I noticed :)
I'm happy to have you as a connection.
Said one fellow penguin to another...

haha, I was like "I know that name... but the face... that is not a penguin"

12:32 AM
Same for you :)

Got your comment @NathanOsman. That command was pretty confusing :)

I spent at least a couple hours yesterday to get that command.
And another twenty minutes or so today to figure out what it does.
I still don't know how to make it stick across reboots.

hehe. The name and arguments weren't terribly helpful.
@NathanOsman The Arch Wiki suggests creating a UDEV rule, if I'm understanding it.
What do you know, there is your very command.

Is there a config file I need to add it to?

they put the udev rule in /etc/udev/rules.d/10-local.rules
this thread suggest various other bluetooth config files but I don't know if any apply to you: linuxquestions.org/questions/debian-26/…

BRB, gonna reboot.

2:46 AM
good luck.

3:00 AM
Now I've managed to break A2DP.

That doesn't sound good.

I'm resetting my Bluetooth config files.
Now nothing works.

Gonna try an upgrade to bluez 5.24.

4:12 AM
Somehow I can't even get my USB mouse to work now.
I'm going to try an older kernel since this just started happening.
I think I've actually hosed my system somehow.
This is... bizarre.
I've got X running by itself.
And that screenshot didn't quite work correctly...
I'm going to have to just install Utopic, methinks.

Do we have a protocol for "bad" downvotes?
(unfair is a better word there)
because this downvote is very unfair.

Q: How can a Bash script tell how it was run?

AesculaI have a Bash script I was trying to make to help me run a rather complex command with small changes that it would ask me about through echo and read. I have found solutions to force it to run a terminal to execute the command, but I'm not interested in that. What I would like it to do is, if I ...

Can I flag a user as low-quality?

not really. We get automated messages occasionally.
I think I know who you are talking about. We know :)

I can't even understand his comments half the time...

@Whaaaaaat Yes, it's called "ignore them" ;)

@Seth It's a loss of my rep

Hey

4:49 PM
@Whaaaaaat 2 rep is nothing, even for you. If all we think about is reputation we lose the goal of the site and start getting paranoid :)
@devs Hi.
\o Rinz

Does this look right? Trying to move tmp dir to /home/tmp wihtout breaking system.
mv -r /tmp/* /home/tmp; rm -r /tmp; ln -s /tmp /home/tmp

@devs Looks 'ok' in the sense that it will work, but you never know what kind of unintended consequences things like this will have.

@devs /home and / on separate drives?
@Seth Ask Ubuntu Recommended Action Template #4: Try it in a VM!

Ugh I have game servers running via java, plus a website but they're all in /home. Really can't afford to break this server. And yes, with OVH and / is full, which only has 20GB. /home has the rest of the 2TB

@devs In theory it should work. In practice, I have no idea.
Why not just change program TEMPDIR?

4:56 PM
I do have a tempdir in /home/tmp..
will changing the actual tmp break things?

You can never tell. Also, there is more than one tempdir...

ugh
What would you do in my situation?
You as someone who uses linux.
And can't afford to break anything

1. Do it in a VM
2. Backups. Lots of backups

okay and which method would you use

both

5:00 PM
I mean moving the tmp dir
@Seth thoughts?

move using mv, then do ln -s while in single user mode.
o/ @Rinzwind

Okay
so this

can you post that as a question please?

what?

@Rinzwind just saying hi.

5:03 PM
mv -r /tmp/* /home/tmp; rm -r /tmp; ln -s /tmp /home/tmp is correct, right? I' would just like to make sure the symlink part is right. /originaltmp to /newtmp

um...
that command is wrong, and can be simplified:
mv /tmp /home/tmp && ln -s /home/tmp /tmp

If I were in your position I would shrink home some and then make sure /tmp is cleaned out regularly.
I know you would have to take the server down though.

You'd have to take down the server regardless...
It is dangerous to play with TmpFS with things running.

A restart is fine
Just not down for hours
there are two zombie processes anyways, Need to probably restart

reboot into recovery mode, run those commands, reboot.
I would personally not even do symlinking.
I would just carve out a part of that 2TB drive and fstab it to /tmp
@Seth Don't tempdirs "stack"?

