Any mods out there who can undelete this deleted answer? Just look at my dumb comments and the conversation in this chat room by steeldriver... (my apologies for causing extra work, but I've been told I'm just too polite)
(Or anyone that can star above so that the mods can pick it up when they have time?)

that is quite an interesting place to install a program...

Also, is that Nemo?
It looks different from my Nautilus
@Fabby Radioisotope dating? That's been proven time and again that it's wildly inaccurate.

2:02 AM
@RPiAwesomeness It's wildly inaccurate for very short-term dating and extremely accurate at medium-term dating and "meh" for long-term dating...
So if radioisotope dating say the Earth is 4 000 000 years old, it's never going to be 10 000...
;-)
And thanks for the star! :-)

@Fabby Don't get me started on the problems with radiometric dating.
Anyone being intellectually honest will admit that all of the methods are based on assumptions.
(For example, the assumptions that the decay rate was constant, the original estimated quantity of the daughter product is correct, no other sources of the daughter product were introduced, etc.)
> "So if radioisotope dating say..."
Wooooah. Wait a second. That's the fallacy of reification. Radiometric dating methods don't "speak". Rather, they are models that attempt to explain evidence. Since fallible humans are creating the models, they are not themselves infallible.

Q: binary is able to run only when run after creating a symbolic link to it

theadnangondalI am facing a rather strange problem. I have a 32 bit qmake binary placed at a very deep path. So for ease of use I created a link using ln -s /complicated/path/to/qmake ~/qmake I am running a 64 bit machine. So I installed 32 bit libraries. The binary is failing to load when I run ~/...

FabbyI got serially upvoted acouple of hours ago and the system (correctly) reversed this a few minutes ago... However I also got a silver badge for this question but that was not reversed. Should I mention this on meta.SO as well or is a bug tag here good enough for the powers that be to pick it up?

Ugh. I need a way to infinitely recurse through nested XML to grab formatting data from a Gtk TextView/TextBuffer but I don't know the proper way to go through all the data...
not really sure how to explain it either :P Which, in turn, means I can't figure out the correct process :P

Oli
@RPiAwesomeness Recurse to do what?

@RPiAwesomeness Sounds like you're looking for an XML parser. Don't try and code it yourself.

Oli
Agreed :) Let lxml (et alii) help you out.
Or BeautifulSoup if you can. That's about as nice an interface as you'll ever get on XML-like content.

@Oli Well, basically I get a string of XML from the Gtk textbuffer with the formatting flags included. It looks similar to <text><apply_tag="bold">TEXT<apply_tag="italic">Moar text</apply_tag></apply_tag></text>
I need to go through that and find all of the <apply_tag="..."> tags and any of the text within that tag and convert the tag and text into HTML.

@RPiAwesomeness XML parser!

1:32 PM
@terdon Okay, so, any suggestions?

Oli
BeautifulSoup in Python. Super-simple.

See Oli's above.

Oli

A: How to change tag name with BeautifulSoup?

msalvadoresI don't know how you're accessing tag but the following works for me: import BeautifulSoup if __name__ == "__main__": data = """ <html> <h2 class='someclass'>some title</h2> <ul> <li>Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit.</li> <li>Aliquam tincidunt mauris eu risus.</li

Whoa. It's literally that simple?
sobs in the corner

@RPiAwesomeness XML was not designed for humans to deal with. It's an awful format unless you use a dedicated parser.
Tony the pony applies.

2:13 PM
Hi there.

user136984
37 more rep points and I'll be back to 3k again! :)

Why is the Gtk TextBuffer.serialize() writing applying italic and underline tags to text that lacks any formatting in the TextView? Grrr
@ParanoidPanda Add a bounty on something?

user136984
@RPiAwesomeness: If I want more rep why would I add a bounty on something? As a bounty gives away points, it doesn't earn you any...

@ParanoidPanda I know, I was wondering why you went below 3k.

user136984
@RPiAwesomeness: Oh, right, I went bellow that amount because almost immediately as I reached it the system decided to catch up with someone who had been very slowly serial voting me up for a long time, so just as I got over the 3k mark, it set me back almost 400 points! :D

user136984
2:17 PM
And this was about 2 or 3 days ago.

@RPiAwesomeness Unfortunately, I don't have time for you now... I'm out this evening and have to prepare another speech about Shakespeare's Macbeth before.

@ParanoidPanda >.< Not fun man, not fun.

But I promise I will convince you to believe in science on Friday! ;)

@ByteCommander That's fine, I wouldn't have time to engage in rhetoric for very long anyways. I have to go get a drug test for a job application
Please, everyone remind me not to eat a lemon poppy-seed muffin within the next 24 hours >.>

user136984
2:19 PM
Why?

