Also got hit with this:
When resuming an edit in Gedit, the ibus daemon flares up, abusing the CPU for a short while. This happens every time lately. All that's needed is to switch windows back to Gedit and resume editing. Then the CPU usage spikes for a moment before going back down. I would expect that the correct behavir is for the CPU usage to stay low, no matter the activity in Gedit. top has the following, sometimes even higher use, but it's very hard to catch since it happens for only a moment: PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 2730 user 20 0 373672 23440 1740 R 172,6 0,6 45:11.21 ibus-daemon 2756 user 20 0 285672 3660 2604 S 105,9 0,1 26:31.45 ibus-x11 2525 root 20 0 358760 118124 21216 S 87,6 3,0 197:29.28 Xorg 11441 user 20 0 971708 73700 17856 S 81,3 1,9 13:22.85 gedit syslog has this: Mar 30 13:50:48 lubuntu dbus[482]: [system] Activating service name='org.freedesktop.hostna

Q: What does it mean, when lshw says a wireless adapter to be `UNCLAIMED`, while iwconfig doesn't find it?

TimWhat does it mean, when iwconfig doesn't find (i.e. report) an internal wireless adapter, while lshw says it to be UNCLAIMED? If the adapter is in loose connection to the PCI or whatever it should be connected to, can lshw still find (i.e. report) it? *-network UNCLAIMED description: ...

Q: Why can't I start a VNC session using the randr flag?

s g I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 (I think it's desktop...) and can successfully run vncserver (which ultimately links to /usr/bin/vnc4server) and connect with my client, and I can also add the -geometry flag and connect to it. However, the server doesn't start when I add the randr flag like in this example...

Guys, will you upgrade to 14.10? Or would you recommend someone to upgrade?
I tend to do it.

Oli
@IonicăBizău I'm probably going to stick with 14.04 and use the "hardware enablement" versions of the Kernel and X. And I'll probably move to a PPA for KDE5 when it's finally functional enough.
I also have 14.04 servers so keeping everything pre-systemd for as long as possible is going to be helpful for my sanity.

8:24 AM
@IonicăBizău I'm probably gonna switch, just to get a clean start again. I filled up my Ubuntu - as usual with - junk.
I wasnt expecting this answer: Probably because they didn't know it existed. - ux.stackexchange.com/a/66719/43526

Well I know people are dying but I'm furious because I just cleaned the garden up last week and this wind has come along and blown all the leaves everywhere.
First world problems.

Q: Is .ogg for Audio or for Video format?

KasiyAWhat is the .ogg format? Is that used for audio files or used for video files? I found two examples in /usr/share/example-content/Ubuntu_Free_Culture_Showcase

Sounds... somewhat off-topic.
but I'm leaning towards "it's fine".

@Seth I think it's fine

cool, I'm going with fine then.

@Seth I'd shunt it to SU. Nothing there about Ubuntu.

@Seth yeah seems ok, since it is a main format, and there are examples in ubuntu included

Ah, hang on, no, he's asking about specific files. That might indeed make it on topic.
Still, the basic Q is what is ogg and that is not an Ubuntu thang.

7:09 PM
Yes, at its core it is not about Ubuntu, but I believe it is too borderline to shunt around (I'm pretty sure SU would just kill it anyway)

And it's falling as we speak :P

8:03 PM
@Seth I also flaged that as off-topic since that is not about Ubuntu. Sorry for that, it's my old beginner question.

Stack Exchange is a network of question and answer websites on diverse topics in many different fields, each site covering a specific topic, where questions, answers, and users are subject to a reputation award process. The sites are modeled after Stack Overflow, a forum for computer programming questions that was the original site in this network. The reputation system is designed to allow the sites to be self-moderating. == History == In 2008, Jeff Atwood and Joel Spolsky created Stack Overflow, a question-and-answer Web site for computer programming questions, which they described as a...
After the last update I did, last night the 22, there is pink highlights everywhere. I don't have any options selected to show pink in appearance and it was all working great before the updates. I tried deleting my settings and it still shows up. I do have some third party repos enabled but nothing that I would think would change my appearance like this. no, not a bug, just someone complaining about the default theme...

8:27 PM

@KasiyA nice
@Seth cough fuchsia cough
er, that is a strange looking word
Fuchsia (/ˈfjuːʃə/, FEW-shə) is a vivid purplish red color, named after the flower of the fuchsia plant, which took its name from the 16th century German botanist Leonhart Fuchs. The color fuchsia was first introduced as the color of a new aniline dye called fuchsine, patented in 1859 by the French chemist Francois-Emmanuel Verguin. Its name was changed the same year to magenta, to celebrate a victory of the French army at the Battle of Magenta on June 4, 1859, near the Italian city of that name. In the RGB color model, used to create colors on computers and television screens, and in web colors...

@Mateo heheh, yes you win ;)
@KasiyA No, not a bug. You can see it was marked "invalid".

didn't want anyone flagging it as a bad word...

Looked more Magenta to me

8:32 PM
there is a hint more purpleish to it than magenta ;)
magenta
then the theme color

I think I need to re-calibrate my monitor haha

Q: How to best communicate color names to users more clearly

MateoMany times in using general color names in communication, i.e. Red and Green, users are confused when the color is a non-pure form of the color. For Example, in referring to the Red-ish color of the error box on Ask Ubuntu: There is much debate as to what to classify the color as, Here are so...

@NathanOsman agree

Wow
Does the include Office :P

There seems to be some sort of Office for Android, and if Chrome can be made to run Android apps... :P

Yup, there's an Office for Android.

and there are the webapps
there is a install that makes .desktop short-cuts for them
@badp might be an interesting one to try with this: omgubuntu.co.uk/2014/09/install-android-apps-ubuntu-archon

So...I ordered mine GPU, SSD, and Case! Yay me!
All that remains is mass storage + CPU!

What GPU did you go with?

EVGA GeForce GTX 750 Ti w/ACX cooler

Oh, it's an Nvidia card.

@NathanOsman Uh...is that bad?
I thought NVIDIA had better support for Linux than AMD...

Depends what you need/use it for.

11:48 PM
@NathanOsman Well, this PC is gonna be more of a productivity/coding/graphics PC than a gaming one

I see.
@RPiAwesomeness In some cases yes. In others, not so much.

@NathanOsman Curse you, now you're making me second-guess my decision

Hang on.
Let me share my experience...
1) The open-source AMD driver works better than the open-source Nvidia driver (Noveau)
2) The binary Nvidia driver works better than the binary AMD driver
3) AMD cards are nearly useless for rendering and computation

@NathanOsman And I'm going for more of a productivity (rendering included) PC and don't care a crap ton about using open-source drivers vs proprietary

Okay.
You'll probably be fine then.
