12:25 AM
That was clever - I removed myself from all of the groups I was in including the sudo group.

12:54 AM
@NathanOsman Oh, well done sir!

@NathanOsman How'd you manage that?
And have you fixed it?

Yes.
I used the wrong switch when running usermod.
I fixed it by booting into recovery mode, remounting / as rw, and then adding myself to the other groups again.
Now my monitor is being a pain. It goes blank briefly at random intervals.

On mine that was a loose cord, but could be power management

Every three minutes now.
I checked the cord.
And it only does it during certain sessions (not after every boot), so I'm thinking it's power management.
It was fine all day today until a few minutes ago when I rebooted.

12:58 AM
Had some weird things on my mini PC where I completely disabled apci and then it worked fine, you don't really need apcid right?

It spewed this to the X log earlier: dpaste.de/nMOL
No idea if that's relevant.

config file?
like xorg.conf...

Don't have an xorg.conf.
I'm using the open-source Radeon driver.

it might have created a file in that one folder

nathan@nathan-desktop:/etc/X11$ ls
app-defaults             X                   Xreset.d          xsm
cursors                  xinit               Xresources        Xwrapper.config
default-display-manager  xkb                 Xsession
fonts                    xorg.conf.failsafe  Xsession.d
rgb.txt                  Xreset              Xsession.options

1:02 AM
etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-radeon.conf

@Mateo Did you hear? I ordered some PC components!

I don't seem to have a xorg.conf.d directory in there...
(I'm running Utopic if that helps.)

@RPiAwesomeness oooo, which parts came in

@Mateo None have come in yet

which ones are coming?

1:04 AM
@Mateo GPU, SSD, & case :D

@hbdgaf <3 that

Almost there!

nice, are you going for the mechanical keyboard?

@Mateo Oh laudy no :P
Those cost a TON
I'm asking for one for xmas though
Well, the good ones cost a ton

yeah... they are really good though

1:06 AM
@Mateo Ik :(

Interestingly, it seems to have stopped for the moment. Spoke too soon.

@NathanOsman :p

@NathanOsman try copying the edid information and putting it into a xorg.conf file
in the proper format of course
@NathanOsman what is in your .failsafe

lol, it's always funny when your mom is refreshing a craigslist post you made for her that you included HTML code in :)

1:10 AM
@NathanOsman does this sound relevant ", but due to the timing of the re-clocking functions, does not always complete in the blanking period, which can lead to flicker in the display." wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI

Warning. Shameless self-advertising inbound

@Mateo Reading...

What do y'all think of my Happy 10th Birthday Ubuntu post here?
It's not quite finished, but I wanted to get it off before tomorrow.

@Mateo Interestingly:
nathan@nathan-desktop:~$ cat /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_method
dpm

well, it's not dynpm...
but it is similar
so there is 'profile', with different modes

1:18 AM
I'm going to monitor /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_profile and see if it changes during the next flicker.
If so, that will certainly confirm the problem.

> "profile" method is not as agressive as "dynpm," but is currently much more stable and flicker free and works with multiple heads active.

That sounds like what I need.
I'll give it a go if this happens again.

so, maybe, I usually kick my nvida into high whenever I play games
I've heard some games have problems with the auto switching mode

Ah.
I don't have any 3D stuff installed at the moment to test it with. glxgears doesn't really cut it.
I can't write to /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_method even as root :|

Someone wanna throw a vote on this to resolve the question?
@EliahKagan I'm curious why you think this post is not a duplicate of this post. They appear to be asking the same thing and the answers are very similar.

1:33 AM
@NathanOsman phoronix.com/forums/… does this one work - it says use sudo -i ?

I'm getting this error:
root@nathan-desktop:~# echo profile >/sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_method
bash: echo: write error: Invalid argument

try a space after the >
don't know it that makes any diffrence

Nope, no difference :(

Q: sudo echo "something" >> /etc/privilegedFile doesn't work... is there an alternative?

DavidThis is a pretty simple question, at least it seems like it should be, about sudo permissions in Linux. There are a lot of times when I just want to append something to /etc/hosts or a similar file but end up not being able to because both > and >> are not allowed, even with root. Is there some...