5:08 PM
"stack"? no idea.

as in, multiple temp dirs/areas combine to form one big one

I don't know.

huh.
i can't find anything on that online.
probably doesn't then

I need to do this the fastest way possible, got a deadline to return in work tonight.
I hate ecommerce

5:29 PM
moving /tmp is probably not a good idea :P

Symlinking it though?

5:52 PM
question
why a move as the 1st part and not a copy?
(the rm in the 2nd part would delete all your mv would move anyways)
for the remainder: that command will work like you want it to

Q: Scale cpu frequency in CLI?

Timi am using cpufreq to scale my cpu frequency. But I do that by clicking cpufreq icon on the panel of Ubuntu 12.04. If without a mouse, how can I show and scale cpu frequency by running commands in terminal? Thanks.

because I'm moving just the contents of the folder because I already have a /home/tmp folder
235 players on my game server right now, ugh i really can't shut the server off. Damnit

yeah well I am paranoid ;=) I always tend to use cp and only do rm's after I know it did what I wanted
@devs hehehehe. you -can- though. if you -should- is the question..

I was thinking since this would be in online line, it would be instant, right?

if not instant it would be close to it
1 thing: do not forget about the sticky bit.

5:58 PM
Oh wait, the symlink actually needs a folder tho, so I shouldn't remove /tmp huh

drwxrwxrwt 5 root root 36864 okt 18 19:52 tmp
that "t" you might need on /home/tmp
@devs no; symlink needs 1 folder and 1 none existing part (that is created by the ln)

ooh, yes, the sticky bit. Won't moving the file preserve the permissions though?

he probably already created /home/tmp

correct

ah

6:01 PM
using it for mysql atm
i hate mysql

I love mysql

I mean I love the server side and maintenance of it

we used to use BASIC and have a client that has a 50m records in a DIRECT file.
takes 10 hours to scan it

chmod 4000 right? (for the sticky bit)

9 seconds in mysql

6:01 PM
That mysqld.socket file is so easy mess up

@Seth ehm 000? aint that umask?

err, yeah, it shouldn't be 000.

So removing the /tmp is needed before the link rgiht?

@devs biggest problem with sql I have is that innodb restore file that is used for backtracking instructions. we had 1 for all databases and it is getting to 75Gb size
@devs yes
(continues: it crashed on one of our servers once and we had to reload a backup....)
so that took 4 hours ...
then we found out you can make that file per database. so we now have several smaller version,.
but it was a bit scary when the live server did not want to start mysql :X

@devGeek thank you for editing post but please please don't add extra char in original poster question or answer if you want to avoid less than 6 char error just type 6 enter key at the end of the post that you edited. Thanks

@KasiyA Whitespace doesn't count for the 6 character minimum.
but unnecessary italics is ugly. KasiyA is correct, italics should not be used for highlighting "key words".

Q: Possible not restore cpu frequency after suspending and waking up?

TimWhen I suspend my Ubuntu 12.04 and wake it up, the cpu frequency I set by clicking indicator-cpufreq on the desktop panel will be restored. I wonder if that is a bug or some design? Is there a way to not restore cpu frequency after suspending and waking up? Thanks.

7:51 PM
@Seth Hi. Yes whitespace doesn't count but Enter key yes it's count but I don't remember how many times but if I edit a post and enter some enter key it accept the edit because enter key more than 2 times doesn't effect on OP ;)

hmm. It's been a long time since I've had a limit error :P

Then solved your error ;)
@Seth I'm trying to replace a word between to char <space> and <:> but for first matched regex I goolged more and more but I can not find any help. I write it for my self with another command but I want implement it using sed command since it can find and replace. can you help me please

8:08 PM
@KasiyA maybe

8:31 PM
Here my command 'echo "this RESULT: Notthis:"| grep -oP '(?<= ).*?(?=:)' | head -1' for example for one line of my file which I want Only RESULT output. it woks fine that found "RESULT" but I want also replace it with new word but I don't know how? I tried also with sed command like this "echo "this RESULT: Notthis:" |sed '0,/ /s/ .*:/ XXX:/'" but it give me this result "this XXX:", as you can see it deleted last part of line since I don't want to delete last part.
I don't know. Thanks in advance for your time

