanks!

9:56 PM
@NathanOsman It's not just for the pi. It's also so I can provide supplemental power to run an optical drive, USB-HDD, wireless, keyboard, and mouse on my laptop at the same time
all off one port... like a dummy, i broke one of the ports on that controller... and the other is on the opposite side of the

Well, mice and keyboards usually are fine with 100mA. Most wireless chips are either 100 mA or 500 mA. Though I find it odd that an optical drive could be 100% bus-powered.

My DVDRW is. It's a two port thing to get enough power. Same as the HDD
So, I'm trying to drive like 6 ports worth of USB amps through one port. Hence the conundrum.

Ah. Yeah, running both of those (optical drive and HDD) might be an issue... is there a label anywhere stating the power requirements for either?

I could find it, but I think I've bothered everyone enough to get me thinking.

I've never seen anything portable that offers more than about 4 Amps.

10:00 PM
The optical is 1.6A. Can't find it on the HDD

You could probably get away with everything but the HDD or switch back-and-forth between them as necessary.

Can't find it on the HDD though... probably similar, so it should just work if I use your or another decent battery along with a hub and a weird Y cable.

10:12 PM
or a weird Y cable

did it work?