Same result with tee :(
I'm gonna try rebooting.

1:38 AM
the sh -c ?

Back.
@Mateo I think that's just to step around the sudo issue with echo.
I'm running all of these commands in a root terminal.
Maybe it doesn't like 'profile'. It won't even let me write 'dpm'.

Q: Bash Script: Invalid argument

David ThorissonWhy can't I use echo $1 > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness in a simple bash script? It gives me the error: echo: write error: Invalid argument.

so maybe the newline problem with echo?
something like - echo -n "profile"

I thought of that too... but it doesn't seem to make a difference.

that is strange

root@nathan-desktop:~# echo -n 'profile' >/sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_method
bash: echo: write error: Invalid argument

1:45 AM
maybe a side effect of shell shock?

And yet:
root@nathan-desktop:~# cat /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_method
dpm
Anyway, it hasn't happened yet since rebooting.
And I can confirm that the card is switching power levels.
root@nathan-desktop:~# cat /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/radeon_pm_info
uvd    vclk: 0 dclk: 0
power level 0    sclk: 35000 mclk: 140000 vddc: 950 vddci: 1025 pcie gen: 2

@NathanOsman ah, that is good, so not doing it during a switch

It's only one monitor (I have two) that does this - I should have mentioned that earlier I guess.

ah, then the edid then...

2:24 AM
So, what are people thinking of 15.04's name?

At least this one is spell-able.
"vervet" I can remember.

"Now was it "tahr" or "tarh"..."

I never had trouble remembering Tahr, but Oneiric and Quetzal always threw me for loops.. and still do.

I made myself remember "oneiric" be pronouncing it (incorrectly) as "ONE-EYE-RIC".
Hey, it worked :P

2:28 AM
haha

One thing they did right in Utopic - the docker.io package now includes a symlink for docker.

@Seth I'm still waiting for Zonked Zebra

"Hey, have you tried 17.04 out yet? It's totally zonked!"

2:51 AM
It'll be "Zany Zebra".
Either that or "zesty" or "zippy".
But my bets are on "zany".

I wonder if the actual Canonical meetings on what name to choose are as light-hearted

Zany sounds nice.. But knowing Mark I somehow feel "Zesty" will be the choice..

Fair enough.

3:55 AM
This is disturbing.

Q: Setting Solarized colors on a Vagrant Ubuntu Box

helpermethodI am trying to set the colors of my Ubuntu Box to match the 16 colors palette of the Solarized color theme. I have installed Ubuntu 14.04 Server, no GUI option enabled. When I ssh into this VM and I do a $ echo $ TERM it displays the value xterm. So I was guessing I could use .Xresources to ...

Hi to all, "The best thing todo is to wait until this Thursday (23rd October) and then upgrade to the latest release of OpenStack Charms." Do you know, are these information somewhere public?

@NathanOsman I love that one. It makes me giggle a little sometimes when I get frustrated and want to shoot a keyboard with mind-bullets.
@Seth I doubt it will have zonky in it, because of the "Zonk" fail on let's make a deal. Why would you name a release something close enough to a joke about failing that it's that easy to make?

@fossfreedom are you here?
I want to undelete this

12:46 PM
@Pandya hmm? why?

As this question is merged to this, It is also need to provide more information. because of my this answer deleted, I tried to revise this answer but Braiam not accepting (see revisions). So now I want to undelete my this

ok - let me look
your bit about apt-get is not directly relevant - the command uses dpkg --purge - hence probably why braiam is rolling that edit back

Now can this be undeleted (and moved to that q.)? or I've to post new answer to that question?
@fossfreedom I want to include this as reference/source which suggest command: dpkg -l | grep '^rc' | awk '{print $2}' | xargs dpkg --purge

post a nice new answer and we can all upvote

ok.

1:06 PM
@Pandya +1

@fossfreedom thank-you for co-operation.

Q: Nginx silently dropping header lines that exceed 1128 bytes

Nathan OsmanI have Nginx set up as a reverse proxy to a uWSGI application (a Django app). Due to the nature of the content that the Django app is hosting, sometimes the URLs get long. Really long. Because of this, the Referer HTTP header can also sometimes get long. Here's the problem. Nginx drops the Refer...