8:41 PM
Also with perl "echo "this RESULT: Notthis:"| perl -pe 's/ .*:/ XXX:/'" command I get this "this XXX:"

@KasiyA Can you explain more precisely what you are trying to do?
I'm not sure I understand.
I got rather lost at 'replace a word between to char <space> and <:> but for first matched regex'
Do you mean replace a word between a space and a colon?

I just typed an incomplete command into the terminal. now I can't type anymore commands. What do I do?

So find a word that is between a space and a colon and change it to something else?
@GiantCowFilms Depends, what did you type?
Ctrl+C generally gets you out of whatever you did.

@Seth I was messing around(On my production server) with cowsay. I typed cowsay -f

hang on, let me install it.
@GiantCowFilms Ctrl+C cancels out of it for me.

8:51 PM
@Seth Ah ha, it worked! Thanks :).

np :)

I just drew Calvin on my production serve terminal! He he he.

9:10 PM
@KasiyA After some experimenting echo "this RESULT: Notthis:" | sed 's/ [^:]*:/ XXX:/' works. Since I don't know your exact needs you may have to tweak it to work exactly, but it works with the example you give.
This is slightly more efficient: echo "this RESULT: Notthis:" | sed 's/[^:] *:/XXX:/'
Working with sed is so much fun.

Anybody here with RAID knowledge?

@LuisAlvarado Sadly, no.

@Seth Hi buddy!!. How was your trip.
anyway was looking for someone with knowledge of mdadm yo tell me if I correctly created a raid 100. If anybody reads this, I did a raid 10 with 4 hdd as md0, then another raid10 with 4 hdd as md1 and then a did a raid0 with md0 and md1 as md10. The last part is the one I want to be sure, for me it sounds logical but it is the first time creating a nested raid up to that level. So I wanted to make sure that using md1 and md0 to create md10 in raid0 was the correct way of making a raid100.

11:47 PM
There's my fave wine user ;)

@hbdgaf sup buddy.
Was actually testing this morning wasteland 2 patch 2 with wine 64. Running perfect with no winetricks and no additional components.

not a lot. i found borderlands2 in my legitimate inbox, so i've been doing a runthrough as a couple different classes. it's long enough to keep me busy.

aaa cool
will look for it in my thepirateba... I mean my inbox too

oh no, i mean my real legitimate inbox

steam?

11:50 PM
yes
@LuisAlvarado that is awesome. i almost hope that wine days for new stuff is numbered and it turns in to dosbox for legacy windows software though.

let's hope that a full massive linux movement actually starts
meanwhile, the gallium has some updates about DirectX9 that might influence wine

well, it will probably happen at the same time that people realize it's more about user experience and fun than "look how awesome my engine/app is" vis-a-vis borderlands vs crysis

between that and the stream that wine is working on, at least the excuse to not moving to linux because of gaming is less

that too is true. idk why oncloud has an android client and not a linux client, but that's a conversation that has been had repeatedly
i can tell you that i've mathematically played bl2 single player/mission based for longer than crysis2 single player/mission based. and i still WANT to play single player unlike crysis.
the visuals are great for WOW, but that wears off.

was also testing genymotion and the android sdk
do NOT know how to make whatsapp work on that emulator
I install the play store, download whatsapp, it tells me "hey buddy, i'll call you maybe"
3 years later... nothing

11:56 PM
heh. i haven't tried. what's failing.

the calling part, it simply does not call
I have my actual phone with me waiting for the call or code

wanted to move everything to ubuntu, already got telegram in there and hangouts, was missing moving the phone to it too lol
HHAHAHHAHHAHAHHAHAHHAH
there is a song called call me maybe lol?

yes

am a bit out of social music things

11:59 PM
the song call me maybe is here: youtube.com/watch?v=fWNaR-rxAic the spoof is seasame street, a kids show.

found that one lol