Drug test?
For what kind of job?
And how old were you again by the way? 15?

@ParanoidPanda Poppy's are the/a source of nicotine, so poppy-seed muffins (with poppy-seeds) can set off the nicotine detector in a test.
@ByteCommander Book Shelver for local library :D

@RPiAwesomeness THAT requires drug tests? From 15 years old?
Oh my...

lol, ikr

Ahhh! The famous whiz quiz!

2:21 PM
Where did this world go...

They gotta be careful, I guess
@ByteCommander Down the tubes.

I'm going for a quick diner.

Oli
@RPiAwesomeness Do you mean nicotine or opiate?

@chili555 Indeed. Or, rather, the eCup (as it's called where I have to take it.)
@Oli Oh duh. Opium. Sorry.
I don't keep up with my illicit substances very well, y'know?
@ByteCommander A quick diner? Goodness, you must be strong or have a very tiny diner. ;)

user136984
2:23 PM
@RPiAwesomeness Oh, I'm sorry, but that is hilarious! :D :D :D

@ParanoidPanda ;) It's fine. I'm totally cool with it (never done drugs worse than taking steroids back when I had Strep throat)
Or whatever that stuff was...
All I know is that I reacted something awful to the first medicine they gave me. Hives ahoy >.<

Oli
@RPiAwesomeness You should probably find out. Knowing you have a penicillin allergy is a useful thing to remember.

user136984
@RPiAwesomeness: I remember once when I was having an operation, and just before the operation they gave me the medical equivalent of some drug, and basically the outcome was that I went overly happy, a little crazy, and now I've got pictures to prove it! :D :P

@Oli Yeah....
@ParanoidPanda >.<
I don't think it was penicillin, but probably still some thing I should know.

user136984
Well, I know for sure that I am allergic to fresh green Russian apples...

2:28 PM
@RPiAwesomeness If it's serious enough, you might make arrangements for EMTs to know it in case of accident. Medic alert and all that.

@chili555 yeah. I wasn't life threatening or anything, just exceptionally itchy

Oli
They can get a lot worse.

They can indeed.

I'd get tested and follow te professional's recommendations.

Oli
Once you body knows it doesn't like them, you can have a proper immune response the next time. Swelling, not able to breath, etc.

user136984
2:30 PM
When I eat fresh green Russian apples, I can't breath!

@ParanoidPanda Ooo...not nice.

Oli
Yeah that's pretty bad

@Oli Hmm...I may need to go talk to my mom :D

user136984
@RPiAwesomeness: Yes, I found that out a few years ago when I went to a nice restaurant in Russia! :D

@ParanoidPanda Oh delightful. Did you get the EpiPen?
That thing just looks evil.
That. Stabbed into your leg at high velocity.

2:32 PM
Oy...
Don't want to imagine...
11 mins ago, by RPi Awesomeness
@ByteCommander A quick diner? Goodness, you must be strong or have a very tiny diner. ;)

user136984
@RPiAwesomeness No, luckily it wasn't such a bad reaction, and drinking a lot of water managed to calm whatever it was down. But I have heard that a lot of allergies can get much worse if you carry on getting whatever triggers them, so no more fresh green Russian apples for me! ;D

@RPiAwesomeness Why strong?
Btw does anybody of you all know a famous quote from Macbeth?
I know I can google (and I did), but there are so many I never heard of, so I wanted to ask if some of them are more common...

user136984
@ByteCommander: If I remember correctly there was something about the woman killing her own child while it was breast feeding if she had said she would to do it.

user136984
Or something of the sort anyway...

I will NOT present that one!

user136984

user136984

What about that:

user136984
I think it's rather powerful though.

2:38 PM
> Stars, hide your fires,
Let not light see my black and deep desires;

user136984
Any chance someone could just give me 37 extra rep so I can reach 3k (again)? :D :P

@ByteCommander 'cause a diner is where you go to eat, not what you eat.

user136984
@ByteCommander: I just don't think that the wording is powerful enough in that one.

user136984
:D

@ByteCommander Oh good gosh.

2:40 PM
Shakespeare... :P

ikr...

But that was exactly my thought too. :)
So how do you call the meal you have at noon then? @RPiAwesomeness

user136984
Does anybody know if playonlinux is good?

@ByteCommander Lunch, usually.
I think you meant dinner. Two Ns

Oli
@ParanoidPanda Takes a lot of the guesswork out of things, but it has quite a bit of overhead for Steam-based things (because it needs a separate install of Steam for each game).

2:47 PM
Dinner tends to refer more towards a bigger, fancier meal. Supper is more of the everyday.
@Oli Really? o.O

Oli
Yeah each game is its own Wine installation/prefix

user136984
@Oli: Yeah, well I probably wouldn't be using it for Steam, so that should be fine, but out of interest, why is there that Steam problem? And are they going to overcome it at some point?