7:33 PM
hi
Can anybody know why I need to make as execute .desktop file? Is this related to encrypted home folder? since I have encrypted that.

8:01 PM
@KasiyA IIRC, .desktop files are like scripts. They need the executable bit to be set. Imagine if you get a .desktop off the internet that SAYS it's for a super-fast version of firefox when it reality it goes to rm -rf /
It's just for safety.
My Opinion: Ubuntu 14.10 should now be supported here. It's reached its "Final Freeze", so the version that was out on the 16th is the version that is going to be released tomorrow. Support it! (src)
@Seth How can you bypass the 20-CV restriction of the review boards? Mod power?

8:16 PM
nods

@Seth I now want to have bypass power.

You can go handle the first posts. Those always need a boost.
well now, that is interesting.
yet no one left a useful comment :(

If you're going to leave closed you can't just let it "sit there". Why are you leaving it closed? The OP can't improve what he doesn't know.
Either way, it still needed a boost.

i marked it for re-opening

8:26 PM
yep

it's a valid question
and not a dupe.

exactly
so, if you're going to leave closed people, comment!

seems legit.
Does anyone know about VirtualBox here?

Q: Ubuntu doesn't support Seamless Mode in VirtualBox

WhaaaaaatPartially related to this question. I have Ubuntu 14.04 in a VM running on my Windows host. When I enter seamless mode, nothing happens at all. Nothing Ubuntu is on my screen. How do I properly use Seamless mode with Windows? I am running VirtualBox 4.3.12 as well as the latest Guest Additions.

8:41 PM
ohmygod. so close to 5k. This is driving me mad.
@Seth Are questions about VirtualBox issues running on Ubuntu on-topic here?

@Whaaaaaat You mean VB issues with an Ubuntu host?
Or a Windows host?

My new website is up, BTW.

There is a fine line there somewhere..

@Whaaaaaat seamless is sort of broken with Unity in the guest... With Gnome Flashback (Metacity) it tries to work somewhat better but not remotely close to usable. I can't test with a Windows host, so it may be different there.

@Seth Ubuntu host

8:50 PM
Looks nice @Nathan

@NathanOsman me gusta

@Whaaaaaat most likely, yes.

@Seth specifically this question
@NathanOsman Account made.

Let me know how it works.
I just fixed a bug with the OpenID provider a few minutes ago (that was causing it to not work).

8:52 PM
Should I trust your Dashboard?
esp. Access Private Info ?

Do you trust penguins?

it depends
how is that data stored?

It's stored in Django's default cache in a Docker container.

any encryption?

No, it's not encrypted.

8:54 PM
can you see it?

Though everything in the container is readable only by root.

so you can see it.

@Whaaaaaat If I put in enough effort, yes. But I'm not that kind of penguin :P

i trust you
don't get hacked.
bug: i get redirected to a white page after i approve authorization

Er... that's not good.

8:56 PM
also, you should add a checkbox to prevent pastes from being listed.

What's the URL?
(Of the blank page?)

https://quickmediasolutions.com/stackexchange/authorize/complete/?code=[Auth Key Removed]&state=no_expiry%2cread_inbox%2cprivate_info%2cwrite_access

That's super bizarre.
That means it succeeded but the server ran into a problem storing the access token.
I'll investigate further.

Also, you apparently NEED "Read Inbox"
why even have that checkmark from the UX perspective?

Good point.
I don't really need it actually. I just need at least one of the checkboxes selected.

8:59 PM
at the very least, make it visible, but inactive and checked
wait, only one?

I was in a hurry and ran out of time to implement the "ensure at least one is checked" logic.
So I just made it ensure that one was present.

[ chk ] Allow Access
:D

Well here's the thing: the dashboard is useless without at least one of those permissions. But each section (though there's only one enabled at the moment) uses different permissions.

and no, it does need to be read access
i just tried submitting that form without that one
none / private / write / private+write
all denied
BUGS BUGS BUGS

Right.
I'm on it, I'm on it.

9:01 PM
:D
i like the look though.
also, make your own github

It's also secure.
But it's for internal use only.

so i can't use it for my own stuff?

Not the GitLab instance.

create a public git and fix bugs. then, 10/10 website.
i like it, though.
infact, already bookmarked, linked on desktop, and pinned on FF newtab (4th position)
it's rare when a site gets all of those.
+10000 to you.
and once you release more tools, make the homepage customizable
so logged-in users choose what they see.
and the order.

:)
I'll be adding new features once the technical issues are ironed out.

jrg
9:09 PM
So, I got hit by this today.
Good thing it was only for a staging server.
and I had the elasticsearch user locked down.
Anyhow, anyone want the botnet files that got uploaded to my server?

memememe

jrg
I plan on tearing it apart tonight.

Let me get my virus storage vm ready.
which ubuntu was this?

jrg
it was 14.04

okay.

jrg
9:11 PM
the vuln was in elasticsearch, not ubuntu itself
I'm not entirely convinced that the files are still around though.

can you remove r/w/x , chown owner to 1000 and send them in a .tar.xz with no read perms please?

jrg
I might need to re-join the botnet in order to get the files. then they might do something nasty.

if you need to do that, then don't.
but if they're still around, i'd love to have a sample to have some fun with.

jrg
Ok.
it appears to be a portscan botnet

(i will not re-release as something else, i promise)

jrg
9:18 PM
sure lol
the actual file itself is probably nothing special
the mode of entry was neat

@Whaaaaaat if the issue is resolved by configuring VB then the question is on-topic.
huh, I got a random downvote on a highly upvoted, highly viewed question. That always makes me curious :P
Hi jrg. Been a while since I've seen you around.
This looks like something you might be able to figure our, or at least have pointers towards, @NathanOsman:

Q: QML indicator notification

user215032I am developing a screen capture application, and I need access to the indicator to create notification. I am using Ubuntu SDK. I am targeting the current Unity (not Unity 8). I can't find the API for creating the notifications and accessing the indicator. Code example would help me a lot.

Didn't you rewrite StackApplet in Qt?

I started but ran into two blocking bugs that made it impossible.

oh I see.

10:01 PM
@Whaaaaaat: if you're still around, could you please try the Stack Exchange auth on my website again? I've got logging set up so I'll see the error that the page generates.

10:44 PM
@NathanOsman Just tried. nope
i wanna see it :(

Still doesn't work?

correct

Back to the drawing board.
Thanks for trying.

Is there an ETA for adding in unlisted pastes?
#FirstNonNathanOsmanPaste
@NathanOsman, your Flack generator is broken:

It is?

10:50 PM
(bla bla bla) You can use Wubi. (bla bla bla)
I would NEVER type that.

Oh, so it's working... you just don't like the results :P

you should add permalinks to certain flacks.

Or better yet... convert to paste :)

ADDIT

I've still got to get a couple other important things working.
I fixed the edit profile form.

10:51 PM
ie stackauth

Exactly.

what was wrong with it?

It was broken :)
It wasn't saving the form contents.

called it
i thought there was something wrong...
Am I the first user on that?

On my website?

10:53 PM
yep
(other than you, ofc)

Afraid not. My website goes back to 2009 actually.

even the new site?

But there weren't "accounts" to sign up for until 2012.

huh.

You're (IIRC) the 78th user.

10:53 PM
kewl.

I'll show you the changes over the years...

okay. i can select any checkbox now
inbox access is not necessary.

...and then now.
I want to cry when I look at it back in 2009.
One of the pages on the site (this one) is even worse.
Too many glossy gradients. Waaaay too web 2.0-ish.

don't worry. still better than my CSS skills
It looks like the OSX 10.1 team made it. (no offense)

My first text editor that I wrote:
This is a trip down memory lane for me.

10:57 PM
i actually wanted to download that.
it looked neat.

The Windows version still works.
I highly doubt the Ubuntu version does - too many package breakages in the four years since being published.

i have npp though.
was the new site based on anything?

@Whaaaaaat Bootstrap.

a cms?

Nope. Pure Django.

10:59 PM
it actually reminds me a lot of Joomla.