WINE really needs to figure out how to remove that 2GB RAM limit. It's a royal pain :P
I'm actually curious why they haven't done that yet...

Oli
@ParanoidPanda As I say, it's because of the way it works. Every game you install in PoL is a separate version of Wine. This allows it to apply all sorts of hacks to that one version of Wine that the game needs (that may negatively affect other games). It's really by design.

2:50 PM
Ah, yes. Okay dinner with "nn".

Oh that's right...WINE emulates-thing a 32 bit version of Windows :P

user136984
@RPiAwesomeness: Is there not a config thing that you can change to remove that limit?

But supper was for the evening, I thought?

@ByteCommander It is.
Supper is evening, lunch is noon.

user136984
@RPiAwesomeness @ByteCommander: Why are you two on about different times of eating?

2:52 PM
Dinner can be used for either or, but it's usually for fancier/bigger meals.

You English speakers have a strange way to name your meals...

@ParanoidPanda No. It's because 32 bit computers can't use more than 4 GB of RAM

user136984
Oh, right...

user136984
@RPiAwesomeness: Shouldn't they create one which emulates a 64-bit computer then too?

In German it is just Mittagessen and Abendessen usually ("noon meal" and "evening meal", if translated literally)
It should be possible to break that limit.

2:54 PM
Yeah...I think I may have discovered the way to fix it.

user136984
@Oli: Would it be good to run the Windows version of Skype in PoL? As I tried in Wine but there was an issue with me not having the correct Microsoft fonts.

Which will be awesome because then I can use After Effects...
@ParanoidPanda Why not run the Linux version? It works fine for me...

^^
In computing, Physical Address Extension (PAE) is a memory management feature for the IA-32 architecture, first introduced in the Pentium Pro. It defines a page table hierarchy of three levels, with table entries of 64 bits each instead of 32, allowing these CPUs to access a physical address space larger than 4 gigabytes (232 bytes). The page table structure used by x86-64 CPUs when operating in 64-bit mode further extends the page table hierarchy to four levels, extending the virtual address space, and uses additional physical address bits at all levels of the page table, extending the physical...

user136984
@RPiAwesomeness: I do, but it's just that it has such great design flaws, and just looks really ugly (although you do get used to it, and at least with the mooning emoticon it does not put a big black box over its parts), it also has some privacy things which you have to manually change in the config file when it would be much more useful just to alter them in the GUI.

user136984
There are also many other feature limitations.

user136984
2:57 PM
And just things not working as they should and do in the Windows version.

Really? I've never had issues with it.

Stop praising Windows!
>;)

user136984
I'm not, I'm praising the Windows version, not the actual OS, just some of its software!

@ParanoidPanda Looks fine to me. You're just picky ;)

Both are from M$...

user136984
2:59 PM
Yes, Microsoft have just sort of left the Linux one to rot.

user136984
Anyway, all I'm asking is if PoL would put the correct fonts there.

Why does my chat not scroll automatically any more?

Dunno.

user136984
@ByteCommander: Is your bar at the bottom, if so, it should work, although it doesn't always with me.

It jumps to the bottom when I sent something, but does not scroll with others' posts any more...

user136984
3:00 PM
Hmm...

user136984
Odd...

Oooo...I may have Adobe After Effects CS 2 (7.0) working in WINE....

(referring to the film "Interstellar" we watched today in Physics class... :) )

@ByteCommander Is it that good that it has to be shown in physics class????

It is a good film, but no good physics.
My Chemistry teacher actually watched the movie
and asked my physics teacher how much truth there is in that film.
or how close the showed things are to the real physical world.
So we watched it in Physics (as all exams are done and we won't learn anything any more anyway (so many anys...)
And we should have noted down all things that could not be real.
Of course, nobody of us wrote anything (too lazy), but our teacher said he had to stop writing because his two sheets of paper were full...
And the were indeed! :D

@ByteCommander: You've got an open bracket, with no close bracket, and it is very sad on its own without a partner, so could you please fix that, or it will grab all of the rest of the chat's text into its big fat mouth! :D

@Fabby: Do you think that we will ever complete everything in the close vote queue, so that there are 0 things left, for at least a little while?

Q: Can't boot Windows XP from Grub2 in Ubuntu 14.04.2

em1lio189I can't boot my Windows XP OS on a dual boot with Windows XP and Ubuntu 14.04.2. I already tried the command update-grub with no results. Here is the output from Boot info: Pastebin - Boot Info Script 0.61

@ByteCommander wasn't as bad as the Gravity movie

Hmm...learning after effects is far more fun than coding right now :P
Also, my mouse is supposed to come today. I'm so excited :D
